Positive Reflective Piece of Writing if woman can educate families then families will produce both male and females which in turn will produce the changes needed to provide a solution...yes women need to find and employ those educative mechanisms that will empower them to bring about those much needed changes of perceptions both from a religious standpoint as well as social standpoint. The morale responsibility that every woman has when holding a child in their arms to engender love, to ensure her family her husband included are safe and secure and indeed educated to accept change that these very basic desires will help in shaping a better world for those beloved children who`s perceptions are from the onset perceptions that engender innocence and vulnerability. Then the history of conflict should produce that first step in changing their perceptions and desires for everyone and so a better world for us all

Very Insightful article, well written, and just proves my point that women should be running the countries, not men. Men always look to war to solve things. Women resolves issues by talking and working things out.

malikrose, I understand your pointk, but from an outsiders view, Islamic law is VERY brutal, and while I personally know know nothing about it, it supposed to come from God, and he is a loving entity. I truly cannot believe that He would condone the brutality of stoneing women for any reason. Brutality is a man made condition, not from God. It is God's word taken to the etreme, and twisted to incite fear to keep the church followers in line. Definitely NOT what God intended.

    Onlinename,
I'm not challenging what you proposed but I don't agree with it. If the Western World finds burqas and hijabs degrading, then how degrading would it be to a woman when her husband demands a paternity test? It's bad enough divorce rates are rising here, children growing up in broken homes all around the world doesn't make for a very optimistic future.

    • Posted By: Onlinename @ 01/04/2009 10:33:48 AM

Thank you for your reply Nez123. I agree, the prospect of women being degraded by demands to demonstrate paternity, and the possibility that this could lead to broken families and perhaps even abandoned children is a very worrisome one. I don't have a simple way to address this concern, except that:

      1. The current prevalence of children being fathered by unidentified men is likely very low, particularly in the Moslem world. (though this is only my hunch.). I suspect that the prevalence of thoughts about this possibility lurking in the recesses of men's minds is hundreds if not thousands of times greater however. Such unspoken unaddressable thoughts may often the basis for men being untrusting, hateful, and hurtful towards their wives. More often than not paternity testing (or even the option of getting it done) would relieve the underlying anxiety that torments these men, and thereby improve family life.
      2. In a community where there is easily-accessible paternity testing this rate would no doubt shrink even further, to the point of being truly miniscule
      3. Most instances of children being fathered by unidentified men would likely remain undiscovered, even if such testing were available, as: A. most men are not interested in humiliating their wives, and B. while the question of paternity may enter the minds of some men, they will often realize that it's better not to know than to know.
      4. In the West, there is a rather low frequency of critical family disruption due specifically to surprising results coming from paternity testing, particularly disruption to the point of child abandonment.

      Best,
      Onlinename

With the American economy in a mess I hardly believe we will be shelling out more cash for a muslim bailout. Charity starts at home and at the moment the US can't take care of their own. We should not be sending ANY money to ANY country that is not a true allie to the US. No more free handouts to countries that wish us harm.In fact, I believe we should cut off ALL foriegn aid untill the US can take care of its own people first. Why keep having babies when you can't afford them? I would of liked to have had more children, however I had what I know I could support which was 2. Of course, I live in the us where I have the freedom to do that. Women have fought long and hard to get where they are today here in the US and we did it without anyone elses help and muslim women will have to do the same.

The question of the treatment of women in Islam is Islam's Achilles' heel so to say. The reason is that the Koran and Muhammad support the denigration, contempt for and the suppression if gender equality. To push for gender equality, as we know it in the West, is to contradict the injunctions of the Koran and Muhammad. If Islam's sacred texts were openly contradicted for the sake of gender equality, the whole Islamic theological edifice would come crashing down. After all, if it becomes O.K. to criticize the Koran and Muhammad for this one question, then their sacrosanct status us undermined for all questions. That is why the Islamic religious authorities can never agree to gender equality. That one of the reasons why not a single Moslem country has accepted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which clearly demands gender equality. Here are just a few of the sacred passages from the Koran and Muhammad about women:
    KORAN:
-- Women are your fields: go, then, into your fields whence you please. (2:223)

