Meridor says that Iran is a danger to the "west" that means the U.S. Just more B.S. from Israel to get the U.S. to fight Iran. The Israelis said the same thing about Iraq...how did that work out for us? Americans...Americans...wake up! We should not fight any other wars when Israel says so! We don't owe Israel anything! I am a patriotic American and I don't want to fight any more wars for Israel!

With theses stupid enemies , we iranians do not really need any propaganda. If you think we give up our nuclear capacity to these craps, you are dead wrong, Mr!!. Aslo one question, Is this newsweek or elemenary school student booltean?

      Why do you need nukes?

  • Posted By: Tagh @ 01/04/2009 6:33:14 PM

Stop lying to cover your crimes. Iran has no nukes. Actually after all of these I hope they make nukes to protect themselves from ruthless animals that call themselves the chosen people. You guys are bunch of murderers and killers. After 60 years you have become the same oppressors that oppressed you during WWII.

    • Posted By: bighappy @ 01/04/2009 8:18:23 PM

So, you admit that Iran wants nukes. And consider this: if Iran made a promice to wipr out one of Arab countries and that country had nukes - Iran would alredy have been nuclear desert. Why don't you feel yourself so lucky that Israel is civilized society and does not behave like your islamist brothers?

      • Posted By: Tagh @ 01/05/2009 12:28:34 AM

Amazing, did you ever graduate from grade school? or ever watch anything else beside fox news? Go read what I said again slowly. Not sure how old you are or even know what Soviet Union was. But that country was wiped off the face of the earth about 20 years ago. If you read the real translation of what Iranian president said and not just rely on what Fox news or extremist Israelis tel you; you will notice he never said that.

        • Posted By: bighappy @ 01/05/2009 7:40:36 PM

He said what he said, it was in every news. Next tim ei expect you to convince us that your "You guys are bunch of murderes and killers" in fact means "You a good boys, I love you".

I believe that the only solution is change in policies of US. The whole world is suffering economic and other consequences of US policies. We should change our basic policy of supporting wars all over the world. We can reestablish our strategy and become the good superpower of the world again with support of nations all over this world.
Please read the interesting discussion of Time with Avrum Burg, the scion of one of Israel's founding families (His father was the deputy speaker of the first Knesset, and Burg himself later became speaker of the legislature, and a member of Israel's cabinet) :

      W. has already changed our policies by bankrupting us. As for becoming The Worlds Only SuperPower again, I don't think so.

"Ask yourself why these oil-rich countries want to go in this direction. I can understand it of countries with no other resources. But we're talking about countries that have vast oil reserves." ~ Sallai Meridor

    1. Oil is an increasingly limited resource.
    2. Oil is, for most Middle-Eastern countries, far more valuable for selling, than consuming.
    3. Non-oil-based fuels are the wave of the future, ANY nation that wishes to not be left behind in this burgeoning global market MUST invest in those technologies NOW.
    4. The environmental impact of burning oil ??? nuclear is a cleaner solution.
    5. You can't provide adequate electricity production to a modern country from oil...

And that's just off the top of my head. Where's this guy's been? Seriously, this ambassador is so dishonest with his many claims. I note that while he repeatedly mentions Arab countries, citing their supposed anxieties over the Iranians, yet, oddly enough, I have yet to see them screaming about Iran. It's the Israelis that keep beating the war drum in these interviews. "Go ask the Arab countries in the region whether they are ready to buy into such a suggestion"? Indeed! Perhaps HE should do this, or they should speak for themselves, rather than he speak for them...

    • Posted By: Jim1348 @ 01/05/2009 11:36:39 AM

The Arab countries are not screaming about Iran because they are hoping that Israel takes care of the problem for them. They see no need to get on the bad side of Ahmadinejad if they don't have to. That is largely the same reason the Europeans don't complain too much either, since we have always taken care of such problems for them. This time I think we won't, for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is that we are broke due to W.'s economic policies. The Europeans and Arabs are on their on this time. Lots of luck to them all.

This is right-wing BS. Iran says a lot of BS too. However, Iran is enriching UR only to a low lever that is NOT weapons grade but energy grade. Next Iran has not attacked another country in 240 years. Can any other country say this? The US and US newsmedia wants to piss off Americans about Iran to trick YOU into another war that will make the military industrial complex (wepons corporations) money, plus steal Iran's resources.

According to the National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) released last year, Iran halted its program in 2003. Yet the Ambassador quotes two values for their weapons stockpile (without error bars!) and then even extrapolates a rate of production from them. 2.5 a day is a serious capability, something that would appear obvious in their orders for centrifuge parts, etc. There is no indepent corroboration of this capability.

