What is there to resolve, really, when the explicit Muslim goal is the elimination of Israel entirely? How does one strike a compromise with someone who will not accept anything less than your death? I certainly recognize that Israel has been brutal at times. However, the question of Israel's basic right to exist as a nation is as settled as that of half a dozen other post-WWII nations. The 2000 offer of a Palestinian state went farther than anything I ever expected to see from the Israelis in my lifetime, and yet in return, they launched a new intifada. They don't want land, they want blood, and failure to understand that basic fact is what reveals Carter, and all those who think like him, as naive fools.

There is more than enough blame to go round but this is the time to look forward and work for peace. Palestinians must accept the fact that Israel is in the Middle East and is going nowhere. Israelis must also accept the fact that they cannot occupy a people's land, deny their nationality and expect that that they will meekly accept that situation. Peace demands that both sides make painful concessions. The current situation imposes painful realities and a points to a bleak future, for both sides. Why does the United States feel THEY have to be the ones to solve the Jewish/Arab problem? Why is it the United States feels they have to lay out any kind of "roadmap to peace"? 1. There are other permanant members on the UN Security council. Let them earn their keep and figure something out. 2. Let the Jews & Arabs kill each other. Either they'll eventually run out of bodies, or they will get tired of fighting and create their own peace accord.

Since Israel receives more aid from the US than the US gives to all other nations combined, and because we are usually the sole veto to restrain Israel from settlement building and other actions that have sown the seeds of hatred......

Our we really even discussing this. Israel should do everything in there power to stop terrorism. If hamas was in Canada and shooting missiles over here in the United States we would destroy them. So tell me what is the purpose of this discussion.

Nicoyas1, Did you read the same article I did? Because I didn't see anything in it about putting anyone in a concentration camp. Maybe the first sentence of the piece could have been worded a bit more softly, but this is not an Anti-semetic article by any stretch of the imagination. Yes, Jews have suffered unthinkable atrocities, but that does not justify the merciless attacks against Palestinian civilians in Gaza; over half of the victims have been women and children, and hospital officials in Gaza have reported that barely any of the victims that have been brought in have been Hamas militants. If you take offense to the notion that the indiscriminate bombing of apartment buildings, markets and schools is something the United States should take a strong stance against, perhaps you have some prejudices of your own. P.S. it's "you're right". Not "your right".

First of all.... America withdrawing it's aid is not a punishment. The U.S. has given Palistine the gift of millions of U.S. dollars over the years, and many Palistianis cheered when the two towers fell on 9/11. Just because you do not give someone a gift doesn't mean you are hurting them. Hurting them would be to steal something of theirs. Palistine is ruled by enimies of Israel meaning the money recieved from the U.S. goverment in the past obviously frees up more money for Hamas to build bombs and rockets to kill innocent civilians in Israel. Also, a country is like a business it needs to be self sufficent. A country should never consider foreign generosity to be a renewable resource. A word of advice such as ???stop over-populating your own nation??? could do them more good.
Shame on you Newsweek for putting such a misleading spin on the generous nature of the U.S. and calling withdrwal of our aid a "punishment".
On another note...... When Hamas fired even one rocket into Israel, it is as if they kicked a sleeping tiger. They purposefully endangered themselves and all thoes around them when they could have just left Israel alone. There is no reason for Obama to get tough on Israel. The rockets, suicide bombings, and threats towards wiping Israel off the map must stop now and forever, and should have stopped a long time ago. this is what Obama should say to Hamas, Palistine, the middle east and the world.

<"No process at all would be better than a dishonest one that hurts America's credibility.">
Now you're talkin', Miller. No process would be best of all. After all, when a primary reason for Hamas' existence is to destroy Israel, what good would realistically come from a peace process anyway? As with all the politicians, big thinkers and think tanks across the nation, history means nothing. Peace in that area of the world is not going to happen...ever. And perish the thought of ever making people angry with the U.S. for standing up to peoples and countries that aid Hamas or any other cowardly terrorists. Wouldn't being hard on Israel give hope to those that would destroy it? Do we not recognize the strategic importance of our relationship with Israel? Has there been no time when America denounced Israel's gov't for its actions? The truth of it all is, there will never be peace in that area until all terrorist organizations cease to exist. That means we have to kill them as well as start getting tougher on their supporters. Tough but fair means killing ALL the bad guys with equal vigor, and coming down on ALL the countries that refuse to help.
I'm talking to the 3 nitwits who posted comments before me as well. Let's just hope Obama has the cajones to be even tougher on terrorists, states that harbor terrorists, and the real rogue states of the world; like North Korea, Iran, Syria and the like...Israel is NOT a rogue state. You believe that the IDF overreacted to its nation being bombed and rocketed? Forget using better weaponry, let's just blow spit wads at 'em, guys. We certainly don't want to overreact.
There's automatic weapons fire coming from that building, Yoshi. We'd better not return fire because the bad guys are using school children as human shields. How cowardly and inhuman can anyone be? Hamas' leadership is in hiding while their brainwashed underlings do the fighting, hiding behind civilians. How's that for cowardice? Egypt closed their borders to thwart off refugees...anybody raise hell about that? NO!!! If the bad guys want to hide behind innocents, and the innocents aren't getting out of the way...that's part of this kind of war boys. You don't see/hear anybody demonstrating about these cowardly psychos!!! These are the murderers who have no regard for human life.
I totally agree that America isn't perfect, or even always right...but It's pretty obvious to me that people believe it's better or cooler to be anti-American or Israeli than to do what's right for the country and its citizens. Open your eyes and your minds, people. Dig for as much information as you can find then form an opinion. Maybe even your own.

