Maker's Mark is the smoothest bourbon I have found. I was never a big bourbon fan, thinking all of it tasted like Jack Daniels, you might as well chew on a piece of charcoal. I had no interest in trying anything else. Then a friend made me a Manhatten with Maker's Mark, and won me over.

It's funny how Washington had a distillary, when he was the the man used to drive all the whiskey distillers out of Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania whisky makers and other casualties of the, " Whisky War" fled to Kentucky to evade government taxes. They took with them the Pennsylvania Long rifle ( Kentucky Rifle ), and bourbon ,as we know it ,wasn't invented till much much later.

Woodford Reserve is a treasure to be sure. For a good standby Bourbon, Maker's Mark is one of the best. I, too, have had my fair share of Maker's Mark Manhattan's. What do you guys think, is a -true- Manhattan on the rocks, or "up"?

If you are mixing or infusing bourbon with anything at all other than a small amount of spring water then you must not have any "bar ethics". Good Ky bourbon does not need any changes or tweeks. Some of the better brands are Eagle Rare Single Barrell, Four Roses' Single Barrell and Willett Pot Still.

Also, learn how to spell "Barrel" before peppering your posts with the word.

That's ridiculous. Bourbon's flavor (unlike, say, Scotch) is very compatible with other ingredients in cooking, cocktails, infusions, etc. There are a world of great bourbon and rye based cocktails. Inexpensive bourbons are great for mixing with and any serious connoisseu, as opposed to a "purist" snob, can appreciate a good bourbon-based cocktail. Get off your high horse, my friend, and have a drink.

While I have always been a Marker's mahattaan man, Eagle Rare neat is slowly converting me.

Oh bourbon, brownest of the brown liquors...
    What?
You want me to drink you?
    But I am in court!

I am a huge fan of Bullit Bourbon

    For a nice cocktail try:
    2 oz bourbon
    2 oz spicy ginger ale
    2 splash bitters

    The Horsefeather!

    An ode to bourbon:

The more I know the more I forget
The more I forget the less I know
The less I know the less I forget
The less I forget the more I know

Black Maple Hill from Bardstown KY. I could drink it all day...

I think if you research it a little more, you'll find that George Washington produced a type of Rye Whiskey at Mt. Vernon. Bourbon as we know it today was developed at some point in the latter part of the 19th century.