Israel is running the same WMD PR campaign that we used to invade Iraq.

What the hell is wrong with Newsweek, running a propaganda piece disguised as an interview? Who was the "interviewer" in this sorry piece?

  • Posted By: Ron Paul For Pope @ 01/04/2009 8:15:04 PM

"Look, this is the most critical issue for America and the Western world."

No, this is the most critical issue for Israel. Our most critical issue is our finances and our self-destructive foreign policy.

Let us say Israel is free to do whatever it wants. Let us also say the same of Iran. It has been shrewdly pointed out elsewhere that the Gaza invasion and articles like this are the run-up to a preemptive strike on Iran. We don't want to get dragged into that.

Besides, if Iran is developing nuclear weapons, then they're guilty of what Israel has already done -- using technology they stole from us. It seems likely that one of them will use theirs on the other. But let none of the blood be on our hands.

Israel is one paranoid country. America should steer clear of its dangerous rhetoric. Iran is not half as dangerous as Israel's portraying it.

I have an idea. How about we require Israel to follow the same rules and laws we want to require of Iran? Right now Israel is the only country in the middle east and that is extremely destabilizing. If you aren't willing to deal with Israeli nukes then we have no right whatsoever to even begin to claim some righteous mantle or the illusion of an honest broker.

Iran, by the UN's own admission, is following the rules. Israel has thumbed their nose at them for 60yrs because we let them and won't even admit to having them even though everyone knows they do.

Screw Israel until they want a fair playing field and want to follow international law.

    • Posted By: bighappy @ 01/04/2009 4:26:50 PM

Good idea. Israel has to send agents to pepper Iran cities with rockets from nearby territories or from the sea. Probably Israel also has to proclaim its purpose to annihilate Iran, and make good of this promoce?

    • Posted By: Jim1348 @ 01/04/2009 4:22:46 PM

You have it backwards. Israel never joined the NPT (Non-Proliferation Treaty), so they can develop nukes if they want. Iran did join the NPT, but hid certain activity that they were required to report. They are still a member of the NPT, but still not fully complying with the disclosure rules according to all accounts, hence the sanctions by the U.N.

Iran through cooperation with Pakistan,China and North Korea has developed the means to deliver a ballistic warhead already with the Shahab 3 rocket.Whether the have or will ahve a nuclear warhead to put on it i do not know. However i am guessing that they saw Saddam fall to the americans while Kim jong Il is still standing, because north Korea has a nuclear deterent no matter how crude and unimpressive. The iranians are shrewd and patient, two things i have never heard attributed to the americans and and i am sure this lesson was not lost on them.

    • Posted By: Jim1348 @ 01/04/2009 4:07:17 PM

The fact that we let N. Korea openly develop nukes is a disgrace, and a disaster of major proportions. It certainly was not lost on the Iranians at all. In fact, if you look at their statements, they largely followed along the N. Korean lines, and even use the same bellicose rhetoric, but delayed a couple of weeks. And the point about the ICBMs is very significant. You would never develop them just to deliver conventional warheads. They obviously have nukes in mind at some point, it is just a question of how far along they are. It wouldn't surprise me at all if they already have plutonium from N. Korea, another fallout (so to speak) of W.'s technique of preventing rogues states from acquiring WMDs.

I agree that it is time for Israel to step forward and eliminate Iran as a threat to itself and to the entire western world. Iran has not hesitated to detail its desires to see Israel and the United States vaporized and sometime this year Tehran will have enough nuclear fuel to incincerate Tel Aviv or New York City. for those of us, who don't have your extensive knowledge on nuclear weapons, could you please explain how iran goes from having enough enriched uranium this year, to building a nuclear weapons system in less than a year? how does one deliver such a weapon to new york city to incinerate it? think for yourself, and stop believing everything you hear from the same people who told us that iraq had so many wmds that you could trip over them, and they were never anymore than 45 minutes to launch. when they couldn't find them, it was argued that they were shipped to syria! today on google you can zero in on your home using satellite technology, but far more sophisticated technology couldn't detect a nuclear arsenal being smuggled into syria. it's only about a 460 mile trip. i wouldn't believe anything this group says about iran.

