Obama did not win the presidency because of his charisma rather he won because of his intelligence and his understanding of the problems we face as a nation and Obama spoke to the American people about those problems and how we can solve them as one people. Since his victory at the polls, Obama has demonstrated that he has a good grasp of the issues we face and what to do to address them. We know a good president by the team he assembles for his cabinet. Obama's cabinet consist of the creme de la creme of America's managerial talents both in foreign and domestic affairs. If we give this good man the chance he will deliver.

How can Barack Obama be one of the most powerful people? HE ISN'T EVEN PRESIDENT YET!!! He is a nothing - he only got elected out of spite because of Bush - that's all. When will the President's office be held with high esteem and regard instead of voting in celebrity hype?!

That is a lot of faith to put in one man. He is not the only one who will have to fix all these problems. I fear most that the American people who elected him think now that he is President everything will suddenly be ok and they can vicariously sit on their couches watching their expensive or inexpensive televisions saying they made the difference. I seems to me that most people feel he is just going to walk into their homes through the front door and declare all the their problems gone. Instead of taking some personal responsibility of their own because in the end we all have the power to change are own lives even if the it is the hardest thing we have ever done. Or not. Just my two sense.

I'm not surprised that Newsweek chose to name Obama as the most powerful, even though he hasn't taken office, yet. This just continues the long chain of evidence of Newsweek's bias as a "news" organization. It would have been more appropriate for him to be selected in December 2009, after he's had a chance to demonstrate his effective use of power. Shame on Newsweek. But thanks for reminding me of why I don't buy your magazine.

We're sure you're much more comfortable with Rush and Billo.

Besides, with the current prez always vacant and now virtually checked out, Obama probably already is the most powerful man in the world.

Yep, newsweak, rush, hannity, air america, all unbiased sources.

Remind us why you even read and post here if you don't like Newsweek..

What a bunch of garbage - Sanchez made me puke, Eric Anderson is a racist/bigot, PIA1981 - you're the bitter sounding one.
Steve KJR - Thanks for he only intelligent comment on the board.

I'm not bitter buddy, read my posts, I'm happy and having fun. My candidate won....obviously maiden's candidate lost. While most here are supporting Pres.elect Obama, some of you are spoilsports because you can't stand the fact that he won by a landslide. Bitterness and envy, so very unbecoming.

      • Posted By: dd1136 @ 12/30/2008 4:07:24 PM

        PIA1981
I didn't vote for Obama, that's true, but I do respect the posiiton that he will soon hold. However, respect is earned not given willy-nilly. Let's just see how he does, say in the first 100 days, and then perhaps we can give him the top spot or at least, acknowledge that he's heading that way. IF he deserves it, that is. Time will tell..

        • Posted By: Pia1981 @ 12/30/2008 4:19:37 PM

dd1136-thank you for your honest comments. I respect your opinion regarding Obama. My comments to maiden were warranted. She referred to the new Pres.elect as Ol'Barack. Does this mean he has to earn her respect before he is properly referred to by his name of Barack instead of Old Barack?

      • Posted By: Pia1981 @ 12/30/2008 4:00:58 PM

PS You owe Sanchez an apology.

How can he currently be the most powerful person in the world? He is just a freshman senator. Maybe in a couple of weeks he will be the most powerful but not right now. President Bush is far and away the most powerful person in the world.

    • Posted By: 40YearR @ 12/30/2008 2:22:44 PM

In about as pathetic a way as possible...

Dam! dude, I think Bush has been a disaster but you might want to keep the hatin' in check. Bad for you blood pressure.

I want to wish Repubssuck, Pia, Doc, Harley, whatisreal?, HB, olderwiser, and all the others here the best and most meaningful Happy New Year! ! ! Who knows, we all may learn to regret it, but I have something to look forward to in the new year, and would like to say it. Some will probably agree and others may ridicule, but that is what goes on here, and I do that too. Having the political background I do, starting as a definite McC voter, I am surprised to see myself saying this, and a lot of other things I have said. It is with best wishes to all, and for our country that I say this.

