    Good grief!

The kooks are crawling out of the woodwork!

Obama has his work cut out for him. Not the least of which, it seems, will be to run the gauntlet of people like some of those who have commented here.

Totalitarian marxism? European-American Homeland? Liberal media? What planet do you come from?

Government has to grow in some areas -- it was the lack of oversight that got us into this economic mess. I expect to see the rich pay more taxes, and the middle class pay less. I expect to see the corporations that have been allowed to call the economic shots reined in. I expect attention to be paid to educational and medical access for all. And I expect to see change -- for the better.

I hope Obama does not lower his expectations. As a colleague if mine is fond of saying, "Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars."

Excellent comments! I especially love the "shoot for the moon... land among the stars!" Perfect.

One of few comments reading on this entire board. What Obama understands is the common sense and human nature that if you think you want improvement, and map the steps to get there, you can indeed make change. But, if like the author of this article, you dwell in doom and fatalistic thoughts, "it just cannot ever work", then it never will.

        • Posted By: Pia1981 @ 01/03/2009 10:53:36 AM

Just like Morrigan, your comment reads well too.

          • Posted By: roy12560 @ 01/03/2009 11:40:55 AM

I agree Pia, my comment was not well-stated. I meant to say, one of the comments WORTH reading on this entire board is from Morrigan. If you think positive and map out positive steps, you can indeed bring about change. If, on the other hand, like Newsweek's pathetic commentator, instead dwell in fatalism and hopelessness, no change can happen and things can only get worse.

roy- sorry, I think you misunderstood me. I know what you meant and I agree and your comment about morrigan was well stated.

Lower expectations? Heck why even come back fro Hawaii? Why even pretend to be President. Lower expectations. Wow - this from the man who chastised and criticized George Bush at every turn for every single one of Bush's decisions? No way. Obama was voted in because he promised, with his Harvard degree (for what that's really worth) that he had SOLUTIONS to problems, not low expectations.

I am incensed and sickened that that is all it takes - a dem opporunistic to do - lower his own expectations - before he even takes office. Way to lie to us allm OIbama and Biden - and well main stream media. Way to LIE. And lower OUR own expectations as to you all - forevermore now.

    Disgusting.

Both the Democrats (Wilson & FDR) and the Republicans (Reagan, the Bushes) have destroyed this country in a way that is almost irrecoverable. The American Dream has been a mirage for almost 100 years. If it finally slips away, then maybe the American people will finally WAKE UP!!! In the meantime we'll continue to pile on government debt, and provide "tax relief" to keep this mirage alive at the price of our children's children.

  • Posted By: Dolmance @ 01/03/2009 10:35:28 AM

The more the Republicans obstruct, the more hated they're going to be. And then we'll have to fight the Civil War all over again, only this time it will be with politics as opposed to bullets. And if we have to, we'll burn Old Dixie down again. Just like last time. Go Yankees!!!

    • Posted By: mrsmwp @ 01/03/2009 12:22:03 PM

Don't be so smug Dolmance. Last time the North was better armed than the South. You liberal weenies on the coasts don't have the guns. The conservatives in flyover country have the guns.

  • Posted By: TruthandConsequence @ 01/03/2009 11:10:05 AM

Obama is more practiced at running for office than being in office. He loves the attention and not the responsibility. He will soon begin to fidget and run for Captain Universe.

    • Posted By: lisarae38 @ 01/03/2009 12:19:55 PM

Well it sounds like your a little bent about the election! Too bad McCain was too busy "suspending" his campaign to run off and fix Wallstreet (which he also failed at) and Palin was too busy shopping as opposed to brushing up her knowledge of the United States. They might have had a chance.....NOT! Those two should join the circus!

This essay is pessimistic trash. The exact type of fatalistic and negative thinking that could forestall an economic recovery and a better future for America after eight years of the disasterous Bush Administration. The author smugly believes he has a better handle on the political winds in Washington than does the president-elect and his new administration. The author does not and sounds like a fool. What the author overlooks is the reason Obama was elected was due to a belief, worth lending credibility to, that he has the ability to unlock congressional gridlock, try new things, and instill optimism and hope in the government in the average citizen to better themselves, and in turn, the entire country.
We have enough doomsayers without the media chiming in. We can use this article to line the dog cage, but even dog sh-- deserves better.

    • Posted By: TruthandConsequence @ 01/03/2009 11:33:34 AM

There are no greater doomsayers, than the well practiced anti-Bush nonsense which comes from the lips of Obamacrats. You folks are amazing. You spend the better part of eight years complaining and now think complaining is out of vogue and we all just need "to come together." bah!

