Yeah, I really agree with the view of Sen. Tom Harkin .Prevention is more effective than remedies. I hope American people can spend more time and money in how to live a healthy life. These days, the United States was trapped in economic crisis, which make it fail to afford the tremendous Medicare costs. I think it needs to change American???s attitude to healthy food and lifestyle rather than Medicare tech.

Great interview--I trust that Tom Harkin and Dean Ornish have Tom Daschle's ear! We need not only to get more fruits and veggies into the schools, we need to get the junk food out. Kids aren't allowed to smoke or drink--why do we allow them to abuse their bodies with junk food? We can save 200 Billion Dollars per year if we can change the way people eat.

I'm writing here for the first time and have no earthly idea where this may end up, but here goes......First, I say "Amen"to all of the preceding words. I'm an unemployed registered nurse with a grand total of thirty years within the healthcare arena. I also have a fair share of chronic health issues. I obviously already was acutely aware of the 'take a pill' phenonemon, but have recently acquired further illustration of this. I've resolved this year to clip and use coupons. This adventure, as early as this seventh day of 2009, has been quite an enlightening experience. I tend toward simple in my realm. With rare exception, I don't indulge in processed foods or many cosmetics and my over-the-counter medications and supplements are limited as well. For these reasons, I find very few coupons I can use. What I do find is evidence of excess. Excess--the cause of most of our human problems. Preventative care remains the only answer, and most importantly through education and nutrition. Time again for the ever recycling food pyramid. I've never done a formal study, but one might find it interesting that many a centurian still has most of their natural teeth. One measure that may prove fruitful is to take a glimpse back and examine what man was ingesting in 1909.

We do need preventative care, but the problem is that these insurance companies keep on saying that "Preventative care is too expensive!" which is a big LoC, that everyone in the insurance industry seems to believe or have been fooled into believing.
Excuse me, Jaray24, but nowadays, people ARE entitled to some thing: proper health care, proper shelter, etc. People like you are the ones who TERRIFY me, because they say "People aren't entitled to anything!" and then turn out to be slime who are swindling or KILLING other people, like the one person who I knew from high school who turned out to have murdered 10 people IN high school!

Please explain how you justify stealing wealth from others to pay for the so called entitlements? The reason we are in the mess we have now is because of the FDA and government regulations.

  • Posted By: Jaray24 @ 01/02/2009 8:06:25 PM

The only problem with the health care is doctors charge more for people with insurance, so they get more money, and with that the Pharm companies charge more also to cover their costs.

Other than these two things the health care system is way better than it was 150 years ago. We as Americans need to get out of the "entitlement mentality" and realize that things could be worse. Be greatful for what we have and look at those who lived 150 years ago and they lost half or more of their children. Go up, take responsility for yourself, and eat right and excerice that is the best health plan. But American's are to LAZY to do it.

    • Posted By: Bill Smith @ 01/04/2009 10:34:40 AM

The reason doctors charge more from people with insurance is because they have to in order to pay for the slime. Amerika's sick care system is government regulated. Of course the sheep are fooled to think different.

As someone who has witnessed so many loved ones die prematurely due to chronic diseases that could have been prevented, I find Senator Harkin's leadership one of the most hopeful harbingers of Obama's new administration. As some one with 2 young children, I am especially grateful that he plans to address the health & nutritional options made most readily available to our children at school. I applaud Senator Harkin's leadership!

Go back 150 years ago, and see what the health care was then. No one really complained it was life. My grandmother had a twin who died during birth because they didn't know the mother was carring twins. No one ever said what if, or the government should have known and done something about it.

As for now most are stuck in an "entitlement" mentality. We are not entitled to anything, just to live and die as it comes.

Whenever I put forth the concept of wellness care or prevention, people call me naive. Maybe so, but it's the current "sickness care" system that's really crazy!

