I applaud Obama???s choice of Warren. It was a brilliant political move to include a large number of people that he had alienated with his pro-gay stance. And there are a lot more of them than there are gay people, so politically, it makes all the sense in the world.

To say that Warren does not reflect the mainstream views on gay marriage is a bold faced lie. Just look at the passage of proposition 8! That was passed in the most liberal of states. As if that were not sufficient to convince you, 30 other states also placed bans on gay marriage. So what planet are you living on to suggest that Warren???s views are not that of mainstream America in regards gay rights?

Obama is simply reacting strategically to the mass of Evangelical Internet postings claiming that he will "persecute" Christians, that he is the Antichrist foretold in prophesy, etc. Rick Warren is a celebrity religion huckster and being anti-gay is part of the program for those types. Lyndon Johnson had to make "deals" with white supremecists in order to advance civil rights for blacks, and this does not mean that Obama has gone homophobic.

Well, you know, they had their panties in a twist anyway, so it was probably a bad idea to hurt their feelings at this time. There's hope yet, maybe Obama will invite a Korean Gay Jew to give the benediction at the inauguration. That would balance the whole issue while also adding some diversity.

GAY? I thought it was homosexual. I have never seen a gay (as in happy), homosexual. Just confused self absorbed annoyers. Who cares what .05% of the people say. They are a miniscule minority and they should get over themselves.

    • Posted By: ghostmasseur @ 12/21/2008 10:30:10 AM

Actually they are closer to 10% of the population. And thier views are jist as valid as yours are. The differnce is that they are not ryig to deny you a baisc civl right, those who would deny them civil marrigeas are doing just that.

    • Posted By: equalcitizen @ 12/20/2008 11:21:53 AM

You really shoudl get out more. You could also look next door, at your work, at the mall, or even in your church. We're everywhere and no more or less happy than heterosexuals: the opposite of "gay," which woudl mean by your definition would be just plain "sad."

Crain says Warren "was not 'equating' gay marriage with incest and polygamy. Crain is wrong and knows it. Waldman was equating gay marriage with incest and polygamy (and pedophilia); he was asked point blank about it. Crain has to know this, because he quoted Warren's video interview with Steven Waldman himself, stopping just short of the point where Warren did what Crain says he didn't. Here's what Warren said immediately after (as Crain quoted) that he opposed "the redefinition of a 5,000-year definition of marriage."

Warren said " I???m opposed to an older guy marrying a child and calling that a marriage. I???m opposed to one guy having multiple wives and calling that marriage." Steven Waldman then asked: "Do you think, though, that they are equivalent to having gays getting married?" Waldman's answer: "Oh I do."

Warren may or may not, as Crain writes, "see gay relationships very differently than polygamy and incest." I don't know. I do know he considers gay marriage equivalent to polygamy, incest, or pedophilia.

Surely Obama can find another evangelical and supporter of Proposition 8 to invite to give the inaugural benediction--one who hasn't equated gay marriage with violent crimes.

Hello, the people of California spoke on Prop 8. It is an abuse of our election process to try to repeal it. It seems like too many minorities are willing to do anything to get their way. Like other instances where they will keep recounting the "votes" until they get their way. I am sad for our rights as Americans. It is ok to oppose gay marriage. Get over it!

      • Posted By: ghostmasseur @ 12/21/2008 10:24:51 AM

But the people of California do not have the right to violate the Equal Protection Clause of the US Constitution which is exactly what Prop 8 does.

        Hello,

Your right, but this is not about being against gay marriage, it's about Obama asking a pastor the believe gay marriage is the same sex with children and incest. A memeber of my party

Acceptance of gay marriage is not much different then the insistance by the evangleicals we accept the concept of creation rather than evolution, both are far fetched ideas not supported by science, or even common sense.
Niether idea will ever have more than the 20% popular support they currently enjoy, beyond that small percentage both are debunked by more intelligent thinkers.

    • Posted By: ghostmasseur @ 12/21/2008 10:22:43 AM

"Acceptance of gay marriage is not much different then the insistance by the evangleicals we accept the concept of creation rather than evolution, both are far fetched ideas not supported by science, or even common sense."\

That is a completely flawed anaolgy. Science has no place in the definition of marraige. And it is very much common sense (as well as Constitutional) to allow same-sex civil marraiges.

