I agree with Irshad Manji. Her article was right on but let's not wait for governments (we could all grow old). Start with American women helping Muslim women. We have money to invest in seed capital for small women-owned businesses. Organize us.

Unfortunately empowering women goes against Christian evangelical extremist here in the US, and they have much (to much) political power. Time we realized that the Jesus praising hate monkeys are a far greater threat to our freedoms and the world than any Muslim fundamentalist.
a little off point ?
Totally on point, one extremists is no better than the other. Both religions are full of sheeple as well.
Nope. Part of empowering women is providing access to birth control. The social conservatives have a very strong influence on our foreign aid policies.
Hate mongers are hate mongers regardless of which creed they profess. The set up of the us-against-them is destructive. Which is why war is exactly the wrong solution - whether in Iraq, Afghanistan or the Gaza Strip. The enmity is deepened.
The Talmud instructs that you need to find the middle way.
The only way to defeat Islamic extremists is for the world to move on from dependence on fossil fuels. Once that occurs, nobody will care what they think or how upset they are. And defeating them will not be hindered by people trying to curry favor with those who hold the keys to the energy lifeline as currently constituted.
And as far as extremism is concerned - the Muslim who is not an extremist is unusual, to say the least.
Dolmance, I think you have an extremist mind. You could be dangerous.
Your description was accurate until you got to the mind part. Dol is more a tape recorder.
And again Anti US sentiments around the globe and in the Muslim world can't be ended as long as US and it allies (sadely one on eleft) continue their ani Muslim policies around the world and don't give Muslims what it ows them, Freedom of Palastinians and compensation of decades long sufferings, freedom of Iraqis and compensation for all the deaths and destruction US caused and freedom of Afghanis, Afghanis have been a victims of US deception since Russian defeat in Afghanistan. Untill an unless US stops Israel for its aggression against Palastinians and force Israel to give Palastinians what it owes them, not only peace can't be achieved in the region, US will continuously be blamed for it as its US arsenals (Jets and Tanks) being used against palastinians.
I HAVE WHAT AMERICA OWES MUSLIM RIGHT HERE IN MY TOILET BOWL!
You decided to take a swim in your toilet bowl?
I pray " May God open your inner eyes and guide you to the right path".
As one who strongly believes in an afterlife, as you will, and that there are many paths too it I am most offended by the arogance of religious intolerance. Since no one alive and sane has seen or adequatly captured his presence in any way to be construed as overwhelmingly convincing yet so many are willing to kill their neighbor over this unprovable belief. The UN Human Rights Ammendment fails to go far enough and the organization that needs to replace it must demand that any member nation agrees to criminal penalties for any and all within their juristiction who practice religious bigotry in the form of violence and murder. Competition between religions is healthy and promotes growth, understanding, and tolerance. Those who believe someone elses belief will somehow undermine theirs are weak and unconvinced believers in the strength of their own faith who challenge the God given rights of others to choose their own path to God, via honest, informed, and educated choice. Fat Joey has it right.
Continued from previous,
Miss. manji lets now talk about your suggestions and reasons of current problems in the Muslim world,
1- Most of the problems of the Muslim world are due to the fcat that Muslim world doesn't have true leadership. All the rulers in the muslim world are puppets of US and are serving themselves. Since the same rulers are only serving themselves and aren't representative of their public so they have no interest in creating a model society that ISLAM stands fo and meand forr.
2- Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) during his speech on last hajj said " I am leaving two things behind me a- Quran. b- My sunnah (my way of life). and as long as you hold and follow both you will never be sorry. Now the Muslims not only moved away both from QURAN and SUNNA and it led to their DEMISE.
3- Many so calledMuslims like Miss. Manji instead of following teachings of Islam have come up with new explanations of Islamic believes based upon their twisted and crazy thinking and its all to gain personal benefits.
4- Individuals like Miss. manji and Fareed Zakria are created, sponsored and financed by anti Islam forces, who pick them up for their twisted and rebellion ideaology about Islam and used for ANTI ISLAM propaganda. This is also a big problem of current situation. There are lot many individuals with better understandings about Islamic beleives and Philosophy, but they are never given a chance to come on print/screen media to explain what ISLAM realy is and why Muslims are suffering.
And before I finish I would like to mention that many of the current problems around the world (TERRORISM especially)are due not only to unjustice but also due to ANTI MUSLIM policies of US and the western world. US war on terror is nothing but a planned and organized effort to control the resources of the Muslim world and to protect Israel. US has lost all its credibility and influence around the world for its anti Muslim war on terror. Look at how many times US lied about the facts on world forum and how many resources have been spent only to satisfy the dirty ego of some FANATIC, EXTREMIST AND FUNDAMENTAL CHRISTIANS. More than 4,250 US soldiers died, more than 25,000 injured and aprx. trillion Dollar spent. Not only this around a million Iraqis killed and wounded and life from Iraqis snatched in the name of FREEDOM (a deception).