Islam is the biggest problem facing civilization today. The rise of Islam is mirrored by the rise in terror, murder and devastation. Until we realize that we are fighting a war against Islam and not against terror we won't have the ammunition we need to defeat this enemy of humanity, Islam. Mark Montgomery boboberg@nyc.rr.com

iran with a nuke or two is by no means the equivalent of an already nuclear armed pakistan, with more extremist per square mile than any country on earth, and practically no functioning government. wait till that situation blows. worldwide consequences.

so awaz, it appears your exercizing your freedom of speach, along with your freedom of openly announcing your religion or faith. Allwo me to enlighten you. It is not evil that makes itself always immediatedly known rather, evil's method is to slowly manefest in ihis sore and to invade within all bodily regions so as to consume and spread outward i.e.the hydra effects... There are great differences between these 2 known major religions, whil emany fractions exist within, it is rather apparent that the christian beleifs hold much higher values for life and freedom of choices than any muslim religions combined. CHristians allow muslims to live within them yet muslims would chose deadly force to prevent christians from walking the same earth...so awaz, next time your emotions feel prone to excersize your extreme right to freedom of speech, please remember where you live and why you are allow such intolerance...in the end, we will all be judged, how we got there will be what determines where we go forever...and awaz, the end is so very near...and is why evil plants it's hatred and intolerances with in the muslim and christian world...yet yours is to destroy and christians to save humanity from evils destructions.... when is the last time you huged a child or received a heart felt hug..only in the free world awaz....freedom to make choices that will ruin us or heal us...because in the end, it's all about how we got there...

CHristians allow muslims to live within them yet muslims would chose deadly force to prevent christians from walking the same earth. this is pure idiocy. do you realize that for example that there is anywhere from 100000-300000 christians living in iran. are you also aware that israel tried to convince the tens of thousands of jews who live in iran to leave, and they refused, informing israel that iran is their home?

  • Posted By: Jim1348 @ 01/03/2009 10:25:43 PM

It is remarkable the number of people who don't know the difference between low enriched uranium (10 percent typically) and highly-enriched uranium (around 90 percent), which you need to build a bomb. And even less do they know the difficulty in getting to the higher amount. Why doesn't Newsweek employ some experts to advise them before publishing this stuff?

Maybe W.'s legacy that you don't need to know anything in order to pronounce on war and peace has something to do with it.

    • Posted By: mauritius @ 01/04/2009 2:45:13 AM

great point. people also need to know that even after acquiring enough high grade uranium, you are still along way from building a working nuclear weapon. the propagandists make it seem as though you can get the nuclear technology know-how off the internet.

  • Posted By: ainventor @ 01/03/2009 11:23:45 PM

Iran has stated that they want Israel dead. Do you really think Iran is going to build a Nuclear bomb and then sit and look at it? Please. How quickly people forget. After 9/11, President Bush said that if a country harbors terrorists, then they too will be treated like terrorists. Palestine seems to want Hamas in their country or else they would get rid of them. They haven't tried to get rid of them, so they must support them. And if they support Hamas then they deserve what they get from Isreal. Isreal is defending itself from Hamas. As long as Palestine allows Hamas to stay in their country then make no mistake about it. They are no different than Hamas. Isreal has every right to defend itself.

    • Posted By: mauritius @ 01/04/2009 2:39:02 AM

where is it stated that iran wants israel dead? do you speak persian? what proof have you seen that iran is seeking a nuclear weapon? are you a nuclear weapons technology expert. would you know what a centrifuge looks like?

  • Posted By: John_regular_guy @ 01/03/2009 1:52:22 PM

The ambassador asks why would a country with vast oil reserves pursue nuclear energy? He implies that the only answer is the pursuit of nuclear weapons technology. There is another reason for these countries and anyone else living on this planet to seek an alternative to using vast amounts of fossil fuel to provide energy; survival. Our children already face a very real threat to their survival from global warming. Weaning countries off cheap fossil fuel (cheap for countries with large reserves) is vital to our survival.

Whether these countries seek nuclear weapons as a response to the perceived threat of a nuclear weapons armed Iran or not we need to put aside ideology and wrap our heads around the realpolitik implications of the fact that if those ???vast oil reserves??? are burned for energy global warming will go beyond "threatening" the survival of billions. This includes your children wherever you live on this planet.

    • Posted By: mauritius @ 01/04/2009 2:34:35 AM

one reason that the ambassador forgot to mention is that according to experts in the oil industry, iran is expected to have net oil exports of zero within 20 years, with domestic oil supplies falling off rapidly thereafter are they expected to wait until then to address this problem?.

    • Posted By: Ronnie James Dio @ 01/03/2009 2:14:02 PM

It makes no sense to worry about the environment and future generations when the threat of nuclear destruction exists TODAY. It is a fact that the government in Iran is an AVOWED enemy to the existence of Israel and her backer the United States. Trusting a nation/government that states their reasons for aquiring nuclear technology capable of producing city-destroying weapons is "purely peaceful" but questions the very occurence of such a well documented historical event as the Jewish Holocaust is pure folly.

The current government of Iran is the enemy of the West, to believe otherwise is to bury your head in the sand.
