I wish America would get their heads out of the sand. We are a democracy, russia and the rest are communist. Who are we to say they can't be communist when they don't interfere with our democracy way of life. Also, we have nuclear weapons, who are we to tell the rest of the world that they shouldn't have nuclear weapons. If America were to go into a war with, lets say with Iran, would it be better to destroy them with our nuclear weapons and let them use tnt to cause damage? The other countries are trying to survive jus like we america is trying to survive. And all this Muslim and Islam talk should just be left alone. Religion has always and will always be the reason for war. U can't sell Jesus to Mohammed because Mohammed don't believe in Nike, and Gucci and those kinda stuff. Mohammed believes in Sari's and head turbines. Just deal with it.

That last line just killed me daxybaby...!

Sari's are worn by HINDU women...get it? HINDU...quite a different religion from Islam (which is in fact related to Christianity, being an Abrahamic religion). And Mohammed hates Hinduisim more than he does Christianity..

Sheesh...what in the world do you Americans learn at school?

What a schizophrenic op-ed piece! This mind-numbing stance that the US must "heal its image" is dragged out every year at this time; calling for US policy to walk the line between engagement and meddling, support versus propping-up; and self-interest versus global interest. The entire premise to this UN-vision of the world is faulty -- that is, that public polling of our "image" translates into economic and political decisions that mean something -- they do not. Trade continues regardless of our image and wars wage despite public sentiment. All countries -- not simply the US -- behave in their perceived self-interest; and all countries have "image problems" relative to who is asked the question. Mahbubami's naivete' regarding "viewing the world as a single geopolitical chessboard" is stunningly ignorant of history. The US has been actively engaged in the Israel-Palestine conflict for over 40 years, having tried every imaginable strategy in vain -- the conflict and bitter dispute continues. We've been actively, secretively, and openly engaged with nearly every country in the world since WW11, supportive to the tunes of countless billions in aid spent, and diplomatic to the tune of countless UN cocktail parties, countless special envoys, and countless summit meetings. The world is still a mess, still a place where all countries seek their own interests, their own advantage, and their own way -- with or without the NYTimes and liberal think tank approval. No, its only the dastardly US that needs to fix its image. Please. Perhaps the best strategy for the US in the future is to stop wringing its hands and stop worrying so damn much about "what the world thinks of us" -- it doesn't really care. It just wants our dollars, our markets, and an occasional trip to Disneyland.

auden24....Here's an idea, why don't "the darker peoples" of the world, your words not mine, do something to combat terrorism. Why don't good Muslims around the world and there are millions of them, step up and join the fight against terrorism. Why don't countries like Palestine stop letting terrorists groups like Hamas do their dirty work. Some people would like to think America "acts" like terrorists when we defend ourselves against these groups, but last time I checked we are not sending soldiers onto buses packed with innocent women and children and killing them to get our point across. You want America to stop getting involved in other countries politics, then start policing terrorists yourself or help!!

    • Posted By: auden24 @ 12/31/2008 12:02:59 PM

i would like to pose a question to you in response.

while i obviously don't support blowing people up on buses etc. i would like you to outline for me what actions the palestinians can legitimately take, in your view, to resist occupation at this time. It seems that even shelling soldiers and military sites is called terrorism by people who seem to share your viewpoint.

I'd also like to ask you what the Palestinians could legitimately have done in the earlier part of the century to resist the carving up of their land by the British? Did they have any right whatsoever to resist the mass immigration of another people to take over their homeland? And if you believe they should have submitted, could you please give me an example of another people in some other place who should merely submit to the same?

Do you think you have a right to resist in similar circumstances? Or should you just go and live in a country that someone else deems "similar"?

Here in the city where I live, the parking enforcement people get assaulted on a somewhat regular basis by irate drivers who feel they've been treated unfairly. I think this is common in the "civilized" world, which then preaches to the Palestinians, who have been hounded, harassed and stolen from for almost a century now. Give me a break!

You are full of yourself. Great article but says nothing different that the U.S. has been doing for over 100 years. Prioritizing. All words and no substance, usual for a writer. Give solutions. I have traveled to and done business in all of the regions you mentioned. Its the Religion, Stupid. And the day you acknowledge that and support that the sooner this will be resolved. Jews do not like Catholics, Muslims do not like Jews, So where does it stop?? By admitting it. I will share a story with you about an encounter while in Paris, yes Paris. Met a man identified himself as an American but living working in Paris. Stated he left US because of GW. I discussed and debated him on issues. My conversation line persisted that when GW left office had he plans to return to US. Yes. My last conversation with this person in Paris Just before Christmas was he still hated GW & GHB and most likely would not return to US until US stopped supporting Israel, ( the real reason) this man & his wife has converted to a stronger Muslim following and outward hatred of Israel that because of my Catholic beliefs, and open support for Israel, he no longer wishes for me to visit him in Paris and not contact him by e-mail. That my fellow 'American' is the truth as is the belief of all his friends that I had met, while there. It's the religion and nothing else.

