Aaron David Miller | NEWSWEEK and the rest of those with the same Utopian belief in how wars are fought is the reason the free world will never win another war again ever!!

Hamss has vowed to destroy Isreal for religioius reasons. Hamas's Islamic interpretation claims Jews tried to kill gthe messiah and therefore it is their Islamic duty to destroy Isreal and all Jews. So unless someone or something can change Hamas's religious interpretation, I don't see how any cease fire or agreement would be permanent. If only they could agree to disagree on religious fundamentals, and respect each other's differences.

I don't understand why people think Isreal is still God's chosen people, they killed his son for crying out loud. Once christianity was established that ended there status as God's chosen people. So whatever they do militarily they act on there own will. There were plenty of wars they fought in bible times where they didn't even lift a fingure and won. Why? Because they were God's chosen people back then, but not now.

Muslims believe that Jesus was merely a prophet and not God's son. By your arguement, since Islam came after Christianity, then Islam supercedes Christianity. So I assume you are following the "True" faith and are a Muslim? In which case your bias against Israel is to be expected.

WOW, I SIT HERE AND READ ALL THESE COMMENTS POSTED, I really have to say something, first of all ,I am not for either side, just the right side, if i lived in tennessee and geogia was sending missles over my house i would want it destoyed, However if georgia was keeping me and my family in a concentration camp with no rights as a citizen, no way of being able to feed oo educate my children, If every move myself or family member was under deep scrutny, that i have no right as a citizen or a human being, if they treated everyone as the nazis treated the jews, and the rest of the world was not comming to our aid as a nation, then the only thing that is left would be for me and my family to do everything in my power to gain our freedom, we speak of terrorists, have we forgot how the jews, claimed palestine from great britian when it was the contrilling power, they didnt do it thru diplomacy, they were known as terrorists in the eyes of great britian, they bombed enough hotels back then , check your history, all i can say is let us be christians, and lead the way christ showed us how love all not some, i even heard people say that muslims dont believe in christ, ha ha ha, again read and learn, it is the jews that gave up christ , not the muslims, at least they recodnize that christ was a great profit, the jews dont even recodnize him at all, let us stop killing in the name of god, and start loving in the name of god, let us recodnize that all people are equall, not anything else, isreal has every right to exist, so do the palestinian people, so do black, chinese, every body has a right , its time we make isreal accontable for its actions, as we did germany, let us not turn our back on humans,

Excellent column, Mr. Miller. You couldn't be more correct. It's surprising to hear such an attitude within an American nation beholden to Israeli and American Jewish community interests.

I've never understood the moral high ground Israelis or the American Jewish community adopt when stating their belief in Israel's moral legitimacy in the current conflict. Historians will tell you the history of Israel and the Jewish people has been one of ethnically cleansing the Middle East lands they've entered of inhabitants and it's my educated opinion most of America's Middle East problems are due to America's morally-dubious position of backing Israel in its subjugation of the Palestinian people.

Sure, Israel has a right to exist, as does a Palestinian state, but imagine if millions of Mexicans had illegally immigrated into Texas during the mid-40's, fought and won a war of terrorism against the indigenous Texans and deported or forced 4 million of them to flee onto refugee camps in neighboring states - then you can comprehend what Israel has done to the Palestians and why organizations such as Hamas are resisting. I'd resist, too, had my family been killed, evicted and forced from my home while the internationally community stood by ad did not act. This is ethic cleansing pure and simple.

By backing Israel in its crimes, America has taken the moral 'low road' in this matter and undermined its moral legitmacy on the world stage - hence the moral outrage against America in Arab nations globally. America should not continue to favor Israel in this conflict. America must finally do the 'right thing' for American foreign policy and that means setting aside America's powerful Jewish lobby which has the United States not acting in its own best interest. America should support the return of evicted Palestianians to their lands, economically and politically forcing Israel into a viable Two-State Solution to resolve this conflict. Both states must be sovereign, economically and militarily viable and treated equally before international law. Otherwise, we simply persist in a situation whereby America restrains the Palestinian people while Israel sucker-punches them - the global community apathetically shaking its head in disgust.

