Typical for Newsweek to be back pedaling for the liberals so quickly, now that Obama is elected it is time to lower the expectations, even though he promised to do everything for everyone during the election. At least Newsweek stays true to your real liberal roots!!!!!!!!!

NewsWeak is part of a large organized effort, yo indtroduce socialism to America. They truly think it is a kinder and gentler form of Govt. It is also a form of mental illness. We will all soon feel the fruit of their efforts...and it won't be fun......

OK, my vote is for Obamas nomination victory speech in St Paul MN June 3, 2008. Its not clear from this quote if he had just been nominated Messiah or the democratic candidate for president. ???I am absolutely certain that generations from now, we will be able to look back and tell our children that this was the moment when we began to provide care for the sick and good jobs to the jobless; this was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal; this was the moment when we ended a war and secured our nation and restored our image as the last, best hope on Earth. This was the moment - this was the time - when we came together to remake this great nation so that it may always reflect our very best selves, and our highest ideals.???

RaisedByWolves, you are truly delusional about your understanding of Obama. You likely are walking around with a radio glued to your ear looped to right-wing hate radio and propaganda. Such commentary as your's has likely come from the fringe, far-right, looney Ann Coulter/Limbaugh wing of the Republican party.

What never ceases to amaze me is the neverending naivete of the American voting public. Each presidential election cycle the contenders from the major political parties in this country make promises that no mortal human could hope to fulfill and we (the voting public) cast our lot for the one we feel will best deliver on predetermined failure. The founders of our nation, in all their divinely inspired wisdom, saw fit to divy up the available governmental powers so that no one person would have the sole ability to either giveth or taketh away. Personally, I feel that President-elect Obama is going to find himself so much under the proverbial microscope, that after four years he will probably be more than willing to return to private life regardless of the outcome of his administration. Perhaps it is not the incoming President who should lower expectations, rather we as a nation should lower our expectations to a more practical level and perhaps we could begin to elect some public servants at all levels who are more in touch we as a nation need to do to survive and progressively prosper.
Or we could just anoint King Obama and let the chips fall where they may!

    • Posted By: lisarae38 @ 01/03/2009 7:49:36 PM

The chips are going to fall where they may, regardless of who is dealing the cards. The fix it fairy is not driving the bus, she is being a grandma to her new grandson, born out of wedlock (isn't that against the Republican doctrine?) There is no simple solution and regardless of who is driving this bus, we are in for the ride of our lives! Buckle up!

    • Posted By: 40YearR @ 01/03/2009 7:40:06 PM

Well, we can see clearly where you're coming from. It might help you if you read his books. From what I've seen, the man has way too much fortitude to want to go home in four years. Castigations like yours affected him not at all during the election. They are unkely to be any more effective in the future.

  • Posted By: mrboast @ 01/03/2009 7:02:40 PM

HA! Newsweek never ceases to amaze me! After raising his expectations without tire, now they advise him to lower them...what a crock.

    • Posted By: lisarae38 @ 01/03/2009 7:17:54 PM

You people just have to blame someone dont you? If you dont like Newsweeks representation of the issues of our society, why are you on this website at all? Doesn't FOX have some bitchblog you can all join? The entire government, both R's and D's are responsible for the disgrace our nation is facing. Now...the entire government needs to step up to the plate, be accountable, and DEAL WITH IT!

Disgusting...the guy got elected on the expectations he created on his own and the myths the media perpetrated (hope! Change! Parting the waters!). Now we want to lower expectations? Looks like we got duped people. We may as well have elected Clinton.

    • Posted By: roy12560 @ 01/03/2009 6:06:53 PM

Can we establish a fact point here and now.
To the many bloggers who state the media and or Obama proclaimed in anyway "to part waters" "calm the sea" "brighten the sun" or promoted similar representations. You are completely biased against Obama, devoid of any factual basis, wildeyed, schizoid, paranoid, delusional and have completely lost a grip on reality.

  • Posted By: Charlie Horse @ 01/03/2009 3:26:16 PM

Harleyboy, keep in mind that this HUGE ASS KICKING you keep yacking about( rudely I'll add), has been the product of a 5%, (five percent,) swing in the voting history of the electorate. I'm hoping that BO truly can make the "Oceans Receed" and the sun to shine brighter, but nation has not suddenly become united, there is still 47% of Americans who oppose his plans, and we will reorganize to become more effective in the comming elections, have no doubt.

    • Posted By: renojmc @ 01/03/2009 4:50:22 PM

I don't want him to fail, bit I also don't want him to succeed with his liberal agenda. I don't trust his judgement because they are often in conflict with Biblical principles. It's that simple. When a man chooses to follow his own "wisdom" rather than God's word, I will not support him.

      • Posted By: 40YearR @ 01/03/2009 7:43:03 PM

Which Biblical principles, pray tell? Might they be the ones that caused Bush to disregard his experienced advisers about Iraq?

      • Posted By: Pia1981 @ 01/03/2009 7:28:24 PM

You don't want him to fail, yet you don't want him to succeed either. What do you want?