Rick Warren is only given an invocation which is a religious blessing. The last time i checked there is a fundamental right to an individual'sreligious beliefs. Why must everyone Obama associates with pass a lithmus test with the gay and lesbian groups? Are you kidding me? There are millions of americans who are opposed to gay marriage. Does that mean they have to be excluded from any dialogue because the gay groups rant and rave? I used to support gay issues but not any more. You guys need to get a life.

      • Posted By: padota @ 12/20/2008 5:44:03 PM

Where is the discrimination? Any citizen has the right to marry. All LGBT people have the right to marry. Even felons, drug addicts, alcoholics, and pedophiles have the right to marry. The issue is that marriage is the union of one man and one woman. So have at it gay man, find your woman and get married. Likewise lesbian woman, find your man and marry. No one will stop you. .

        • Posted By: ghostmasseur @ 12/21/2008 10:20:50 AM

"The issue is that marriage is the union of one man and one woman. "

Actuyally the issue is that CIVIL marriage is whatever the courts decide it is. Religious groups and individual citizens have no say in what a civil marriage is, otherwise there would still be no interracial marraiges.

        Hello,

This is not a gay issue - about civil rights and the respect. If you were told every aspect of your life is wrong, would you fight or would you agress with the majority and be quiet?

      • Posted By: freedomrocks @ 12/20/2008 6:43:20 PM

Great points! I can't believe that so many people have this much time on their hands to complain about so many trivial things. How long with this invocation even last in comparison to the riduculous out cry of it? Guess what, the sun will still come up the day after the invocation. Get over the bitterness people! I am offended that a out of control minority is trying to repeal the desire of the majority of people of California to repeal Prop 8. What a bunch of babies that did not get their own way. It dirties our whole election process. Seriously people!

Obama made a mistake politically. Yes, gays and lesbians have the right to be outraged. Warren equates same-sex marriage with statutory rape, incest, and polygamy (which, by the way, are usually all heterosexual institutions). The commentator who calls Obama the most progressive, pro-choice, pro-gay president in history is just as deceived as others who felt he was some wildly leftist individual. The only reason why gays and lesbians lack the right to be upset is that they should not have fallen for Obama's silky words. He opposes same-sex marriage himself, and has never taken any bold positions. The media is still asleep on this joke. So check out blogs for more cutting edge analysis.

My problem is not whether Rick Warren is anti-gay and lesbian and anti-women's rights, . . . my problem is that there are thousands of non-celebrity ministers, priests, rabbis, "religious" who could have given the invocation at the inauguration without offending or insulting anyone. If President Elect Obama was attempting to make a statement that showed his tolerance of those with whom he disagrees, then why not have Reverend Wright give the invocation?

    @wonderboy1069
Sorry wonderless, you are simply stupid. A pedophile involves a child that doesn't know better (one could take advantage of them) that is always wrong as they are innocent. You, on the other hand *should know better*, thats not innocent, thats plain ignorance and bigotry. Or what we call 'stupid'. You have no excuse for compromising two consenting adults and commitment to each other. If you feel that your own marriage is threatened, you need to look at your own problems which are completely that: your own problems. Keep your business and pursuit of life liberty and happiness out of my house and I'll be sure to do the same for you.

  • Posted By: wonderboy1069 @ 12/21/2008 4:22:08 AM

My point is this: Those who champion the gay-marriage movement would like for their compatriots to believe that a line will be drawn once they're successful. Could American adults possibly be that naive? This train has no brakes, man! Next we'll be wondering why we imprison, say, pedophiles, many of whom plead, as do homosexuals, that they're simply "born to do it". In this context, who are we to deny freedom to the poor soul who not only has no control over the urge to molest babies, but claims that such behavior is a BIRTHRIGHT? Do you see where this is going? EVERYONE will want in on da act! No brakes, no line..get the picture?

