There is a global awareness now on the need to fix Islam - but darkness prevails on the best method - a solution that is simple and sure will evolve from here.Sounds far fetched ? Just consider the peculiar case of 1 million deaths in the Iran Iraq war- this was no Jihad with Kafir and hence all those dead went to hell for no fault of theirs except that they had Saddam as "boss" - in the post Lehman world we all agree that this is very unfortunate & avoidable case of bad direction by leadership , which brought ruin to followers!

A nuclear attack on middle east from either US or Israel canoot be ruled out at all - it appears to be very central to planners of Islamic life. As all muslims prey 5 times a day for death in jihad and seat in heaven ; this is the most practical way for a benevoilent kafir to delivery a heavenly martyrdom in jihad to all muslims on equal footing.... so that at the Allah's brothel - stock of 72 goats/ martyr can be enjoyed equally by each muslim.

This is an excellent article, but I would like to elaborate a little on one point you make.

You correctly note that we Americans tend to see the world through a prism that leads us to believe we're Masters of the Universe. You also note the economic crisis seems to be snapping Americans out of that daydream -- and that, too, is correct, but with a caveat: there are, unfortunately still some Americans (too many, in my view) who still believe in Fortress America. I have lived aborad since 1985, in Asia (except for a brief stint 1988-90 when personal circumstances took back to the U.S.), so my perspective is decidely different from most of my countrymen of all stripes. Nowhere is this more noticeable than when contrasting me with the Fortress America Americans.

Some of my own family and friends in the U.S. believe we should abandon the world, close the shores, ban foreigners generally speaking, and other such stuff. While it's true that not all of them are all highly educated and well-informed about international affairs (including the realities of cross-dependencies), some *are* quite educated -- yet a portion of the educated ones (some of whom who've traveled a fair amount abroad)whom one might reasonably expect to transcend such a narrow view do not. They blame the "damned foreigners."

I'm not criticizing, just mentioning a point that you didn't. Perhaps you were being TOO polite by glossing over that fact!

May I invite Mr./Ms.Niibrocvet to read a story in Newsweek under the caption A TEAM OF EXPATRIATES by Jeffrey Bartholet and Daniel Stone published in the issue of January 17,2009. The impression of people mentioned there shows why many people in other countries looked unfriendly to Mr./Ms.Nibrocvet?

  • Posted By: khasroo29 @ 01/28/2009 5:13:16 AM

Mr./Ms Nibrocvet I am afraid is most probably wrong in his assesment. The people in general worldover love Americans.I am sure Mr./Ms.Nibrocvet must have come accross friendly people during his visits abroad. As common people are like doves they get worried when a hawk gets in the flock. I am previleged to visit inner american many times and I found them as friendly as people elsewhere.

I was overseas in many foreign countries from 1955 until 1959 and the world disliked american then with a whole lot of anger. i experienced this first hand no one has to tell me that the world dislikes us more because of george bush than before. These countries will take all of our foreign aid and stab us in the back, or most likely cut off our heads. one think for sure they wiill have to come to america to get me as i will never travel to a foreign country. mexico and canada included...

The idea that the US needs to "improve our image" abroad is ludicrous. All nations have their own agendas, and altering our agenda to placate foreign sentiment smacks of appeasement.

    • Posted By: YashBudini @ 01/07/2009 11:30:29 AM

      But imperialism sucks as well.

      • Posted By: libertyfirst @ 01/15/2009 3:17:08 PM

Then so be it; else someone like Russia or China will gladly assume our position. The world demands our involvement, time and time again...then spits on us when it doesn't "go their way" -- which by definition is nearly always the case. It's no-win for the US no matter; so, may as well go according to our own drum,.

As the US paper dollar cites <in God we trust> would be a good principle to follow as the militaristic domination of US world policy has botched up almost any attempt in the past decade to acheive world-wide respect for US foreign policy.Any government must strictly hold in check their defense ministry both for political AND economical pursuits, but especially in the US today.  Since President Eisenhower who even as a US Army General found it difficult to swim in the rocky waters of US Foreign Policy during the British overtake of Iranian oiil resources, 3 decades  and 2 republican administrations later, Obhama will find himself neck deep with this chore of resizing and retaining US Foreign Policy's 'spoiled military bullies' to acheive new habits in all our foreign dealings. So I repeat 'IN GOD WE TRUST' should be on the lips of every law abiding and decent American citizen for it is only through His help -and lots of it - that we may some day become the nation that every American wants to hand down to his decendents. Thank God, Bush's reign is OVER! "King" George has been the biggerst embarrassment this country has ever seen!
Not having to listen to his marginal I.Q "rants" any longer, is a blessing. Because of "W," our standing in the eyes of the rest of the world, has fallen to a new low. We can only hope that Obama has what it takes, to restore our place in the world.