I agree with Sen. Harkin. As a school teacher, I see the direct affects of poor nutrition on our youth. It is easier and cheaper to feed a family on junk. A jumbo box of snack cakes cost the same as a couple of nice apples or oranges out of season. I also agree that our youth need more exercise. Our "PE" system in schools do not work. Being given a bunch of dodge-balls and let loose on a court discourages most kids from getting active. Our schools need to work with kids to help them find an exercise program that works for them and maybe they will stick with it more than the one required year of "PE". I also help dental health will be addressed by the new administration. Even if a family has good health insurance, chances are they don't have good dental coverage. A person can go to the emergency room with an in-grown toenail, but can't get an absessed tooth fixed? That makes no sense.

    • Posted By: skinnyminny2 @ 01/02/2009 5:49:25 PM

It might be easier but it is not cheaper to feed a family on junk (dry beans, rice, lentils are all inexpensive).

Even when offered FREE food from food pantries, people will bypass the healthy greens and fruits and grab SPAM or hot dogs. They simply do not want to take the healthy food--even when it is free.

I think we should educate the general public and the policy makers about the lack of good nutrition found in todays produce isle. The way our produce is harvested before maturity, shipped, stored, and finally presented at the market does not make for good, healthy food in the end. It would be great if everything was grown locally and then eaten soon after. It's hard to imagine that being possible but it would be necessary if we are to get the nutrition required to achieve the outcomes you are after. Sure, some studies may support the health-full benefits of fruit and vegetable consumption, but did the produce used come from the real world or from the fresh and mature gardens unavailable to most of us?
Think about the real world situation most of us have available to us and please include the support for and of the responsible, quality, helpful companies that can and will continue to meet the standards set forth in the DSHEA act. I believe a quality nutritional supplement plan would go much farther in turning around this sick care vs prevention predicament we find our nation in now.
    Thanks for listening.

[ Part II ] Then on the private side, don't socialize it, just regulate it. Pass a set of laws such that: (a) Medical care is for profit but, set the profit rate like utility rates are set (except higher). (b) If you are going to mandate that patients can't be turned away you must also mandate that patients pay their bills. Make it illegal to get out of medical bills in bankruptcy. Instead, the hospital or clinic must finance you at a minimum rate (enough to keep up with inflation) and over time length appropriate for the amount financed (like a car note or mortgage if the bill is big enough). Enforce payment with community service, (say volunteering at a hospital) for non payment. (c) Mandate that employers must put a percentage (at least 2%) of your pay into a health savings account (along with a similar solution for SSN). Withdrawals out of this account can only be in the form of cashier???s checks to clinics and hospitals. Mandated responsibility is much preferable to socialism. (d). Do not make any laws that require employers to provide medical care. Tying insurance to employers makes employees less likely to look for better employment thus depressing wages a bit. Higher wages means more money for medical care. (e) Doctors, hospitals & clinics should no longer be litigated against in CIVIL court. All the litigation in the world won???t prevent mistakes.

    • Posted By: Bill Smith @ 12/30/2008 1:31:02 PM

All your solutions are fascist and basically the same as we have now in our heavily regulated system.

  • Posted By: Libricrat @ 12/30/2008 1:22:15 PM

[ Part I ] It's not that a lot of people are scared of socialized health care it's that they recognize that it is wrong and immoral. Socialized anything means that you must take from one, against that persons will (which constitutes stealing), and give it to another. Also, the government is the last resort organization you want to take care of anything. Do you really want the same organization that brought you social security to provide all of the country???s medical needs?
That said there are times when government has to provide some services that the free market will not, such as Police and Fire Dept. services. Now because of fairness issues and government inefficiencies, these services should be kept to a minimum but, even I will admit something must be done here. So, because you cannot compare values and shop around in an emergency, emergency services should be provided by taxes the same way that police and fire are. So, have government Ambulance and ER but, once a patient is stabilized and able to be discharged from the ER/or able to make their own choices about continued care and after care then they transfer over to the privatized side of the medical system. Add to this the "Lifestyle Contributed Surcharges" as previously mentioned for those that go to the ER for not wearing seatbelts, crashing their motorcycles (as I have done), etc.

