Total typical mainstream media BS. My personal view is, I don't give a $%@! what any other country thinks about us. I rather like it when other countries, especially those who sponsor terror, don't know what to expect from our president. It keep us safe.

Does anyone doubt that among terrorist organizations there weren't conversations along the lines of, "Let's not attack the Americans while GWB is still in office. His reprisals will be fierce and swift. Let's wait until the new, weaker president is in office to attack. He won't have the stomach for reprisals."? You bet.

This article is but one more example of a marginally talented writer, along with the backing of his editor and publisher, reaching, stretching to hang the world's woes on GWB. Another vain attempt to foster the illusion that America and her perceived ignorance toward the rest of the world is the root cause of all problems. Does anyone REALLY think that as Pierre enters the voting booth in Paris, he pauses to consider how WE will feel about his vote and who is elected to lead France?!?! Not a chance!

I just wonder who this writer voted for? You sure can't tell by his writing! To think the bozos at Newsweek actually think they are fooling anyone.

My observations are that Uh-bama voters generally fall into three groups; uninformed, misguided or witless. Which group is this writer in?

Be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it.

Did it ever occur to you that Al Qaeda didn't need to make another attack on the USA to maximize the damage caused by 9/11? The assumption that this was their actual plan or ambition is simply blind speculation. Let me explain one angle:

What need was there for them to attack us again? We have a done a good enough job on our own, waiting for an attack that was never to come. Hence, if you take one step toward saying they're not just a bunch of ignorant towel-heads, but rather, men capable of making strategic decisions, perhaps this was their plan all along; in essence, allowing us to damage ourselves, which we have done in ways that far exceed the damage done by 9/11. Every liberty impeded upon, removed, shredded by Bush and others in the name of freedom has been a blow delivered to us by Al Qaeda, using Bush as the instrument of delivery. War is funny like that. Sort of like how Gen. Custer got suckered into the Little Big Horn through arrogance, belligerence, and a total lack of respect for his enemies.

Had Gen. Patton made the same mistake with Gen. Rommel in WW2, the world we now live in would be a greatly different place. Patton had to stop Rommel, but he also respected his talents and abilities as a field general. Had he disrespected, mocked, humiliated, and basically underestimated him, we would have lost badly to Rommel. Examine what's behind Freedom Fries and perhaps you will catch my meaning...

While we have been off chasing windmills in the sand, realize US healthcare is now the most expensive in the world, yet, our quality of medical care delivery has fallen to 37th in the world. It's the same with education. Most expensive, least effective of the 1st world nations (30th is the line between developed and developing nations). This on its face is appalling. In essence, we pay the most and receive the least. I have buyer???s remorse, why don???t you?

Examine any infrastructure. Roads, telecommunications, power, light, water, sewer. We are rapidly falling behind the developed world as we live on our glorious past, instead of rolling up our sleeves and doing what it takes. We have become a nation of paper shufflers, no longer one that highly values building roads, bridges, scientific advances, and new breakthrough technologies. We more prefer barriers to entry, than bridges to discovery, given our collectively dim view on math and science, and loud proclamation of the greatness of the things built by our parents and grandparents.

I do disagree with the author of this article; however, as it???s not our priorities that need to be examined and changed, it???s our current values that are leading us downward. We pay tramps and scoundrels on the silver screen and in ballparks millions, and b#tch about paying a fair wage to laborers. Until this changes, we are lost. Diverting resources into fewer and fewer hands, simply leads to a ruined economy and nation.

That's correct, now they don't need money or planning. Chatter alone is causing economic destruction. W has been playing right into their hands from day one. And the sheeple call that leadership.

Chubsoda, get your head out of your @$$ while you still can. Ask your so intelligent Eurotrash friends if they bother to consider what we think about their vote or who their leader is. They don't. So why should we? A Euro-centric world view such as yours, Chubby, will only lead to the US becoming a second class country, much like he EU is today. Is the US perfect? Not by a long shot. But we still do more good in the world than ANY other nation. Need it be said that without US leadership, all these European nations would be speaking German today as their national language.

The sad fact is, other countries hate the US. They are jealous of our economic prosperity. They are envious of our technology. They are resentful of our innovation. These other countries will never love the US. There is NOTHING we can do that will change their opinion of us, so why try? What is the point?

Chubby, you just don't get it. So, you're probably perfectly suited to a career at the Dept. of State. It is you, Chubby, who are the embarrassment. It is you who would sell out your country. How proud you must be, CHubby.

W has already sent us on the path to becoming a 3rd world country. Your feeble attempts here can't even hold a candle to that.

