Power belongs to the person with the most money and the skill to use it for the ownership of more power. Barack Obama is not even close.

I am so proud to see my real/reel HERO and role model Shahrukhkhan in this list. He came from a middle class family and through his sheer hard work, now a face of India Globally - I leave in Houston, Texas but truly happy to see him make it to this prestigious list

What a Joke of an Article this is!
These people are filling their pockets while people are dying of hunger, disease and killled everywhere.
There is no value of human life anymore.
......And not single one of the people listed will get their heads out of their butts to realize it.

If the author himself goes so far as to say that "all of us belong on a list like this", then why publish yet another inane, hierarchical list? I've been puzzling over lists like this since childhood, when Newsweek would be sitting unread on our kitchen table. Isn't it time to dispense with this practice? I have to agree with some of the conspiracy theorists in the comments section: this pretentious, shoddy article smacks of a cover-up.

A thought provoking article. One could easily add another 500 or 1000 deserving names to the list. I like the notion about the King and the philosopher. Extroverts tend to seek power and are able to move people but often are not good thinkers and are terrible at coming up with solutions to complex problems. Power very often is not awarded by merit but by connections with other people and relentless application of those connections which is why extroverts often become the CEOs and politicians of the world. In the age of televised elections this problem has become more exacerbated as elections are reduced to popularity contests where introverted thinkers who can solve problems need not apply. So is there any wonder why our current legislators have proven completely inept at solving any problems, such as say the financial meltodwn? Why is it then that we seem to have come to depend upon the executive branch to bring about real change to address crises? The answer to that is simple in that the president has a chance to appoint thinkers and philosophers to his cabinet or use them as advisers where as legislators are not able do this to any great extent. A wise person of power picks these kinds of advisers to distribute and wield the power that they have gained. From what I have seen the Obama administration is off to a good start. We all know how much of a disaster the President'Bush's cabinet/advisor picking turned out to be. Going back to my original point about what a negative influence television has been, ask yourself who would have voted for Thomas Jefferson during the television era? IF you don't believe me then you should have seen how many people told me they voted for Bush because he is the guy they would rather have a beer with at a bar. I think the point about the internet and Al Gore is valid. Through the influence of the internet, which I argue is more a medium for introverts than extroverts, more introverted people will have a chace to rise to power again, and I think the end results will be beneficial for all. Arguably the internet trend began with Howard Dean and has been passed along to Gore and Obama. One cannot help but see that Gore and Obama seem to at least have that capacity for deep thinking which the likes of Bill Clinton and president Bush lack and both of their power bases now have deep roots in the internet. With regardsto president Clinton, I think it is obvious that he did a mich better job of surrounding himself with competent advisors.

it's tragic that people reading this article are being kept in the dark about the truly sinister, 85% population reducing, cancer poisoning, child snuff porn sex slave abducting, alien invasion hoaxing, false flag terrorist 911 demolishing, real elite, the new world order. the list is misdirection. if they won't tell you, search the internet. you wont find what you're not looking for.

keywords: illuminati, bilderberg group, 911 truth, false flag terrorism, blue beam, new world order.

    This article is misleading.

Newsweek had to know better than to name people who at most can only be considered sub-elites.

Angela Merkel Gordon Brown and the Clintons etc. are merely hood ornaments. They're order takers who act as a mask for the true powers who want to remain hidden from view.

The true power elite in the world include but are not limited to: the shareholders of the Federal Reserve banks, the Warburgs, Rothschilds, Rockefellers, Queen Beatrice, the Queen of England, the inner circle of the CFR, the Trilateral Commission, the Carlyle Group, the Saxe-Coburg-Gothas, the Morgans, Harrimans, and Carengies.

At least 1 person here knows who the real power elite are. Good post D. Raines.

This list is absolutely ridiculous and laughable at best. What's worse, the people at Newsweek know better but hey, Newsweek, how about doing an expose on the next Bilderberger meeting. The steering committee could, if pushed, give you a much more accurate list to call 'elites'.

      • Posted By: D.Raines @ 12/22/2008 6:12:07 PM

        Thanks J. Cameron

        Good point.

