America's true sartorial heritage is simplicity, not sloppiness. It's time to lose the fanny packs.

Wow... I am tired of all the Obama haters ripping him one in here. Show some respect. When you realize that GWB will go down as the worst president, maybe you will have your eyes open. Have you not read or educated yourself about the horrible atrocities this administration has done? Educate yourself and even though I do not care for our current president, I do respect him. I wouldn't want his job. But please stop acting as if everyone that might lean towards the left is a horrible person. It is just ignorant and childish.

What humors me is that it seems its always the conservatives that want to put others down for their views. I think it shows that us left leaning people or ..... shhh its the horrible dirty name, liberals, seem to find we don't need to attack others and put them down to make ourselves feel better. Sure the author of this story needs help. But so does all the extremely judgemental conservatists in here. Learn some manners and respect other peoples points of view. You might learn something from them.

Its funny you all think the press is so left leaning and liberals. If I recall, Fox News gives a good right leaning view of the world as well as other news organizations. Stop whining and do something productive besides complaining.

Did they teach you at FAT camp that you are better than everyone else and therefore if they disagree with you then they are bad and worthless people. Shame on you Play ground Bully.

Kristie, you liberals are the ones who attempt to silence people with whom you disagree. You call it "hate speech". You crusade for free speech only when people agree with you! However, if a conservative dares to rock the boat and states their beliefs, it is the liberals who whine, complain, and accuse conservatives of "hate speech" and "intolerance". This is a bunch of nonsense, and I am sick of it!

When I have several items I need to have with me and I'm trying to keep a hand on my little granddaughter, I love having a fanny pack. It is like having an extra hand. I usually carry it on my shoulder, but when I need to have my hands free I will fasten it around my waist. I have a very nice pack that is fancier than most and I wouldn't trade it for anything. I don't have to worry about theft, as anyone would have a very hard time getting it off my waist and I always carry it in the front for safety and easy access. I developed serious shoulder problems after injuries a few years back and carrying a purse can be painful. I find that the fanny pack makes sure I keep a light load and don't end up with the pain I did before, even when I carry it on my shoulder. I'll never give it up.

Michelle Obama our guidepost for fashion?? Please, child, did you take a good look at her wearing that atrocious red and black dress on election night? I'll take fanny packs anytime!
    Martha

    • Posted By: Vixter @ 01/09/2009 12:40:23 PM

Sorry, but I LOVED Michelle's dress - and thought that it looked great with each one of their daughters wearing either a red or black dress. I carry a fanny pack to the gym so that I can keep all my junk in there (in public I use my purse). All the repugs that think a sports jacket & cowboy hat are the height of fashion need to get a life. The election is over and the intelligent man won. Deal with it - just as dems had to deal with dubya trashing our country.

The writer of this article crawled out of a vadka bottle< What's this " oboma offers new hope because he's more clean cut.. then.. Bush!" that's the stupidest thing I've heard in a long long time... Someone please sack this writer, who obviously is very very underqualified to be writing anything other then books for 3rd graders, if that, I wouldn't want my kids reading this crap either though.
And also.. who really uses fanny packs anyway? Only people over 60 tend to use them, and who really cares?
The real "stereotype of the ugly American" exists because of people like YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Get out of here pea-brain, go back to whatever hole you crawled out of.
Frankly I was offended when I read this crap about .. that Oboma is so clean cut and nice and will help our image.. as if bush was not... you must be rasist against whites to write something stupid like that.

  • Posted By: onnibay @ 01/01/2009 11:42:24 PM

This is ridiculous! I'm so tired of President Bush being blamed for EVERYTHING bad about America---and I don't believe there IS so much bad about America!!! Just shut up you stinking Obama liberals!!!

    • Posted By: krystie @ 01/02/2009 12:55:04 AM

Have you not noticed what hell our country is going through right now? How people's lives have been devasted from having been through the last 8 years....... you must have money to keep yourself warm, fed and housed.

Take a look around and open your eyes and your heart. The rest of the world hates us now. You have no idea how bad things really are because obviously you haven't suffered like the majority of the country or the world because of Bush and his cohorts. Walk in my shoes for a day and see what hell I live in because of our government.

