In a country which supposedly has a constitutionally mandated separation between church and state, why is a Reverend giving the President-Elect's inaugural invocation?

Here here...but, you were NEVER supposed to ask that question...

    tired and old

the problem is drug users do hurt other people literally not some weird metaphorical hurt...

but literally having not the judgment or clarity to not hurt other people... the ramifications of drug use can be far reaching

two adults who love each other ...who are cognitive and mature hurts NO ONE .

Oh right, so now lets trade one set of demonizing people - people who get high, for gays and lesbians...Proof that Americans - humans in general actually - need to have a scapegoat....Jews, gays, blacks, drug users...Leagliazed prostitution and marijuana use has worked in Amsterdam for decades...These issues are just politcal currency, used by the shrewed to capture/divide and conquer the gullible on either side...Such a racket

I HAVE WATCHED ON TV A TEACHER KISSING A STUDENT ON THE MOUTH ------ REVOLTING !

      EVER HEAR OF AIDS !

EVER HEAR OF GAY BATHS, SEX PARTIES USING DRUGS LIKE VIAGRA ?

YES ! IT CAN BE HARMFULL.

AND NO ! NOT EVERY GAY DOES THIS.

This is the problem with the choice of Rick Warren, Barrack Obama would have never chosen the guy if he said what he said about homesexuals about African Americans. Never! And, although, I really like Obama and still have faith he will be a great President, he did not consider gays and lesbians in his decision to choose Warren, Period! And, I am sick and tired of being a 2nd class citizen in a country where I pay the same taxes as everyone else.

      Hello
Thank you -This is a civil right issue.

  • Posted By: carlt @ 12/20/2008 8:59:50 PM

I don't really see what the problem is. He is inviting someone to pray. It is stupid to say we are praying to God while stating that God is ok with homosexuality. Now if he was looking for an interior designer or a party planner but can you really be a christian pastor and believe homosexuality is ok? Barrack wanted a Christian to open the day with prayer. He could not have chosen a pro-homosexual pastor for that because there is no such thing.

      Hello

      Yes there are many.

  • Posted By: DWillson @ 12/20/2008 10:44:57 PM

Christians beleive in the teachings of christ...that does not mean they believe in King james or any other that reinterpreted...they sift through all interpretations to get to Christ.

so nice try but some of the bible was written...or rewritten just to empower some...and if you don't know that ...yes...you are not very smart or well read.

  • Posted By: jwtrotman @ 12/20/2008 10:33:12 PM

You so-called "gays" need to understand Pastor Warren is not going to "PREACH" FOR OR DURING THE INAUGURATION; he' has ONLY been asked to PRAY. You appear to be upset because he believes in one principle while you believe in another. Pastor Warren DID NOT WRITE THE BIBLE; HE IS A MESSENGER FOR THE BIBLE ! Exactly whom should the President-elect have selected to deliver the invocation prayer, SOMEONE OF YOUR SICK CHOOSING? Why don't you people just go "DO" what you know best and stop attempting to pawn your ways on the rest of the American people? Instead of attempting to "WRITE" THIS GARBAGE, these two individuals need to read Genesis Chapter nineteen, verses 1 through 28.

    • Posted By: curve_ball @ 12/20/2008 10:44:55 PM

Here's your answer. There shouldn't be an invocation. Religion has no place in a government ceremony.

How exactly do you know that the bible is the word of god and that the words in the bible are really Christ's words? What evidence is there? Please don't use the circular logic that the bible says that the bible is the word of God. How do you even know that Christ was a real historical figure? The evidence for Christ actually existing as a real historical figure is very, very slim. Most likely the tales in the bible are recycled myths from even earlier religions or simply legends that grew with time.

and it is not the marraige issue that almost any of the gays are so up in arms

lets all call you pedophiles and compare you and your spouses and loved ones relationship as bestiality and incest...

and deny you access to church... and then tell you all that the person who says that has achieved such a high moral honor that he will be given the national platform to oversee the moral and spiritual officiating of our federal government biggest event...at what will be perhaps the most watched event in the history of the world... and then after maybe that man gets this recognition he can go out and add that creedence to him calling you pedophiles and ino better than bestiality...

    yeah try again

it's not about marriage for many...but it is about bigotry toward all.