So current problems of the world are due to zoinist and non zoinist's anti Islam policies and conspiracies and so called Muslims like Irshad Manji, who due to their twisted, sick and insane ideas about ISLAM are spreading CHAOS only for personal gains. Can some one tell me the QUALIFICATIONS of Irshad manji, that qualifies her for the scholar position she is holding. The only qualification is her sick and twisted Ideas about ISLAM.
Are you sure the cause of the problems in Muslim countries isn't from corruption??? It seems like every person that get's put in a position of authority in ANY African, Middle Eastern or Far Eastern country immediately starts lining their pockets w/ their communities money.
The West's bias against Muslims comes from 40 years of watching the most extreme, ruthless, and indiscriminant acts of violence perpetrated since the Khmer Rouge. I think the second source of Muslim isolation is the act of declaring a piece of land as "HOLY." There's nothing sacred about Mecca, Medina, Jerusalem, Paris or DisneyWorld for that matter. Only God is Holy. Everything else is worldly by definition and therefore Not Holy. Declaring that it is a sin worthy of death for a non believer to even be in an entire region of the world is the most ridiculous form of zenophobia.
I am so proud to be a Protestant! I worship the Christ! Compared to Him, who really cares who runs Bethlehem now? Priorities, people!!!
Little girls walking to school have acid thrown on them and their teachers. Radical Islam does not believe in educating females. Those little girls have parents who allow and make it possible for them to attend school anyway. Obviously, there are people who are not followers of the more radical brand of Islam and those people just need a bit of assistance to be able build a life. When jobs are scarce and very low paying it is most difficult to utilize your full ability and potential. I would rather spend $200.00 on helping someone to start a business that will take care of their family and help to change the world they live in. Programs with microloans have been used in places like Africa, enabling women to make products that are brought to the U.S. (baskets, rugs, jewelry) and sold with the money going back to the women in Africa, enabling them to buy more supplies and take care of their families. They have become self-sufficient with just a little bit of a boost up. Makes sense to me.
Montana450815, who told you that throwing acid to the girls is part of the Islamic teachings? Please do not write something that you don't know. This just show how stupid you are! Can I then say that bombing the innocent in Iraq is enjoined by the US constitution?
You did not read anywhere in my post that I said Islam teaches the throwing of acid. I said it does not believe in the educating of girls. I put the blame for the acid on the individuals who do it and the religious leaders who tell them it is OK to do such things. I believe it is their own sick interpretations that makes them think they have the right to do such things. I believe the evil is on them, not on the religion. You are reading words into my post that are not there. Additionally, by calling people stupid for words that you are imagining makes you look like the one whose level of intelligence should be in question.
Any man from any religion who seeks to impose his beliefs upon anouther is guilty of being a cultist. He who has so little faith in his own belief that he must force it on others is the weakest of all. A true religion is not forced from the pulpet but encouraged by the pulpet. Most muslems toil their lives away in cultish bondage to their faith just as do so many Catholics and fundamentalist Jews, I do not speak against their right to live this way (strong evidence points to this being healthy for them) but I do speak for the rights of those who do not. You "malikrose3" and "muslimmuslim" seem to stand clearly in favor of forcing everyone to see things your way even if you have to kill them to do it. I stand in support of the many muslims who want the vengfull violence to end in Gaza so that the people of Gaza can begin to rebuild their lives as is happening in the West Bank. Over 5 years ago I was called a fool when I said that we as Americans sent the wrong Army to Iraq. I said we should have sent 150,000 feminists and than dared Sadam to harm a hair on their heads. This is why I support Miss. Manji in her attempts to throddle radicalism in the cultist side of the Muslim world. Hatred becomes an overpowering evil as addictive as any drug and that affects rational thinking just as adversely. This makes you 2 part of the problem and her part of the solution. There is no solution but death for someone in your point of view.
Miss, Manji, I cannot agree with your article. I would like to, but I do not believe the facts support your argument. First of all, no one has or should have moral authority over Muslims except Muslims themselves. To suggest otherwise is to encourage an emotional/religious equiailent to nation building: If there is enlightenment (an arguable point) to be achieved, it must be by Muslims for Muslims...a development for which I will not hold my breath.
The second reason that your point of view cannot, in my opinion, become reality is the very detailed and impassioned point of view by poster malikrose3 (appearing just previous to my post). Most Muslims complain of Americans, while they build houses of worship and are given freedoms here, but do not attack or complain of other countries where they are actively prosecuted...even to death. I know it is currently the vogue to always blame someone else for one's misfortunes, but the Muslim promotion of America to the Great Satin is ridiculous in the extreme. I honor your desire, but your arguement is unfortunately specious.
In a month, when President Obama closes Guantanamo and the innocent are set free in America we will find out in due course whether we have persons who would disagree and negotiate for changes in policy or persons who are absolutist and violent towards those with whom they disagree. And should violence occur, by the reaction of the Muslims around the world will we know the beliefs and intent of the Muslim community. I fear that it will not be what Miss Manji would like and more in tune with the viewpoint of malikrose3.
