They need to learn and practice tolerance, just like they DEMAND of us 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
They need to learn and practice tolerance, just like they DEMAND of us 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
Absolutely spot on with your comments. It is amazing how intolerant the gay movement really is...
I don't think you would be "tolerant" either if YOUR rights were put up to a vote by the majority now would you.
Gay people already have the right to get married. As long as it is to someone of the opposite sex. Therefore, gays have the same rights as straights. So quit whining already...
That is a completely iditoic comment. Civil Marriage is a right and saying that they have the same right IF they only marry someone of the opposite sex is garbage. It is the view of a fool.
You are the fool. And where is it written that marriage is a "right". Sounds like another liberal fairy (no pun intended) tale to me.
Hey, I think I'll marry my parakeet. Using your twisted logic, it should be fine in the eyes of the law.
The Loving case defined marriage as a right. In case you do not know what tht is it is the US Supremee Court case that said that laws against interracial marriage were a violation of the Equal Protection clause. In fact the court in its decision said
"Marriage is one of the "basic civil rights of man," ".
As for marrying your parakeet, that comment jsut shows how completely idioticv and brinaless you are. That analogy is only used by complete idiots. An animal (like a child) cannot enter into a legal contract, and a civil marrige is a legal contract. But since you are so obviously a birdbrain maybe that is the only thing that would have you. Also, maybe that is the only thing that could feel you inside it (since parakeets are very small and male parakeets have very small endowments).
Equal protection under law is means tested, not form tested, per Brown v The Board of Education.
Heteros have the right to marry the consenting adult of their choice.
Gays do not.
Has anyone ever thought that even if someone IS born that way, does that still make it ok? As Rick Warren said on Dateline, I have a desire to sleep with every beautiful woman I see, but does that make it right? People forget that the bible talks at length about how we are born into a "sinful" situation...divorce, murder, adultery, pornography, Greed, anger, selfishness just to name a few...and....homosexuality are all products of a fallen world. It doesn't make the homosexual any worse or better of a person than anyone else struggling with their sins.
"Has anyone ever thought that even if someone IS born that way, does that still make it ok?"
Of course it makes it OK. It is a part of nature, nothing to try to change as it harms NO ONE. It only causes one to be harmed by others. That is their problem and thier bigotry.
Sin is a religious concept and has no place in Governmental affairs.
The controversy over Rick Warren's appearance at the inauguration is the perfect admonition to those who would not separate church and state. If we want to truly have an inclusive ceremony, we can not include religious beliefs as a part of the ritual. All religions have believers and non-believers with the nons in some sort of inferior position. How could anyone who holds this sort of belief system be asked to represent the people of the US who believe that all men are created equal?
I believe Pastor Warren to be a decent and caring human, who is compassionate and kind, though steadfast in the beliefs in which he was raised. Pres. Obama has every right to ask him to offer the invocation. His supporters who decry him for uniting differing beliefs from their own are no different than the narrow-minded autocrats they themselves despise.
The US is a multicultural society filled with many wonderful people with widely different values and beliefs. As soon as one segment of his supporters feel like they aren't getting 100% of what they want, they betray him. It's useless and petty. He is THE most intelligent, thoughtful, analytical President in the last 100 years (at least), facing the greatest challenges since the Great Depression AND WWII combined, and certain people are criticizing him for his choice of religious leader to offer a short prayer at the beginning of his Inauguration? Ridiculous.
Although not necessarily with mine, Pastor Warren's beliefs DO align with a large percentage of the population in this country. I am a married hetero supporter of gay rights, but we have MUCH greater problems to deal with at this point of time. If you're gay who cares if you CAN get married if you won't be able to afford to, or if you're starving?! We have more important issues facing us right now. One of the drawbacks of belonging to a minority is dealing with the thoughts and actions of the majority. That's just the way of the world.
Wow, you sound a bit like Laura Bush when she declared about the people washed away..either their lives or their homes...as "that is the lot of the poor". Or Barbara Bush when she said the victims of the hurricane were probably enjoying their deportation to unknown places. These things are important no matter what the economic situation is.
"One of the drawbacks of belonging to a minority is dealing with the thoughts and actions of the majority. That's just the way of the world."
So, you don't actually care about equal protection under law, because "that's just the way of the world".
With apologists like you, who needs enemies?
