A nuclear attack on middle east from either US or Israel must never be ruled out at all - it appears to be at least very central to Islamic life. As all muslims prey 5 times a day for death in jihad and seat in heaven ; this is the most practical way for a benevoilent kafir to delivery a heavenly martyrdom in jihad to all muslims on equal footing.... so that the Allah's stock of 72 goats/ martyr can be shared equally.

Sounds far fetched ? Just consider the peculiar case of 1 million deaths in the Iran Iraq war- this was no Jihad with Kafir and hence all those dead went to hell for no fault of theirs except that they had Saddam as "boss" - in the post Enron Post Lehman world we all god kafirs agree that this goof up is very unfortunate, dishonourable & so avoidable!

We should forget trying to install pro israel, pro western governments in all muslim countries and instead anilate the opium crops then leave afghanistan. Americas resources should be spent securing our boarders, removing all illegal aliens, and prosecuting the criminals in the Bush adminitration.

Americans are idiots......the taliban are using the age old mongol technique to fight the war on their chosen grounds at their chosen time........talibans have nothing to lose and Americans are losing everything...That land simply can't be conquered its geopgarphy beisde its people is so hostile that no foreigners can have their foothold...well American didn't learn anyhting from Vietnam but I hope Afganistan will make them learn something.

i'M GOING TO COMMIT HERESY HERE BY POSING A QUESTION AS OPPOSED TO USELESS VENTING. HOW DO WE SECURE OURSELVES FROM RADICAL ISLAM? WE DON'T HAVE A LEGITIMATE INTERST IN THE FORM OF GOVERNMENT THE AFGANS CHOOSE. WE DO HAVE A LEGITIMATE INTEREST IN SEEING TO IT THAT THESE PEOPLE CANNOT ATTACK US AGAIN. NOTHING WE HAVE DONE SINCE 9/11 HAS MADE US FUNDAMENTALLY SAFER FROM RADICAL ISLAM. WE HAVE NOT BEEN ATTACKED AGAIN BECAUSE WE HAVE BENN SUCCESSFUL - SO FAR - IN BEING VIGILANT, BUT ARE WE GOING TO HAVE TO SPEND HUGE AMOUNTS OF MONEY REMAINING VIGILANT? FOR HOW LONG? FOREVER? i DON'T KNOW WHAT WE NEED TO DO, BUT I THINK THAT IS THE SUBJECT WE SHOULD BE TALKING ABOUT.

    • Posted By: Trooper101st @ 06/10/2009 3:13:23 PM

By picking and choosing who, when and where we strike. Right now its a-stan. Maybe a couple strikes against thier "shura" in Quetta would slow things down, but this is a battle of CIVILIZATIONS, whether we admit it or not.

Job 1 should have been to buy all the opium the Afghans could produce. Buy it direct from the farmers, therein enriching the farmers, who would buy tractors and fix their homes, pay taxes which would build schools, medical clinics and even hospitals. And they would elect their own government, and support the people who were supporting them. Gradually we could offer them a market for things they can grow and have grown and were once world renowned for: grapes. This was was conducted by idiots who have never learned and possibly cannot learn. The War on Drugs is not the Afghans' war or problem. It's America's war. If you can't do that it's time to get the bull out of the china shop.

    • Posted By: Iam3rd @ 01/30/2009 3:46:23 PM

Encouraging them to make opium sounds like a terrible idea. It seems like we need to get Pakistan to focus on Afganistan as well. Securing that border is the only way to move forward.

      • Posted By: Iconoblaster @ 05/29/2009 7:12:46 PM

Its not a matter of encouraging them to grow opium poppies (which they are already doing) but of giving them an alternative market for their crops that doesn't enrich our enemies. Besides which, the product IS useful for the production of legitimate drugs (like morphine) for which we already have a need. The idiotic "War on Drugs" has never made any sense anyway... that policy (prohibition) doesn't work to diminish drug supplies, or even reduce drug abuse, but DOES create a lucrative black market that criminals and terrorists will inevitably exploit.

Gotta agree. Why Iraq? Cheney&Bush had thier minds made up long before 9/11 about invading Iraq. There was no foresight in planning for this "extended" mission. Now, as we pull out of cities and draw down, the rats have come outta thier holes. There is a good chance of civil war breaking out. What did we gain? We all believed, at the root of the strategy was control of OIL. I may be wrong, but alotta people friendly to Cheney-Bush made a whole lotta money on this. Did they REALLY care about us? No, I came home with some kind of pathogen in my blood from drinking water that wasn't purified. I got real sick. How many more? You shower and you get fried...who's responsible? Ah, FUBAR

Nation building is a dream here. Most people here live like its 700AD. Alot of them behave like it too. Too many tribes, too much hate, too much division. Our mission is to engage T-ban/AQ and destroy them. When P-stan is no longer the "safe-haven" it is now, and HVT #1, 2 or 3 are dead then we can draw down. If the PAK gov., DOES take the fight to the militants, the job of pacifying A-stan will be easier. After that, let the UN rebuild A-stan. Iam afraid there must be a US military presence in Iraq and A-stan for years to come.

I hope The President and Hillary read these comments. We need to focus our resources elsewhere. What we fighting for? What we trying to prove? What if we win? What will it be? Freedom for whom? Let them have their mountains and caves in peace. Why not create some jobs.? We need to let them have their country as long as they leave us alone. As long as we are there, we will have trouble!

idiot writer still hasn't figured out the iraq war has been won!?he sounds like a liberasl idiot to me?

