Does this apply to christian fundamentalism too?

First of all, jbrinkmeyer, the palestinians are decidedly not defenseless. After weeks and months of lobbing rockets (made in China and Iran) into Israel, these criminal terrorists have the audacity to expect the world to rescue them from the retaliation they so richly deserve.
Certainly, Israel is more powerful than the ignorant hordes of hamas.... that's one reason why the palistinians should be trying to achieve peace... not firing rockets. There immoral and reprehensible attacks have provoked a "sleeping giant" to borrow a phrase. Too damn bad if they have brought death and destruction upon themselves in their quest to annihilate the Jews. All civilized nations should be joining together to wipe out these vermin.
As to women in Islamic states... just refuse to make any more little jihadists. Teach your children how evil their fathers are.
THEN there may be a turnaround in Islam... however, hundreds of years of living like primitive rock throwers has taught them nothing... do not hope too high.
good answer !!!
All people in difficult situations need to do their best to listen and hear the other perspective, acknowledge that there are PEOPLE with opposing views and beliefs, that only with understanding can a compromise be reached and only with a continued effort of dialogue and a willingness to reach beyond our comfort zones can a solution be sustained.
Rage fueled by fear or irgnorance never brings a desired results.
What needs fixing is not Uslam, what needs fixing is the west's double standrad when dealing with issues that concern the Muslim world, As long as th west keeps supporting state the state terorism of Israel and treating Muslim victims as less than animals anything coming from the west will be lookedat with suspicion. The U.S should start by supporting democracy regardless of who it brings to power until that democracy sorts out who best represents the the interests of the people of the Muslim world.

Liberating Muslim women would destroy Wahhabi style Islam. The fanatics know this. If it wasn't for their fear of our doing just that, there probably wouldn't even be an Al Qaida. This whole thing is about women.

I'd rather see a sermon than hear one. I believe we all learn more by humble examples of doing what is "right" than being fed propaganda that gets stuck in our throats because it doesn't ring true. The United States used to be the nation the world watched to see how things were done "right" - how to treat its people, resolve conflicts or handle a crisis. We have become who the world looks to when it needs to point a finger at what is "wrong" and immoral and we are a bully about it all, in the process.
By holding our government and our leaders to the highest standards, we can do more to show the greater world what it is to be "good" and do "right" than anything else. We must first clean our house before we are in a position to offer assistance to anyone else.
Irshad Manji, you are disillusioned with your own belief. How do you think that your idea can work while you are thinking about Islam from the western point of view? It is like a "man" trying to solve a "woman's" problem. Don't be so stupid. I think jbrinkmeyer is more realistic than you. Irshad think before you speak.
Manjani may be in some nominally cultural form a "Muslim," but she is so out of touch with anything even closely resembling mainstream Muslim opinion that she could just as well not be. Her suggestion that authoritative scripture can easily be set aside by Muslims to make way for nebulous notions of secular human rights is laughable just as it is laughable to expect devout Christians to do the same. I don't know what world she is living in, but it isn't the real world.
And where does she think America is going to find the moral capital necessary to convince Muslims to abandon their traditions and beliefs? What they are seeing now is just how little America cares for Muslim women and children as once again they've chosen to give Israel a green light for yet another brutal assault on impoverished and largely defenseless Palestinians. How is this convincing Muslims that they should listen to anything America has to say?
Manji may have some impressive credentials with the intelligensia but she is clueless when it comes to understanding the dynamics she wishes to change.
