Thank god, people can not live for long in cardboard shacks in cold climates. If we could, we might all be living in Mexico like countries; with Mexico like governments (at best). What is the place for public wealth in our future? Is class segregation the only possible path to human survival? If so, who makes the rules? The current economic system requires greatly increasing population growth (market growth); but the earth is reaching its limits. How do we change the meaning of 'markets'? Short term profits require short term thinking. How can governments, or anyone else, make profits available only in a longer term than 6 months? In the short term, the acidification of the oceans means nothing. Printing money can mean putting us to work or sending us to school. It can also mean more power for a few. In the US, our sacred trust is 'one man, one vote'. In our past we have struggled toward this goal. We are now intentionally failing this trust. We failed in 2000 and have reaped the 'rewards'. You do not think so? It is not about Pres. Bush. Until 'one man, one vote' is achieved, and it is easy to do much better, we and our children are going to suffer even more.

This is not a Utopian society. A Utopian Society is a perfect society, a society without problems. This of course absurd and can never happen, nor should it ever happen. A perfect society is a stagnant society, there would be no problems to fix and evolution will cease. However, to put it in Jacque Fresco's terms "The Future is a Beautiful Place". "The Venus Project is not what the future WILL be, but what the future CAN be".

    Chears!
    Happy New Year!

Ugh. The rules of nationalism, particularism are GIVEN. The answer lies within the given, not by changing (or hopelessly wishing for change in) the given.

"But this time, if properly managed, the rise of the rest needs to be destabilizing".(page 2)
Is that what the author really means? As I understand it, it should be: not destabilizing.

This Zakaria idiot, is so stupid, he makes your hair hurt. I don't know where Macaca lives, but it ain't the REAL world. How does this RAG even stay in print? If you're not in the Dentists' waiting room, or some Gas Station rest room, where would you even come across one of these? Nobody would actually BUY ONE. Would they?

Hmm, what the world needs is more centralized management of its affairs. . .

That is, to state it very clearly, individuals cannot be trusted to decide for themselves so the governments of the world need to step up with even more regulation so that they can write more rules, and better manage our lives.

This premise however is false even on it's own merits.

For Zakaria's premise to be true, our present "crisis" would have to be the result of not enough government oversight.

The world we live in is not one of unfettered markets, but of one extensive government regulation.

So Zakaria is starting on a false premise, and whatever his conclusion, it also will be false.

Perhaps he would rather say something to the effect that our highly regulated economic world needs to be more regulated to further rid it of the evils of capitalism, and the personal greed that stems from American style individualism. That would be more honest at least.

hi forty4. I know that the media in America serves a lot of propaganda, but please have a think about it. What has Castro, Chavez and Putin done against America?

America tried to overthrow the Venezuelian government. America has tried to kill Castro hundreds of times. Putin and Medvedev are trying to protect their borders as America is placing missiles on the border.

Only in America is it possible to market them, as a threat. What have they done to the US???

Cuba, under Castro, did his best to destabilize Central America as a Russian surrogate. Cuba sent 30,000 troops to Angola in the late 1980's and early 90's to slaughter the tribes not loyal to Dos Santos in Luanda. There are thousands of Cuban refugees in the US who could give you chapter and verse about Castro's atrocities and horrific human rights violations and Fidel's most notable accomplishment is that he has allowed the island to deteriorate to its present most pitiable state. When the victims of Russian worldwide expansion and greed turn to the US for help - the response is usually not like the 1930's and 40's when we ignored what was happening in Europe. The response, however, never pleases neither the left nor the right in this country. We were dragged into Somalia by an agenda driven news media and we accomplished nothing except the deaths of some very good men. If we don't get involved - ie. Dafur - we are wrong. If we launch into Bosnia to save Muslims from the Serbs -we are wrong. If we don't invade Pakistan to root out the Taliban - we are wrong. If we support Israel in its heroic defense - we are wrong. When we supplied medicine and food to the embattled Contras against the Russian and Cuban backed Sandanistas - we are wrong. There doesn't appear to be any foreign policy that will not come under attack by the press unless that policy is surrender oriented and one that does not provide aid to the weak and helpless but fosters an appeasement to the hostile forces who are causing the problem. Cuba has prostituted itself to the highest bidder since Castro rolled into Havana in 1959 with blood all over his hands. Now he is the lapdog of the megalomaniac Chavez. There is nothing new under the sun. US policy toward Cuba has always had human rights as the non-negotiable prerequisite in re-establishing relations with Cuba. I hope the next administration can make some progress after Castro mercifully leaves the planet.

A global utopia? How great this would be if mankind could actually pull this off. We could fix our uneven living standards and save our planet in the process. It's a mighty big goal.

    there is a natural rule
    and nature wins every time
    no one else prevails
some suffer and some succeed in transit
but in the end it all is balanced out
and the balance is so fine any power in this world cannot even begin to comprehend it

just really fed up of all this media rhetoric
please can we be a little positive instead of telling everyone who to hate or love
it is actually very petulant and also like preaching a cheap propaganda
    ever heard of the truth
    nothing ever changes in truth

Wow. You mean there's rules? Rules that Ahamdinejad and Putin and Chavez and Castro and Mugabe will obey?

    Lol.

I guess, then, that if we had more problems that affected the whole world, then the whole world will unite to solve them. If solving problems together tends to pull the world's nations together, then we need a proper set of worldwide problems to solve. Global warming seems to be one of these potential problems, but unfortunately our leaders have not acknowledged that the globe is warming from human activity. They seemed to put it in a category with Mother Nature and God's Will, and found scientists to affirm this as the North Pole melted. Such as this is why we voted so well this past November. We are just about to get a president who is ideally made for an approach to unity in the world that is more worthy of a great country's leadership.

    Mr. Fareed Zakaria,

You raised some interesting and engaging thoughts.

How ever, in your essay you failed to acknowledge that India is a rising (along with Brazil) economic power, but you indicated India is part of problem by including it with China / Paris / Russia and of course USA. Just like your 26/11 commentary, this shows your double standard.