    • Posted By: Bill Smith @ 12/30/2008 1:29:28 PM

This country was freer before there was government run police and fire departments. There is nothing the government can do that private enterprise can do cheaper and better.

  • Posted By: Libricrat @ 12/30/2008 1:26:28 PM

[ Part III] Any policies or laws pertaining to ???fixing??? health care must include the concepts of quest for profit (motivation to provide services), consumer choice and competition (providing for best quality at lowest price), as well as genuine personal responsibility which is the problem. The old adage about being able to lead a horse to water but, you can???t make him drink may sound funny but it is true. Taking millions of dollars from taxpayers for ???free??? vegetables that will mostly be thrown away is definitely not the answer. The true cause of the ???health care Crisis??? all comes down to the ???government (taxpayers) owe me and must take care of me attitude. People will not have real motivation to change unless, they suffer real consequences for their actions. This is basic human nature. No government program will change this.

  • Posted By: myopinionhere @ 12/26/2008 1:15:55 PM

That's what propaganda would lead you to believe, but if you look at emergency rooms outside of the US, the are NOT overflowing 24/7 like ours are.

    • Posted By: Bill Smith @ 12/30/2008 12:55:15 PM

Yeah, that is why they are dieing waiting for what would have been a normal procedure. Even if the system was perfect you would still need to steal wealth from others to pay for it.

  • Posted By: weathered @ 12/29/2008 12:14:38 PM

Socialized health care seems to scare a lot of people, but the capitalist health care system at work today has failed miserably. My handicapped 16-year-old sister couldn't even get approved for a wheelchair that my parents could not afford. The gov't system in place refused her three times. She had to live in a broken wheelchair for three years until they FINALLY came through. Give me a break. This may not be preventative, but I'd say it's a great example of neglegence on the government's behalf.

    • Posted By: Bill Smith @ 12/30/2008 12:51:08 PM

There is NO such thing as a capitalist health care system in America. We have a heavily regulated system forced onto us by the government that does little to actually help people and does almost nothing to promote prevention. The mere mention of using herbs and vitamins to cure or prevent disease gets the FDA SWAT teams breaking down your door at four in the morning. Here is an example of our heavily regulated sick care system at work:

You're a doctor. You need to bring in $3000 apiece for your most common procedure. But Medicare and Medicaid-- which pay for about half your patients--have just told you they're only going to pay you one-third of what they're billed. What do you do? You don't need to be a CPA to know the answer is to start billing everyone $4500 for your procedure. The half of your patients who pay full price thus pay $1500 extra, covering the shortfall for each Medicare/Medicaid-covered procedure.

Now the tricky question: If someone who's not on Medicaid or Medicare visits your medical office to have this procedure done, and promptly pays his $4500 in full, how much has he paid you this year?

And the answer is: $6000. Those who are not on Medicare or Medicaid are known as "taxpayers." Where do you think Medicare/Medicaid got the $1500 to pay for the welfare patient? The taxpayer pays $4500 for his own procedure, and then an extra $1500 in taxes to fund someone else's.

For all those who have been insisting that we need government to pay our medical bills because they're so high, let's keep this simple:

Medical bills are really high because the government promises to pay most of them, the same way government-backed "college loans" have driven up the cost of college, by allowing colleges to charge you whatever you can afford plus whatever the government will loan.

Perhaps it's still technically a minority of Americans who are currently "covered" by Medicare and Medicaid. But since the old and the poor (the latter often skimping on health maintenance and prevention) use the most medicine and medical care' the majority of medical costs are covered and "paid for" by these two socialist programs.

You people that support theft will get your one day.

Aren't we still talking about Socialized medicine where it takes a month or two to get in to see a Doctor on even the simplest med-problems?