      • Posted By: roy12560 @ 01/03/2009 6:01:04 PM

Charlie Horse where do you get your statistics. "47 percent who oppose" Obama's plans. What are you basing that on, the election? Are you making a fool out of yourself by pretending all those who voted against Obama are now against his plans?
Recent polls show I believe more than 70 percent of Americans are behind Obama. Only the far right wingnuts or Bushie/McCainiac sore losers are opposed to him. Can we establish a rule prohibiting the posting of baseless and fact-starved total BS like the misinformation, total lies and propaganda attempted to be spread by Charlie Horse.

        • Posted By: Charlie Horse @ 01/03/2009 6:40:51 PM

        • Posted By: Charlie Horse @ 01/03/2009 6:36:25 PM

Just got back from my real life, excuse my late reply to your comments. I'll make it clear for you. I did not vote for BO cause I see him as an empty suit, but I, along with 70% of the folks, now wish him well. He is #1 now, the guy with his hand on the helm. To not support the sitting President is not what I do, compared to the screaming and hatred that has greeted GW since the last hanging chad in Florida, and continues till today. 47% of the electorate did NOT vote for him, but 70% wish him well. What does that say for the folks you refer to as "sore losers"? It means we are willing to hope for his success, not failure. This is my country too Harley, and I will work to organize a respectful opposition, suggest conservative solutions, and know that the Conservative half of this country will prevail, much to your foul and hateful displeasure, at some point in time.

If you show fear, they'll turn on ya.

      • Posted By: lisarae38 @ 01/03/2009 5:22:32 PM

Well your religious beliefs and perceptions are yours too. If you think about it, the terrorists are radical bible thumpers too, they just happen to read a different bible. In the United States, I am not allowed to openly practice my faith anyways, as some might see it as "offensive". This isn't about religion, this is about survival of a nation! OURS!!!

    • Posted By: lisarae38 @ 01/03/2009 4:27:09 PM

Such a shame that so many "Americans" are hoping for the failure of Barack Obama. Your negativity is shameless. I did not support John McCain, even before he brought Barbie on board, but had he managed to win the house, I certainly would have at the very least, respected his authority and judgement. Speaking of judgement, isnt his why he lost the race? You people who are sitting around waiting for the failure of Obama, just remember he represents the United States. Like that or not, that is your reality. His failure, is yours! Get yourself out of potty mode and stand up for and support our country. Your "re-organization" is too late, have you not noticed the United States is in a crisis?

Having gone to see what posters had to say first, I thought some of the criticisms might have actually related to this article. I don't see any of the things Fineman actually said as a basis for the typically virulent complaints and accusations about bias, etc. Each of Fineman's points seemed cogent, insightful and on target to me.

The circumstances we are in impel me to not have high expectations about substantive things that might be accomplished. The Bush administration is not responsible for all the reasons, but it is for most of them.

My expectations about Obama's capabilities, wisdom, judgment, clear focus, intellectual intergrity and integrity of principle have only been raised by what I have seen him do since the election.

Btw, having voted for Bush twice, I feel a sort of entitlement to hold him responsible for what he is...

    • Posted By: lisarae38 @ 01/03/2009 6:16:30 PM

Yes, I will admit to getting very sidetracked! Fineman has some very legit concerns re: the expectations of the Obama campaign. Is it fair to blame those expectations on Obama, or anyone else for that matter? If Obama's "expectations" were lower, those who hope for his failure would be crying about his inability to take on this game of hard ball. He would be accused of being inexperienced, and naive. McCain promised to do the same things, only he claimed his stratedgy was much better, even though he admitted early in his campaign that Economics was NOT his strong point. He of course couldn't give a clear picture of that stratedgy, just to say that he was smarter, more experience, and of course he was a POW, so that certainly made him more capable. How was his POW experience going to balance Americas budget, create jobs, feed the hungry, end the housing crisis, end the sensless war in the Middle East, (oh ya, he didn't want that to end) and bring an end to illegal immigration? Just how could he handle it better? Besided being able to see Russia from her front yard, and stimulating the economy with donated money, what was Palin going to do to maintain the "expectations" of the United States and its citizens?

I have enjoyed and agreed with your other posts, and find myself doing that again. :-)

  • Posted By: indysk90 @ 01/03/2009 4:16:33 PM

Should be interesting to see Hope and Change formally meeting Reality. Despite the author's caveats, Obama himself set the bar as high as it is and he should be held accountable for the results. Mainstream media and the entertainment industry helped propel him into office and will undoubtably develop high- octane Obama apologetics. We'll almost certainly be hearing much from the aforementioned camps about patience and realistic standards. If the guy can accomplish his own goals, fine but if he isn't up to the job, there will be another hiring opportunity for the electorate in four years.

    • Posted By: 40YearR @ 01/03/2009 7:18:03 PM

Please go and look at Harley's posts about where Obama set the bar high. Surely you don't think Obama should be held accountable for fixing in four years all the things that it took the biggest F'up in history eight years to mess up, do you?