It's so tiresome responding to people like you, Yashbutt, who just don't get it. Instead of trying to burn down the U.S., try standing up for her. That is, if the U.S. actually IS your country. I'm sure there's a place somewhere in the world where you can live the life you choose - under the chains of tyranny, and be nothing more than a puppet of the state. But that's not what America is about. That's not what the founding fathers had in mind. Try reading a book on the subject, Yashbutt. It'll do you some good. You CAN read, can't you?

"Yashbutt, who just don't get it."

This must be where you use facts to bolster your argument. Lots of facts here right? Chilidish name calling is all I see.

What a simpleton way of life - to believe that identifying real problems and trying to get them fixed is labeled "tearing down". But that's the very essence of the conservatism, and especially of the nationalistic blind followers. You are entrenched in your ways, and you don't have the ability to admit that the emperor is not wearing any clothes. This is a particularly frustrating viewpoint to be stuck with, and the reason you are in fact stuck with it is that the male macho thing doesn't allow its victims to admit when they are wrong, even and especially when they know they are wrong. What do they resort to? Well chilidsh name calling is the obvious pick.

The best thing about you and your kind is that you're your own worst enemy. Nobody around you will do as much damage as you do to yourself.

And your self bound to boot. Who could ask for more?

I'm of the frame of mind, that the HOLY OBONZO will go back to kissing @$$ and asking other sh1th3ads for permission to protect the American people. Yeah - that will go a long way to helping the American image. Most of those countries who hate us, will continue to hate us because of the fundamental differences in our societies, our beliefs, and our ideals. Our country is great because of many reasons, and many people hate us out of jealousy. Bush has always derided and looked down at the UN because of its corruption, and uselessness. Now that the HOLY OBONZO will go back to groveling and begging for permission to defend ourselves, like Oliver asking for more food, our image will go way up! Bush NEVER asked for anyones "permission" to kill our enemies.

I AM A CHRISTIAN/REPUBLICAN/TEACHER. I voted for the the other party for the 1st time because I had ideas agreeing with the thesis of this paper. Is the peace agreemant ( we pay Isreal@& Egypt a few million every rear not to fight) still in effect? It has worked rather well, thanks to Jimmy Carter (didn't vote for him) . That was some of his best work. Maybe we can renew the time limit on this, and expand it to other problem areas. It is far less costly than a milatary solution. The root of our PR problem is our foreign policies regarding Isreal. People are very nationalistic and teratorial with different mores in this region of the world.. .

If you truly believe in Christian ideals then you need to adhere to Thou Shall Not Steal. Neighbors around your school system who have no kids are forced to pay for your salary, as are homeschool families. Until you accept a paycheck based SOLELY on the taxes paid by families who send their kids into your Godless institution, you are a hypocrite and care more about a paycheck than doing what is right.

Go to public hospitals? Depend on Fire and EMS services in an emergency? Call the police if you see something suspicious? All tax-funded activities.

The way to regain America's FULL GLOBAL RESPECT is to show strength again, lead the world again, boot the U.N. off its shores, destroy Iran with nuclear technology instead of a protracted war, aid Israel in the immediate destruction of Hamas, cease all aid to the Palestinians, build major US-owned and staffed military bases in Iraq and in the Persian Gulf, begin drilling in Alaska and off-shore where the American greenies have blocked before, close the porous borders, end all welfare in 30 days, eliminate all corporate welfare, eliminate all religious faith-based initiatives welfare, eliminate all social welfare, return all domestic weapons-related gun laws to their far safer 1910 status, stop all farm subsidies, reduce the income tax to 9% universal for all brackets without exception or breaks of any kind. eliminate all other taxes in existence, eliminate the EPA, eliminate the Energy Department, separate the F from the FDA to allow for proper checks and balances instead of letting them create their own customers, cut all ties to the Federal Reserve, eliminate all regulatory agencies, cease all outdated Indian assistance programs (which means all of them), erase all hate-crimes laws from the books (murder and battery are equally bad no matter who is being attacked, stop pandering to and giving false pity to minorities), and institute a true death penalty for convicted murderers and rapists and kidnappers and arsonists (to reduce those crimes by factors of hundreds of percentage points).

