This article is typical of the BS the media tries to protray blacks as being ignorant poor souls. It is as if you want to know about blacks, you go to the ghetto. So if I need to know about whites, I need to go to the trailer parks, or hispanics, the barrios. Give me a break, most blacks are living middle class lives, trying to support and educate their family. It like here in Atlanta, when the media needs a new story about blacks, they go to the low income area to represent blacks, you never see them in the subdivision, where blacks are educated, live in $200,000+ homes, drive nice cars, raise their kids, and support their community. And believe me, that where the majority of blacks are in this town. See when you need a story about whites, lets go to the low income areas, where they live.

Don't even present Atlanta as the representive of a good city-it is a piece of trash. At one time San Diego was nice- not any more

Barack Obama's election is a wonderful event for ALL Americans and not just African Americans (whatever that means). Barack Obama's achievement is personal for a lot of people for a lot of reasons. Women of ANY color who have unprotected sex with men who are not their husbands are just plain STUPID. Exposing oneself to the possibility of procreating with a man who cannot commit to YOU let alone a family. Men and women need to demand more from themselves. Period. Our society is being destroyed by our "gotta have it now" syndrome. That crosses all racial and class barriers.

    • Posted By: ??? ????? @ 12/29/2008 12:21:15 AM

You know what it means--A black American with African ancestors. I bet you have no problem saying Irish American, German American and so on.
This article was stupid. There aare just as many whites having children without being married--not counting the ones they abort. The writer is ignorant, and the article was meaningless.

      • Posted By: Wendi @ 12/30/2008 10:08:08 PM

Honestly, VERY few "white" people call themselves "Irish-American" or "English-American" or "German-American" unless they or their parents were born in that country. We consider ourselves White Americans. If you're going to be that technical about it, you should know your ancestors' country of origin (i.e. Uganda, Rowanda, etc.) because Africa is a continent.

        • Posted By: freda747 @ 12/31/2008 12:01:21 AM

Once again.....a white woman talks stupis nuevo-racism.
There are far more Irish, german, russian ,polish, ect American groups than Afro-American! Just GOOGLE IT...IDIOTS! These groups have been around longer!

get a life, freda747. In the end , you will be dirt. There is no other color. So don't try to be superior - last time I checked there was no Noble prize winner called Freda - you may be too smug for that too,

You are either an American or you are not. This hyphenated crap is stupid anyway since black, brown, and WHITE people come from Africa and Asia. There are no where near as many whites that have children out of wedlock. More than 70% of blacks have children out of wedlock, and most black children do not even know who their real father is.

        • Posted By: freda747 @ 12/31/2008 12:04:55 AM

Another idiot! "There is no hyphenated american..........BUT YOU BLACKS HAVE KIDS OUT OF WEDLOCK AND MOST DON'T KNOW YOUR DADDYS!"
The new racism= whites can sepearate you and call you ANYTHING but American, but if you do it, you are militant and separatist!

          • Posted By: Bill Smith @ 12/31/2008 9:27:50 AM

Nice ad hominem.Do you have anything else to offer?

    • Posted By: freda747 @ 12/30/2008 11:56:38 PM

YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT! It's not all the same. Black women have long been in a very different situation than white or asian women (when it comes to optiosin men and marriage).
I'm sick of whites using "we're all the same" to promote old fashion racism and dismissiveness! White women are the masters of "we're the same" to suggest that any differencesn the races are the fault of certain races and their immorality or cultural stupidity.

  • Posted By: dmb12345 @ 02/17/2009 8:29:39 PM

Maryann states the obvious, however it is profound. The family unit is central to the suucess of family anf the future of a country. We have destroyed the black family with liberal ideas and low expectations to the point that they do not even see themselves as a family unit. This destroys their children - unwed teen mothers and good for nothing boys who want to get into every pant there is including non-black.

The black population may need to swallow their pride and insist on non-black teachers and principals. Why not look for over acheiving Asians for starters and use them as an example.

How so? Is this a new "empowerment". Reserved for only those of "color"? Hey, we are all "colored"
Does the minority classification "change"? Welfare applications are simply rubber stamped for approval, if, you are of the correct "persuasion". Rampant abuse of social services, money grants, loan schemes, and "religeo-political" entitlements are what suck the economy dry. Hey, humans! When are you going to be just that?