It is nor reasoable to say "I am a Christian" and then say "but the Bible is wrong about this, this, this, etc., even though I stake the fate of my eternal soul on it." Either such faith is justified by the correctness of the entire Bible or it is not, and if it is not, then the fate or the soul is in doubt. Therefore, the 'pickers and choosers' have undermined themselves and others to their detriment. Someone brought up slavery, again. the Bible does not say that slavery is good, but acknowledged its existence and advised Christians how to best live under a society that included slavery. In stark contrast, the Bible does not give guidelines about how to be a homosexual, but says that it is (among other activities) a sin. Not the omly one, or the unforgivable one, but one of them. Believe or disbelieve the bible as you will. It is God who will call you to an accounting, not any man. But do not be a lukewarm fence-sitter and try to have it both ways.
The left is fond of the phrase, "the tyranny of the majority," as if the principles of democracy were to be discarded whenever some group became offended. What they are unwilling to admit, however, is that the alternative is "the tyranny of the *minority*." In South Africa, they called that apartheid. If there is any worth to a democratic form of government, it is that the will of the majority prevails. It is the left which is consistently found in the courts trying to overthrow the expressed will of the majority, not those on the right. Isn't that interesting?

    • Posted By: JohnInAustin @ 12/21/2008 3:55:48 AM

Actually, I don't recall Jesus saying anything about the literal truth of the Bible. I am a Christian, but I believe the Bible is the work of holy men (and probably women) inspired by God. It reflects human understanding of devine truth, not devine truth itself, which is infinitely beyond our grasp.

"For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts." (Isaiah 55:8-9)

Rick Warren is a pompous, overstuffed twit that spews hate with a smile and is a consummate con artist whose church is a congregation composed of people who have given up their right to deciide for themselves. In return they are told their way of thinking is the the right way. They have become a Stepford congregation. If Obama wanted to show change, he should have invited a well known gay minister to do the honors. But what matters is the long run and I still believe the gay community will be pleased.

Regarding comments made by timahlen, I would say that if conservative evangelicals were significant, you would have elected McCain/Palin and you do exclude people on the basis of their sexual orientation from being full participants in America--remember Prop 8? If that is not exclusion, what is?

    • Posted By: TaterSalad @ 12/20/2008 11:44:02 AM

Alot of Americans elected Obama for things other than his stance on gay marriage. But that same majority also voted prop 8. It's not that evangelicals believed that they had to vote Republican because they were conservative, many were just open minded enough to realize that for the time being Obama was a better choice than McCain.

      • Posted By: saki14 @ 12/20/2008 12:47:49 PM

As a member of Saddleback church pastor Rick has never put down Gay or Lesbians ever. Hetrosexual or gay his goal is to spread his faith to others. Further his wife Kay Warren has made it a point much to the dismay of many evangelicals to have AIDS as one of the primary ministries of the church, with her husband they have made it a point to minister to those in need of care, raise funds to find cures and to educate for prevention and that has been totally inclusive of the gay community. Let me repeat that the AIDS ministry has been completely inclusive of the gay community. So to paint Pastor Rick as a hate monger is not even close to the truth. I invite you to actually speak from an educated point of view and attend the church. You will find that no one is put down, you will find a church that calls on its membership to be involved in ministries that help the poor, the addicted and the broken, to go to missions across the world to educate, feed and build communities. You will find that the preconceived notions of hate are just unwarranted. You would find that there are ministries that cater to the gay community as part of the church and would rethink your position. As much as its nice to play victim Christians may not agree with the lifestyle but that is a far cry from hating anyone.

        • Posted By: Fedupwithlies @ 12/21/2008 1:01:43 AM

This is nonsense...The Aids work Warrens wife does is geared towards Aids in Africa, and thank God for it too, that they can address the issue w/out having to talk about the fagoots in the United States...Where were they in the 80's when gay men were dying at the rate of one every 8 minutes? Did they have a meeting w/Ronald Reagan or Bush senior about what was beginning to unfold? NO, they were griping about their taxes....and lets not forget the tax break they got under W, while he re-imposed a debt burden on the citizens of this country that is at least in part responsible for the current economic meltdown...Talk about immoral

          • Posted By: saki14 @ 12/21/2008 3:36:05 AM

Oh and one last thought. If you want to personally attend and American ministry where care is being given by the Saddleback, pastor Rick's church in Orange County and personally cater to the gay community. I will join you.

