Why should we care what the rest of the world thinks!! Whenever there is a crisis anywhere in this world we are there to fix things and pick up the pieces!! How would the rest of the world like it if we just said the hell with you all, deal with it yourself!! But when we decide to do something i.e. Iraq, that is in our best interest from a security point, we are wrong in the eyes of everyone else!! No other country is willing to really step up and do anything so we will, AS USUAL!! If you don't like America and the way we handle things, then STAY OUT AND GET OUT IF YOU ARE ALREADY HERE!!!

"Whenever there is a crisis anywhere in this world we are there to fix things and pick up the pieces!! "

WWI, WWII, and Korea, and thank you very much. Other than that, your record of interventions is not exactly stellar.

    • Posted By: nia112001 @ 12/31/2008 10:57:41 AM

And by support i dont mean running in with your guns to sort things out!

"Whenever there is a crisis anywhere in this world we are there to fix things and pick up the pieces!!"
      That's an incredibily ignorant statement.

As for the other arrogant opinion "if you don't like it here" well simply put, identifying the problems with this country and trying to address them shows a far greater patriotic attitude than the one you posted. Your remark basically says accept this mess and too bad if it doesn't suit you. Sorry striving for something better is what intelligent people do. Once you're stagnant you're dead and useless.

Junkman - you are the type of person giving America a bad name - You dont own the world, let countries sort their own problems - America is seen as the mother-in-law who wont keep her nose out - I like Americans but the government need to take a step back - offer support if the country wants it but dont over do it.

  • Posted By: chibixholic @ 12/31/2008 10:57:52 AM

To Junkman, you and your comment reflects why the rest hates Amerian right now. Seriously, you SHOULD care about what the rest of the world thinks because America would be nothing without the rest of the world.

I???m worry about if Obama will invade the relation between USA and China like Collinton.

  • Posted By: melmacd @ 12/31/2008 10:40:05 AM

In President-elect Obama's book "Audacity of Hope," there's a chapter about the U.S.'s relationship with the rest of the world and how this country's approach needs to change. I think now we have the audacity to hope...

Get rid of Bush and Cheney will fix this country's problem immediately

Get rid of Bush-Cheney will correc t most of the world 's problem with this country

  • Posted By: lucatmiami @ 12/31/2008 3:57:05 AM

to stsmith, and all of the Bush apologists like you, think about THIS : we NEVER had a large scale domestic terrorist attack BEFORE 9/11 so stop using this nonsense statement that we should praise the pilot for only crashing once while he was asleep.....Again it never happened BEFORE.......so what is the big deal here ? we should worship this moron for having us bombed only once........get a grip ....

    • Posted By: stsmith1511 @ 12/31/2008 4:16:33 AM

lucatmiami, I'm not apoligizing for Bush, just stating a fact! Hell, he had only been in office for 8 months when 9/11 occurred. Do you really think that the Muslims started hating us when Bush took office? You need to get a grip on reality!

      • Posted By: ERIMER @ 12/31/2008 10:32:24 AM

It would have happend no matter WHO was in office. It's sort of hard to point the finger to anyone other than those who planned and carried it out..

    • Posted By: Horrible Bastard @ 12/31/2008 9:16:19 AM

      What about Oklahoma City?

  • Posted By: GinnyA52 @ 12/31/2008 4:15:15 AM

Why of course, his image is ruined thanks to the media bashing him to pieces for eight years, the same people that ruined that image will be the same ones doing the same to Obama, and also, don't expect any so-called change. That campaign promise just went down the tube after what Obama said about the Middle East crisis. The things candidates say to get elected. Haha!! Told Ya So!!!

    • Posted By: ERIMER @ 12/31/2008 10:29:43 AM

I think Bush also may have had a little to do with his ruined image..

  • Posted By: MarkShorter @ 12/31/2008 10:29:15 AM

For some reason the title alone caught me with an immediate reply: That our great country already has an image of freedom and true democracy that in action stands out as a stronger voice than any one writer or public speaker could ever do. We elect our government and hold them accountable in War and in Peace, in times of national threat, and in times of economic struggle. While this author is clearly bias in his perspective, I submit we all are in some way. The best way for the future of the United States of America to continue is to remain grounded in the same religious and personal freedoms that brought this country to power. In closing I would suggest we remember lessons from the past when we as a nation wanted to only be concerned with what happened inside our boaders and support the fights for freedom in every corner of the globe!

Promoting democracy IS a strategy, and the best one the world has found so far. It seems Mr. Mahbubani chooses to pretend that Fukuyama was never born. I've got to think that promoting his own book and his own publicity probably depends on a gullible public, and statements like this.

There has never been a war between two mature democracies. What more needs to be said? Singapore herself has realized a great deal of benefit from the strategy.

We should always scrutinize our behavior, and correct mistakes of the past, but the arguments of Mr. Mahbubani show little consistency, and surely no strategy at all, only tactical attempts to make every country happy, no matter the threat they pose to their neighbors, or to their own citizens.