      • Posted By: roy12560 @ 01/03/2009 12:16:41 PM

As I stated in earlier posts on this board, it was Bush himself and his administration who gave the country several reasons to complain about. Don't blame the media. Blame Bush. If Obama makes mistakes, we can complain about Obama as well.
But let's not yet extrapolate the cynicism and negativity generated by eight failed years of Bush onto Obama, who in both words and deeds, represents something radically different than what Bush has ever represented, and who also instills both hope and optimism the majority of Americans could never fathom from Bush.

"Famous Aloha spirit"? Give me an indication of that, Howard. The guy is a closed, tightly guarded book. You are supposed to be a journalist and I bet you don't know who his real, closest freinds are. Or you do and don't want the to help the American people find out. You really need to get over the perception that all the American people are stupid and don't see through your propaganda. The half that voted for Obama doesn't read commentary.

    • Posted By: Pia1981 @ 01/03/2009 11:12:03 AM

Interesting username, peacenpropserity. Forgive me if you think me rude, but I have to ask, what does "propserity" mean?

      • Posted By: lisarae38 @ 01/03/2009 12:07:53 PM

See what I mean about "lowering expectation"? This is what happened when it was decided that education in America was a good target for destruction. And to answer the question you have asked, I think that is republican for IGNORANT!

  • Posted By: A New York fan @ 01/03/2009 10:39:01 AM

DHL33 are you on drugs Obama is no differnet then what we hve had a man with limited experience and an aganda he can never meet. I cringe listening to Obama's promisses of saving the world when after how many years in the Illinois State house and the US Senate he has so far done nothing. More empty promises make me cringe, nothing will ever change until the Congress and Senate are taken to task for allowing our present problems tohappen without having the intelligence to see it coming and Obama is not the answer.

    • Posted By: Pia1981 @ 01/03/2009 10:48:39 AM

Please post evidence of where and when Pres. elect Obama made a promise to "save the world". Thank you

      • Posted By: roy12560 @ 01/03/2009 11:26:41 AM

And while DHL33 is at it, please post links demonstrating that Obama "has done nothing" as a state and US Senator. Many objective commentary websites such as factcheck.org and politifact.org have provided several specific examples of Obama's accomplishments as a legislator in responds to claims he accomplished nothing. Go to those websites and look for yourself, seek out objective information, before making spurious baseless claims you heard from right-wing propaganda sources such as FAUX News or Rush Limbaugh.

It was indeed meant for New York fan. Sorry about that.

  • Posted By: underdog @ 01/03/2009 11:57:48 AM

Lower expectations? We should be raising expectations. The media wanted this guy in and they got it. Now is not the time to start back peddeling or making excuses. Obama made promises during his campaign without quantifiers. There was no " I will this, but," or "unless this happens". Well, now is his time to deliver. No excuses!

    • Posted By: Jaray24 @ 01/03/2009 12:02:35 PM

Just remember the media is in the business of selling stories, not the truth.

  • Posted By: renojmc @ 01/03/2009 11:57:05 AM

Pathetic, pandering of the looney left media. Leave it to Fineman and Newsweak to publish such garbage.

  • Posted By: peacenpropserity @ 01/03/2009 11:13:05 AM

The "famous Aloha spirit"? Where are there any indications of that, Howard. Obama is a closed, very tightly guarded book. You're a "journalist" and Bet you couldn't tell us who his real, closest friends are or are participating in the cover up to keep Americans in the dark. You need to get over your fantasy that most Americans outside of Washington are stupid. Half of Americans see through your thinly veiled propaganda and the other half, Gore/Kerry/Obama voters, don't read commentary.

    • Posted By: lisarae38 @ 01/03/2009 11:37:47 AM

What an ignorant thing to say. Wander on down to your local Walmart and purchase his open book, it's called "Audacity of Hope". A very open, insightful, and compelling piece of work from a brilliant man who had all the cards against him. This book published in 2006 describes exactly what is wrong in our society TODAY! Tell me, why didn't all those Einsteins in Washington see this fiasco coming when Obama did? Of course President Obama is not going to be able to save the world in 30 days, that is only possible by God. However, he has a brilliant mind, a positive spirit, and the courage to take on the world at it's lowest level in written history. One thing to be thankful for.... McCain and Palin are at home resting peacefully!

      • Posted By: Pia1981 @ 01/03/2009 11:41:04 AM

Excellent! I see the intelligent people have joined the discussion. What a relief!

