It is an unfortunate fact of the human condition that the innocent and/or defenseless are the ones who suffer when those in control use their power to further their interests, especially when those interests are mired in fanatical beliefs. Add to this a culture where those radicals are eager to self-destruct to be declared highly regarded martyrs. Israelis do not share these emotions. They are like us. They want to live. They cannot trust what they see accross the border which is a terrorist group who have expressed tjheir only aim which is to wipe Israel off the map. That means, of course, to kill all the men, women and children in Israel. They fire rockets into the cities for that purpose.

Hamas is not going to stop trying to attain their objective no matter what they agree to. They cannot be beleived. The human suffering in Gaza doesn't bother the fanatical militants who place themselves in highly populated areas to use the casualties to garner sympathy from people like you, Mr. Miller. If you were a sitting duck like an Israeli mother with her children in a town within range of the rockets being fired from Gaza,and had to run to a shelter at any hour of the day or night you would'nt take it.

Israel is only too aware of what it is facing and what it needs to be secure therefore if it can't veto insufficient and misguided negotiations dealing with their life and death issues who can?

First the president should be tough with the arab countries that demand the end of Israel first and get them to stop attacking Israel and hiding behind little school kids.

Isreal's response is common sense. What would the US response be if mexico or canada fired rockets into the populated areas of the US? The US needs to continue support of Israel and not give into global politics of insanity such as Hamas and the nations that support such actions.

It is really a myth that America has "always had exclusive ties to Israel" and every US president has always protected the special relationship with Israel. Israel has been more pro-America than America has been pro-Israel. There are many in America including those in government who would foolishly go the way of Europe and try to undermine the security of Israel for some misguided belief in fairness and so-called national interest. It is actually in America's national interest to pursue and maintain a special relationship with Israel. America has few friends in the world and Israel has consistently shown itself to be one of the most loyal. The so-called allies that America has in Europe and in the Arab world actually are no better than opportunists who are praying fervently for the demise of your dear country so they can gain in influence and power. Trying to appease them by sacrificing Israel is sheer naivety.
Hamas was placed in power by a majority of the 1.5 million people who live in Gaza and that majority must now see clearly the bitter consequence of their unwise decision. Among other reasons, Hamas was picked to challenge Israel militarily and I find it surprising and even laughable that as soon as the conflict becomes intense and personal they quickly cry foul. If you want to destroy Israel and wipe it off the map, well you must prepare for the possibility that Israel could destroy you and wipe you off the map! Fortunately, the only sane military and political force in the Middle East is Israel and this bloodshed will end sooner than later, sparing many innocent souls. Sure there are people in Gaza who did not vote for Hamas just as there are people in America who did not vote Obama. Israel has shown more consideration to all the people of Gaza than Hamas has shown. Hamas would rather sacrifice them all for its insane ambitions.

Aaron Miller - shut up. One, it's not for us to dictate what goes on over there. Two, Irael is constantly being attacked in some way, from gun shots, bombs, rockets to the media. Hamas is the problem. The Palestinian government, if you want to call it a government, won't even try to stop Hamas from instigating every conflict. They don't belong there. Get your people together and give them the boot out of your country already and live in peace. Stop trying to put some kind of wild spin on the situation like Israel needs to grow up and act like a big brother. If I kept poking my brother in the arm long enough, rest assured he would get annoyed and punch me in order to get me to stop. Leave Israel be already. Don't we have enough problems here in our own backyard to contend with? Lets try to solve our own before helping someone else out for a change.

Hamas........the sooner you cease ALL rocket launching into Israel, the sooner Israel will cease attacks on you!
Israel has given you land; has granted treaty arrangements; has backed off many other times, yet Hamas has NOT lived up to it's end of the deal.
Let's face it........Hamas, which is a ally with Iran want the same thing.....the extermination of all Jews! So my response is this: Go Israel, crush the crazy nuts into oblivian! God is with you!

A lot of people try to single out muslims as the bad guys terriost, the truth is killing innocent people is aginist islam, and those people who do, do that deserve to be punished, but not those innocent civilians, who end up paying the price for others. Those people in Gaza who die havent done anything, but still they die, they lose ther husband their wives and children, but its okay to do so because there muslim or because there leader is corrupt, no! People who do say all terriost are muslims, are making sterotypes,because there have been many terriost before 9/11 who were not muslim or arab...People who can kill innocent people for no reason are not muslim. And i believe barak obama can change the situation, because right now we are supporting that it is okay to kill civilians when it is not, and someone doesnt take a stand these issues between these two countries will never be resolved.

Absolutely change our policy. Standing by Israel when they are over reacting and aggresive is wrong and so is our stupid "Israel right or wrong" Foreign policy. Both sides need to be forced into an honorable settlement. Israel should have no say over Palestine or who comes and who goes there. Reporters should be able to cover Palestine and we need to stop supporting Israel's censorship methods. I think the big question is, WHO WILL RUN THE U.S. UNDER THE NEXT ADMIN,ISRAEL OR OBAMA????

Israel has done nothing but defend themselves and the land given to them by God himself. I WISH I COULD SAY THE SAME FOR YOU BED WETTING LIBERALS! Obviously, the writer of this article is very naive. We had better get much tougher with the militant muslims in our own country and abroad. We should get squarely behind Israel and further tell Saudi Arabia that if they raise the price of oil by cutting back production on us for backing Israel, then we should attack them. Militant islam cannot be tolerated, nor be catered to in any fashion.

This is a well thought out article. The truth is sometimes really bitter but it needs to be told. In the Middle East there are no saints. There is more than enough blame to go round but this is the time to look forward and work for peace. Palestinians must accept the fact that Israel is in the Middle East and is going nowhere. Israelis must also accept the fact that they cannot occupy a people's land, deny their nationality and expect that that they will meekly accept that situation. Peace demands that both sides make painful concessions. The current situation imposes painful realities and a points to a bleak future, for both sides. The US needs to be more even handed, as befits an honest peacemaker, in order to bring peace to the Middle East.