  • Posted By: DaBell @ 01/10/2009 7:44:38 PM

The most profound thing you said in this article was "One of things I discovered during the research for the Marry Your Baby Daddy Day event is that many unwed couples with children simply lack role models and education about marriage. They have the will to marry, but just aren't motivated." This has been the case with me. I was raised by a single mother and never had the role models to look up to. Failed marriages were all I saw when I was growing up. Most of the guys I've dated were also raised in single parent homes and they had the same issues. Marriage isn't a priority when you don't see it being something as beautiful as the Obama's.

  • Posted By: wildechild66 @ 01/02/2009 2:53:59 PM

I would like to applaud Ms. Reid for her initiative to promote marriage within the black community. Marriage gets a bad rap, not just in the black community, but in popular culture as well. It "doesn't mean anything", it "limits freedom", and it "won't last anyway". The revival of marriage and courtship (a necessary predecessor) will be a powerful force for strengthening the foundations of our society, which benefits all families.

Unfortunately, so long as Jesse Jackson, and the Rev Al Sharpton are alive, blacks as a whole will suffer. Those two do more to harm black society than they've ever done in a positive light. Obama brings real hope to a lot of people, just not blacks.

    • Posted By: HungloPhucwell @ 01/02/2009 1:21:19 PM

      @ cindy_sue22

How do you figure that?? Exactly what type of 'harm' are you talking about?? If anything, blacks will need them more than ever now because of this "a-black-man-is-the-president-now-so-blacks-have-nothing-to-complain-about-anymore" complex that exists.

Jackson and Sharpton may have their personal flaws and may not appear to be as squeaky-clean as the president-Elect but please do not believe that the black struggle is over all of a sudden and that blacks no longer need strong representation and leadership when it comes to civil issues. Obama is going to be too busy being the president than to be out in the community at rally's and protests. Whom, then, takes up the mantle of leadership for the less-than-privileged and the voiceless amongst us (-or, are you one of those whom feel that there is no more struggle and that those that are still being neglected, exploited and disadvantaged are of their own fault)???

  • Posted By: HungloPhucwell @ 01/02/2009 4:14:21 AM

Marcus Garvey- would be able to see through all of this.
Huey Newton- would be able to see through all of this.
Malcolm X- would be able to see through all of this.

-Even, Tupac Amaru Shakur would've been able to see through all of this (if he were alive today- and, if he weren't busy using his celebrity status to convince the "hip-hop generation" to get out the vote just because of a black candidacy).

  • Posted By: HungloPhucwell @ 01/02/2009 4:00:29 AM

Until the conditions that cause the 'hood' to be what it is in the first place cease to persist, this nation having a black president won't really even matter. I agree with anyone whom has suggested that it shouldn't require seeing a black First Family in the White House (lol- what an oxymoronic pun) for black people to re-think their self-esteem and goals because it shouldn't.

Unfortunately, what I see as a cultural result from Barack's prior candidacy and subsequent election-win is the beginning of a classism division within the black community that actually began to burgeon during the Clinton years due to the seeming prosperity that allowed for "black-flight" to suburban lifestyles. Blacks will be blaming and finger-pointing to each other about the conditions that differentiate between those faced with inner-city hardship and poverty and those that have apparently moved up and ahead in society (-Indeed, this has already been occurring and will continue to).

This is the "house" versus the "field"- but on a different level at a different time. Blacks will seemingly not be able to blame the "powers-that-be" anymore because the powers-that-be are seemingly "black".

  • Posted By: shill123 @ 12/27/2008 8:07:09 AM

Funny how "The Messiah" has or will solve all of the problems in the Black community. Interesting that "The Messiah" has never stood up for anything remotely civil rights related and is not a descendat of slaves. I wonder if America would have been so accepting if he had any sort of civil rights agenda or was a descendant of slaverly. "The Messiah" is a politician and he will do what politicians do- lie. The comparisons of "The Messiah" to King are blasphemous. Because a black now occupies the highest ranking 'govment' job all the ills that we face as a community should be considered solved.