Soooo, I just cannot believe it! We soon will have a new President! I have never been so impressed with anyone. Not ever. Wow! He is brilliant. He is wise. There must be something intrinsic, but he has developed that too. No mind in the political realm has ever really impressed me. His mind really, really impresses me. I have seen some in other fields who have held me in awe. but no one has ever done that for me in the political field. I am truly in awe of him. It is great to feel that way about a President, and I am thankful for that in these times.

For me, it is like he was created for the presidency. He seems so much more fit for this job than I could ever imagine, or even hope, could ever occur. He has gravitas. Majorly. Like I have never seen. Demeanor. Focus. Never confused. Steady. Slings and arrows. Clintons. The inevitable. A power structure. They could not be defeated. I agreed. The RNC propaganda machine. Unlike anything before. Actually frightening. He transcended it all. And this man is our President. I am glad. Can't get enough. I want to follow him. I would bear arms with him against any odds. I believe he will use that power for good.

Everyone has warts, but he is fundamentally honest, I believe. He has integrity. Intellectually. And in principle. I believe he will do his very conscientious best. All the time. One could only ask that much fairly. Then there are those talents, skills and gifts.

I must say again that he is the most postracial person I have encountered. I am happy for him. I aspire to that state. I am grateful that such a one is our President.

Finally, is my pride in my country. We did it! Despite all the hate and racism, we, enough of us, set aside color and voted for the candidate. I was full of patriotism following 9/11, but I proudly say that never in my adult life have I ever been so proud of my country.

Happy New Year to all, and may we all pull together to have things turn out alright! ! !

    • Posted By: pbpace @ 12/29/2008 4:06:08 PM

I do agree with you about O. The guy truly is the Messiah. Next to me, I can't think of any other sentient carbo-based organism that is more brilliant. He is the ne plus ultra of educated, intelligent homo sapiens the world over. He is the giver of all that is good and the taker of all that is evil. He is - to paraphrase the Stalinist propaganda reels - the greatest genius of all times and all peoples. Amen.

      • Posted By: 40YearR @ 12/29/2008 4:20:12 PM

My Happy New Year greeting extends you as well. You might have noticed that I am not interested in arguing today. Do too much of that anyway, especially yesterday. So, as flawed as all of us are, I am hopeful that this presidency will work out well for all if us, including you.

        • Posted By: pbpace @ 12/29/2008 4:36:11 PM

Thanks for FINALLY wishing yours truly a HNY. Anyway, who's arguing? ...I simply seconded your motion. Geez some people are so sensitive on here. Can't we all just get along?

          • Posted By: 40YearR @ 12/29/2008 4:48:39 PM

That is precisely what I was trying to do. I find myself being unclear often...

That's ok. Happy NY to you too. I often bedazzle my opponents with my bs skills....I can understand how you'd be a little disoriented right now. Take an aspirin and a stiff drink and you should be ok.

              • Posted By: Pia1981 @ 12/29/2008 5:39:01 PM

Bedazzle? Such humility! And, you need to stop it with the offensive comments. Posting about stiff drinks to 40 is not nice!

Cool..but you calling me a drunk is ok? Dear, 40YearR and I have made peace. We've buried the hatchet. I think he has a little more intestinal fortitude than to let some troll offend him...might you want to emulate him? It would do wonders for your mental outlook.

No, me calling you a drunk is not okay. I apologize. I did that to punish you for your comments regarding my vocabulary in my comments to Repssuck. You didn't apologize to me about that but I forgive you.

                      Ok, Pia here goes.
I apoligize for: 1) calling Obama the Messiah 2) calling Pres. William Jefferson Clinton "Slick Willy" 4) making fun of your comments to R 5) Telling 40YearR to take an aspirin and a stiff drink AND ANYTHING ELSE, BOTH REAL and IMAGINED I might have written to disturb your mental equilibrium. Adios.

It's interesting when he is compared to the Messiah: I guess he may always fall short in that instance. But Obama should be compared to past presidents.

From the most recent presidents (the last 20 years)... We've had a sex scandal, bank scandals, recessions, wars, low approval ratings. It's time for an honest president.