Other than showing Warren for the bigot he truly is, I hope Obama knows what he was doing when he picked him.
People, this is disgusting. On the one side we have the Christians, used loosely, and on the other we have the ???open minded??? liberals. Both are bigoted. I was really disgusted with the outcome on prop 8. How can you place restrictions on who a person can marry? Oh, did I mention I am a Christian that will become a pastor? Christians often cite the bible to throw the gay community under the bus. This by itself is the opposite of a Christian beliefs. These people who do this are so concentrated on the law that they forget to realize the freedom in Christ. The law does not save us for it is impossible to follow the law, see the Old Testament. If we are condemned by the law, it looks like I am first in line to hell. There is no tally in heaven keeping track of sins. We are all saved by the blood shed by Jesus. I am not saying being gay is a sin, I don???t care if it is or isn???t. This matter is not up to us. If we quit concentrating on the law then we become free to love all. Jesus did not die for us to ostracize a people. He called us not to be tolerant but ACCEPTANT. If we worry too much about our brother???s and sister???s sins then we forget about His amazing grace. And liberals, just because people do not agree with you, doesn???t make them bigoted. Calling a person bigoted for disagreeing with you is in itself a bigoted statement. For being so ???open minded??? you all close off a lot of people. I often hear hate the sin love the sinner. I find this stupid. If we concentrate on the sin then that will take away from the love we can give. I say love the person for we are all sinners, no one is a worse sinner than another but all can be freed from that by the love of Christ. For Obama to pick this pastor to speak shows great courage. There is so much that differs in them both but they are willing to look past that. Why then, cant we follow their example and stop this us vs. them mentality and realize that it is just U.S.
love
Renna's point that Obama's choice elevates a bigot to the level of spiritual authority in the eyes of the country, and in fact the world, is the core issue here. When political ideology based on religious beliefs is used to create oppression of a minority group, to denigrate the humanity of others because they are different, and to rob them of dignity and equality in the eyes of the law, the proponents of that ideology do not belong on the national stage with the new President of the United States listening solemnly in the background.
I do not want this man's blessing. The type of thinking that he represents, that it is acceptable to single out law-abiding citizens for persecution because of who they are at the core of their being, is antithetical to the ideals expressed in the Constitution that Obama is swearing to uphold.
It is a serious error in judgment - and a huge disappointment.
Beautifully put.
Here's a question: Warren says he has no problem with civil unions for gays, but gay marriage leads to incestuous marriage. If that's true, why don't gay civil unions lead to incestuous civil unions? Just wondering.
Once again 'liberals' prove they are not up to the label. They are only open minded if you agree with them. If Obama had chosen a gay pastor, they would have hailed it as a embracing, expansive step forward--even though he/she would have represented only a miniscule number of people in the U.S. Warren represents a vast majority of views. The Totalitarian Left is on the move!
" The Totalitarian Left is on the move!"
Demanding liberty is "totalitarian"?
Oh, yes.
And war is peace, hate is love, and Oceana has always been at war with Iraq.
I wouldn't want someone up there who thinks all marriages performed at Saddleback Church should be nullified either.
Not all opinions are equal. The one who points out hatred and bigotry is not the bigot.
Wow, Horrible Bastard, I think your posts are, if nothing less, entertaining. I think you fail to realize that Christ compelled those who had the Holy Spirit to indeed speak for Him. Now that might mean that there are those who misquote biblical text or get their feelings involved (which is wrong) but just like giving the guy who asks for money on the street corner a 5 dollar bill you have to leave it up to a greater power because you dont know if he is spending it on booze or food. You glorify God by living a good life, speak to people about your inspiration and why you feel so strongly about it, refuse to condemn their activities and pray for them at the end of the day. Other than that, you can complain your way through life and condemn even the most innocent if you'd like but where the hell is that going to get you? Maybe shouting at kids as they cross your front lawn when your earning social security.
"Wow, Horrible Bastard, I think your posts are, if nothing less, entertaining."
Well, that's why my wife calls me "Horrible Bastard".
"You glorify God by living a good life, speak to people about your inspiration and why you feel so strongly about it, refuse to condemn their activities and pray for them at the end of the day."
Where in there are we required to crap all over people and call it love, and deny them civil liberties while insisting that our societies are free?
