I think you are exactly right. I also know for a fact, that Edwards conduct is not uncommon when a husband watches his wife suffer through a long and lingering illness. I think it is a form of escapism for them, it is just that Edwards is famous, and the other men I have known that engaged in the exact same behavior were not. Edwards remains by Elizabeth's side, so I believe his commitment is to her.
If Americans ever do elect a woman president, I hope it is a woman EXACTLY like Elizabeth Edwards, and not the self-serving Sarah Palin.
