Yes young bucks with antlers would grow to be bigger bucks with bigger antlers. But your argument says that all small bucks wiht antlers would grow to be big bucks with antlers. This is not true, as I'm sure you would agree. Some of them will live some will die, due to the pressures of life. The strong / most fit with live longer, and they will be the ones with the biggest antlers.

The HEADLINE toutes evolution and as we see the article has nothing to do with the elusive subject. The mentioned species are squeezed through hunting, one factor, and are reduced genetically. There is no gain of information. The ANIMALS do not suddenly have point mutations and sprout wings to fly away to EVOLUTION land. SUDDEN, YES, there is no gradulasm in the fossil record. You have to stop wishing this stuff into existence. The article is so misleading, it constitutes intelectual malpractice. Where is your SCIENTIFIC OBJECTIVE PROOF? COGNITIVE DISONANCE apparently but I have no direct proof. This is nothing more than a godLESS religion with evolutionary theory as its creed holding the rightous shield of science over the unwashed intelectual pesants. You make science an accomplance in your pursuit of inequality.......

Nice post! Evolution is a fairy tale with absolutely NO PROOF!!!

Without hunting the weak and old would die off for lack of food. The strong / most fit would survive.

THIS BIMBO OF A REPORTER HAS HER FACTS SCREWED LIKE HER BEANIE IS ON TOO TIGHT........RESEARCH WILL SHOW THERE ARE WAY MORE TROPHY ANIMALS OUT THERE TODAY THAN EVER....WHY DO WE KEEP BREAKING THE RECORD BOOK YEAR AFTER YEAR? BECAUSE THEY ARE BREEDING BETTER THAN EVER!

    • Posted By: Yuseff @ 01/06/2009 4:21:32 PM

Yeah BowHunter, I'm with you. Screw all those wacko liberal facts and reasoning. Its far easier just call the author names.

I don't know if anyone else reading has realized that the same process is happening to human beings, but at an even faster rate. The widespread use of antibiotics and immunization has rendered us far weaker and less fit. The same thing is true of assisted reproduction; slightly fertile people who would not produce offspring without medical assistance are doing so. Their you are likely to be weaker and sicker than normal.

Of course these actions are humane and kind, and I'm in no way advocating genetic selection or denying people access to health care. But over time saving everyone who can be temporarily saved will degrade the human gene pool to the point that some truly hideous organism will take 50% of the living population. Natural selection will not be mocked; the weakest will be taken, slowly or in one fell swoop.

There is no proof anywhere that an infant created through any artificial means is in any way an inferior being.

    • Posted By: mcsage @ 01/05/2009 8:30:06 AM

The disaster is that we are subsidizing, through various "welfare" schemes, the breeding of useless parasitic humans who's only skills are the ability to cajole more payments, and propagation of the socially worthless attitudes and behavior.

      • Posted By: splashy9 @ 01/06/2009 1:03:27 AM

Sounds like much of the wealthy of the world, who don't really produce much of anything and are parasites on the working people. Too bad they continue to reproduce with all that medical help, unlike the poor who die off without medical care here in the US. Look at the infant mortality rate amongst the poor and try to tell me that they are surviving better than the parasitic rich that live by pushing money around.

Evolution, shme-volution. There is no such thing. Darwin came up with that idea to keep God out of the equation. It has since become a religion for atheists. It is not science-based. There has been no evidence clearly showing it happens. Evolution teaches the "survival of the fittest." Those who believe in evolution, in order to be consistent with their beliefs, should have no problem with the Holocaust in Nazi Germany, since the Jewish people who were murdered were not as "fit" as those who did the killing. They would see this as the "natural order" of things.
But, many evolutionists do see the Holocaust as wrong, and this is inconsistent with "survival of the fittest."

By your thinking atomic theory is a bunch of bunk because it is not mentioned in the bible either and 'God was not written into the equation' yet where I live my electric power is produced by nuclear power plants and the U.S. alone has over a thousand nuclear arms in its arsenal. Atoms, protons, neutrons, quarks etc. were not not written in scripture. This is all atheist fantasy.

I get it! My electricity and the U.S. arsenal is all a figment of the Looney Left's imagination. I bet it was Hiliary Clinton herself or perhaps Nancy Pelosi who faked that bombing of Hiroshima in 1945.

Why stray from the topic... If you have evidence for your wonderful evolution theory, I am all ears :) I have studied evolution for years and have not found ONE piece of evidence to support it. Please enlighten me...

Humans evolved out of hunting and foraging when our numbers were small and our "footprint" on the animals we stalked and killed was small. Sport hunting and efforts at "conservation hunting" is an altogether different matter and goes to the heart of the article. When wolves were reintroduced into Yellowstone, one of the fears was the effect this would play on the caribou herd. Of the first changes noticed when wolves began feeding on caribou, however, was the effect the caribou had caused during the wolves absence. Vegetation along streams and rivers had been grazed on by the caribou and when the wolves moved the herds back up the slopes of the mountains where they normally live, the vegetation returned to the banks of the waterways. This in turn cooled the waters helping the trout populations and also offering cover to migratory birds and small animals that had been displaced by the loss of the natural cover. The trout again became sustainable and provided protein for the grizzly which was endangered. After several years had gone by, the numbers of caribou stabilized and the health of the herd actually increased - the wolves had naturally predated the weaker animals from the gene pool and the calves were stronger with less juvenile mortality, the new cows were more likely to have more offspring than before. Anyway, you get the picture....