Capitalism is a culture not a thing. You can't save what you are, you utilize what you have to the best of your ability. Like everything else, capitalism has faults and those who will take advantage of those faults regardless of the outcome or who gets hurt. Just because the pendulum swings to the left, does not make it broken. Right now the capitalist machine is doing what is suppose to - win and lose.

What if my goal is NOT to have people like me? Being a suck up is boring.

Then you would want to be alone and obnoxious all by yourself instead of burdening the rest of us with your presence. Let me guess-you are a bully, therefore a Taurus.

How our new President shows his committment to helping and maintaining Israel as an alli will be a major indication of how I will support and get behind him. HIs affiliation and committments to the Muselim world scares me to death when it comes to the Israel/Palestine issue. He on the other hand can be another great leader in getting our country up and running by focusing on the repair and rebuilding of our infrastructure and the millions of new jobs it will creat. This was done before by Rosevelt and proved to be a turning point in the economy of that time period.

    • Posted By: pbpace @ 12/30/2008 4:08:54 PM

Israel needs to sink or swim on its own. Hopefully the new Administration will not be a mouthpiece for Tel Aviv. I would not count on it, however. AIPAC has long, sinister tentacles throughout the body politic.

pbpace, Are you seriously relating Clinton's above board actions with Nato in Serbia and the U.N.' mandate in Somalia , to Bush/Cheney's faking evidence to invade Iraq. Do you also stand with the Iranis who described the "aspirin factory"? You've pretty wll shown your true colors now. Just another mouth-breather who gets his/her marching orders from Hannity, Limbaugh and Morris. You fit well in that company. Shouldn't you be blogging on Fox? Con't forget to throw in a few Messiahs, nobamas and husseins in.

Here's a suggestion for a reply. Oh, repubssuck, you are such a bad speller.

    • Posted By: Shanshayla @ 12/29/2008 6:48:01 PM

Do you have any evidence for your "faked evidence" claim?

      • Posted By: 40YearR @ 12/30/2008 9:16:40 AM

That the 'yellow cake evidence' was a fake has been established. Who faked it has not. Who gained from that? We all knew and know Saddam's history. The continuing misimpression that Saddam/Iraq participated in 9/11 is a product of the propaganda. The biggest theme in the Big Lie was that there was an imminent threat, 'mushroom cloud'. Possibly seeking yellow cake from (soto voce) Africa... There was no imminent threat. There was time, and we had an important job to finish. That others agreed is no more significant than that Jim Jones was able to get believers; the depth of believers' beliefs about Iraq was demonstrated in their participation in the evasion, and lack of it. England just proved itself a loyal ally. There was no imminent threat.

The actual threat was neglected. I did not accept or need to believe the propaganda to be in favor of the invasion. I do not have a need to be an apologist for it. Others resent it.

Good point. The truly sad thing is the Dems gave Bush carte blanche. As I've said before, ad nauseum, the chief hawk who voted for this tragedy is now our incoming Sec'y of State. Why? Little Miss whistle britches wanted to pander to her Jewish constituents. I thought this election was about change? Change we can believe in... right? Now we have the same neocon cabal running the show. That's what always mystifies me about you Obamaphiles. He promised you starry-eyed cloud dwellers a new utopia and we're getting the same dystopian clusterf**k. Go figure.

          • Posted By: 40YearR @ 12/30/2008 10:01:18 AM

Seems like he's hired a lot of the people who were shouted down when they told Bush what he should have listened to. This Sec State will implement policy as directed. She will have to.

            • Posted By: pbpace @ 12/30/2008 10:27:13 AM

We'll see. My feeling is SHE"LL be running the show because this guy has little foreign policy experience. In fact the whole cabinet is a bunch of Clintonistas. Change we can believe in ...right? Which begs the question, why didn't the Obamaholics just vote for her in the Primaries to begin with?
Once again, the REASON the dems voted for the war is they were pandering to public opinion. Bush and his propoganda machine was in high gear and hoi polloi was baying for blood. I think these clowns in Congress knew full well there was something fishy....profiles in cowardice!?!

