Of course we are a nation of shallow lazy slobs. We all want instant gratification and do not want to earn anything anymore. We all want to be given things. After all, look at what little accomplishment Obama has, how we don't know a thing about his background because the media won't investigate him (like they do Joe Plumber or Palin), and yet he gets elected because he's good looking and can talk the talk that others want to hear. Well whooptiedo. Finally, people wear fanny packs because of THIEVES. Mr. Reddy conveniently left that out.

i agree with the suit...shall good anywhere...yet please, understand, i've been 'alomst' robbed in France, Britain, & amany other parts of Europe...yet because I'm 6"1" & 215 pounds (and i admit a bit tough looking ) i've been able to 'stare'people down...yes, i'm alert and watchful, yet the avetrage tourist would be decimated. the fanny6 back or better yet one onder the shirt is a NECESSITY, unless a country were to guarantee my safety.

The Fanny Pack was an answer to another problem! The majority of my clothes were made with out pockets! Gat'a put you valuable stuff somewhere!
President Obama is a black man! And a lmajority of upward mobile minorities feel a strong desire to overcome the stereo type of lower class america! And what he wares makes a statement setting him apart ....I know we can do better & it's fun! A big smile can do wonders! "Blame it all on Bush" Bush and his father deserve everything they have earned!

If they are talking about you behind your back, they aren't friends......Der.......I'm reminded of the teenage girl that has 253 "friends" on her Facebook "Friends List". I think people don't know the difference between a friend and an aquaintance.

The author is based in Berlin and so doesn't have the joy of watching European and Asian tourists in DC. It's a worldwide problem; not restricted to Americans.

The story is not blaming President Bush for the current fashion trends. It merely compares his style to that of President-Elect Obama. Frankly, it is like comparing apples and oranges. They are from two different generations - I dress differently than my daughter. But anyway, all politics aside, the article is correct. We are a nation of lazy slobs. I absolutely abhor the pajama pants thing. The pants are bad enough but now they figure if they can wear their pj's anywhere, they may as well pair them with their fuzzy slippers. After all, they're just running to the grocery store, gas station, library, drugstore. . . . The whole point is you are judged by how you look, and the world looks at us and says, "Eeww." We need to change that.

Comfort has a lot going for it ,and accompanied by style, synonimous with my vision of the american tourist and living in Ireland I get to see a lot of AMERICAN TOURISTS. I have never had a problem with their style, good manners, and joie de vivre.
Cut yourself a break Americans. There is no need for a makeover. We Irish love you the way you are.

There is absolutely NOTHING fashionable or attractive about a fanny back. I don't care if you're is bedazzled or adorned with giant diamonds. If you have any friends at all, they're talking about you behind your back.

If they are commenting about you behind your back, they are not friends.

I am a soldier stationed in Italy and every freakin Italian I have seen wears the fanny packs!! Obviously Mr. Germany does not travel at all. Hey- at least we shower daily! So if we were to dress like Italians we would be wearing giant sunglasses that cover half of our face and are different colors, pants for men that are so tight you can see their balls, then sag with them so it looks like you just took a crap and have hair that is dyed bright red and white and goes in three different directions. Then if you are a woman you are supposed to wear 5 inch heels in the snow with a mini skirt and giant earrings. Because thats comfortable!! Hey Sameer quit being so jealous that Americans can actually travel, and get in your little Punto and take a trip down South, see what real diverse culture looks like.

I am a 23 year old attractive young lady and I often sport a fanny pack. They are functional and fashionable if worn correctly, and they are great for bars and clubs. Hands free, ya'll! BRING BACK THE FANNY PACK!

You're missing the point. have you traveled around recently? people practically take the plane in their PJ's and generally dress like slobs. Being put together is part of our so called values.
Brummel ( the Dandy) said that you can judge a man by his shoes and his hair.. last I was at the mall I was appalled.
When you look at 50's and 6's archive films and pictures people are neat looking no matter where, look around you in the street and tell me we still look the same...
not to mention that almost everyone is grossly overweight...

Don't hate the fanny pack! I'm a 23 year old fairly attractive young lady and I often wear a fanny pack. They are functional and fashionable if worn correctly. They are great for bars and clubs because you don't have to lug them around on your shoulder. Hands-free, ya'll! BRING BACK THE FANNY PACK!

As a Democrat, I have to say I have never seen President Bush wear anything but the most well-tailored suits and casual clothes. Bush always looks great. All the conservative/liberal bashing is as old and tired as the fanny pack, so let it go already, will you?

What's this type about Obama's dressing? Yes, both he and his wife are classy dressers. We cannot dictate how someone is to dress. Americans have always dress for comfort and not for style, for the most part. The Caribbean and Asian people dress extremely formal and this has to do with their history, since they were ruled by the British for hundred of years and adopted some parts of the British culture. Go into the workplace and look at how a Caribbean or Asian person dress! They are very formally attired. I do not think we should worry about the Americans mode of dressing because I have always believed that Americans dress for comfort and not for style.

Yes, you are quite the genius. It is obviosly Bush's fault.

I agree that sloppy American tourists with their ugly shorts, ill fitting tee shirts, and fanny packs look downright awful. INeither my husband nor I would ever dress that way and we travel all around the world. However, the group dressed even worse than an American tourist, is a German tourist. And being that the writer lives in Germany, I find it hard to believe she's missed the typical German tourist outfit of baggy shorts, dark socks, sandals and women's unshaven legs. And ever see a German leave a tip? Neither have I!
And as others have pointed out, the Japanese tourists don't look so great either.
So while I applaud the writer for encouraging poorly dressed tourists to take some pride in their dress, I think that the comments should not be directed to Americans alone. The "Ugly Tourist Outfit" can be seen on people with no taste all around the world.
George Bush? I don't like his politics, but the man is always well dressed. And I agree that thinking Obama is going to change how American dresses is a laugh! Let him fix the economy, and put us on the road to peave and we'll all worry about what people wear on vacation!

    • Posted By: callahans20 @ 01/01/2009 9:30:59 AM

I can't even begin to tell you how much I agree with you! I travel extensively around the world and I've actually been stopped at customs for being TOO well-dressed. They said I looked like a smuggler.

  • Posted By: graylobo @ 01/01/2009 9:27:14 AM

Yes, you are correct and quite a genius. It is obviously Bush's fault.
