I'm sorry but I don't think it's Islam that is keeping women behind. Islam has always encouraged its followers to be better educated to better themselves. Muslims women in Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei for example are free to do what they aspired to do but with limitation that goes with cultural norms. The thing is that they have more freedom in making decisions than their sisters in Pakistan or Saudi Arabia but that doesn't make them any less Islamic. When people say Islam oppresses women they are wrong. It's so happen that the culture that oppresses women is a culture of one or two muslims countries. This article don't speak for all muslim women.

Civilised & True_indian Why does'nt anyone talk about the Caste System in Hinduism. This is one of its kind. The Hindus are by virtue of their religion divided into 5 castes. The privileged ones are the Brahmins & the downtrodden are the Harijans (the untouchables)
The Harijans are treated worse than the animals. They are declared in Hindu religion as Achuths - untouchables. This is inhumane & the Western world & media never talk about it; or may be they do not think it is worth talking about. The treatment of the Hindu woman is no different, she too has to be empowered. The ones you see in the highly fantasized Indian movies have nothing to do with the masses. One has to admitt that the Hindu women has to fight their way out of Hindu radicalism & empower themselves; because their men folks will never do it as their religion does not allow it.

Muslims are you reading news everyday - A suicide bomber blew up a mosque in Iraq yesterday, a suicide bomber blew up a school in afganistan killing children, a suicide bomber blew up a police van in pakistan killing police, muslim terrorists open fire at railway stations in India, a suicide bomber blew up a hindu wedding in Kashmir, hamas sending rockets into Israel killing civilians, and on and on everyday. Something is seriously wrong with muslims, islam, and muslim governments and it should be fixed. Start acting normal and get over your religion

Manji is absolutely right. Muslin countries should first seperate their religion from state. States and Mullahs should stop imposing 7th century practices on their citizens and give them freedom to do whatever they want to do. Muslim countries should monitor mullahs preaching hatred and violence in mosques and should be punished. Muslim women should have freedom like their men. Muslim countries should respect other religions.

The two problems, as I see it from a far, is that there seems to be a double standard in the Muslim thinking. The fact that Muslim terrorists intentionally target innocent women and children does not engender outrage in the Muslim masses, but if the Israelis unintentionally kill the innocent civilians that the terrorists hide within, all Islam is outraged. Muslims willingly endorse sending rockets into Israel, but soundly reject Israel???s response.

The other problem, as I see it, is that we are not dealing on National level ??? we are trying to deal with a dogmatic religion from a national secular position. Considering that Islamic terrorists are killing other Muslims and those who are not Islamic as well leaves one to wonder ??? does a way exist?

I see no past history that would indicate, at least until some far distant future, that there is any way acceptable to the Muslims that can be taken by any or all non-Muslims to obtain a mutually accepted peace.

It will take along time for the Koran to be redefined into a more peaceful work of faith.

Manji also fails to highlight some of the many good things about Islam and the countries that are predominately Islamic.
In the west its ok to throw your 80 year old mother in a senior home and to forget about her. In muslim countries there is no such place as a senior home. The older people of muslim countries are a priority of each muslim household and older people live with thier familes. You never hear or see abadonment of older people like you read about daily in the USA. The parents and older people play a large role in the family until he or she dies and they are never marginalized like they are in the USA.
This is an example of how Islam treats people.

I have always believed that monotheistic religion has been the enemy of gays theroughout the world and throughout time. This is no different, a gay woman writing articles to "change Islam" . Why should it change? You will be dead and gone in 40 years, but Islam and the Quran will outlast you until the world ends one day whenever that happens. People will be using the paper of your articles and books for fireplace fodder or for the kitty litter box.

I have been to the small Pakistani villages and I have lived in those villages. I know how the women live there. In many ways they are the ones in control, their daughters attend nice schools, they have as much internet/educational resources as they would want, they control the household's money and they usually make major decisions. The husbands and the fathers NEVER make a decision without the wives, mothers or duaghters of the house. I have attended those mosques and I have listened to the sermons made by these local mullahs and never once was anything ever mentioned against a woman,. Manji you need to understand the Islam has designed protections for women and they are still in place today, however even in Pakistan many women travel without the Hijab, as it is a personal preference. .
Manji just wants Islam to accept her lifestyle. Manji claims to be a muslim so she can earn money for her "bulletproof" apartment. In a post 9/11 world Manji knows that the west likes to see supposed muslims attacking Islam and Manji is banking on that for her future earning power. I bet Manji and her girl pal werehappy on 9/11