              • Posted By: 40YearR @ 12/30/2008 11:01:47 AM

Obama handled Hillary through the convention and after. I would have preferred someone else, but Obama is wiser than I. We will have to see, but I think the Clintons have finally capitulated and fear further offending former supporters, and want to preserve as much of their 'legacy', as they perceive it, as they can. We will see. I just don't think Obama can be pushed around. We will have to see.

Hillary also provides cover against folks who want to continue to distort what Obama meant about diplomacy.

Obama should have experienced people around him, and what an uproar there would be if he did not... For now, I am still of the view that he will be the opposite of Bush. He will decide, but AFTER actually listening to, more importantly understanding, all the insightful views he can get.

I expect most in Congress voted mostly out of patriotism, and I still think that more of them saw the real reasons to invade Iraq as I did. Perhaps I am giving them too much credit in this.

                • Posted By: pbpace @ 12/30/2008 11:35:55 AM

"perhaps I'm giving them too much credit..." That would be an understatement to say the least. Look, this notion that a bunch of well-meaning, pious Congressmen were mislead by Bush is baloney. This was a systemic break down in the democratic process of checks and balances. Congress passed on it's war authorization powers...IMO. I have Pat Buchanan to thank for giving me the antedote Bush's jingoist Kool-aid.

          Hi 40,

Agreed. Most know the evidence was fake. My point here was challenging Suck regarding his statement that evidence was faked by Bush and Cheney. Though he very much wishes it so, he of course has no credible link proving that.

What's known is The Times in London reported that the documents were obtained from a security consultant of the Italian Military Intelligence from a woman on the staff of the Niger embassy in Rome. No one to date has been able to connect Bush or Cheney with creating or providing those documents.

In this case, the Court of Suck has no credibility.

            Hello Shanshayla,

I am glad we do not have much to disagree about, at least I don't think so. Not that it makes all that much difference in the broad view, but motive is always a question, including why that yellow cake paper came about. I believe that Bush and Cheney believed fundamentally that they were doing the right thing invading Iraq, and I did too for probably the same reasons. I regret that they adopted other ill-founded beliefs that have cost so many lives and misery that should have been prevented.

On this fundamental point, I do have to agree with Repub. His main theme, though, is his way to oppose the hate, prejudice, lies etc. employed by my party and so many within it. I am ashamed of my party for this. IMO he is more right than wrong... I wish the party would get back on track with this, stop blaming the press or whatever for the loss of the election, and return to the practices that have kept me in the party so long. I have not lost hope yet, but I am disturbed by how many here will call me and others fakes just because we think independently.

            Happy New Year to you!

Interesting. I would appreciate a credible, non biased and factual link to the yellow cake evidence if you have it.

          Thanks.

Google yellow cake and Niger and you'll come up with a mother load of links. I have to agree with 40YearR on this one - Bush, Cheney and co. were doing some pretty under-handed things.

Yes to all of the above. Yep, and your spelling is improving but still deficient. I'm proud of you for the strides you've made. If you were a dog I'd pet your head right now and give you a doggie biscuit for a trick well done.

    Mr Zakaria,

By placing President Elect Obama at the top of the "Power" list, does nothing more then reinforce what you have stated about people thinking he is "the one". Well, he's not and he surely will not solve the economic crisis in the United States.

I say this because of the following reasons which for some reason or other people like you and others don't seem to understand.

First off the vast majority of the 18 to 45 age group are part of the "I want it and I want it all now" generation, who by the way, voted for President Elect Obama.

With that being said, what you or the rest of our so called "wise representatives" fail to understand is regardless of how much money is given to lending institutions, the group I just referred to is so far in debt, they couldn't get a loan or borrow money if their life depended upon it.

They have bought more house then they could afford, are more then $11,000 in credit card debt, own two SUV's sitting in the driveway with their overpriced house, have two or three kids who want nothing but "designer clothes, want to make top dollar when they graduate from college, want to own the latest and greatest in gadgets, go out to eat every day of the week, and don't have a savings account living on $80,000 a year.

Now you tell me if President Elect Obama is going to solve that delema. The only way that will be solved is if he gives every working person in this country money in hand. .

    Steve KJR