  • Posted By: REALITY CHECK @ 12/20/2008 10:43:06 PM

Leah "I am highlighting Warren's denial of our sexual orientation as an authentic and god-given aspect of our humanity" and .
"This worldview is justified by him and others by a narrow, a historical and literal interpretation of a very small number of Biblical passages."
So a minister who believes in God and purports to teach from the Bible is supposed tp ignore what the Bible says and agree with you? Rather self absorbed of you, don't you think?

  • Posted By: mocha33 @ 12/20/2008 10:41:49 PM

Whatever our individual belief let us not disrespect the beliefs of others. That is the very sum and substance of universal controversy. That is the very simple reason why we continue to be at war. It is so simple and yet all of the supposedly intellectual community worldwide cannot come to agreement. What is wrong with respecting different philosophies of economics, religions, and just plain life styles? How can we each dictate how others should live? Those who profess to be true "Believers" interpret their doctine as being the "one". Whatever happened to the philosophy of loving one another. Are those just words? Let us give Barach Obama a chance. Can we be too much worse off? We are, as a nation' in a really sad time right now. All of the Gods are needed to help him right NOW.

All Rick Warren did was state an opinion held by nearly 100% of the population 20 years ago, that marriage should be between a man and a woman. Even still the great majority of Americans believe this.

It seems ironic that Obama's choice of a person holding the majority view would cause such an uproar. Almost certainly, if he picked someone with the other view there would be much less fuss. How strange! The majority view cannot be publically stated! It seems like some sacred cow has been offended here.

    • Posted By: phyllis AZ @ 12/20/2008 10:41:37 PM

      Hello,

The majority believed that selling people was alright
The majority believed that women were property
The majority believe original sin was a women???s fault

It???s hard to make an argument base on majority. This is about civil right and the income president.

  • Posted By: DWillson @ 12/20/2008 10:38:54 PM

these are the same reasoning and hate spewed by some that followed the Bible to the letter that said it was okay to keep people as slaves and that wives must be subserviant to their husbands...

Pastor Warren for those of you who don't realize is using the same exact references that they used in the 50's and 60's against interracial marriage... comparing it to bestiality...and unnatural and yes on the level of pedophilia.

and those were used against Obama and his mother

and no a preacher who preached that Obama would have screamed from the mountain tops if Kennedy or others had picked a preacher as vocal about those beliefs and preaching those beliefs as Rick Warren is doing now

    same nasty game different time

I have nothing against gay people, but marriage is NOT a civil rights issue. I am offended when gays equate their right to marry with slavery or the thousands of people who were lynched or those considered 1/3 a human being or those denied a book to read or those who were sold like cattle or couldn't drink water from the whites only fountain or even today are killed for driving while black. If gays want to go through the level of crap endured by those who have really struggled just to stand on the corner without getting arrested or lynched then they can sound the alarm for civil rights. I think if gays want the law changed so they can marry, I would hope they would not attach themselves to the civil rights movement. To do so shows a level of mis-education and ignorance and it is offensive. Not to be for gay-marriage is not a stand against gay people, but a stand for traditional marriage. Rich Warren is not homophobic. I haven't read anything that gives me the impression he is. He is neither angry or hostile. He has simply stated what his faith dictates.

    • Posted By: Nesta12572 @ 12/20/2008 8:08:00 PM

Marriage is a civil rights issue. It was a civil rights issue for the very people you are describing, and they gained the right to marry, first within their race, and then interracially with the Loving V. Virginia Supreme Court decision. That is the same decision that states that the right to marry is a civil right. Furthermore homosexuals have been through many of the same atrocities you listed here. They have been denied jobs and places to live simply for being homosexual, they have been beaten and killed also simply for being homosexual. When Hitler was rounding up Jewish people he was also rounding up homosexuals to be exterminated as well. Perhaps you should examine the issue a little more in depth before you make the kind of sweeping claims you have made here.

Truly a Christian? Then you must agree that the Holy Bible is the true Word of GOD, inspired by the Holy Spirit, and infallible. No compromising. If you do not agree with this initial statement then you are something other than a Christian. That being said:
ROMANS 1:27 ESV and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men commiting shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.
I CORINTHIANS 6: 9,10 ESV Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of GOD? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor theives, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of GOD.