-- Men have authority over women because God has made the one superior to the other... Good women are obedient. As for those from whom you fear disobedience, admonish them, forsake them in beds apart, and beat them.??? (4:34)
    MUHAMMAD:
O, Women! Give alms, as I have seen that the majority of the dwellers of Hell were you (women). You curse frequently and are ungrateful to your husbands. I have not seen anyone more deficient in intelligence and religion than you... (Bukhari v.1,bk 6, no.4)
Mohammed asked some women, "Isn't the witness of a woman equal to half that of a man?" The women said, "yes," He said, "This is because of the deficiency of the woman's mind. " Vol. 3:826
Mohammed to women: "I have not seen any one more deficient in intelligence and religion than you." Vol. 2:541

Mohammed said, "I was shown the Hell-fire and that the majority of its
    dwellers are women. " Vol. 1:28, 301; Vol. 2:161; Vol. 7:124

Mohammed married a 6 year old girl when he was 49. He had sex with her when she was 9 and he was 52. "Narrated Aisha that the prophet married her when she was six years old and he consummated his marriage when she was nine years old."Vol. 7:64 [Note: Muhammad was then 52 years old!]

Does Islam speak about child molesters? Just curious.

Irshad Manji, please speak for yourself and not for Islam or Muslims. Just the title of this article alone is offensive to me as a muslim. All muslims need continuous improvemnt like any other people, but Islam is eternal. That is the premise of the Islamic faith. If you don't know that much then please dont misinform people in this subject.

For those imbeciles who proudly proclaim that 'Islam needs no fixing', hear this clear- Iam least bothered whether the philosophy of Islam is right or wrong. What Iam bothered about is the fact that 90% of the violence across the globe is fuelled by Islam. Now that clearly affects the life of millions from 9/11 victims to the recent mumbai attack victims. Why dont you boneheads at least acknowledge that there is problem with your religion??It does not require indepth analysis to figure out that muslims cant coexist with any other religion or in a society where they are the minority.Stop blaming others for problem in middle east. As someone rightly said- If hamas give up their weapons there will be peace, if Israel give up their weapons, the will be annihilated. In spite of having decent muslim friends, Iam starting to hate Islam in its current form for fomenting trouble and its inability to reform itself and I guess millions of reasonable minds have reached same conclusion. Just my fantasy..Someone should develope a gene chip to analyse extremist tendencies among muslims and come up with some sort of smart weapon to selectively eradicate such folks :) .Guess 80% of the muslims will disappear if that was to happen..Dang, now Iam thinking like a muslim, a 'sophisticated muslim' sheesh !!!!

Anti matter010, let me correct you once for all, All the problems the world is fcaing today are created by America, the worst terrorist organization is CIA. Everywhere in the world whenever there is any problem, CIA is directly or indierectly behind it, from killing it's own people (US Citizens 0n 9/11) to killing of the foreign head of states. To killing of Palastinians. The war on terror is byitself a greatest terror plot orcharasterated by FANATIC, FUNDAMENTAL AND EXTREMIST CHRISTIANS like BUSH< CHENNEY & CO. All the facts and reports of independant observers throughout the world have agreed that concluded that 9/11 was planned and carried out by CIA in collaboration with Mosad.
In spite of these facts if someone still thinks that 9/11 was carriedout by Muslims or any other group lives in fools paradise.

Do you have any documented evidence to back up your assertion that 90% of worldwide violence is fueled by Islam? Did WW1, or WW2, or the Korean War, Vietnam war, the Cold War, the Afghan-Soviet conflict, etc, were these all fueled by "Islam" or the "Muslims" ?

Do you have any familiarity with how Muslims and other non-Western non-Muslims view America and her religion of "democracy"? Have you ever thought about why the Chinese or the Serbs hate America? Have you ever thought of why so many other people in the world - including hundreds of millions of non-Muslims, see America as a major threat to world peace?

Drop your xenophobic and ethnocentric views and think outside that box which you've self-imposed upon yourself. Otherwise you'll simply be a hate-monger who is part of the problem, and not the solution.

Can't say that I agree with all of your post, but I would love to see that gene chip developed. Think we all would be best served if it were to come up with a "smart weapon" that would work on all peoples of the world. Maybe we could alter behavior genetically and get rid of all types of extremism.

    TheGardener,
I think it's hypocritical of you to call Muslim men immature. In my opinion, it's immature of you not to realize that one sixth of the world's population, that's over one billion people, CANNOT all be "taken for a ride". It's the same concept as going to war with a country. Each country has it's reasons for fighting, each side thinks they are just and each soldier out there has a reason to be where they are. That applies to understanding other religions as well. Regardless of all the issues people may see with a religion, every person has a reason to follow what they follow and believe what they do.