  • Posted By: CURIOUSCHRIS @ 01/14/2009 11:03:18 PM

I WANT TO KNOW WHY THERE ARE CONCENTRATION CAMPS IN THE UNITED STATES. I ALSO WANT TO KNOW IF OBAMA WANTS TO HAVE A NEW WORLD ORDER

  • Posted By: elcindo @ 01/04/2009 4:03:43 AM

Why has America's image deteriorated so much? Because the U.S. has not been true to the principles that it supposedly holds dear: truth, justice, and fairness.

Where was the truth when the Bush administration made its case for going to war in Iraq on the basis of a fairy tale stories of weapons of mass destruction?

Where was justice when American soldiers tortured Iraqis in their own country? The world saw the images of Abu Ghraib and wondered whether to believe the U.S. when it speaks against torture.

Where is fairness when the world sees so many instances of double standards in U.S. foreign policy? The U.S. makes such loud noises about Iran trying to develop nuclear weapons but keeps quiet while Israel builds up its nuclear arsenal.

The U.S. can help fix its image by being evenhanded and pragmatic in its support for its friends, Israel being one.

Newsweek can also help fix U.S. image by remaining loyal to the journalistic principles of truthful, balanced, and unbiased reporting.

So, it is not that the world dislikes the U.S. or is against the U.S. The world is disappointed that the U.S. doesn???t walk its own talk of truth, fairness, and justice.

I am currently a 18 year old US citizen and the funny thing is elcindo, is that most of my generation completely and utterly agrees with every word you say. At least all of my friends at my university do. We're trying to change, the most powerful thing our generation could think of, the best way to begin the long and laborious road to fixing our foreign policy and global image was to elect Obama. I know he is not the miracle fix, but its a start and I, for one, as a US citizen hope that you and all the rest of the world will be able to forgive us when the time is right.

The idea that the US needs to curry favor with Europeans (or others)who disapprove of our policies or are jealous of our prosperity smacks of appeasement.

Also, perhaps we should pull our troops out of Afghanistan...after all, 911 didn't happen to us, right?

  • Posted By: arthur63 @ 01/05/2009 9:41:17 AM

You know, so much of the time we're just lost. We say, "Please, God, tell us what is right; tell us what is true." And there is no justice: the rich win, the poor are powerless. We become tired of hearing people lie. And after a time, we become dead... a little dead. We think of ourselves as victims... and we become victims. We become... we become weak. We doubt ourselves, we doubt our beliefs. We doubt our institutions.
When George Soros can drop hundreds of millions of dollars to effect the outcome of an election, When the Media who we count on to give us a unbiased report of what is going on shows a clear bias and articulates lies. When they fail to recognize anything that the George Bush's administration did excel at like protecting us from Islamic Extremist. When they slam Sarah Palin as a candidate for public office but in the same breath give Caroline Kennedy a pass to accept a senate seat. When they look to take religion and make it a bigoted institution, by promoting issues and adgendas counter to the teachings of the church or churches. When a sitting Washington State Governor allows for an attack on religious statue and turns a blind eye to the people it offends. When a war the freed millions of Iraqi's from Tyrant who perpratrated mass miurder on its population as an illegal action. Whether or not there were weapons of Mass Destruction I put forth to you, how many Iraqi lives must be given up to declare Saddam Hussein a Mass Murderer? In my religion, they say, "Act as if ye had faith... and faith will be given to you." IF... if we are to have faith in justice, we need only to believe in ourselves. And ACT with justice. See, I believe there is justice in our hearts, I call on Americans to come together and give up the Vitriol of Blaming George W Bush, this is a man who did his best, he was working to safeguard Americans and their freedoms, way of life for their children. I believe the United States is tired of hearing lies apon lies heaped apon him. I believe these people think if you say enough times it would become the truth, not in this persons mind nor the mind of millions of Americans.

If Europe does not respect us, than it is their loss, let them protect themselves when the next time they feel threatened or need our help, and trust me that time will come. I pray that Barrrak Obama can do a great job, I am not actively rooting that everything he does or is attached to is criminal, even though he has gotten off to a rough start!!!

    • Posted By: Jose52 @ 01/06/2009 11:53:53 AM

Agree. This policy wonk has a euro-centric opinion on the US image problem. Pleeee..ase. When the worldly wonks counsel our fears, then we lose. The only thing the world fears is a strong America. Our own MSM has biasly complained about all our successes. The MSM pulled Obama across the finish line and now the MSM will say everthing is OBama OK. The MSM forgets about Chris dodd and barney franks FM/Fred Mac debacle.

I will prepare and keep my powder dry. Support Israel!

Also another way to improve the image of the United States is to accept that America is a continent, not a country, so stop calling your country America, that's why many latin americans hate the "gringos". I'm from ecuador so I'm also American...

