David Ansen, an otherwise distinguished film critic, must be suffering from temporary insanity having given his best film of the year award to the Swedish hack horror travesty, LET THE RIGHT ONE IN. I walked out of the film after 40 minutes because it was unrelentingly boring, sick, clumsy, and very, very poorly directed. This shows how critics are deeply out of touch with reality,

actually i applaud ansen for not putting slumdog and benjy button here
    they were ludicrously absurd
    thanks david

MAN ON WIRE IS PROOF THAT AMERICANS ARE OBSESSED WITH FRENCH MEN WITH ACCENTS
IT IS A MEDIOCRE DOCU DRAMA WITH VERY SILLY INDULGENT CHARACTERS WHO BEHAVE LIKE SCHIZOIDS ON CRYSTAL AMPHETAMINE

IF THEY WERE NOT FRENCH THE AMERICANS WOULD HAVE CALLED THEM TERRORISTS
    LOLZ

Well though out, your points cannot be argued with, you, sir, should be movie critic. lolz.

Most of these movies wre so boring so I therefore conclude that Ansen is pretty boring as well! By the way tropic thinder
was not funny but silly! There is a difference. Im sure that Vietnam Vets didnt appreciate it either.

man on wire was an indulgence for pseudo intellectuals who think 9 snapshots make a great movie
lolz -they have these snaps of the french nut walking on a wire and he is hoodwinking one security guard who seems to be sleeping like the audience in the theatre

    thats the movie
i was stunned like what did i just see for 10 quid s
comorrah is another mediocre over-rated crap and they gave it the best movie award in europe

    total degenerate cinema
days of ford and kubrick are gone forever
these movies are made for tele not a damned theatre
i would rather go watch scooby doo

Sheesh! I actually saw two of these movies, Man On Wire and Encounters at the End Of The World, at small independent theater and had to agree that they couldn't draw more than 50 people a week. Watching Encounters was like watching a rich bastard's home movies - nice high quality video but the subjects chosen were booorrriiinnggg to anyone who didn't get to go. Man On Wire was a 15 minute movie compressed into 90 minutes.

9 and 10 were a tie! There are 10 movies, you just had to read the entire article, that's all.

That must be why Dtriniman was laid off. He misses details and then freaks about it.

  • Posted By: sharilyn3 @ 12/30/2008 2:52:57 PM

Yes, Man On Wire was wonderful. I saw it online, actually. I'm surprised not to see Burn After Reading on the list. Wonderful movie.

it is ansens prerogative to suggest -one should not be picking on the gentleman -he is only helping or trying to help -WHO ARE THE REAL CRITICS
IF THERE IS SUCH A THING
criticism is subjective analysis and anyone can do it on their own as we are all subjects only

Ithought this was Ansen???s 10 Best Movies. Didn't someone notice that thre are only nine movies listed here. Don't know why I care anyway. Most of these moview were panned by the "real" critics.

"Ansen???s 10 Best Movies"?? There's only nine listed here. I'm being laid off and there's an idiot at news week who didn't notice only nine movies are listed??!! Bet she/he getting a big bonus too.

    thanks for the suggestions newsweek
i have seen few of these mentioned and i found them watchable but nothing really rewarding -i think it was a bleak miserable and dull year at the movies like most other things as well
    happy new year

I appreciate critic who point out movies that may not have received any hype but deserve being checked out. I love pure entertainment movies, but I also like to be surprised by little gems that get little-to-no marketing and/or attention. I have found a few treasures from critics like this! Thanks for the possibility of finding another.

Oh good heavens, it's both amusing and a little scary that there are people who look at this opinion list and instead of thinking that hey - they missed some films that might be worth checking out, instead, they are reacting in anger and fear because they haven't heard of them. Frankly, I haven't heard of some of them, but I'm grateful to have had something new, and possibly even ultimately elightening, offered to me. No, not every film need to enlighten, educate, and expand -- there nothing wrong with just entertainment. But nonetheless there is little to be gained by living in a narrow world. Instead of being angered by and afraid of it, it just might be and interesting exercise to check new options out. (Don't worry, banal fare such as the "The Hills" and "Real Housewives of Atlanta" aren't going anywhere! ) But thank you David Ansen for giving me some new selections to add to my NetFlix list.

Why would these cinder-heads even read Newsweek if they aren't open to learning something outside their tiny spheres of experience? Please, just stick with watching MTV or reading Rotten Tomatoes or whatever dreck you're used to.

how can you say the reviewer sucks and is pretentious and picking esoteric movies...if you haven't seen most of them...by YOUR own admissions....its not an empirical list, you can still like what you like...wow, you guys getting coal for xmas or something? so cranky