Common citizens I encountered in France, Spain, Germany, Polan, Serbia, and my fathers homeland Italy Love America and truly enjoy our support of their country, waiting for the opportunity to sit and talk'in English' about the world and the US.

I grant the world this quote" If its free its for me" but open an opportunity for freedon amd wealth, they take it every time. No I do not believe anyone that the rest of the world dislikes America, they 'Envy' Americans and our way of life, so start being a bit more truthfull. I have much more to say, but for now, Happy US New Year. go SC tolac7@msn.com

Our image to other countries is clouded by the bull crap that comes out of the mouth of their leaders. I am sick of the media insisting that everything is our fault. From what I see we jsut want to stop the extreme religiuos groups from threatening and carrying out attacks on us. Many of the countries that hate us we continue to support financially because we have actually care about their people more than their own government.

Grumpy Gramps needs to wake up and realize the fact that it's obvious to me that the vast majority of the dumbest people vote Democrat. Have you visited any projects in the big cities across this country...they are all filled with your Democrat base voters. Are you too stupid to realize that 99% of all people on welfare programs vote Democrat so they can get more hand- outs from the providers in this country - (also known as Republicans). If you didn't have Republicans to support you lazy ass Democrats, this country would have collapsed by now, or you Democrat slugs sitting in the wagon would have to actually get a job. Conservatives are sick of oaying huge taxes, without thanks from the leaches, and then getting treated like crap. Excuse me, but I have to get back to my job...I don't have time to post comments all day like all the free-loading Democrats in this country!!

"If you didn't have Republicans to support you lazy ass Democrats, this country would have collapsed by now"

Then why is it that the Blue states receive less tax money back from your federal governments than they put in, and the Red states receive more than they put in? Oh, yes...because the Red states are full of the republican base...ignorant religious whackjob rednecks living on the dole.

      • Posted By: bradmann15 @ 12/31/2008 9:21:51 AM

Do you have a brain? Republicans work and pay taxes or run businesses that pay taxes...the Democrat base sits on their asses and waits for their check to arrive so they can survive because they have no interest in working. Whenever there is a shortage of paying into versus taking out of the federal government, it certainly isn't caused by Republicans. It would be for various reasons like military bases, and other government agencies, as well as payments to the lazy Democrats in those states. Just because a state is red, doesn't mean there aren't any lazy Democrats sitting in them.

I also bet that I am more educated than you and your entire inbred family put together. I voted democrat this year because of the "joke" of a president that sat in the White House the last 8 years. He single-handedly ruined everything that America stood for. You right-wing folks spout how free America is . . . last time I heard wire-tapping phones is not gaining freedom, but taking it away. I believe in an America that is fair and just and ONLY uses power when necessary. Please explain to me and all the other people who have posted how invading Iraq was justified? I am still puzzled by that. All I see is that we have politically destabilized the entire region, bankrupting America in the process. I pray that Obama focuses on America FIRST, pulls us out of the Middle East entirely, and shows the world some semblence of intelligence and compassion.

Except Horrible Bastard, that those living "on the dole" as you put it vote Dem. And since you clearly can't figure out how our politicol system works, states change colors at the drop of a hate. Hell, New York takes more money from the federal government than they put in. As does California. Seems to me, they went Dem. Get your facts straight or move back to whatever country it is you're from.

The biggest problem with Americans is that they only intermingle with Americans. Unlike Europe and a great deal of the globe, we do not have any other countries and cultures that we must individually deal with on a regular basis. We like to believe that we are ???Multi-cultural??? (whatever that is). We do, however, resent anyone that does not speak our English language to our standards, low as they are. Most of us do not make an effort to even learn another language, let alone culture. If the majority of Americans had the opportunity to travel more and see first hand that there are a great deal of different cultures, languages, religions, etc., our perceptions would change. We must stop looking down at the rest of the world. This will increase, not decrease our influence.

Hey Grumpy, let me ask you a simple question that even a liberal could understand. Who do Inner-City welfare recipients living in the projects vote for? What is their IQ? What is their rate of graduation? Also, if your statement that the Dixie States take in more money than they provide is true, it's not because of the Republicans because we have jobs...it's because of all those Democrats that are sitting on their asses taking from us providers. How can you blame a worker for that? If you would quit driinking the liberal media Kool-aid and think with your own brain - (if that's possible) - you'll understand. It's not that difficult, but use some common sense and it becomes quite obvious which party provides and which party takes in this country.

The truth hurts, doesn't it. When you have no answer for facts, you cry racism. It's fact, learn it or dig your head in the sand...your choice. Let's give the right to vote only to people that pay taxes and the Democrat party would go away tomorrow. You depend on leaches to vote your candidates in, then your candidates give more of my tax dollars back to the leaches in return for their vote...what a concept!!

Yes, I have a job, but I'm pissed off about all the ignorance in this article and the posts that I'm seeing. Don't they have schools where you live to teach you basic facts?

Just so you know, I'm going to support Obama because he's my president for at least 4 years, so it only hurts our country if we tear him down like liberals did to Bush for 8 years.