"Yet the same administration has also improved America's relations with China and India"
Maybe because corporate America is bending over for them in every way. It's easy for then to love a whore when the legs are spread for them. The question is do the RESPECT the US? Doubtful,

    TK of Columbus:

Are you serious? You really have no clue at all, do you? I am an American currently living in Germany, the third largest economy in the world and currently the only economy in the world to have still have a surplus and can't help but think you must be completely ignorant of the state of the world today. Countries that have been fiscally conservative, such as Germany, could be a huge help in solving the global financial crisis, but currently don't want to invest their money in bailing out others as they don't trust countries that can't manage their own finances. France has the largest military in Europe and has nuclear weapons. To say countries like France and Germany are inconsequential is one of the more ignorant things I've ever heard.

Also, currently the greatest threat to our national security is global climate change (which leads to shortages of water and food and therefore increased world-wide conflict). As such, it is imperative to the safety of the USA to sign on to the Kyoto Protocol and reducing our emissions of greenhouse gases. I'm probably wasting my time with all this, but it sounds like you're in need of a serious education in global politics. It's attitudes like yours that have put a giant target on America.

    • Posted By: TK of Columbus @ 12/31/2008 4:49:49 AM

ephemeroptera-Germany hasn't stepped up to any world issues that they should have. Recheck you figures on 3rd largest economy. France, still not stepping up to their needs in the world. You need to really look around you and evaluate what is really going on in the world. As for golbal warming-you my friend have drank way to much of the koolaid. No- the problem is you and others that think like you, far left and like being in a heavy socialist form of government.

      • Posted By: ERIMER @ 12/31/2008 10:23:01 AM

        TK of Columbus,

YOU need to check your facts.

Germany has the leading economy in Europe,
With $M 2,809,693 it is the fifth by GDP (PPP) in the world
With $M 3,322,147 it is the third largest by nominal GDP in the world

      • Posted By: Horrible Bastard @ 12/31/2008 9:17:46 AM

Please define "stepping up to world issues".

Is that when you invade the wrong country?

The Unite States has NO obligation to the rest of the world. To place a gun at the head of Americans an take their money to prop up a stone-age government that has been one failure after another for over 5000 years is a loser. The problem of all the backward countries is their fault. That caaan not be fixe by whinning to the American people. It must be remembered that "No one really wants to live in a village".

    Great read.

And don't mind the comments below. Obviously your reasoning in this well put article are lost upon one dimensional fools such as "Proud American" (and there are no greater enslaved than those that truly believe they are free-thank you Goethe)...not that the world takes people like them seriously anyways. They are merely pawns on a chessboard that are moved around strategically until their end.

I would have too agree with some of the other posters. I believe everyone has wiped (911) out of there memory with the exception of a few. This man "President Bush" didn't have a chance with what happened to this country on that day. The media should be ashamed for what they have done. Americans need to "fight the real enemy..." Boycott Hollywood and the media...

  • Posted By: voiceofreason534 @ 12/31/2008 10:11:17 AM

While one could certainly agree with the fact that the United States acting unilaterely has created a poor opinion of our citizens as bullies and fools cut off from the world, I don't believe that is the whole story. I would say that if any group has an image problem, it would be the entire Muslim religion. We have seen this in Darfur and in Somalia, in Afganistan and Pakistan, in London and Madrid and in New York and Washington. How did it look to the rest of the world when terrorist threats and riots occured over a simple comic strip in the Netherlands? Despite my firm belief in every individuals right to believe what they will, any religion that dictates forced conversion or death does not offer viable options for communication or finding a middle ground. Simply put, those who follow Islam are allowing those who represent the worst of humanity to be thier voice to the world. It is difficult to believe protestations of the Koran as a document of peace when every month the world is subjected to ample proof to the contrary. Yes, the United States must clean up its image and work towards greater communication in the world community, but that is a two-way street. The world must work towards presenting a better image of itself. Because if Jesus Christ or Mohammed or Abraham or Confucious could see us today, they would turn their head away in shame.

I am a White southern Christian (NOT GAYor ATHEIST) and am appalled @ the way the world has gone because of the last 8 years. Give the new administration a chance to fix it.. Being a liberal does not necessarily mean being pro gay, atheist, and what ever you think about hating us. My self has problems with the agenda of the liberal side but it still boils down to what was evident when FDR was coming into power; the poor are getting poorer and the rich are getting richer. It is to the point that what ever happens on the other side of the world affects what happens in your world. You are a minority now that does not understand that there is another world out there that does not accept your view of the current status quo. We have an obligation from God to give our elected leaders a chance to make a better world or if not we still have the commandment. Personally, I do not care what Mahbubani has to say about what the US should do. I will work as long as I can and provide for my family and not worry about what the course of others take. The best advice I can give is to get on your knees and humble yourself and pray for ourselves and our leaders to do what is right for the world.

Another foreigner (USA hater) trying to tell us how to make them like us. What a ridiculous story. Personally I'm sick to death of everybody in the world telling us we're this and that, what we are is on the way out because liberal lemmings listen to idiots like this...