I think the world is going to have to realize that the US can't be EXPECTED to donate food and money everytime their country needs something. They are also going to have to realize that we are not the dumping ground for their hatred. They don't seem to mind asking for a handout but very seldom do we receive a "thank you". There have been many times when the US has been hit hard by hurricanes, floods, tornados and whatever. Where's are help? You know it would be nice for some other country to actually volunteer and not wait to be asked. We volunteer and then never receive a thank you. Everyone complains about us, but the loudest complainers are first in line for any handout they think they deserve. If we are such a BAD country, why are there so many illegal immigrants risking their lives sometimes to live here. I don't see anyone dying to go to the complainers countries. No, the complainers are the ones running here and then griping because it's not like "home". If it was just like "home" they wouldn't have come here in the first place. Boston Irish

I like the idea of this article. I'm not one for the ideal stereotyping of Uncle Sam. Yes, we do need new habits of cooperation, but I agree with Burlap; we must think several moves ahead. the US isn't merely trying to fist other countries out of their oil, or wealth, etc. I honestly think that when we go out of our way to help other people, we do it for the right reasons. sure, we're in Iraq and most people think it's just to sit on the oil, but think of the good that we have slowly established. There will never be a democracy over there, but there is need for EVERYONE to have equal rights. On these comments, I'm seeing alot of "EVERYONE HATES AMERICA; WE'RE GREEDY BASTARDS BECAUSE WE'RE SO MUCH BETTER" I don't think that's the case. It's like the whole "one bad apple spoils the whole bunch" bit. Not EVERYONE hates the US of A, but the ones who do are vocal about it. I agree though...BHO needs to help this countries image badly, otherwise we're screwed.
    Just my thoughts...

Just like Christianity, Islam has earned its horrible reputation.

In fact, the two faiths are so similiar in their respective views of the world that it's surprising that they are not allies.

Both are bent on world domination.
    Both condone slavery.
    Both hate women and children.
Both support violence (read the lyrics of MANY Christian hymns like "Onward Christian Soldiers")
    Both destablize the world.
Both need to be dealt with.

    • Posted By: nectar28 @ 12/31/2008 2:43:13 PM

Weird that you would say that both these religions hate women and children. I can see the women part, but not the children part. And actually, they don't "hate" women, but believe that women have their duties and men have their own as well.

The comments here are frightening but not surprising.

There are so many belligerent, ignorant Americans it makes my hair stand on end. I feel sorry for the thoughtful Americans having to deal with this constantly.

I agree with the article - the US does not have an image problem, it has a policy problem. The policies are based on ignorance, laziness, self-righteousness and often racism against darker peoples.

The American attitude towards the Palestinians makes me weep. The only right the Palestinians seem to have and to have ever had is the right to do as their told, without resistance, to move aside, go away, accommodate others, lose their homeland and everything they have for the benefit of others. And then they are called terrorists. They are truly the wretched of the earth.

hmmm... do you actually know the history of palestine? i note that you refer to the british colony of palestine - do you feel that the palestinians should just have done as the british wanted without resisting? please see my comment above.

should they have just moved to the areas someone else designated for them, leaving their towns and villages? Why? Should any other people be required to do the same, without resistance.

Are you aware of how the Israeli's "achieved" their country ie. violence and ethnic? As the voices of palestinians are considered totally invalid by americans, indeed "terrorist" voices, I would refer you only to the histories written by israelis, such as Benny Morris, which in fact admit all this.

Perhaps if you only read american sources you are indeed unaware of this history and of the ongoing violence, oppression, land stealing etc that is going on.

i do not think we can have a peaceful world if we make policies based on the bible or any other religious text.

we must respect all peoples, their human rights, their history on the land. we must seek fairness and justice in all respects and think carefully and thoughtfully about what we're doing to each other.

i agree totally that you reap what you sow. the current israelis came to the land with an attitude of entitlement, racism and arrogance. they have never accepted the existence of the people who already lived on the land.

if you read the history of the period you will know about the violent tactics they used to clear the land. except for the horrific suicide bombings, i think the palestinians have been very restrained in their response. Americans would never have accept this type of fate without a much larger and angrier response. but the palestinians were basically a mostly poor agricultural society without the ability to mobilize a response.

i don't know why more people are not conversant with the history. it seems everything comes from one point of view. someone said to me once "if you want to overcome your anger, listen to the other person's point of view." i think that's very true.

Religious "freedom" will be the cause of our downfall.
Someone needs to silence the spiritually insane in my land. We don't need religion. We don't need God. All we need is the freedom to pursue happiness, as T.J. wrote so eloquently.

    • Posted By: lensta1971 @ 12/31/2008 2:11:56 PM

Religion is not the problem. Not respecting beliefs other than your own and acting upon it with brutal force causes problems. Most religions/beliefs share a common theme. In physics, energy is not lost; it is transformed. Every spring, crops are reborn - Jesus was born again. Feng shui and chi touch on this. God surrounds us and lifts our spirits. To say one is right and the others are wrong, is wrong. I believe we should stop competing with one another on who's views are right and who's are wrong and find solutions to the problems we face as a species. After all, the only reason any species procreates is to maintain the future of itself. We should be focusing on our future and the environment that will support our species, most specifically, our planet.

Funny how they forget the Commandment regarding not bearing FALSE WITNESS!

Would Jesus like that line of thinking?