You truly are a dumb ass and a Horrible Bastard. You earned your name. I don't know what country you're from, but just because a state votes one way, doesn't mean that 100% of their people are from one party. No matter what state you're talking about, the welfare leaches vote Democrat, and that includes all of the southwest states like Kentucky and Tennessee. I never brought up race, you did...and there are more white leaches than black leaches in this country because of the total number of whites...but blacks are far more likely on a percentage basis to be on welfare and vote Democrat. If you're too stupid to understand this, then your country does not have an education system...or you are an extremist left wing liberal radical...which is just as ignorant of facts.

Like others I am sick and tired of reading that America is a horrible country and we need to change our image. Last time I looked we were the ones handing millions upon billions of dollars to these third world countries and they turn around and spout hatred toward us. I say, like others, cut the gravy train off. Let these parasites die in their filth and realize that we are what is helping their situation. I am also sick and tired of hearing religious tolerance. I have taught my children to be respectful and nice to all children regardless of race or religion. The week before Christmas a girl in my daughter's daycare told her that if she believed in Santa Claus that she was going to Hell. This little girl's family is from another country and is being raised here. How nice that her parents, who enjoy the freedoms of this country, teach their child such hatred for other beliefs. I think that we have tried for too long to be PC about everything and we should get back to basics. If you don't like America or our ideals, get the F out of my country! I love this great country. We speak English as our national language, LEARN IT! We are a democratic country where WOMAN AND CHILDREN have rights, don't bring your child slaves from other countries here. You have a right to your opinion, shout it from the rooftops if you like, but don't get angry with me because I don't agree with you. Tolerance runs both ways!!!! We would have to follow the rules of other countries and learn their language, if we lived there, so do the same HERE!!! or leave.

Okay, so when the U.S. is constantly asked to "do something", i.e., come in and clean up everyone else's messes, where are are so-called allies with support and aid? AWOL, that's where. When NATO forces deploy soldiers with instructions to NOT engage an enemy, whose soldiers end up doing the fighting and dying when the shooting starts? When did the world decide that the U.S. is the modern-day Sparta, to expend our blood and treasure for the salvation of people whio can't solve their own problems? WHERE IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE REST OF THE WORLD??? Their activities are limited and their "negotiatons" almost always fail. That's when they decide they need to call for American sacrifice. When the author accuses America of disengaging from the world, how can we be blamed for that (I don't believe that charge is true, anyway)? Nowhere in our constitution (or probably yours, either, though I can't be sure of that anymore) does it require Americans to be the peacekeepers of the world. George Washington warned the U.S. of becoming involved in "foreign entanglements" because he knew how easy it is to fall into the trap that Europe did, of constantly shifting alliances pitted against each other for the domination of Europe and elsewhere (colonialization). This, he knew, led to constant warfare, as history has shown. Poor image? Yes, indeed, because we can never do anything to anyone else's satisfaction. We are the world's "useful idiots" and we know it. If we have a poor image, it is because the rest of the world sees us through the eyes of our media outlets, which, although free to publish what they want, have chosen to report only bad news, or distortions, half-truths, and occasionally outright liies to suppport their political agenda, which is decidedly left-wing. Anyone who comes to America and spends some time, and who cares enough to pay attention and look around, will see that our reality is vastly different from their perception of it. We are sick and tired of foreign "pundits", educated critics who think that they have all the answers. Go ahead with your one-world global interconnected no-borders attitudes, some of us think that is the way of folly. It's fine for businesses in a free-market system, but for ordinary people it is disaster. Many people of the world see America as "something different", as a place to go to better their lives. We call it "voting with your feet". Don't believe it? Just look at our immigration data. If you try to remake America in your image (which is what I believe is going on here) and try to force your concept of what we should be on America, then one more beacon of hope in the world dies. To paraphrase my daughter, endowed as she is with that uniquely American independent streak,, "Don't tell me what to do".

Probably a lot of truth in the article, but again, it's from a foreign perspective, and most foreigners would prefer to knock the U S down a few pegs because they hate our foreign policies, under Clinton as well as Bush. They prefer a weak, ineffectual U S. It does, however, provide an opportunity for Obama since he's so highly regarded overseas, but we'll have to see if he makes any significant changes in foreign policy.

Would we be more inclined to appreciate the author's words if he was named John Smith, instead of a name that seems foreign to us?

If the author came from Nebraska, would his words be more acceptable?

Truth, regardless of the source, is usually uncomfortable to hear, but we would do well to look beyond the messenger to the message.

The truth is - not only do we have an image problem abroad, we have one at home - too many Americans have expressed disgust and outrage at our behavior, as well as a desire to see our image repaired.

This is a good thing - being able to identify the problem is the first step towards fixing it. As Dr. Phil would say - you have to name it to claim it.

Our image is fine in my eyes we were attacked and we defended ourselves. I am much more worried about our future image with the democrats in charge the united states will be much more prone to deseases brought in by illegals from every corner of the world. We will surely go back to being attacked with the democrats in charge. We will have one energy crisis after another with the no energy democrats in charge and yet another trillion dollars in debt with the never ending spending. The democats have weakend us to the point where russia is now more powerful then we are when will americans wake up and stop electing the worst possible choices.
