If Obama Is Serious

As an American Jew, I am outraged at Israel's behavior in Gaza. It is Israel's practice of collective punishment and draconian tactics that stokes much of the anti-semitism in the Arab World and the West, not moderates like Mr. Miller who take an objective, realistic view of the situation. The rockets coming into Israel are inexcusable but they come from a few bad apples and Israel punishes all 1.5 million Gazans. The vast majority are poor, malnourished and devoid of hope. They truly are victims. Israel's Defense Minister summarized the country's position best in 2002 when he said that Palestinians must recognize that they "are a defeated people".

The Jews WERE God's chosen people Until they rejected their messiah, you know the one named Jesus. In the eyes of a true christian who knows their bible they are considered non-believers and are in the same category as Budahists, Muslims, Hindus, rock worshippers, etc.. They don't know Jesus and will not enter his kingdom until they accept him as their saviour.

I guess I know now what they mean when they say you can use the bible to justify just about anything. Want to steal some land? Want to kill a bunch of defenseless, starving children? The Bible says it's Okay, because these are the chosen people. Destroying the rocket launchers will DO NOTHING. Iran will restock them for free within a few months. Treat the disease (inequality, disease, hunger, joblessness, discrimination, murder....)

If we could take God out of these equations everyone would be so much better off.

Listen the comments about being unfair to Israel and not loving the Israeli people in for inaccurate....Right is right and wrong is wrong. The comments of Jews being the chosen people and so forth are understandable, but that does not give them to right to confiscate people's land and basically imprison them on a strip of land where they are not free to move about, because you are afraid that they will retaliate for the wrongs that have been done to them. The Palestinains are tired of rockets too. But they eant to live free and they want their land back...That is the key to this whole issue. Israel won what they won during the war, but the Israleis continue to illegally plant settlements upon Palestinaian land;. And the Palestianians are tired of the government double speak, Israel and American government. So Israel is really fighting to keep land that is not theirs. They are aggravating the situation and have been for many many years, with no one calling a spade a spade. And the only ones that have been able to listen and basically side with the Palestinians are the other Arab nations, that's why this situation has escalated. This is the escalation of a situation that began over land....LAND! And Israel has got to give the Palestinians back land that is rightfully theirs and stop allowing their citizens to take it. Just because you are the "chosen people" doesn't not give you the right to step all over someone else's rights.

thank you for this post. very balanced. the analogy of mexico or canada firing rockets into the united states is far from accurate from the facts. Occupation under international law legally gives the occupied to fight occupation by any means neccesary. So a correct analogy would be if mexico occupied the united states and the united states then fought back against the mexican occupiers with rockets this is the situation and not the propaganda.

He's not going to do a darn thing! Nor should he.....we have alot of alot of problems at home that need attention. Besides, they will never solve this. One side needs to destroy the other.

Charlie Krauthammer,writing in todays Washington Post,again hits the nail on the head. The terrorist thugocracy that is HAMAS is the main obstacle to peace in the region. If this were not so,they would not also be going after FATAH in order to hang onto power. The idea of ''international peacekeepers''that will keep the lid on between the two sides as advanced by several mediators including Carter is a laughable farce,as is already being witnessed by the totally neutered-by-HEZBOLLAH actions of UNFIL in Lebanon,where HEZBOLLAH is openly moving arms and men in the now-routine violations of the deal that was supposed to end the 2006 War. Israel should crush HAMAS move to embrace the PA moderates that HAMAS is already targeting,and cut a deal for the withdraw of Jewish settlements for acceptance of Israels right to exist within the field of compromise unfettered by the presence of these terrorist gangsters.

The Israelis are the inventors of modern terroist tactics: bombs in crowded market places, attacks on civilian villages; the PLO spent the 1950s studying Jewish terror tactics in order to trun them against their perpetrators.

Israel is also the world most egregeous rogue state: it is in violation of more UN resolutions than any other nation, for a longer time. It's like if Sudan or Milosevic's Serbia or Saddam's Iraq had carte blanche because the US protected them at the UN Security Council despite international outrage.

Resistance to occupation is legal under international law. This is what the Palestinians have been doing for 40 years. If the Tibetans do it it's ok, but not the Palestinian?? Why? Moreover the Israelis respond every time with exponential collective punishment of civilians, which you justify by saying the people "brought it upon themselves" by refusing to roll over and accept ethnic cleansing and life in a giant open-air prison camp.

Forget the 100-to-1 kill ratio. Let's look at the context: 1) the rockets; their context? the siege of Gaza: for 4 years the Israelis have been bombing and starving the 1.4 million people in the giant prison camp that is Gaza. 2) "but wait, didn't these people elect Hamas, which wants to destroy Israel?" - Yes, but in what context was that? Haven't the Israelis been voting into power for 60 years parties, left and right, which not only advocate the destruction of the Palestinians as a people, but have in fact carried it out without reprieve? As Labor, Likud ans Kadima are all Zionist parites, isn't the wiping of Palestine off the face of the map their reason for existence? 3) "yes, but what about the context of the Holocaust? didn't the Jews need a homeland?" - Sure, but why at the expense of the Palestinians? They didn't commit the Holocaust!" 4) "But wasn't it the Arabs who refused the original partition plan?" - Yes, this is a plan that would have given to the Jewish newcomers 3 times the land they had already taken, bought or stolen. OF COURSE the Arabs rejected it, there's no people on earth who wouldn't have! And in the resulting war the Israelis took TWICE even that land, leaving the rightful owners with only 22% of the land they had inhabited for 2,000 years.

Afterall, Obama's first appointment was Ram Emanuel who's history in serving israel is quite obvious and he will be Chief of Staff.

I, as a man of Palestinian origin having the Jordanian nationality and living in Saudi Arabia where I work there, I'm fully convinced that America's support of israeli brutal occupation has been outragous and even encouraging for all of the attrocities and massacres that the israelis have been, and still are, committing against Palestinians as well as arabs and muslims.

But I, as well as many arabs and muslims, have big big doubts about this(subject of the article). Many here fully believe that any American president must, and I mean must, fully adhere to serving israel's brutal occupation and israel's views. This has been consistent for the past 60 years and I do not think it will change with Obama. Afterall, Obama's first appointment was Ram Emanuel who's history in serving israel is quite obvious and he will be Chief of Staff.