It is plainly spelled out folks, no hidden messages or twisting to it. Those that practice homosexuality DO NOT have Christ Jesus within them, but serve something else. Those that forsake this lifestyle, chosen of their own accord, repent and serve the Lord will be saved. Therefore, we need spiritual leaders in high places of goverment to uphold true Christianity and not settle for some weak form of flase religion that insults/degrades it. .

I am a gay male and I heartily applaud President-elect Obama's invitation to Reverend Warren, despite Warren's opposition to gay marriage. The way I see it, there are always two roads to effecting positive change that is long - in this case, GLBT people achieving full recognition as people deserving the same rights as everyone else.

One approach is extremist and polarizing - the "with us or against us" view favored by Ms. Renna. Such an approach accepts no compromises and anything short of capitulation by the opposition does not represent victory. Hers is a perfectly legitimate viewpoint - but it simply does NOT work. Rather, it results in everyone refusing to talk to anyone who doesn't share their strong conviction. A classic example is the pro-life/pro-choice issue, where positions are now so thoroughly encased in concrete that any kind of universal agreement is almost impossible.

The other approach takes the view that all progress is incremental (and usually, very slow), but that progress IS inevitable, so long as the quarreling parties recognize their opposition's viewpoints. This approach DOES work. Tt is this gradualist approach that Obama chooses to follow - EXACTLY as he promised, during his campaign.

I wish progress wasn't so damn slow, but I'm convinced that Obama's approach - one that seeks to build on points of agreement, rather than areas of disagreement - is the ONLY approach that will ever move us forward. It will take awhile, but we WILL get there.

    • Posted By: bkrummel @ 12/20/2008 5:20:07 PM

I just love your comment and completely agree with you. It's refreshing to hear a gay person advocate an incremental progress to change. I support gay marriage, but this "with us or against us" mentality of some is very troubling and makes it difficult to support gay marriage. Also believe this mentality was partially responsible of Prop 8 and other gay marriage laws. Gay rights activist should be thrilled like all Americans that we are about to have the first black president and that he plans to unity and improve our country. They should appreciate Obama's decision to invite Rick Warren to his inauguration, if just in the spirit of Obama uniting the country.

Thank you for posting this; you made my day. Please continue to work towards gay marriage but in an incremental manner that respect those that disagree with you. This is the way to go and will eventually result in gay marriage being legal.

To the idiot gays on here that say Obama should have the bigot Warren give a national prayer and we gays fighting for our freedoms should just be patient and keep to the back of the bus, let me quote an old protest song sung so valiantly by Judy Collins "it isn't nice, it isn't nice, you told us once you told us twice well thank you buddy for your advice but if that's freedom's price WE DON'T MIND! THIS IS WHAT EVERY SOLDIER MAN AND WOMAN HAS DIED FOR SINCE WE FIRST BECAME A NATION. NO WE WILL NOT GO TO THE BACK OF THE BUS YOU BASTARDS!

Living a gay lifestyle is sin or wrong or whatever you want to call it. Yea i know most of them say they were born that way and i believe them. but i also believe there were people born with a natural desire to steal or lie and does that make it right? NO!! But we do live in this great country of freedom so if they decide to live that way so be it but all i ask is that they would shut up and start focusing on things that are more important than themselves

    • Posted By: seabiscuit @ 12/20/2008 6:28:09 PM

The Constitution protects us from bigoted morons like you. What you believe is not the law and the Supreme Court will uphold the law and protect our rights to adopt from bigoted morons like you.

Where does homesexuality begin and pederasty end? What is the rate of increase in acts of pederasty? Why is syphliss higher now than any time in the USA as reported by the CDC? Who should pay for sexual diseases? Everyone? Why doesn't media report gerbill stuffings at the hospitals? Is a coke bottle, banana, or a flashlight a love object? If you lick a fece can you fall in love? Why won't queers support the law of $100,000 for divorce?

