Obama's choice of Rick Warren is highly suspect as a political chess move to appeal to the 50% of Americans who did not vote for him (conservatives and conservative leaning independents). In my opninion it is nothing more than a very sly attempt to grease the skids for Obama's agenda over the next four years until when he hopes to have garnered enough support to win the presidency again and have a majority in Congress and the House to actually put forth the radical ideas he really wants to enact now but doesn't have the support (lame duck presidency). I have mixed feelings about the choice but ultimately I'm glad that he chose Rick Warren rather than an obvious choice for him such as an LGBT priest or pastor who shares his views. Even though I have mixed feelings and am tend to be unhappy more that Rick accepted the invitation God is reminding me of his sovereignty and that despite what men choose he is still in control of their lives and my life, even Kings or in this case, Presidents. Proverbs 21:1 says, "The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD; he directs it like a watercourse wherever he pleases." Our responsibility is to pray for Obama despite my resistant heart to do so... that the Lord would open Obama's heart to His will and also pray for the LGBT in our nation to repent and turn to God just as much as the rest of us who struggle with many sins including heterosexual sins among them.

AS EVERYONE WHO READS THE BIBLE KNOWS STRAIGHTS ARE A STENCH IN THE NOSTROLS OF GOD AND WILL BURN IN HELL

You must not have heard the term "straight marriage" which is truly one of the most asinine oxymorons that exists.

Our nation has sunk lower than low. The morals of the people are incredibly far gone now.
The Bible (a Catholic book, really) is interpreted by every person without any authority whatsoever, each trying to have it fit "the God of my own making".
If there is a God, there is A truth; not many truths.
"Go your way and sin no more" applies to homosexual activity as well as hetero. Marriage is and always will be between a man and a woman. Saying otherwise will never make it different. If you truly love the person you are with, then you will live chastely---NO sexual activity if you're homosexual or unwed heteros. You will offer you singlehood to be used, in your very short life time on this earth, for the good of all.
Love is sacrificial. It's time to do some serious sacrificing of self.
By the way, Rick Warren's form of Christianity is really not correct either. His is a kind of "choose your own way" also.
It won't make a difference who does the invocation in the long run. As long as we slaughter our unborn, have fathers ignoring the children they helped conceive, believe that lying is o.k., think that we, as Americans, are somehow better than others, etc. etc. etc. we are not going to have God's blessings actually fall on our nation. No sense in kidding ourselves!

You know, the premier place to learn toleration and diversity is in the family. And that starts with marriage; two different genders learn to love, understand and tolerate each other. That is the way it was meant to be.

It seems this discussion is showing that, all to often, those who support non-diverse marriages are also very intolerant of others.

Just face it. It doesn't matter who Obama or anyone else picks, there is going to be some group of people that will complain about the selection and whine for weeks on end. If people expected Obama to do all things promised when he was trying to win the office they are delusional and should take a pill and get over it!!!!

    Dear dic593,
You must not have heard the term "gay marriage" which is truly one of the most asinine oxymorons that exists.

  • Posted By: jfmccann @ 12/20/2008 5:54:27 PM

Who would the gays approve of? Elton John maybe with Rosie by his side.

  • Posted By: saltreses @ 12/20/2008 5:53:37 PM

Why not have someone like Bishop Gene Robinson, an out gay cleric, jointly give the convocation since the President Elect is purportedly appealing to ALL Americans? Otherwise it sends a clear message that the Obama administration is excluding not including a significant segment of his supporters. Or in Molly Ivins words: You dance with the folks who brung you to the dance.

Padota, I believe that what you just said is the most asinine statement I have ever heard.

  • Posted By: saltreses @ 12/20/2008 5:49:03 PM

Why not have someone like Bishop Gene Robinson give the convocation jointly if we are going to be inclusive?

I didn't vote for Obama, but he's going to be my President and I support him. Now, that support will have to be earned based on how he handles the economy etc, but I'll give him the support for now anyways. I support gay marriage and am deeply concerned about the influence of religious fundamentalist, but if Obama wants Rick Warren for his inaugural invocation, it's his choice and I'll trust it. It seems to be in the spirit of working with people of different view points ad being everyone's President, which is great. Besides, there are more important things to worry about than this. On another note, gay rights activist need to learn to respect and work with people that disagree with them and to pick their battles. This complaint is just petty.

As a straight person I believe Rick Warren has shown that he does not believe all americans should have equal rights.Ibelieve the constitution says differently. There is no place in red, blue, gay, straight,or any america for someone to think they should have rights that others don't.It's a no brainer if you throw the judeo-christian religious beliefs out.Unfortunately they are catered to to get elected. In the words of Spike Lee"DO THE RIGHT THING".

Seriously... Get over it... The majority of folks from real life know that gay and lesbian marriage is not appropriate. The Gay population were mislead by the "Saviour"Obama... as were many others. You do have a choice.... as does everyone else. Your choice is NO more difficult than any others...

I am anti abortion. Yet, if the President Elect had asked a pro abortion priest to give the invocation, I would applaud him. It is time we accept that there are divergent views in our society and Mr. Obama will be President of the United States of America; not just of the gays and lesbians. nor of any other one group or persuasion for that matter.

HOW MANY TIMES DO TELEVISION PREACHERS SAY ONE THING AND DO OTHER THINGS ( SIN ).

DON'T KNOW RICK WARREN , IF OBAMA WANTS HIM ---------- SO WHAT !

THERE WERE JEWS AND GAYS IN CONCENTRATION CAMPS, MANY OTHER TOO.

    WAS THIS RIGHT ?

    I THINK NOT !

Obama has shown that he is not tied to any single constiuency and that he is the President of all Americans. He has shown he will listen and try to unite and we have common ground to work with as we solve our problems. He has shown that his choices will not always be popular with those who want to control his agenda. There is not a red America or a blue America, a gay America and a straight America - there is a United States of America. We all have a place at the table.

Let's see what he can do in office before we condemn him. At least he is willing to be inclusive in his choices - and not everyone will like it - but let's be civil about the discourse.

Warren is an evangelical. Evangelicals have NO MORALS. For them, the end justifies the means. They have an ideology based on bigotry and exclusion.Trusting them is foolish, including them is self destructive.

If the government decided that Jews could only have a civil union with a Christian, would that still be an argument about a title?
    It's about civil rights.
Rick Warren is a bigot. There's no excuse for what Obama has done.

I'm a social conservative in the sense that for my personal belief, I do not approve of gay marriage. That being said, I wish to express my opposition to laws like proposition 8. You see, I know that my beliefs are religiously based and I don't expect the state to enforce my views on the rest of society. I don't need the civil authorities to validate my beliefs through the laws. I do not feel threatened in my faith if others don't agree with me and make different life choices. I feel that I answer to God and to myself. I don't expect to try and usurp God's position by trying to get others to answer to me or to any other man made authority. That doesn't mean I don't have strong beliefs on the subject. However, I feel equally as strong about how I need to treat other people.
I believe that I should treat all people with dignity and respect including those that hold views different from my own. I have co-workers, friends and family members who are gay. We agree to disagree, the operative word is that we agree... We don't seek to exclude each other over these issues. In this country we need to stop attempting to exclude each other on the basis of differences in beliefs. We will not heal the bipartisanship nature of this country if we attempt to basically perform the reverse of the hypocritical denigration and exclusion as practiced by the "moral majority" (probably not so much a majority as very vocal). We have to learn to live together despite our differences. Excluding Mr. Warren would just send the message that we are going to continue the politics of hate and division. It's OK if we don't agree, let's grow up and learn that lesson instead of just practicing the same old divisive politics on another group.
