Vacationing in a 30 million dollar mansion in warm hawaii while the rest of the country shivers and worries about money? Obama can do anything and the liberal press will kiss his rear end and smile.

So, the yet to be sworn in President Elect taking a deserved vacation (I know that beach, house probably worth more like $3 to $5mm: I've rented houses there several times for parties, not all that expensive) burns your ass. But the current President just giving away more that $300B, no strings, is less important to you?

      • Posted By: pbpace @ 12/29/2008 10:02:16 AM

I agree. O deserves a vacation. But let's also agree your partisan ass would be all over McCain if he were sunning his pigmentally-challenged body in Hawaii.

Education is primarily taken, not given; it is at best well offered. Which sums up the failure of our national debate on education.

Well, ditto loans. Congress is decrying that 'the banks have all this money, but are not lending.' Is that the case, or is what they mean, 'under the old credit bubble/tear off credit rules?'

Ie, are drunken sailors finding it freshly tough at the newly spanked banks, and are folks with high credit scores accurately assessing the current free-for-some, and staying away from anything smacking of risking future skin in the current graceless clawing tribal mess?

How do you force beast building risk takers to risk their skin in the tribe's economies? You don't, and in fact, discourage them by throwing a free-for-some. If the tribe is throwing a graceless free-for-some, then the tribe is going to attract a lot of failure. When 'success' in America is redefined as 'proximity to connected cronies in DC', then DC will attract precisely what it is attracting; failures.

Atlas Shrugged was a cartoonish, romantic novel, with way too hopeful an ending. It's fun to nervously laugh at. But, we've already been treated to the once term of art 'save the industry as a whole,' so can the Anti-Dog-Eat-Dog Rule be too far behind, and will it be proposed in order to 'save capitalism' in the next Big Lie? An analyst who correctly predicted the current mess has been telling his folks to head out of Dodge, to hunker down, to 'duck.' Not quite a strike, but close enough. We'll see if it matters.

I won't even begin to believe any of our tribal leaders have a clue, until they stop referring to our economies as 'The Economy.' I'm not holding my breath for Obama to 'save capitalism,' because I've never been alive at a time when I've seen much of it. It has been at least since FDR that we have lived under 'mixed economies' goodness, and yet I have to wonder: At the top of every Mixed Economist's List of Important Things To Do, isn't "Beware of Monopolies" like #1 on the list?

And yet, our fascists are propping up entities 'too big to let fail.'

And yet, our fascists are using FNMA and GNMA SEC EXEMPT, AGENCY RATED GSEs to brush aside 50 sets of more strongent state banking regulations.

If monopolies are everybody's bobbing their heads bad ideas to let loose in our economies, then how good can monopolies with guns be?

We love our monopolists with guns, and are begging for more as we speak. We've asked the arsonists to come in and help fight the fire they started, but not without first handing them all a Mobil Speedpass.

WTF?!? Fascinating thesis..and this relates to fascism how???

If you had read the articles at the links, you would have seen that this post relalted to the quoted language on banking regulations.

Ok..in other words this has nothing to do with fascism...thanks for clearing that up. Can you say non-sequitur?

obama needs to restore the ideals of the society that stood for the land of free and brave -not the fascists and the boars -
never mind if it annihilates capitalism WHICH survives in the form of SUV S

    • Posted By: Bill Smith @ 12/23/2008 12:32:58 PM

How is he going to restore "the land of the free and the home of the brave" when he fully supports stealing wealth from others? How is theft associated with freedom?

      • Posted By: Horrible Bastard @ 12/23/2008 1:06:54 PM

Taxes are not theft. Hyperbole does not serve your argument.

        • Posted By: Bill Smith @ 12/29/2008 9:20:58 AM

          So they are voluntary?

        • Posted By: pbpace @ 12/23/2008 6:45:01 PM

Depends on whom you ask, how much and what's being taxed. At best, it's legalized extortion that's existed throughout history. I agree that we need some taxes to support military and basic governmental functions.

          As always, you're welcome!

Are taxes voluntary then? Do I have a choice to pay them or not?

      • Posted By: Repubssuck @ 12/23/2008 5:13:39 PM

If you're really dedicated to your cause, why would you pay them?

Ask the many people that have died or are in prison for not paying up to the crooks. But then again you support the evil of theft and murder.

Wall street bolted to the hip of K-Street backed by monopolists with guns is not capitalism; it is fascism.
Business interests tied to the guns of government are monopolists with guns; fascists.
I'm damn glad this nation stood up its own soft fascist beast in 1941, to face down meat eating totalitarian alternatives. A nation half our present size put 16 million of themselves into uniform, borrowed the equivalent of over $3T in today's dollars to ramp up the Arsenal of Democracy, and left over 400,000 of themselves in a meatgrinder. We owe them every free world economic opportunity that their actions enabled since. But in so doing, we stood up our own soft fascist self feeding beast, and it has never stood down since. There is not a special breed of people called 'the fascists' that live only in Europe. 'The fascists' are who inevitably come running to the guns and business crony free-for-some that the tribe unleashes for any cause, including, really good ones. I'm not sure the Greatets Generation would have left all those legs in Normandy if they realized taht when it came to Totalitarianism, their clueless kids were quietly going to preside over the Totalitarian equivalent of Macy's buying Gimbel's We don't and have not had 'nearly enough beast building capitalism' in this country for decades. We have had,. at most 'carcass carving capitalism, and when increasingly bolted up to the guns of government, carcass carving fascism. Too often, our brainy elites sprint from the Ivies to Wall Street to stare at the scoreboard and bet on the game using OPM, with no skin in i, and then dream up financial engineering nonsense, enabled by their self awarded 3000% leverage rules, aka, license to steal. We have a dearth of beast building risk takers(limited as they are to a more reasonable 15% asset value leverage constraint), and a flood of carcass carvers, that is what has become of 'capitalism' in America. Well, our economies long tolerated a certain amount of carcass carvng, and scoreboard betting, and other forms of parasitism, and now, just a little, the bones are beginning to show. An odd corollary to Gresham's law is in effect in our tribal free-for-some, and that is, drunken sailor borrowers have displaced beast building risk takers. Few sane risk taking beast builders are interested in risking future skin in the current tribal free-for-some the tribe is trying to throw, and if Obama figures that out, then he has a prayer of 'saving capitalism.' If not, he's the midwife of the coming Mad Max World.