    • Posted By: Iconoblaster @ 05/29/2009 7:18:15 PM

Oh, really? What did we "win"? Thousands of our own soldiers, sailors and Marines dead, tens of thousands grievously wounded, hundreds of thousands of Iraqis dead, millions displaced, our treasury in the toilet and our influence in the world seriously diminished. We will be reaping the bitter consequences of the Iraq war for generations (and so will Iraq). Some victory.

US tried the War lord earlier also. It never worked. Military option is not the answer either as history has amply proved. US strategy of pushing the talibans across pakistan has done wonders to pakistan security. US alone can not resolve all the problems of the world, the earlier they accept this the better. Traditons evovled over the years are held sacred by people, its time we realize this fact and start modifying rather than chainging governments.

This article seems to be a repeat of previously discredited arguments. "They're not ready for democracy". "You're only helping the terrorists". "There's no military solution", and my personal favorite: "it's a quagmire!".

Afghani's know we're not there to occupy them, the US military acts fundamentally differently than did UK and USSR. Afghani's are not the sole ethnicity in all the world unable to govern themselves. Pakistan would be hurt much more by a premature US withdrawal which would leave emboldened extremists. We can win there just like we did in Iraq. Apparently we'll have to do so with the same misguided media and university intelligentsia dead weight. Prof. Bacevich was wrong on Iraq. He's wrong now.

  • Posted By: veteran61 @ 01/27/2009 6:06:33 AM

WHY are we not listening to the Historian's? Even in our own lifetime we can visibly see what has happen in Afganistan. My opinion is that this article is as close to 100% correct as we can get. It seems that we have no concept to the way life has been, nor currently is in many countries around the world. Military might cannot change this unless you are going to nuke the whole place and come back and start over again in about a thousand years. The other way, through education and nuturing may take just as long, it has taken our country since 1492 to develope into what it is today, how can we expect other countries to change within a decade?

    • Posted By: OZZmosis71 @ 02/03/2009 10:18:13 PM

Veteran I agree with you partly BUT this country has only been backsliding since then! We are actually in a worse state now than we have ever been. Political corruption, local governments maliciously prosecute the poor because they cannot afford to defend themselves. Real justice doesnt pour money into their pockets, oppressing the masses does!

I would add to this one more idea:make peace with Iran and let Iran take care of terrorist threat emitting from Afghanistan.Peace with all parties of Afghan factions and Financial and Trade Assistance Programs, such as Duty Free Access to American and EU markets for garments and other produces, such as fruits from tribal and war lord dominated areas in Afghanistan can be seen as a great bait. The tribal areas of Pakistan must also be included in the same string of beneficiary areas.

I agree we can't do it alone. The neighbors and the int'l community has to get involved. I'd be you can have a coalition government of the different factions in a centralized locations if you could get them focused on common objectives. I don't agree that getting out now would be the best option. It would just leave a power void. Somone would have to attach Afganistan again. Just depends on who grabs power and whom they hate more.

President Obama wasted no time in giving a TV interview to an "Arabic TV network".
He has instructed his envoy to listen, and vows not to dictate.
I feel that Obama's ability to respond with energy and clarity is a source of great strength
    for our future.

    Suggest:
Phase One of our strategy: Unite as Americans, douse our egos.
Accept that we are ignorant of the complexities involved here, and don't know yet what is the best way forward.
This is an ancient culture we are dealing with, going all the way back to the world's first city of Uruk.
We lack understanding of each other's cultures in a big way.
Can we stop bickering, blaming and bullying each other
    and work together?
I think if we can do this, we can work to improve ourselves and the whole world.

If we are not going to go all the way with this, that is denying AQ/T-ban the safe haven in the NWFP, FATA, we will be there for YEARS. Don't stop at the border, let us go ALL THE WAY. We can bomb the snot out of them coz the P-stani Army, ISI is in on it. They are the ENEMY. Let's do this and get it over with. F-ck PAKI's!!!!

Al-Qaeda leader Pervez Musharaff is going to USA, to do some lobbying.

Things are going to get a lot worse for the Pakistan Army.

India was until recently willing to provide some cover for the Pakistan army which planned and executed the Mumbai massacre. The way out would have been to just expose Lashkar-e-Toiba terrorists, and pretend as if the Pakistan army and ISI had nothing to do with the massacre. This is not easy anyways because LET is the jihadi wing of Pakistan army, and not an independent entity. The window for this possibility has evaporated because of the obscurantist attitude displayed by Gen Kayani so far.

India and US are now obliged to completely expose Pakistan army.

The idea was to provoke India to mobilize troops, thus enabling Pakistan army to give an excuse nott to fight Taliban on the Afghan border. India and USA worked together and have denied this opportunity to Gen Kayani.

When the dust settles, after Pakistan army is completely exposed people throughout the word- this will include the people of India and Pakistan- will realize Al-Qaeda and Pakistan army are one and the same.

I find Mr. Bacevich's position over-simplifies the situation in Afghanistan. And the difficulties of keeping track of subversive operations in the far reaches of the country in order to call in the air strikes is completely ignored. But my deepest concern is with the rusult of such a withdrawal on Pakistan. Already it appears as if there much influence being exerted by Afghan rebels on the choices being made by the Pakistani government. Does anyone really thing that this effor would diminish if the coalition pulled out? How long would it take for the rebels to take control of Pakistans nuclear capagility? And what then would be Mr. Bacefich's action...where do we sithdraw next.
Nothing would be nicer than to get the H** out of Dodge, as it were, but better to fully thing through the ramafications first...and I do not see evidence in this article of such analysis. Do the homework and then bring up the matter again when there is a full concept of all the possibilities and the probable results of each.