If Newsweek is serious about running stories about the elite, why don't they ever do any in-depths about the real power brokers - groups like the Bilderbergers or the CFR and Trilateral Commission? They could at least let people know these groups exist and publish a list of members and attendees.

... and Brad Pitt ... and Madonna ... and Angolina Jolie ...

  • Posted By: Awakenthemasses @ 12/22/2008 5:43:22 PM

This list is a joke. No Rothschild or Rockefeller? How about the IMF? Or any member of the CFR or the Bilderberg group. By no, Oprah Winfrey made the list. I love corporate media, they're just the best.

  • Posted By: Awakenthemasses @ 12/22/2008 5:41:34 PM

That list is a joke. No Rothschild or Rockefeller? Obama number 1? How about the IMF as number 1 then go down through the list of CFR and Bilderberg members. Oprah Winfrey? WTF. Wake up people. Wake up please.

    Peace on Earth !

Looks like a very thorough investigation - but you forgot Tom Cruise & Britney Spears. And Elmo.

  • Posted By: elijah.stewart @ 12/22/2008 4:47:12 PM

How can you possibly have a list like this without names like Robert Byrd & David Obey ( chairman appropriations committee), Charles Rangel & Max Bachus ( chairman of tax policy), Patrick Leahy & John Conyers ( judiciary chairman), or supreme court. Surely this list is compiled by a guy stuck in a ivory tower too long. Pope Benedict lets be serious people.

Typical left wing media bias, not a real conservative in the top 50 most powerfull people on earth. The Reagan revolution lasted almost 30 years- what did all the conservatives suddenly and mysteriously die? Dream on libs, the moral majority is still here, we just had enough of conservatism for a while, just like when we elected Clinton. We'll get our fill of Barack soon enough...

What about robert byrd and richard obey chairman of appropriations in the house and senate. These men control more money than all of the people on this list combined perhaps.

  • Posted By: DrewCAENG @ 12/22/2008 5:21:16 AM

Its funny how the cry of media bias is so often used. Newsweek is "biased" because Obama is at the top of the list. c'mon people! The president of the USA is going to be at the top no matter who it is, McCain, Clinton, Palin, Nader however. Its about relevancy in the world. Further more the articel wasnt about Obama but the idea and concept of power throughout history and the criteria which Newsweek used in contructing the list. The liberal media complaint is being way too overused, simple because an article exists that may be related to Barak Obama in some way if it doesnt include anything negative then watch out the war cry will be only a few minutes away, its pathetic.

The far right wackos don't want President at the top of the list. they want him in the back of the bus!

  • Posted By: Libricrat @ 12/22/2008 12:05:23 PM

I'm as skeptical as the next person about media bias, government power and conspiracies. Once again I mostly see people at each other without so much substance. Yes, so much of what is printed everywhere on the internet (to include here) is garbage. You have to read for a long time before you find the needle in the haystack. The needle here is the statement.." The political energy in the country is being harnessed by a younger and more diverse group than it has been in ages past." Nothing in the article is more true and more relevant to current events and discussions. Gen Xers (and younger) have finally settled down a little bit and begun to vote. This is both good and bad depending on your location on the political plane but, this will be the key to power as the baby boomers begin to be outnumbered by thier offspring.

    • Posted By: Repubssuck @ 12/22/2008 12:43:10 PM

I doubt the Baby boomer will outnumber their offspring, but if they do it will be a temporary condition , to be sure. As far as the attacks being directed ay each other, that won't change. the article is quickly obsured, if read at all. Most of us have a bone to pick with each other. I hope none of us think we're going to change someone to our way of thinking. It's more like a campaign that a debate.

My. how you do go on. Power has meant an opportunity to enrich oneself as evidenced by the Clinton spectacle and now the power of the Chicago machine has propelled Obama's climb thru the sleaze of Chicago to find that they have just brought it with them. To the White House. Of course a complicit press, as power hungry as any politician, will giive him the adultaion he demands and carefully overlook the sleaze just like they do with the Clintions. It is kind of the audacity of hope is a sleazy joke. What we have here is the Audacity of Power. For the nextfour years anyway.