    • Posted By: jp_negri @ 12/26/2008 3:54:34 PM

My wife & I were recently in London. She had a serious medical emergency. We were easily able to get in to see a doctor. My wife was well-taken care of, including ultrasound & follow-up visits. It cost us NOTHING, because the UK has nationalized healthcare. I was tremendously impressed and truly grateful. As far as I'm concerned, the sooner we socialize our healthcare industry, the better.

      • Posted By: Bill Smith @ 12/30/2008 12:37:18 PM

I see you enjoy stealing money from others to pay for your sick care system.

One of the easiest ways to improve the health of children in the US is to promote breastfeeding and make it the norm in this country. The WHO recommends breastfeeding exclusively for at least six months and extending breastfeeding into the child's second year. Breastfeeding provides the perfect nutrition at the perfect temperature and has shown to increase the health and the intellect of the child (as well as benefit the mother's health). It requires no manufacturing or transport and produces no pollutants, thus making breastfeeding better for the environment too.

These changes can come about BEFORE the medical system is changed. Each person can choose to live in a more healthy lifestyle.
Dean Ornish has written books about how to do this, and why it works. Go to Amazon.com and get the titles. I recommend especially his newest, "The Spectrum," and the NYT best-seller on heart disease.
I personally have experienced the benefits. I participated in the Ornish-led GEMINAL study in 2005, aimed principally at reducing prostate cancer. Today, I have no detectable prostate cancer. But more important, really, is that I'm healthier in so many ways, including lower cholesterol, lower blood pressure, lower body weight -- and MOST importantly, i simply FEEL so much better!
Those of us who participated in one or another of Dr. Ornish's medical trials still meet regularly, on our own. It's what he calls a Self-Directed Community.
I wish you could have been with us to see the Good Morning America crew, filming us doing yoga, stare in awe at Zeph Rose doing a shoulder stand. I said to them, "It's hard to believe Zeph was 85 last week."
I wish you could meet Mel Leffert, who participated in one of the early heart disease studies, even though his cardiologist thought he wouldn't live through the year. That was 22 years ago. Mel, now in his early 70's, just started a new company.
I wish you could talk to so many men and women who say things like:
"Getting prostate was one of the best things that ever happened to me, because I discovered how to be healthy and more alive."
"Life is just -- bigger -- now."
"I am more open in my relationships, more sensitive to the world I live in, and way happier."
"I wish everyone could discover, as I did, what a huge difference it makes living like this."

So, no, Kat Kat, we don't need to wait until the medical system is transformed. I hope it will be, and I think during the next 4 to 8 years we will see dramatic changes. Dean Ornish is one of the leaders of that change. But now, today, you can choose as an individual to take responsibility for your own health. Read the books, get some friends, and step into a new life of robust health and happiness.

I agree with JackMclure. Each of us has to be responsible for our own health. If we do that, we can stay healthy and not have to get into this broken system of repairing the damage after we allow it to happen. When I was diagnosed with prostate cancer twelve years ago, I thought it was a death sentence. I was fortunate to find Dean Ornish and become a participant in the early lifestyle trial. At 76, I am much healthier than when we started.
We can never be sure how long we will live. It makes sense to live a healthier, happier life while we are still here.

That will be a great day but what about right now?None of these politicians want to change a thing. The problem is the doctors and insurance company owners want to be rich.We have military hospitals all over the country fully staffed and ready to treat patients. Most of these hospitals are not busy at all.The Americans are being sold down the road.Well half of them anyway.I encorage all Americans to abandon our current system do not play their money game.We are all going to die sometime do not let the hospitals get all your assets on your way out.Other countries like Germany,Canada, and Japan make Americas health care system look juvenile.Demand your government does something now about the real problem of greed in our health care system.Preventable health care demands preventable screening. An apple is not going to prevent your onset of cancer. We need real solutions not more smoke and mirrors.Tare down the current establishment.

One may ask about the role of the drug companies. They don't make money when pepole are well and don't need medications.

I think every health insurance plan should come with a free or low cost gym membership.