        • Posted By: lisarae38 @ 01/03/2009 11:56:47 AM

Hell ya! Im proud to be an Obamacrat! The notion that Obama "lower expectations" is pathetic! If we continue to lower our expectations, in addition to our willingness to be held accountable for our ridiculous international behavior, at some point, we will end up back in the caves with the dinasours. Lowering the bar isn't going to fix anything. The only thing that might solve is allowing ignorant people to be given the false illusion that we have been successful in our mission. A good example...when McCain indicated that our "economy was strong" .

  • Posted By: manapp99 @ 01/03/2009 11:53:52 AM

Look up platitude in the dictionary and you will find the phrase "audacity of hope" and a picture of Obama. He got elected by providing very little specifics about what he will do as president and has provided precious few during the transition. Asked about specifics by reporters and he responds "my team is working on specifics" or "there is only one president at a time". Pretty soon the time for talk will be through and we will get to see if he has a walk to walk.

  • Posted By: DLH33 @ 01/03/2009 10:30:50 AM

Yes, expectations are high for Obama. However I personally am just looking forward to having a President
that I can watch and listen to without cringing. After the last 8 years it is like Spring is finally blooming for the
United States after a very long and cold winter.

    • Posted By: roy12560 @ 01/03/2009 11:53:29 AM

Yeah. We now have a serious president who will not have videos of most every public presentation suitable for "Americas Funniest Home Videos." The other night my family and I were at a restaurant while America's Home Videos was playing on the wall television sets. This prompted us all to engage in some really hard laughter to tears as we recalled our favorite videos of Bush far funnier than what was playing on the televisions.

  • Posted By: TruthandConsequence @ 01/03/2009 11:23:02 AM

Obama really does suffer from illusions of grandeur and Obamacrats helped lift his psychosis. Where there is little substance, what goes up surely comes down. It will be unhappy to watch.

    • Posted By: Pia1981 @ 01/03/2009 11:27:47 AM

Link for proof to your claim ,please. I have requested a couple already, but so far nothing. Why would that be?

      • Posted By: TruthandConsequence @ 01/03/2009 11:40:29 AM

Well, now, lets see. What goes up, must come down is a matter of physics. As for Obama - a man who runs for election every two years or so and receives so much more succor from adoration than service - as suggested by his record. If past is prologue, Obama does not hold nearly the promise he surrounds himself with.

        • Posted By: Pia1981 @ 01/03/2009 11:49:03 AM

Well, Mr. or Ms. Truth, thanks for your reply...appreciate it.....HOWEVER...you still have not posted any proof to your claims that Obama suffers from "illusions of grandeur and we Obamacrats helped lift his psychosis!" No proof/link=fabrication.

  • Posted By: manapp99 @ 01/03/2009 11:48:49 AM

Look up platitude in the dictionary and you will find the phrase "audacity of hope" and a picture of Obama. He ran a campaign with very little specifics and contiunes to provide little today. Soon the time for talk will be behind him and we will finally get to see if he has any.

  • Posted By: wilsan @ 01/03/2009 11:47:56 AM

Here is the Tank Media at it's best.

Newsweak (and others) got Obama elected by delivering slanted, biased news, promising everyone everything - and now "they have to deliver"...

So now what do they do? Start lowering expectations, of course. Perhaps the junior Senator from Cook County, Chicago is not so grand after all? Newsweak has no confidence in their man?

One thing we can be certain of, we will NEVER get the truth from Newsweak about Obama. They will continue their lying, slanted, biased news to protect their man, until the bottom falls out. Fineman is not a very fine man.

  • Posted By: Pia1981 @ 01/03/2009 12:27:06 AM

Pres. elect Obama is a realist. He never promised us the moon but he will do what he can and that is sufficient for me.

    • Posted By: Bama Bevos @ 01/03/2009 11:16:15 AM

That's right! He is a realist, and that is what we need leading our country right now. And we don't need reporters like Fineman telling him to back up or back off. And I sent him an e-mail to that effect. GO OBAMA GO AND DON'T SLOW DOWN!!!!!

      • Posted By: Pia1981 @ 01/03/2009 11:31:01 AM

Good comment, Bama Bevos! See, you stuck around.

Obama won and won big. Accept it and move on. Not healthy to brood on your party's big losses.

I accept the compliment that Obama's win was my fault.Thanx.

"if you want to lower expectations, there is no better way to do it than to talk about the Palestinian issue." What about the Israel issue? They are occupying land that they violently took from people who were already living there. People act as if Israel as if it has a right to be there because bad things happened to European Jews during the holocaust...now talking about that topic...it really lowers expectations. It is the stupidest and oldest sob story. The holocaust was bad. What Israel did and continues to do the Palestinians is bad too. But the holocaust is over.

    • Posted By: hroosetex @ 01/03/2009 11:21:37 AM

I believe there were people occupying this country when the Europeans showed up.