  • Posted By: xuxa @ 12/31/2008 11:35:30 PM

The author of this story has somewhat the same problem that the Bush Administration has-- inability to tell the difference between image and substance. The US doesn't have an image problem; it has a substance problem. Part of the historical summary in this article is simplistic and inaccurate. For a better, but excoriating, look at our foreign policy over the years, the reader should watch the acceptance speech of British playwright Harold Pinter when he won the Nobel Prize a couple of years ago. He tells it like it is and was, and shows that the US does indeed have a very coherent strategy--all it wants to do is control the world, and toward that end has over 700 military bases around the world.

The measure of the strategy's success is that apparently no other country, or coalition of countries, has been able to do anything about this new imperialism. Perhaps with a new administration things will change. A majority of Americans certainly hope so.

    • Posted By: Jose52 @ 01/06/2009 12:19:26 PM

And your point is? ....Substance sometimes depends on the viewers perspective. When countries or individuals try to please everyone (every country), they end up pleasing no one. Global perspective is always eurocentric and bound by each one biases and opinion. I spent 8 years overseas and could care less of anyone's opinion (even the american MSM). I will follow Teddy Roosevelt's rule of Talk softly and carry a BIG stick.

Jesus Christ was a communist. Read Matthew 5 and get back to me. In fact, the entire Christian community started out as a communist society.

        I know the Sciptures.

Read Acts. Read about the deaths of Annias and Sapphira. Christians WERE Communist.

:"All the believers were one in heart and mind. NO ONE CLAIMED THAT ANY OF HIS POSSESSIONS WAS HIS OWN, BUT THEY SHARED EVERYTHING THEY HAD."- Acts 4:32

        That is COMMUNISM, my friend.

      • Posted By: acuview @ 12/31/2008 2:45:03 PM

Actually, libertyman, rousch15 is right... some of the early Christians were some early form of communist, in the sense that they lived communally and shared their wealth.

The problem isn't necessarily communism, the problem is that communism on a large scale seems to fail and produce something much worse on average than democracy. So it's sort of a pragmatism vs. idealism debate. Democracy seems to work relatively well on a large scale, whereas communism and more specifically central planning do not.

That's why the comparison to early Christians is interesting, but also sort of irrelevant. We have yet to find a way to scale up communal life to any kind of large scale while preserving some semblance of fairness and efficiency, but in truth, nearly every one of us has lived a communal life (like the early Christians did) -- as children in our own families.

        • Posted By: YashBudini @ 12/31/2008 5:02:05 PM

Also - there are no true communist countries. None made it passed socialism, and frankly Russia and China are more like small group dictatorships, whatever they may be called. They all fail because of greed. Sound familiar?

    Greetings,
I think today's Americas is more about corporate greed. I study and live in US for about seven years. However, I see a total denial of what I learn from its' institutions and its scoiety in general and in specific by US Government in the last two hundred years or so. I think Amercians must accept the fact that they are directly and indirectly responsible for their government. Moreover, US is encourage by it allies becuase naturally they have thier interest palyed in too. US is a repeat offender as there is enopugh evidence on US going to wars on avergae every ten years or so. Broken promises and whatever it takes deception to reach its goals is the name of the game for Americans starting from poor red Indians to devided muslims. I think the author has suggested a utopia. To simply put, it is about imbalance of power.

  • Posted By: Amina Hassan @ 01/04/2009 5:30:09 AM

I agree with elcindo. i would like to add that, respect is something America needs to apply in its foreign policy. The right to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness?, they are not , and shouldn't be just for americans, but for everyone. If these rights are attacked in thw muslim world, than muslims all over the world will fail to sympathize with america.

  • Posted By: Elowynd @ 01/02/2009 6:58:45 PM

Seems to me that America's problems come from to much multilateralism, not the opposite. With Obama's election the U.S. has now tried every pathetic gimmick that can be thought of to get other countries to love it. Maybe America's reall problem is not realizing that most nations would give anything for the wealth and power America has. And that nothing, not even destroying that wealth and power, will make other nations love America. Just look at the reaction to a minor economic problem. Maybe Americans need to realize that nationalism is common and if more people are against America it is because A) More people know that America actually exists than say Turks and Caicos and B) Because when people burn American flags Americans don't respond by doing the same. However, I think Americans have indeed been affected by the years of Anti-Americanism. I think the question that will soon be on every penny pundit's lips will not be "Why do they hate America?" but "Why does America hate them? The United States is not a nation of saints and it seems to be inevitable that all the Anti-americanism that has been tossed at the United States will be tossed back into the world, for better or for worse. Soon your kids from Singapore might find that studying in the U.S. will get them lynched. Actions often cause a reaction. Think of all the Anti-Americanism there has been in the world and then think of what an American backlash to that might look like. I don't think America's reputation is what people should be worried about.
