ExxonMobil continues to outshine its competitors under Tillerson, a company lifer who became CEO in 2006. Tillerson did battle for the industry on two political issues this year: global warming and calls for new taxes on profits from the oil-price surge. At the spring annual meeting, descendants of founder John D. Rockefeller openly criticized the company—a first—for neglecting alternative fuels. Tillerson told the crowd that oil and gas remains a great investment, and the Rockefeller-led resolution calling for a company climate-change report won only 10 percent of the vote.