I agree with Chris. As a "straight", I do not agree with Rick Warren's views on LGBT people (by the way, I hate such a label) - however, the only way to influence people we disagree with is to include them. We may never change their views, but by including all different viewpoints in the discussion - and I mean "DISCUSSION', we can have a rationale discussion. If we demonize a person or a group (however large or small), we invite an equal or greater reaction - and that is something that I am not "tolerant" about. We have for too long demonized those with whom we disagree on an issue - even if we agree on other issues. That is destructive and certainly is not God's way. Rick Warren has wonderful views on ending hunger and poverty and on a host of other issues. He can be (and will be) a force for great good in the coming 4 (and hopefully 8) years of the Obama Presidency. Engage him in the debate on this an other issues, disagree without being disagreeable, recognize that there are few if any people who agree 100% of the time and that "disagreement" is a healthy thing, when done with respect. No human being is perfect or all-knowing or correct all of the time. If we open our hearts and minds to those with whom we disagree, while we may not forge agreement we can still forge friendship or at least mutual respect.
"If we demonize a person or a group (however large or small), we invite an equal or greater reaction - and that is something that I am not "tolerant" about."
Exactly! That is the exact argument against Rick Warren.
Basically, what I am saying is we are all in this same boat together...and we need to love each other as God loves us first according to the scriptures.
Problem is, some people have to sit in the back of the boat, know what I mean?
Actually, Rick Warren does say that Jews are going to hell. And only gay people in committed loving relationships were denied membership in his church. (Child molesters, as he compared gay people to, were not similarly excluded.) Let's not pretend Rick Warren is a nice guy, just because he wears Hawaiian shirts.
It's not about gay marriage, it's about an overall anti-gay focus. Perhaps, in the interest of inclusivity, we should invite David Duke to give the invocation.
I am a gay man with a partner of 10 years. I attend an evangelical congregation which includes many who think being gay is NOT the issue. It is the way we were born. I can disagree, live with my sweetheart and go on with life. I have studied books of Rick Warren and love them. We need not get down to telling others WHAT and HOW they should believe. Each of us has to stand before our God; therefore we need to make sure that we are right with GOD.
By the way, we are thinking about getting married in a state that allows it. You can have it both ways and not have to fight about it. As a side note, the pastor in my church found out that we were gay and did NOT have a problem with us being gay. However, we do disagree on how to live out our personal lives. I would say that is probably how it is with many people of faith in some areas of their faith.
I did not vote for President-elect Obama, but I am very impressed with what he has done and said so far, including this issue.
Does your pastor equate your personal relationship with pedophilia and incest?
Because Rick Warren does.
Just like the woman who, though beaten by her husband, insists he is a good provider who goes to work everyday and pays the bills, Rick Warren would have you believe that because he espouses eliminating poverty and working for AIDS victims, his intolerance and demonization of gays is acceptable.
It isn't.
Just like the case of the wife beater who pays the bills on time, the exclusionist and divisive message of Rick Warren isn't enough to cancel out his homophobia.
Obama's attempt at inclusiveness and bridge building falls flat with Rick Warren as his choice of invocater-in-chief.
If we don't get what we want we are going to cry and throw a temper tantrum. Live your lives, nobody is bothering you! Get over it! Just because many (the majority of the country) don't think it its "OK" to be gay, you call them bigots and homophobics. Give me a break! Perhaps you lend some credibility to the word "Sissy".
"Just because many (the majority of the country) don't think it its "OK" to be gay, you call them bigots and homophobics. "
There was a time that the majority of this country did not think that interracial marriage was OK. Ther was a time that the majority of this country felt that segregation was OK. They were bigots and racists both times. Like it not, when people try to deny equal rights to a group because of what that group is (and based solely on personal views or religous beliefs, not on any generally societally valid reason) then they are bieng bigotted. I am not sure about them homophobic, but bigotted, yes.
"Get over it! Just because many (the majority of the country) don't think it its "OK" to be gay, you call them bigots and homophobics."
Sounds accurate to me.
"Just because many (the majority of the country) don't think it its "OK" to be gay, you call them bigots and homophobics."
Yes.
Bigot.
The Westboro Baptist "God Hates Fags" folks are far less dangerous than the smiling, smug, oily, patronizing bigots like Rick Warren. The whole country hoped Warren represented a new type of post-wingnut Evangelical. Now that his ignorance has been exposed to the light of day we know different, so it's a good thing the spotlight has been turned on him.