"Islamic law can be brutal; no amount of cultural theorizing erases this fact. But as a faithful, feminist Muslim, I know that seventh-century cruelty is not inevitable in the 21st century."
The writer of this article is either a dreamer or an ignorant to the true nature of Islam.

"To Fix Islam, Start From the Inside: The best way to fight radicalism is to empower Muslim women worldwide."
That would mean To Change the Quran and All the Laws.
The Islamic Males are too immature and submissive to analyze their horrific mental state of mind and slavery to an ideology that is a complete hoax. Nobody likes to admit they are being taken for a ride. However that would have to be the first realization.

Islam is a political party with a god-belief and an insult to human dignity.

I am about to write something somewhat tongue-in-cheek which might also have a grain of truth. I will then make a proposal.

I've taken the liberty of playing anthropologist (which I am not), and attempted to understand in the most fundamental and universal terms the sorts of constraints traditional Islam appears to put on the lives of women. My conclusion is that many of these constraints, ostensibly to protect women's "virtue" and family "honor" are ultimately aimed at protecting the capacity to determine the paternity of children. I suspect that this conclusion may actually be a no-brainer for most anthropologists, though I welcome the comment of any fully trained anthropologists out there. There's nothing necessarily wrong with wanting to know a child's paternity. It is a concern that derives immediately from core evolutionarily inspired drives shared by all people. However it is an artifact of history and economy that has left so many women in the Moslem world so thwarted in their worldly aspirations. Specifically, the artifact may relate to the nomadic and herding economy of the ancient Middle East, and of Arabia in particular, that required that men leave their wives alone in their isolated homes for extended periods of time. It is not entirely surprising that in such a socioeconomic environment unusual social customs would develop that reflected the specific challenges there to ensuring and demonstrating paternity.

Let's suppose then that the underlying barrier to the liberation of Moslem women is a persistent, historically driven, deep-seated, barely conscious concern on the part of Moslem men that they are at risk of unwittingly raising the children of other men. What would then be the surest, fastest way to shift the social dynamics that constrain Moslem women? The answer may be as simple as providing inexpensive reliable paternity testing throughout the Moslem world. There would be no more need for burqas, no need for male family members to be escorting, or rather guarding, all fertile Moslem women whenever they may want to venture outside the home, no need for restrictions on the casual, business, and educational interactions that would otherwise be quite natural between men and women. With both women and men knowing that the paternity of every child would (or could) be determined with ease, women would be duly motivated to avoid illicit sex, as would be their potential lovers. Would be rapists as well would recognize an additional risk. Just as the advent of reliable birth control changed the nature of sexual and family relations in the West, and ultimately the economic status of Western women, so might something as technical and as mundane as reliable and inexpensive paternity testing might cause an unwitting but quite positive shift in the social and economic status of women in the Middle East.

Crazy idea???? Or the seed of something wonderful?

The CIA is the biggest monster that needs serious containing. It seems to elect itself in every arising conflict and exercises powers beyond what is requested of them. Remember, this was the reason RFK was not on good terms with the CIA and it is thought that the CIA was involved in his and his brother, John's assassinations.
Anyway, perhaps the CIA ought to gather some useful information, like how the world feels about what the American administration is doing globally.
For the record, Islam does not need any fixing; those that poison it with their own political and social agendas are the ones in need of fixing.

The first paragragh of this article is so offensive that unfortunately the whole article was lost on me. This is not good writing style to get opinions across! U.S. moral authority in the Islamic world -- give me a break! Many americans can't even spell the word moral. Besides, establishing moral authority in the Islamic world is the job of muslims, muslim feminists like yourself (article author) and NOT that of the US President. In sum, I agree with GeorgeC_74, but with slightly less abrasive language.

Before I state my opinion, I would like to say that I was born and raised in the Catholic Faith. It is true that I do not practice said faith anymore, however, once you have been trained in a faith, it is hard to disregard its teachings. Irshad Manji???s article is a very thought-out suggestion to the problems engrained in radicalism, and for the comments I???ve seen posted, radicalism is a two way street. Before anyone criticizes her religion and her conclusions in this article, one should not forget ???The Crusades???: which were a series of religion-driven military campaigns done by Christina Europe against external and internal opponents of the Christian religion.