    • Posted By: doccee @ 01/01/2009 6:01:46 PM

What does being a descendant of an African slave have to do with determining Obama???s cultural identity? I get sick and tired of hearing this idiotic and ignorant comment ad nauseaum. Go look up the historical effects of colonialism and see the comparison. Being the descendents of oppressed people should make a lot of people want to live a better life than the life of their ancestors, sadly it's not true for the majority of black people. After our ancestors were given their freedom some folks are still stuck refusing to move forward because they are still looking back thinking that "massah" is still looking over their shoulders and holding them back when it???s actually themselves who are doing so. If you feel that you are undeserving than nothing will help you desire to live a better life. It???s totally up to you! (long echo)

You must remember that the prez elect is cousin to bush ,and the only way to see if a prez is worthy is to give him a try in the spotlight. However if you know your history and look into the near future you will under stand that if you have no money then the game over. The O is black although he is different then the american black check his heritage I belive that this is what he is trying to imply. Remember some of the american blacks still have a slave mentality. You see the people around the world dont want to be black but they like the black culture (see music

    • Posted By: Bill Smith @ 01/01/2009 2:00:19 PM

Interesting. Obviously you were "educated" in a government school. I suspect too that your "knowledge" of history is nothing more than what came out of a government school textbook.

  • Posted By: apena01 @ 12/31/2008 12:09:18 AM

My issue with the whole thing is that black people act like he's all black, that he's one of them and he's not, he's only half. They need to understand that he can't change the ghetto, people from there will never change!!!
What's funny is that they had these young ladies on TV that attended black college the reporter asked on why they voted for obama and all they could say was because he was black. That says enought!!

    • Posted By: Certified Poster @ 12/31/2008 5:14:47 PM

I disagree with you. First, having a very colorful family I can tell you that 1) Many black people realize that Obama is biracial, 2) Biracial is still considered black once you bypass a certain hue (if you aren't far enough in the media light for them to dissect your ancestry, and 3) I have come from "the ghetto" and will be attending law school in the fall. Many of the people I grew up with are either dead, in prison, or unemployed/in low wage jobs. Although I have come far - I don't kid myself of the impact living in neighborhoods where you must arm yourself to survive, where when you are stopped by the police you are subjected to your face on the concrete, and where there are little opportunities doesn't take its toll.

Obama cannot save poor communities, but for most "ghetto" residents - it is also virtually impossible to visualize a different life. Education is key. Help from those that have made it is key. Belief from outsiders that it is possible is key.

  • Posted By: calimom @ 12/31/2008 1:42:05 PM

@ Richmond Andrew - since the article CLEARLY states "BLACK" famililes & you've offered that you are a person of color but NOT Black - Sherlock, you wouldn't relate to the "BLACK EXPERIENCE/COMMUNITY." It's obvious you're not African American. Otherwise, you would know that not ALL of us attend church, see Mr Perry's films on opening day & all of that other stereotypical nonsense you spewed. A person of color can be anything but white. That doesn't mean people of YOUR color struggled & continue to do so in a nation that was shaped from prejudice.

    • Posted By: Bill Smith @ 12/31/2008 3:13:10 PM

I know of brown, black, and white people who have really come from Africa. What color are you?

  • Posted By: Richmond Andrew @ 12/31/2008 9:57:10 AM

I really feel the need to insert a "some" into the article's title. In my family, we have always held ourselves to a standard we considered "normal" and never relied on excuses for failure. My parents were married before any of their children were born (or conceived). Maybe that's why I never questioned my value in society or my abilities. I'd be interested to see learn more about a correlation. I'll be finishing my second Masters degree in 2010. I trace this to my parents' emphasis on getting a good education. My role models lived at our house.
This article also broaches a topic that I often bring up with my friends: "The Black Community/Experience." What IS that? When I read/hear about "black people" in the news, often I can't identify with the group. As a kid, I got tired of hearing about all of the evil things "the white man" had done and was doing to "keep us down and hold us back" (yes, I'm of color). This garbage came from older uneducated blacks, including my Sunday school teacher (!) , so it's no small wonder I'm totally turned off religion. That's right! We don't all: go to church, have a subscription to Ebony, see Tyler Perry's movies on opening night, think teachers should learn "Ebonics" so inner-city kids can get a "fair" education, celebrate Kwanzaa, listen to rap, have rims on our vehicles, consider Obama some type of "savior", etc. [See religious views above].
Perhaps Obama and his family can be role modelsfor the people who've never had them in their homes, or who thought the Huxtables were "too white". I'll concede that. But please don't assume every person of color has been sitting on the edge of their seat waiting for someone to come along and tell them how to live a full, productive and law-abiding life.
    It just ain't so!