    From The TimesJanuary 8, 2009

Gaza victims' burns increase concern over phosphorus

Photographic evidence has emerged that proves that Israel has been using controversial white phosphorus shells during its offensive in Gaza, despite official denials by the Israel Defence Forces.

There is also evidence that the rounds have injured Palestinian civilians, causing severe burns. The use of white phosphorus against civilians is prohibited under international law.

The Times has identified stockpiles of white phosphorus (WP) shells from high-resolution images taken of Israel Defence Forces (IDF) artillery units on the Israeli-Gaza border this week. The pale blue 155mm rounds are clearly marked with the designation M825A1, an American-made WP munition. The shell is an improved version with a more limited dispersion of the phosphorus, which ignites on contact with oxygen, and is being used by the Israeli gunners to create a smoke screen on the ground.

The rounds, which explode into a shower of burning white streaks, were first identified by The Times at the weekend when they were fired over Gaza at the start of Israel's ground offensive. Artillery experts said that the Israeli troops would be in trouble if they were banned from using WP because it is the simplest way of creating smoke to protect them from enemy fire.

There were indications last night that Palestinian civilians have been injured by the bombs, which burn intensely. Hassan Khalass, a doctor at al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City, told The Times that he had been dealing with patients who he suspected had been burnt by white phosphorus. Muhammad Azayzeh, 28, an emergency medical technician in the city, said: ???The burns are very unusual. They don't look like burns we have normally seen. They are third-level burns that we can't seem to control.???........

I know this will not be posted due to mention of GOD, but here it is for the truths sake. This land was given to Israel by the one and only GOD, the GOD of Abraham, Issac, Jacob. Let us not forget the agenda of the radical Islams . If we as a nation and or people, turn our back on Israel we are more so damned than we ever thought we could be. When you hear peace, peace. Sudden distruction is at hand. Prepare!!!!!!!

As the saying - goes you are so full of it your eyes are ???.

People like you already have killed over 6 million of Jews by acquiescing when Hitler took the power. I can hear your rhetoric then just like now??? This time you can do better, just send American troop and kill al the Jews, then the total solution has been completed. Although if this does happen with help from people like you and the new president. After all, what is a life of 5 million Jews worth anyway?

    No Regards, ms.

I have read many comments posted and I read many in disbelief. the start of "israel" was a mistake and everyone is paying for it in various ways. First the french occupied the arab land then it was the english who worked out a deal with the U.S to place jewish people in the area of present day Israel. Many palestians were forced out of there homes leaving all their belongings never to be allowed to return. These were the seeds of hate planted by a group of people who suffered under the same mentality by the germans. I ask how does the world look a way from all the facts of the difficult daily life a palestiniians suffer through every day. Why ...why why is it ok for them to be treated this way ? Because jews were murdered so now there lives are only important and they now answer to knowone. Israel is funded about 3 billion by the U.S mostly for weapons to fight off an enemy they themselves created. They should have learned from their horrible experience and wanted to live fairly with others in the world. It is absurd that the U.S and the English allowed Israel to be created. Both countries should have allowed them into the country instead of turning them away. It is morally wrong to form a country the way they did. It was never about leaving side by side with others-it was always about creating a world of their own with their own forces so they never could be victimized again. They as a people are just as bad as the people who murdered them in the beginning.

I think you really hit the nail by the head, beside you the other person that also comes clean and tell it like it is, is the former US President Carter. My advice to the detractors who would want to criticize your write up is that they should try to read President Carter book on the whole Palestine Israeli mess. For several years the entire international communities have been made to believe altered version of the whole story. Certainly the Israeli attitude is not helping the issue. They???ve undermined several valuable attempts made by the UN to resolve this issue, all in the efforts to indirectly unleash the terrors on the Arabs and actualizing their evil plans and secret agendas. One would think if Holocaust really indeed happens, the likes of the Israeli would value and have greater respect for human life and property. Their action is totally invariance with what won them the broader supports for the establishment of the Jewish state from the international communities, most especially the USA and the Britain.

This lack of respect for human life has to stop right now, this cannot continue.

Should we not take the stand of a democracy and accept most on either side of this war want a two state solution? Or do we follow the example of our few "leaders" , who lie to bring us to war?

Good Point Arnie6446 - The American media is skewed heavily towards the Israeli's, in particular due to the long-standing alliance that began in the 1940's and the lobby Group AIPAC (American-Israeli Public Affairs Committee) which gives enormous amounts of money to the radio and televison stations to support their group. Israel only came into existence via the Zionist movement, which called Jews to "the Holy Land", a.k.a. Palestine. It wasn't long before the Israeli's attempted to kick out the residents in an attempt to claim "their" Holy Land. In reality, it was not, and has not been for CENTURIES, theirs ( It was in the BC times. BC times!). When reading articles and viewing information over this atrocious war, remember to have sympathy for the Palestinians.

Great, another handwringing comment by another selfhating Jewish academic. This time of all times, when in fact Israel is under less criticism for its actions than usual. Why? Because the world is beginning to realize the utter intransigence of its enemies. Do I care about the 1.5 million Gazans and their suffering? Not really. First they voted in a known terrorist organization for its government. Let them live with the consequences that were obvious from the start to everyone but them. Second, if the shoe were on the other foot, and the i.5 million Gazans had the upper hand, I assure you there would be precious few humanitarian relief columns going from gaza to Israel, to say the least. Idiot.