          • Posted By: saki14 @ 12/21/2008 3:33:36 AM

You are incorrect. Its here in the United States as well and is inclusive of Gays here in America. If that is your definition of hate then continue to delude yourself. But as someone who works in theatre where my field is dominated by 90% gays I am sensitive to their agenda and Saddleback does not as I can attest because I attend weekly does not "HATE" gays. You are respectfully uninformed. So much so that if you were to make a bet and attend weekly I would place a substantial wager against you that if you heard one negative comment about gays I would pay up. If Pastor Rick was such a FACIST it would not be a bet I'd make. Your comment about taxes, uh what does that have to do with anything. Try to stay focused on the point.

Tell you what..after we've granted the homosexual community license to redefine marriage, why not move forward and grant the same to polygamists? Since we Americans should no longer limit the joys of marital bliss to a man and a woman, then why not expand the number of participants? Think about it..the possibilities are ENDLESS! Then, and only then, can we as a society REALLY progress to the pinnacle of inclusion: Holy Matrimony afforded to those poor, misunderstood practitioners of BESTIALITY! After all, what possible harm could it cause? We have a consenting adult and his/her loyal and loving "partner", be it a nice-and-fuzzy Collie or a rough-and-tumble Rottweiler..yeah! I mean, so long as the dumb animal in question suffers no pain and is otherwise treated well, what moral laws would be broken, now that we as a nation have taken it upon ourselves to redefine morality to suit our every desire? Surely the progressive-minded GLBT's of our great land wouldn't want to be seen as Exclusionaries, so they, like the rest of the citizenry, would gladly embrace this incredible breakthrough in cultural mores. America moving FAST-forward..what a country! I can see it now..POLYBESTIALITY! Our grandchildren will look back on our breathtaking social achievements with pride and gratitude, so COUNT ME IN!!!

Lets finish this off,as NEWSWEAK had a problem.

''Ye have made a commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.. Ye hypocrites. Well did Elias say of you that you draw near to me with your lips, but your heart is far from me, for in vain do you worship me,teaching for doctrines , the commandments of men''

    Matthew 15 :7-9.

Is gay marriage a commandment of God or Man?

If Gods,as He has readily assured in Warrens Bible, what damned business do you have to judge him by the standard that you also now judge others? That you declaim that they not judge YOU by? Or that you violate Jesus'own admonition not to judge, and verily:

''To shake the dust off thy sandals, and Go Thy Way''.

    Who made a gay God?

''Where were you, when I made the world''?

    Job.38:1 :39

The Ist Amendment to the Constitution of the United States

''Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of a religion ,or prohibiting the free exercise thereof''

Homosexuals [ as well as NEWSWEAK] would do well to keep the above secular stricture in mind,if not the religious Christian Bible].

PS:Where does Jesus mention anyone other than a ''wife''in the entire NT? Where [Matthew ] does He state to ''judge that which is right''. Is Warren performing this task in his position? Is Obama, for this matter?

  • Posted By: gsalamone @ 12/21/2008 3:05:10 AM

I am outraged by the selection of Rick Warren to deliver the invocation at the inauguration! Of course the firestorm over this choice is warranted! A man who equates committed loving same-sex couples to incest and pedophilia is an abomination in his own right. I for one will not be supporting watching the inauguration as long as that man is participating. The Gay and Lesbian community should push for a boycott of the event as a statement to Obama that we will not take this lying down.

Since this is a discussion over our communities response to the selection of Rick Warren, it is 100% appropriate that two gay writers debate this issue. This is about the selection of a homophobic religious fanatic to deliver the invocation at an event that is suppose to unite the country in the historic election of the first African American President. The fact that Obama would choose such a divisive figure on this day is ridiculous! Furthermore, the transition teams response to our anger was a complete joke!