Wouldn't it be nice if the 2012 Invocation were given by the Dalai Lama or someone who represents positive spirituality instead of know-nothingism and fund-raising prowess?
"The Westboro Baptist "God Hates Fags" folks are far less dangerous than the smiling, smug, oily, patronizing bigots like Rick Warren. "
Really? I can't tell the difference. As a matter of fact, some of the posters here would be very comfortable in Fred Phelps' church.
Church and State are separate. Everyone should be under the title of Civil Unions as far as the Government is concerned. If you want to call your Civil Union a Marriage based on you r religious belief then that is your right. I was born gay and cannot change who I am. I will not be in the closet anymore because people do not understand nor have the right to judge me.
Gays are not willing to be second class citizens and religious people do not get to define my rights as an American Citizen based on their beliefs.
I wish this issue would just go away, both the gays and evangelicals are disfuctional, for different reasons of course but disfuctional none the less.
The sad part of course is they both want to impose their disfuctional agenda on society at large.
"I wish this issue would just go away"
So do the Gays. Unfortunately, the fundies aren't having it.
That is NOT correct. The church is trying to inject ITS beliefs into law. Gays are seeking EQUAL ACCESS AND TREATMENT under the law that is guaranteed under the Constitution. Unless you are saying that equality ONLY applies to heterosexuals.
To Seabiscuit (because I can't reply to your comment for some reason) --
You're taking Old Testament Law out of context and using it to defend your beliefs, and that's why NO ONE is answering you. I understand that Christians often do the same thing -- pull scripture out of context and use it to defend some point of doctrine they believe -- but either way, it points to a failure to understand the WHOLE of scripture. What you are doing is much like reading only pieces of a novel, plus what others have SAID about the novel, and then trying to make a case about the novel itself -- having never read it yourself. I can tell that you have never read the entirety of Scripture, based upon your misuse of the Levitical Laws to try to make a case against the Bible.
I know that your anger will keep you from listening to any explanation I would give of what the Old Testament Laws reveal about God, man, and Christ, so I hope that a gay Christian who has studied the Scriptures fully and completely, the WHOLE of Scripture, will come alongside you and point out where your logic is flawed.
I say this in humility and love, although I'm pretty certain it won't be received that way.
How am I taking it out of context? I most certainly am not. How can you lie to yourself? You're not capabile of love or humility, you're just a pius liar and a hypocrite who would denie hard working, tax paying, moral contributors and productive members of society from having the same rights you have and would use God as your weapon to discriminate. I forgive you, you know not what you're doing, you're neither capablie of love or humility and it's sad. I am not taking any words out of context in the bible, how sick of you to believe your own lies.
You do take the Bible out of context and twist Scripture just like all of the pro-gay Episcopal churches do in the U.S.
If you don't like what the Bible says about the gay lifestyle, you can always take your defiance to a place w/o God.
Love the sinner but hate the sin; if you don't like that messege, too bad. Frankly, I don';t like your attitude or hate!
"Frankly, I don';t like your attitude or hate!"
Who cares what a bigoted fundie likes?
rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand you can go f yourself. You finally do get it. I don't care what you believe is sin or any of your beliefs. I don't have to. I live my own life and you have no say in it. I will marry the person I want to and we will call it marriage and you can just get over it. We have and will always have our marriages and they will be blessede by God as believe and know to be true. If you're so sure that I'm wrong, guess what? I don't care. So go f yourself!
I see...you have all the answers just like many gay people who try to defend their deviant lifestyle. If I were you , I would watch your tone and have a little more respect for God and his servants whether you like them or not. Sin is sin, homosexual behavior is a sin, and your misinterpretation of Scripture will not change that fact. Get over it...
Why are you worried about gays, then? They don't endanger your soul (you do a fine job of that on your own).
Live a pious life, by all means, but stop trying to cram your religion down everyone elses' throats.
YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYou're not me - nowget over it. My life, my marriage is my own. Mind your own business!
Please... Citing the Bible is the last refuge of the indefensible and the first recourse of the idiot. If you're going to base your opinion of gays on the Old Testament, you may as well make an effort at practicing what you preach (that'd be the bit about studying the whole of the scripture) and reserving judgment on an issue you have no understanding of. No one who seriously claims to hold a monopoly on the truth can call themselves a Christian. That, incidentally, would be the proper usage of the word humility.