      • Posted By: MarathonWoman @ 01/08/2009 11:41:15 PM

Krystie, I am sorry you have had things go wrong in your life. I don't know you or your circumstances. With that said, though, you must stop acting like a victim and take responsibility for your life! Blaming other people and the government for your bad circumstances is not going to get you anywhere!! Seek the LORD. He will do you good! I have the LORD Jesus to take care of my needs. He forgave me of all my wrongdoings. He is my Saviour - not Barack Obama, not the government, and not even George W. Bush! Krystie, what you don't realize is that the MORE so-called "help" and "intervention" that we get from the government, the MORE the government will take control of our lives! As for what the world thinks of us, do you REALLY think that Barack Obama is going to make everything so much better? I can tell you that it will be no picnic in emerald green fields. You say that Barack Obama is going to save our economy and our nation. The fact is that he WON'T!!! If Congress supports all the things he has proposed to do, it will BANKRUPT this nation!! God forbid that happens. I just want to warn you, though, that if things go south, I don't want to hear any liberals whining that it was all George W. Bush's fault! If things go south, people who voted Barack Obama will have no one to blame but themselves. It's time to wake up! You cannot expect the government to provide for your needs! That is called laziness! You are to take responsibility for your life. You cannot have your hands out expecting the government to give you everything. A hard work ethic is what made the USA great NOT government hand-outs! As for what the rest of the world thinks of us, do you REALLY think that other countries care about what we think of them? No, the other countries dont' care what we think of them! As for the fashion thing, I have stated before that I don't like fanny packs, and I think that people should put their best foot forward when it comes to how they dress. I don't like "comfortable" clothing when it really looks frumpy. However, people have a right to dress however they see fit. Even with that said, this should not be a political issue. Again, it's just one more cheap shot that liberals take at George W. Bush. You should recognize the idiocy of all this! Obama is NOT going to work miracles! Just accept it!

As far as i'm concerned the oh so superier fashion guru's(yes that was sarcasm) should like the Amish go live in their own society. They can be away to what they consider such a disgusting sight of comfortable and happy people. How in this article was explained the image of America relies alot on how they dress is amusing. Americans are Americans. We are all equal. You are not superier because you own a $400.00 skirt. Infact nobody is of more importance of others in America. It's like if plankton the very bottom of the food chain was extint. Think about it, we need plankton! we need all sorts of people is where i'm getting at. We need them all! Or the cause is imbalancement!

What a moron! First of all, it's Eurotrash who are more associated with the fanny pack. I've never seen any American under age 50 anywhere wearing one. Secondly, what's with the dig on Bush? When casually dressed on his ranch, how's he different from Reagan, whom the Euros adored. Finally, no matter how I ever thought of politics, Presidents (and P-elects) have never been fashion icons. So, this trashing of Bush and praising of Obama are utter nonsense, just like the rest of this article.

  • Posted By: workerbee6429 @ 01/08/2009 10:02:40 PM

typical of the media - focusing on outward appearances rather than what really matters: internal CHARACTER AND MORALS . . . which, unforutnately, the incoming socialist, anti-Israel, anti-family executive officer is SORELY LACKING!

  • Posted By: Ms.Kruse @ 01/08/2009 8:10:31 PM

I enjoyed this article until the last paragraph. Why is "work/family balance" always characterized as a challenge for women only? Will Obama have no responsibility to his kids once he starts his new job? Reddy, please join us in the 21st century.

Ahhhhhh, the devil does wear prada...

  • Posted By: JustJen @ 01/08/2009 10:13:06 AM

Oh honey, if you don't understand the atrociousness of a fanny pack, well, god bless you. The fanny pack has all the fashion sensibility of a colostomy bag. Who on earth would want a band, several inches thick protruding from thier waistlne? Anyone who wears a fanny pack has simply gven up or never looked in the mirror while wearing one! Of all the worthwhile causes to champion in this world, the fanny pack? really?

    • Posted By: T.C. SOMB @ 01/08/2009 7:22:20 PM

I and all other Americans who wear colostomy bags, and have boil their catheters to reuse them agree with you. I like your connection, and I think I'm going to forever call fanny packs colostomy bags, but there's one thing that you may have forgotten: Colostomy bags are for ***, fanny packs are for *** that you still want access to.