  • Posted By: CharInOhio @ 12/31/2008 3:09:27 AM

Why does it take a black President for the black community to take pride in themselves and not blame other people and situations they haven't bothered to get out of.....for all their problems? Pride comes from within....not from Obama....sorry.....While they may be proud of him as their new President, he is not a Messiah and their problems will STILL continue until they make an effort to change their OWN lives. Just because they haven't had a black President did NOT make them have children out of wedlock, did not make them turn to poverty and street crime instead of jobs, and other things that has occurred....THAT was a BAD LIFE CHOICE and they need to take RESPONSIBILITY for that just like any OTHER RACE does. Since the LACK of a black President DID NOT CREATE the problems, having one will not FIX the problems......there are deeper reasons. If you need SOMEONE ELSE to validate YOU and what you chose to do with your life....that is NOT "healthy". There have been MANY African Americans who are worthy to be looked up to and who have achieved their dreams.....NOT JUST OBAMA......that being said.....THERE HASN'T BEEN "EXCUSES" for some time now. Anytime you use your race, your background, upbringing, or whatever else as an excuse....it will ALWAYS be like an anchor and will hold you back from your full abilities.....doesn't matter WHO you are, or WHAT COLOR either. What you become and achieve.....BEGINS AND ENDS WITH YOU !!!! Yes, you can be encouraged by others...but ultimately, its YOU that has to make that commitment and stick with it, and there ARE NO EXCUSES...you can only blame yourself.

As I've sat here and read through two pages of comments I am saddened by so many of the comments. There is so much hostility and anger from all races. I do think that all races are racist to a certain extent, it's sad but true. We have to stop blaming each other and step up to the plate to make a change, make a difference, and love and help our neighbor. I am white and tonight my daughter had some friends over, 3 were white and 4 were black. I stood at the bottom of the stairs listening to 7 teenagers play video games, talking, laughing, and just hanging out. It warmed my heart that it was just a room of friends not 3 white and 4 black, JUST FRIENDS. If you can't be part of the solution don't be part of the problem. Our country is falling apart and we have to stop blaming each other. We have to come together for our kids and for our future. We can't say welfare is stricktly a black or white issue-it's a poor person issue. Yes, I"m sure there are people on welfare that could probably work but there are people on it that do work and are helping themselves (black and white) To limit problems to just one race is ignorant. My parents grew up poor but my dad went to college on a football scholarship and got an education. Even then he worked 4 jobs when I was growing up so we could have more and I guess you could say I grew up "Middle Class" whatever that means. I'm from the South and I see things everyday that I don't agree with, most of which I speak up about but sometimes I wonder, "what's the point". Views are hammered into our heads from the time we're small and sometimes they just stick with us. But, if some act of kindness, a smile, or just a kind word can make a difference well, I guess I will keep on. When you go to bed pray that your children are safe and racism will one day not exist. But, until then try to be part of the solution, not the problem.
    p.s. I'm a country girl-not a redneck, there is a difference.

Well, I certainly hope the author is right and it is about time. It is just too bad it's taking an incompetent president-elect to make you see the obvious. i guess that is what we all have to sacrifice to give you a good role model. and perhaps if black women wouldn't have been so dogmatic about refusing to inter-marry with other races, they would have overcome the depressing life of tolerating failed black fathers and boyfriends long ago.

  • Posted By: dbtmellis @ 12/31/2008 1:14:04 AM

No matter what race you are, if you cant feed them then don???t breed them. Simple as that.

  • Posted By: Jayjustice @ 12/31/2008 1:12:27 AM

And "Marry your baby daddy day" is the most idiotic thing I have ever heard. how about find a good man and marry him without him having to be prodded and poked to the alter?
Marriage is not for everyone and I think we all understand that, but the laissez faire attitude is killing the community and we see it in the lack of respect for adults, the cursing in public by black and hispanic teens on public transportation, the lack of respect for human life that allows them to so casually kill each other daily, the lack of parental responsibility and supervision, and the list goes on. Yet when people like Bill Cosby point it out blacks get upset because they feel he is airing their dirty laundry.......
Stop relying on people such as this woman, and the Jesse Jacksons for moral, social guidance etc they only benefit from the victimization of black people. By continually making you victims by having you believe they are fighting for your cause as they get wealthy. America is your country, you are Americans so put your bags down and get to work.