O.K. we've heard love the sinner, hate the sin. I'm a sinner, but I ask forgiveness and try to be rightoues. As a sinner relate to the verse that says FLEE FROM EVIL. Queers are evil. Not my rule, but His. I have a hard lovin fags, murderers, etc. The reason you see so much outrage over homos and not other sinners is THEY HAVE A POLITICAL AGENDA! Aren't we lucky the murderers aren't gathering together in numbers to change our government to accept their lifestyle. The homo groups want to tear down our country and church till it is all run by queers. Is there another group of sinners that so openly wears their sin on their sleeves without repentance? It's one thing to be queer, but when you throw it in my face I will react. If you do not like that reaction be ashamed of your sin and ask forgiveness like the rest of us. It is a worse sin to tolerate, accept, or condone homosexuality than to be the homosexual. How can you be a practicing homo and be a believer and be proud of your sin? Sickos. It is the politcal agenda and the whining that makes you homos hated.

Why is that gay and lesbians are never satisfied? They constantly bicker over something just to bring attention to themselves. The media should stop giving voice to them. They seem to think they are the only slighted people to have ever lived. Get over it and live your life the way you want to just leave the rest of us out of it. We are tired of hearing all the complaints. If being gay was right in God's eyes you would not be so unhappy with your lives!!!

    • Posted By: Fedupwithlies @ 12/20/2008 10:31:14 PM

Excuse me? Ok, in the first place you self righteous prick, the argument over Rick Warren is based on his support for Proposition 8 - yet another chikdish tantrum by self righteous biggots claiming that 'marriage' is being taken from them?...like some possesion only they are entitled to...Well, guess what? Marriage, i'ts a right, not a possesion!

  • Posted By: curve_ball @ 12/20/2008 10:27:09 PM

Indian Rider, you say "God does exist." But how do you really know that? This is a crucial point. This certainty in God's existence becomes certainty that the bible is his perfect word which becomes certainty that the government should legislate the bible which becomes the genesis of a fundamentally religious state intolerant of anyone who doesn't "believe in" the state religion. Is this what we want? Do we want to be Iran?

No one can be certain that god exists, just as no one can be completely certain that he doesn't exist. One can believe in his existence. But belief should not be the basis for legislation and policy. Rationality and evidence should be the foundations of law.

As you can tell my reading all these comments, this is a angry topic. The problem is, if someone makes a comment that is against homosexuality, it is an outrage and people who are homosexual blow up in anger. Yet when homosexuals make statements and those against it make a comment they are blasted for saying it. When has it become not okay for anyone to state their own opinion? Those who are true believers in God and the christian faith do not agree with homosesxuality because it against what they believe. That is it. They are simply stating their opinion and their stance. If you are a homosexual, you can't be a true believer, that's a fact.

  • Posted By: byfaith @ 12/20/2008 9:55:39 PM

I have never commented in this fashion on any subject, even though I've been very passionate about many. My comment is because I believe that our President Elect Barack Obama is being viewed harshly on the subject of selecting Pastor Rick Warren to give the Invocation or say the prayer during the Inauguration Ceremony. I think that this dialogue is a great idea, thanks Newsweek. I applaud Chris Crain for the consistency of "common ground" and knowing which fight to pick. As children when a fight or disagreement would "break out" our parents would always say, don't fight, you should get along, find common ground. It's a miserable person who always finds something negative. My mom would say, look for the positive. Don't be so controversial, when it's not applicable and "not the fight." She would always say, "give the other person the benefit of doubt." President Elect Barack Obama echos this statement that has become in many ways ...his signature, "we can disagree without being disagreeable."

I believe that as human beings we should receive our God given rights....inalienable ....life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. And yes, all people are humans. If you happen to be in the minority as I am, a 55 year old African American woman , you know the definition of this statement in the absence of those rights. You know the great joy of having access to those rights, as well. There are varying views, even among those with the same sexual preference and religious foundation on the subject of marriage for gay people. I stand with your analogy Chris, even with the fact that I am not gay, and don't believe in same sex marriage. I should also say that I don't believe in divorce either, unfortunately it happens, is legal, even though it hurts so many people.

I support our President Elect Barack Obama in his efforts to bridge the divide. We are not going to agree with all of his decisions, but I believe that they will be well thought out, and moved upon as a beacon of hope for this great nation. In order to move forward, we must work together for all people. Change we can believe in.....