  • Posted By: imagination7 @ 12/21/2008 12:15:32 AM

I got nothing bad to say about gay or lesbian, i don't agree with their lifestyle, but I respect and treat them like a good human being, because whether they know or not that what they do is wrong or not, that is for God to judge, the Bible states plenty about it being a sin, and if a person chooses to live in sin that is their choice and they will answer to God, and explain all they like to Him, again it'a choice.
A lot of people make choices in their lives bad and good. Now if they want the marraige defenition to change they can do it, it can be a law on paper on stone, in court or wherever else that they would like it to be changed, but to me in heart i know what marriage means to me, and if i will have children, i will teach them the same way my parents taught me, that marriage is something more then just a partnership to produce children, but the only perfect balance that God created for human beings to live in harmony, and to compliment each other, exists the best between a man and a woman.
Now if a law would be created that marriage defenition will be changed, If I will respect the gay and lesbian wishes, then my wishes as a Christian should be respected to.
What I mean by that is if two men or women want to get married, then they should build their own "churches" somewhere where they will not have Christians telling them what is wrong and what is right, they should hire and appoint their own priests, write their own Bible, the kind that suits them, and not expect to go to a Christian church who will bless them, because a real God fearing abiding pastor will never agree to get that kind of couple married, that is a fact.
I don't care what you do, but in the end when it comes to a judgment day, you will remember a lot of "i told you so's" except the arguments that you use to excuse your behavior of why you became gay or lesbian or "i was born with it" is not gonna fly with God. Plain and simple.

    • Posted By: nonatonne @ 12/21/2008 2:57:30 AM

That sounds rather fair and respectful. And in fact, gays and lesbians have already created their own churches, called the Metropolitan Community Churches. They conduct gay weddings, but their freedom of religion regarding marriage is not respected (outside Massachusetts, Connecticut, Canada, etc.), and so those weddings are not considered "legal."

I would disagree with you on everything else (why on earth would anyone "choose" to be gay? just to be disagreeable? 'cause discrimination is fun?), but that's the nature of a pluralistic community--there will always be disagreement, but we have to be able to live together respectfully. It's worth remembering that *no*--*zero*--gay marriage groups have asked for churches to be forced to perform gay marriages. The Constitution guarantees that churches make their own rules, and that cannot be changed. Gays just want the ability to marry in churches that allow it, and in civil ceremonies.

Why is still okay in this nation to treat gays and lesbians like the "other." Warren equates us with pedophiles and those who commit incest....is that ok to Obama?

Tell that to the boy who performed oral sex on a black boy in front of 200 teenage kids and then committed suicide. Talk to young boys who have been sodomized on a scouting trip. Male queers average 500 partners by the time they are 30. That is a lot of anal hair, it is not?

        Huh?

  • Posted By: SD_Dave @ 12/21/2008 2:03:39 AM

In a country where we have a clear separation of church and state, it's amazing that religious views are still being injected into our policy decision-making process. The issue of same-sex marriage is NOT a religious issue. If religious groups insist on holding onto the word "marriage" then the state (local and federal) should be changing ITS terminology completely and ONLY recognizing Civil Unions for ALL. If a church wants to "bless" that union and call it a marriage so be it. The church hangs onto the word "marriage", NO church is forced to "bless" any union (also under the establishment clause). ALL marriages (recognized by the state) would be converted to LEGAL CIVIL UNIONS, and if the church performed the ceremony, the church can recognize it as a marriage or choose not to. It's that simpl.

Civil Unions, grant equal protection and access to ALL citizens, no special treatment - EQUAL treatment. I personally don't want a church recognized union, but I also don't want to go through what I went through 20 years ago when my first partner passed away (after being hit head-on by a drunk driver). We had ALL of our legal paperwork in order, living wills, durable and medical powers of attorney, we owned a home together, and his parents successfully sued to get EVERYTHING overturned through the federal court system. Why? Because we weren't LEGALLY MARRIED! Nobody should EVER have to go through what I did back then.

My partner now, and I have been together for 18 years (and legally married for 5 months) and we have 3 children. I have yet to have ANYONE take me up on my offer to have them explain to my children why THEIR family has less meaning and value than our neighbors because we cannot face them to tell them that people don't think that they are as worthy as their friends' family.