Your point about people being drafted at gun point is absurd. Did this happen? Perhaps, but please show me your sources. Many willingly and enthusiastically joined. Now if you want to make the point that they were duped by a bunch of propaganda and flag waving jingoism...then you might have a point...MAYBE.

      • Posted By: Combat Goldfish @ 12/23/2008 2:43:22 PM

No one was enslaved to fight in WW2. The US involvement in that war, has kept you from being an oven baked good or from speaking German.

I think you're confusing Austria and Czechoslovakia (Sudetenland). The Austrians - most of them - were enthusiastic or indifferent about union with the Reich. That's why when the badly disorganized German troops entered Vienna there was no armed resistance.

That is impossible since we have not had anything close to a free market since before 1787. We have a heavily regulated market. The same ignorant people under Franklin ???the Demon??? Roosevelt said the same thing and dragged on what would have been a light recession for over a decade.

I find the sub-title of this article rather bemusing.
Surely Mr.Obama will be 'judged' by whether he becomes one of the many new-era leaders we all need to guide this planet in a better direction. We know communism isn't the answer, but who's to say capitalism is the correct model for this world? It's not as though it has proved to be so thus far, has it? Indeed, the pursuit of money has proved to being nothing but futile, and not least as it destroys our most valuable asset, the environment. Perhaps saving capitalism isn't the most appropriate way forward. Perhaps saving capitalism isn't his intention. Perhaps saving capitalism was not the reason why he was voted in. At least, I hope not. But then who am I to judge?

  • Posted By: JRwan @ 12/27/2008 6:29:55 AM

Jim... What in the world you want him to do? Beat himself across his back with a belt until the stock market recovers, or how about, go on a hunger strike? The stock market will not recover until all of us start acting as if it is not an issue and start lending and spending money. Yes, some folks lost their jobs and cannot afford to spend money, but those who can needs to do so.
Some of us as Americans complain too much and is entirely too damn selfish. If something good happens to someone, I guarantee somebody will have sometime negative to say. As a nation, we should put aside our differences at this stage of our history and confront our challenges, but instead we are acting like 3-year-old kids fighting over lollypops.
Every day I see outstanding young Americans putting their lives at risk in order to give our Country a chance to be great again for all of us. They serve not just for conservatives, progressive, or independence, but for the USA. I???ve been serving our great country for over twenty years and it the young Soldiers that continues to inspire me daily not you old fools.

Where to start? The entire premise that capitalism needs saved is false of course, and then to suggest that a Left wing politician - any politician - can "save" such a thing is only adding insult to a ridiculous notion.

I'll have to assume that Mr. Zakaria knows little about economics beyond the basic populist visions he absorbed in college, because to assume otherwise would be to cast him as unethical and intellectually dishonest.

  • Posted By: RO in Reno @ 12/26/2008 8:41:56 AM

Some one has to define "Capitalism" for me if you go to Wikipedia there are 24 varients of capitalism, none of which mention free enterprise which is the basis for capitalism and the significant difference between a democracy and communism.
The hard cold fact is Free enterprise is seemingly dead in this country largely killed off by the IRS.
While the tax laws are written to encourage startup business if you do, I can garantee the IRS will be there to kill it.
They brag about 7 out of 9 small business's failing in the first three years but they cause it to happen.
Until the government comes to grip with it, we will continue to have a system that is in all reality an Elitist Corporate form of "capitalism" that serves the purpose and pocket books of the CEO's and not America at large.

mr obama if sincere can help but since it looks like india wants to keep kashmir as it then controls all the 5 rivers which water and feed pakistan and can attain a dictatorial stance as a bully in the subcontinent ,
it will be impossible to attain a kashmir solution ,

it can only be solved if china russia and america are behind the effort as
obama himself has no chance alone

I'm just guessing, but I'd say that "temporarily cutting the U. S. corporate tax rate to 10% and cutting the capital gains tax rate to zero would help a lot. Much as the Fed is now keeping the rates on treasurys so low that it's daring investors to buy equities, cutting corporate and capital gains rates could be irresistable to companies and investors.

I didn't vote for Barack Obama, but I believe he's clearly the right guy for the mess we're in. His intellect and charisma will be tested, but I'm betting he's up to the job of president. Capitalism will never be the same, but the U. S. has the chance to reinvent itself under his leadership. The country now seems ready to buy whatever he's selling.

those of us who are real capitalists don't need a savior-politician or "the one" in any form.

we need only our own good judgment and honesty to prosper and while we welcome fair regulations and another set of eyes from the government as to the safety and soundness of certain types of businesses, what we don't need is a bunch of corrupt politicians on the take in the form of campaign contributions from lobbyists to lecture us or to decide what is wise, because bribe taking is usually not the path to wisdom.

M was pulling away from O in early Sept. and appeared headed for victory. Then the financial collapse happened. It wasn't Palin, PAC's, lobbyists or any other nonsense. You people make this WAAAAAAAAAYYYYY too hard. The American people have the intellect- and attention span- of a flea.