It is clear to me that belief in themselves and in fanaticism is inherent in today's Muslims, while those of us in the so-called free world believe in nothing so much as self-flagellation, guilt (whether appropriate or not) and a need to make everyone else love us. A wise man once said, "If everyone likes your, you are doing something wrong." We don't have to believe in what someone else believes, and they don't have to believe what we believe, BUT we both must come to understand that each must be left to their own views without judgment...I don't want moral authority over Muslims, and I don't want them dictating my beliefs on pain of death. Enough.
This is a humanitarian approach as well as a very practical approach which I hope our American leaders embrace. Paula Hannah, Erie, Pa
START BY ARRESTING HATE MONGERING MUSLIM PREACHERS,CLOSE THE MADRASAS'S
There is no such thing as religious "extremism". God does not grade on a curve. You either get it right or you get wrong, there isnt any extra credit for being "extreme". Those men who were responsible for the attacks on America on Sept 11, 2001 (and other dates), believed their religion commanded them to do so, and that they alone were following their religion correctly. There wasnt any "extreme" in their point of view, they were doing what they were taught by their religion as the way to god. And that all of the moderate Muslims were falling short, failing themselves their religion their god. To label these men as "extremists" is to say they had excelled at their religion above and beyond that of the "moderate" Muslim. The post 9/11 message should have been that these men were "religious failures" not "extremists. Muslims leaders around the world should have condemned their actions and explained why those men were "religious failures". But they did not and indeed would not condemn them for their actions because they read and believe in the same scripture. These so called "extremists" are either getting their religion correct or they are not, and as I recall god does not choose from the moderately righteous. Christianity has a very long list of crusaders and martyrs, were these people extremists? The church doesn't seem to think so. As they hold them up with reverence, icons to emulate.
seestheworldclearly, I agree with you.
All religions are the invention of men. All religious texts have been written by the hands of men. All religious understandings and interpretations have come from the minds of men.
Moderation. The middle road is the path to peace. Recognizing the humanity of our "enemies" turns them into our "brothers". Amen. Shalom. May it be so. Great article.
kll99, go tell this to Bush
west gained its reformation from within itself-problem with musilms world is tha its coming from outside-why is it the responsibility of US to bring change in the muslim world- when muslims are going to wakeup??what a tragedy that a christian woman can go to space for 20days ,work in a closed capsule with other men, and a muslims girl cant even get pass 8th grade ???some thing is wrong with this...i think it was bernard shaw, who said "islam is one of the great religions, but it s muslims are its worst." it makes me cry....role of fathers is prime-i do not believe that " you teach a boy ,and you teach a boy,and you teach a girl , you teach a family- some thing inherently wrong in this-,men have as much responsibility,as women...men must be taught alsp-especially if they are incharge of the family...prophets were all men ...
muslims must know , they can not create a perfect society-,for Man is fallible, and human behavior is unpredictable-,perfectionis in God itself-By the way , has any one heard about Hashem Aghajiri- where is he? still in jail in Iran??i think he is the contemprorary martin luther[15thcentury] of the islamic world..."do not follow mullahs like monkeys..." O muslim, think....
k2pak, I agree with you

OK. First thing I notice is that your name is Irshad Manji. Isnt that like someone from Europe of non-Islamic background saying that should promote the same from countries like Syria or Iran? Seems like the only reason ANYONE in the middle east has any power is from oil. I hope all Gods find a way to get rid of it and put things back the way they were before it.
True. Easier SAID than DONE. In the House of SAUD there is NO FREEDOM of religion. Saud decides your religion for you.
Why should SAUD followers be free to practice THEIR religion outside SAUDi Aribia?
MANJI SURELY HAS TRIED TO THROW SOME SLIGHTLY FRESH IDEAS TO BRING THIS WAR OF THE CIVILIZATIONS TO AN END. BUT COUNTRIES SHOULD NOT THROW AWAY THEIR MONEY FOR MICRO CREDITS AS IT HAS ALL THE CHANCES TO GO IN TO THE WRONG HANDS AND OUR OWN MONEY COULD BE USED BY THE RADICALS TO HARM US. BUT STILL I DO APPRECIATE THE WISE INTENTIONS OF MANJI, .

Some so-called religions are just the sources of misery and evil. History is full of illustrations for regressive and destructive forces of these religions. They are so poisonous; causing their followers to have hallucinations. They are based on their blood-thirsty gods; producing angry murderers. The problem is that they brainwash a vast number of followers to the degree that they are recognized and legit; and keep on infecting people from one generation to the next because they invade heredity and DNA; just like viruses.
This is exactly the type of information that the world needs in order to understand and change the current base line that enables terrorist in the first place. Counter terrorism must address and mitigate the violent threats, and what drives belligerents to pick up arms in the first place. Cut the local support of jihadist, and you cut their ability to operate.