......................"although I'm pretty certain it won't be received that way."
yeah you are right, no matter how well and polite you try to be, as you can see, the reply is not very well recieved.
Jesus threw the money lendors from the temple because they were such vile hypocrites and that is exactly what you people are, phony haters with your thin transparent veneer for pretitious "politeness" that doesn't fool anyone. Stop prentending your hiding behind your politeness, the emperor's clothes are non-existent - you're transparent and butt-nekkid honey. Just because you believe your own lies, doesn't mean anyone else is going to - really, really now - really!
If your so worried about homosexuality ask yourself this: why are you not equally worried about those who touch the skin of a pig? In the same place where it says men shall not sleep together for it is an abomination in the eyes of God it says the same thing about touching the skin of a pig. Shouldn't you pray for Football playing athletes just as fervently as you do against homosexuality?!!!! How 'bout straight men who love to watch two women getting it on? At yet you're on here, hating on gays....mmm....what does that really say about you? Why are you not just as biblically offended by straight man's homosexuality for 2 women? Is it because it's accepted as part of the heterofacist paradigm? Yeah, we're really hateful about 2 men loving each other, such a threat to you women who really should be just as concerned about other parts of the bible that are just as damning of other acts. You know in Dueteronomy a woman who grabs her husband's rival by his genitiles is subject by biblical law to have her hand cut off at the wrist for it is an abomination in the eyes of God, so don't be grabbin stuff don't belong to yeah. Don't believe me? read your bible - all these people on here quoting the bible and have never even turned a page, I can bet on it. You people are disgusting bigots. Just deplorable haters and discriminators and we're sick of your dictating to everyone else what you don't even follow yourself - so go masterbate and shut the hell up and leave us alone Rick Warren you liar! Don't you see that your bigotry is your disease, the worse disease of all is your hypocrisy toward your daughters and sons? You should be more repentant of your own condemnation and judgemental attitude towards us that stems from ingrained bigotry in a homophobic society that refuses to understand that your sexual thing is not my thing and vice versa. I'm just as repulsed by hetero sex but I have had to watch it on tv and in the media and hear about it all my life. I think it's disgusting but I've learned to get over it. I'm just grateful God made me gay and not one of you sickening hyprocrites.

I sure hope you straight haters on here are having sex for sex and not procreation, none of you have any business raising (gay and straight) innocent loving children made in the image of God. You're all just worthless bigots like Obama and Rick Warren.
Dear mltucker: the legalization of gay marriage is not requiriing Bible-believers to "endorse" the gay lifestyle: just letting them get legally married so they can file taxes married and jointly and getting spousal group health benefits, like those who have gottten a divorce but weren't victims of sexual iimmorality or desertion but got remarried anyway, or married such a divorced person, contrary to Christ's teaching (and factoring in an interpretation of Paul's "no longer bound" desertion teaching) as in the discovered copies of Matthew.
Please...no more enlightened Hippie interpretation of Scripture that basically states that Christ taught that anything goes as long as you don't hurt anybody. Missing books of Bible also don't count because they went missing for a resaon. Liberals often forget that Christ came ot fulfill the Old Testament (Torah), not replace it. God is more than mere love. The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is not an idol like a statue and He does demand boundaries!
"Please...no more enlightened Hippie interpretation of Scripture that basically states that Christ taught that anything goes as long as you don't hurt anybody."
Now Maimijer claims to have the sole correct interpretation of the bible.
Wow.
miamijer--don't know who you're referring to, because my comment immediately above yours didn't state "that Christ taught anything goes as long as you don't hurt anybody." You're right about the fact that Jesus fulfilled the Old Testament. But you're wrong about it still being in effect. Because He fulifilled it is why it's no longer in effect. Thus, no more stoning of false prophets, disobient children, adulterers, males who engage in homosexual sex, animal sacrifices, or 7th day of the week restrictions on food prep and work. The Old Covenant is obsolete.
Plus, if conservative Christians want to be consistent with getting the states to ban gays from having sex and getting married, not only should they also ask the state to ban the remarriages mentioned above, but they should also ask the state to ban Christians from marrying non-Christians. Bob Jones University might have wanted a ban on interracial marriage too.