  • Posted By: Jaray24 @ 01/03/2009 12:00:37 PM

The media is having the "honeymoon" before the "wedding". It will be interesting to see how the meida will go against him when he is unable to "change" the greed, irresponsibility, and corruption in this country. By this time next year, Obama will not be able to change this country, and if by a small chance things do change, it won't be because of him alone.

    • Posted By: renojmc @ 01/03/2009 12:07:06 PM

If things do change for the better, it will be in spite of him.

all the remedies so far by the government to stimulate the economy was to lower the cost of lending to no effect. why not not try to cut all the taxes we pay in half and all elected officials to forego their salaries. anyway, their purpose in running for public office is to serve the public. that means when they ran for the office, they are made already a la bloomberg

    • Posted By: 40YearR @ 01/03/2009 6:56:33 PM

If we cut taxes in half, how will we pay that Iraq invasion tab Bush left for us, or for all the money he just gave away to those financial 'institutions' that took us down the drain?

It is simply amazing what name calling, insults and courage is shown from the anonymity of posting. When faced with a physical being right in front of us civility seems to come into existance...or perhaps a health dose of fear. After all, freedom o speach is freedom from PRIOR restraint. Nowhere does it claim freedom from consequences. In these posts there are no consequences, so I see no reason to respect the sincerity or depth of the commentors' convictions. Many would not dare to say these things face to face or even if their true identity were known. I thing of it as cowardly courage. Thank goodness there are those who can argue policy and point of view in their posts as well as they would in a face to face debate. Fore those people I am truly thankful.

I have always elt Obama was a big bag of wind in an empty suit that was using children and blacks to get elected, promising the sky just so he got elected. Pure politician to the bone but poor presedential material. Sadly, it takes a glib politiician to get elected in this country. That is why we have so many poor presidents. We don't look for presendential material, we look at how well they can make us believe the fairy tales they stuff into our feather brains. We deserve what we get because it is what we ask for!!

  • Posted By: Chicago48 @ 01/03/2009 1:29:50 PM

I wholeheartedly agree with this assessment. I voted for O and he has some lofty ideas; however, having been in the Senate he knows how sluggish it is, and that's why he's trying to bypass it with czars. A smart move. He has to hit the ground running and get his programs off right away. I don't believe the stimulus package will be much help, because Americans are scared. They are holding tight to their money and being very cautious. Don't expect the consumer to pull the country out of a recession.

    • Posted By: 40YearR @ 01/03/2009 6:48:22 PM

Yup, and most of the top economists are saying that the additional money in circulation due to that stimulus will not come close to the money out of the system due to unemployment, etc. Gots to do what we can though...

Or so, you'd prefer to have Bush in for another eight years. McCain and Palin maybe? Please attempt to substantiate your claims of "blind ignorance," "danger to our children." etc.
Just what is it that is so vapid about believing in the hope and power-of-good-in-people politics of Obama, rather than the demonstrated fear, hate, divisive and fatalism, child-poverty-supporting and every-man-and-woman-for themselves politics of Republicans?

Please put me in that company too. Belatedly is ok.

I don't recall claiming to be an intellectual elite! I will claim to be informed, and yes I have put my faith in our new President, for that, I am proud. Im not sure where your children are, but mine is in the United States Army waiting for orders to go kill or be killed in a war that never should have started. Thank you George W. Bush for sacrificing my child. The Republican party is dangerous to your children! This party is so anti-abortion, yet so willing to invade foreign countries and kill thousands of men, women, and children....and you call me delusional? OK, somebody has to take the blame. Im willing.

Thank you for sharing this, lisarae. I hope and pray for your son.

Thank you for your prayers, they are kept in my heart along with the faith that Obama will end this tragic war and the senseless loss of human life will end!

Many of us mourn for the lost and injured. We are proud of their patriotism, and are grateful like you that a wiser man will soon be President.

After reading your comments again, I conclude that you are def. the one who is delusional and vapid and bitter.

    • Posted By: Pia1981 @ 01/03/2009 12:27:37 PM

Not nice. Singling out and calling people stupid because we support our candidate who won by a landslide. We're not stupid and you are rude and a sore loser. Notice I did not call you stupid.

Name calling is another example of loweried standards. If you can't think of intelligent debate, stick with what you know.

I agree. Just think of how high Bush's ratings would be if the media would lower their expectations of him over the years. Just another way of knowing that the media is liberial, sells stories not the truth.

FIXING THE FUTURE REQUIRES ACKNOWLEDGING THE PAST

What did we do for twenty years?

Fineman is a joke. Obama promised the world in order to get elected. 50% of the population are idealists and living in la la land. Obama will be a huge failure, and the unrealistic expectations are his and the liberal MSM's doing. Sorry, no going back on your promises, you are held accountable.

At least now Republicans can stop blaming Clinton for all the myriad disasters of the Bush administration. They'll blame Obama for anything bad that happens on January 21.

      • Posted By: 40YearR @ 01/03/2009 5:29:01 PM

        They're blaming him already.