  • Posted By: T.C. SOMB @ 01/08/2009 7:08:00 PM

Let's be honest, the fanny pack is the homely cousin to the wallet, but it can also be as indispensable as Batman's utility belt; which of course, is also something you shouldn???t wear in public. For one thing, it advertises where your money is, while protecting you from not getting robbed.

Americans, I???m speaking to you from the bottom of my heart. I too own a fanny pack, but while traveling abroad we must remember a few things. While this recession continues who???s gonna rob an American?

    1. Looking like an American tourist might actually be safer than dressing as someone who just got off the train. Sloppy or Street-Smart? You decide.
    2. We also have an image to protect. From now on America, I want you to get used to carrying a fat Wallet in your back pocket again. Stuff that thing with napkins if you have to.

Its articles like this, that are the reason, that I will never again subscribe to a left-wing rag like Newsweek. As others have commented; I checked out the article for fashion; not for another political statement, from the mesmerized Obama supporters. This is a new one to me! Now the Republicans and present administration are tacky dressers and the Lord Obama and his cronies are the height of fashion. Oh; give me a break! I have never seen such a fawning bunch of leftist media types acting this hysterically. You got your messiah elected; now lets see what he can do!

The fanny pack for me when overseas makes me feel that my items are secured. That is the only reason why 'I' wear them. We Americans have a trait that was left unsaid in the article, that trait would be, we are too willing to help people. Those same people we help when overseass can and do most often take our kindness for weakness or for stupidity and steal from us by picking our pockets and such. This happens all the time. I travel a ton for my job and I go to the big cities quite a bit and I find that there are PLENTY of well dressed men and woman. Remember, the Americans who are overseas on vacation are in fact 'ON VACATION'. And let them secure their items in a way that makes them feel safe. We as I;m doing now shouldn't have to justify *** to any one. Don't get me wrong, I do think there are a lot of great fashions in other countries, heck they are everywhere. But to knit pick our fanny pack, our shorts and t-shirts is a bit extreme and a desperate search for stuff to write about. But it is a good artcile, it caught my eye.

  • Posted By: mikejd44 @ 01/08/2009 4:33:28 PM

Well, i agree wiht some of you, but the fact is that fashion and politics are 2 complete different subjects. I used to use fanny pacs, not anymore, i do have to agree that they are very usefull, i can put my wallet, my cellphone, my change, lillte sunblock, etc.... they are very good when you are travelling, but is not my style, i dont like the way they look, maybe am more into fashion than my family, all my family uses it, even my brother at 33y/o, btw, i dont think it is just an american tradition to wear them, i live in FL and i see a lot of peple from Brasil and Europe wearing it, and my family is from Venezuela, It is just a matter of taste and likes, and if you think you like it and it works for you just wear it!!

  • Posted By: Faelice @ 01/08/2009 3:35:12 PM

The point of America's fashion was good, though the fact that you even mentioned politics was unnecessary.
William Howard Taft was America's largest president, weighing 330 pounds with a 54 inch waistline, but he certainly didn't give other countries the popular opinion that all Americans are fat.
The election of the current president offers no 'opportunity' about fashion. Americans have the ability to change their image, and it has nothing to do with if the president has "youthful, clean-cut good looks" or is old and tacky.

  • Posted By: Faelice @ 01/08/2009 3:25:49 PM

Eh, I was listening until politics was brought into it. America has had many images, and I remember seeing pictures of the stereotypical American tourist when I was a child. It has nothing to do with where the president is/was from, how they dressed, or whether their looks were youthful or not.
William Howard Taft was our largest president- he weighed around 335 pounds and had a 54 inch waistline, but I'm sure he's not what gave other countries the popular opinion that all Americans are overweight.

  • Posted By: darcygrace @ 01/08/2009 2:26:45 PM

As a traveller who has visited 96 countries I can attest to the fact that some American's stand out due to their lack of sartorial skils, but to somehow equate and blame that in President Bush, is yet another pathetic attempt by leftwing meida to cut down the presidnet and to build up B.H. Obama. Americas fashion challenges started long before Bush was even born and it wont end with his departure.