I've seen elk in Yellowstone but never a caribo. Nice try but your statements are totally a figment of your imagination.

  • Posted By: Alberto @ 01/04/2009 9:57:48 AM

Au contraire Bigfoot1491, the amazing thing is that you could read this article and ignore the science and analysis which is presented. And further, provide some self serving argument against the hypothesis with nothing but a personal opinion of how great hunters are.

    • Posted By: afm528 @ 01/04/2009 10:08:51 PM

"At present, researchers' alarm about these trends are based on theories that are hard to prove. To make scientific claims about the effects of hunting on the evolution of a species, researchers like Melnick would need thorough data from animal populations that lived at least several decades ago, which rarely exist."

Sounds like there is a distinct LACK of scientific evidence in this article, by the author's own admission. This is sensationalism, not journalism and certainly not science.

      • Posted By: splashy9 @ 01/06/2009 1:15:47 AM

But, there is lot's of logic taken from breeding results that have been done for centuries. Do you want to wait until the species are so weakened they can't survive, or do you want hunters to grasp the concept and start a "breeding program" of their own to work back up to bigger, stronger and healthier game?

        • Posted By: Bluebones @ 01/06/2009 4:09:41 PM

The deer and elk that I have seen sure haven't seemed very weak.

Amazing how selfishness guides many humans. One whiff of a threat to their ability to do whatever they personally thnk is ok, or desireable for themselves, and think nothing of the long term impact. Humans are the most selfish animals on the planet, and for once I'd like to hear one hunter admit that before spewing forth his or her sainted opinion, about anything!

    • Posted By: olde yankee @ 01/06/2009 4:02:19 PM

I am a hunter and I agree that humans are the greediest things on the planet! Especially the yuppies who over develop and destroy wildlife habitat which kills of the animals of all types. The ones who create the need for more malls and theme parks to satisfy their urges and are destroying the planet for ALL forms of life, then point the finger at others. Open your eyes and you'll see you are the one to blame.

  • Posted By: Brien Comerford @ 01/04/2009 3:44:00 PM

All forms of hunting should be banned. It's a cruel and inhumane activity that i maims, cripples and kills innumerable innocent creatures ! If hunters want to kill they should enlist in the military to wage combat against murderous terrorists.

    • Posted By: Bluebones @ 01/06/2009 4:01:34 PM

Brian, I know that your type won't do any fighting for freedom or patriotic reasons and you should be glad that the hunter types are ABLE and WILLING to protect you and your freedoms, such as freedom to open your mouth and prove your stupidity. History has proven that these things can not be left for the weak members of a society to cope with.

Won't work. Road kill is random. Trophy hunting, by definition, is highly selective.

If a young buck with small antlers could grow to be a large antlered buck then his genetics won't change as he grows. This article acts as though a monster buck's DNA isn't the same as when he is immature. The reason there are smaller animals (racks) is because the older ones are being killed and the younger ones are the survivors. Younger animals will naturally be smaller. If nobody hunted for 3 years there would be more trophies out there. This won't be happening by magic, it will be the result of immature animals "growing up". A well managed herd will consistently produce trophy bucks. If all people shoot are small bucks there will be no older bucks later and thus no trophies. Killing the older ones ensures that younger ones have the potential to grow. Generally the biggest monsters are the oldest of the population.

This is similar to what used to happen to sharks, they were getting killed alot because it ultered a human way of life. Then again scientist found that it could be ultering the food chain in the seas. When will people learn there are consequences with messing with nature.

TO KRISTONROCHON: Your first sentence from your first post. QUOTE: Hunting is barbaric and hunting has killed many species. Umm, yeah, thank hunting. QUOTE Next, in your post: QUOTE: Let's stop illegal hunting and limit legal hunting before it's too late. QUOTE 1. You still don't know the difference between hunting and poaching. 2. Obviously, you still don't know anything about hunting. 3. Sorry, honey. Hunting season ended Saturday. I harvested 3 deer legally. 4. I'll take redneck as a compliment to what you are. 5. You still haven't answered my question.

Today, Boone and Crockett anounced a new world record non-typical bull. Just because the liberals are now in power can't they find someone better to attack then humters? James.Oregon

  • Posted By: kevinbear @ 01/06/2009 3:42:38 PM

If this were true records set in Boone and Crockett and Pope and Young in past years wouldn't ever be broken, not so, there broken all the time. The explanation is easy, game management like never before in the history of humans. Also pockets of animals all over the U.S and world are protected {National Parks, non hunting landowners, ect.} and can only support a set amount of animals, they spill out into huntable areas. Anyone with a degree in wildlife managment can shoot this down in a heartbeat. Kevin in Colorado

  • Posted By: chuck_town @ 01/06/2009 3:33:36 PM

The article does not say elk and deer populations are down, it just states that the bigger/more ornate males are reproducing less. THAT is the evolution being written about in this article. Some people making comments seem to think evolution and survival of the fittest leads to extinction. That is not always the case.

  • Posted By: JimintheOC @ 01/06/2009 3:33:21 PM

Wrong again. The author cannot ever get basic facts correct. First of all, the animals shown in the phots are not kudus. Second, hunters are the only reason many animals in Africa and around the world are surviving today; we are the ones that provide for the funds to protect these animals, and we provide a means of living for natives in many, many, places. Third, the entire article is just one more attempt by the wacky far left to demonize hunters.