I would like my political leaders to pursue American interests and not those of Israel or any other nation with large communities living in America. Imagine an America in which America's German, Irish or Mexican communities drove foreign policy on behalf of ancestral homelands. Ridiculous. But, it's exactly what's happening in Washington by America's Jewish Community. Wrong is wrong.

Today's Palestianian and Arab 'terrorist organizations' are simply unconventional resistance to Israel, unable to fight it directly in its conflict owing Israel's backing

It always seems that everyone wants to point to Isreal for their acts of aggression when if you look back over the years/centuries that they are not the aggesor. When will people understand that they are just defending their rights that nobody wants them to defend. If you will look in the Bible (am I allowed to write that word) that war has been and will always be in Gaza area.

Please get the spelling right (Hezbollah) . Why should Israel back down. They did not start this conflict. Hamas was shooting rockets into Israel. They would then hide by houses, schools and other public buildings. So how was Israel to defend their country? Just remember that very little was ever said about Hamas and the suicide bombers killing thousands for years in Israel. The last fact is When has Israel ever started a conflict? They just respond to aggressions against them.

actually, there are several ways to spell Hizbullah, Hezbollah, etc. You can read the different spellings on the web before jumping to the conclusion that the author spelled it incorrectly. Often times there are multiple spellings of words.

    • Posted By: aduncan2 @ 01/08/2009 6:33:11 PM

actually, hizbullah is a correct spelling of it. Hezbullah is correct, too along with hizbu'llah and hizballah...

Typical liberal bias against Israel. Hypocritical double standard at play here--par for the course for the liberal scum in the medial Israel has every right to defend itself. Hamas can make the fighting stop immediately by agreeing to stop unilateral unprovoked missile strikes, but it will not. Hamas has no interest in peace; never did, never will. Where was Newseek when Irael was being shelled by thousands of missiles? I guess pro-Western democracies do not merit our concern as much as the subhuman savages in Hamas do.

Thank you for the article. However, you are overlooking a few points. Number one it is Israel's land. How would you like for someone to come to America and in order to make peace tell you to give away the west coast of the United States? You concede and those people continue to fire rockets into Nevada, Idaho and other states and the world tells you it is your fault. Come on! Second, there will never be peace because it is not over land it is over religion. A president either democrat or republican is not going to make people change religions. So why don't we stand for the one who keeps bending over backwards to other who are trying to take over their land and way of living. By they way isn't that what the terrorists are trying to do to America. Should we concede to them?

if that is your argument, then, as a native American, I have a right to your land.

This is about the most worthless article that was ever written. Our ties with Isreal should be one sided. Why does an American President want to side with muslum terrorists?????Maybe we should think about who we want as a president before we vote NEXT TIME! Stupid!

All I can say is that if Hilter was alive today and he had his full Nazi army in tow and came up against Isreal. Hitler and his evil 3rrd Reign would be smoldering corspes rotting in the hot desert sun. You cannot defeat Isreal, it's better to seek thier peace or else you will be toast.

fairgof stated in his posting that the jews carved out a state for themselves and then commited aggression, cruelty, and brutality, land grabbing, etc. He should read his history before making inacurate statements. It was the U.N. that created the country of israel. It was the arab states that didnt like that so they decided to invade israel to "push them into the sea".Israel beat them back and pushed into there countrys[This must be the land grabbing].Since then Israel has been willing to give it back if the arabs could sign a peace deal that they would all live up to.Almost weekly Bombings,Terrorist Attacks,Mortar Shellings, and Rocket Attacks, etc, etc and Israel is at fault? No other country would tolarate such aggression against it without responding to protect itself.I would love to see peace in the middle east, but make sure you put the blame where it belongs.

that's not really an accurate history of the situation. Jews and Arabs lived together in the area peacefully until Jews started migrating to the area to establish a national homeland in the late 19th century, at which point the area was still part of the Ottoman Empire. In WWI, the Brits took over and were supposed to leave it as an international zone, but then declared support for the establishment of a Jewish homeland. More Jews started migrating there, the Arabs revolted, the Brits capped immigration to the region, then the Holocaust happened and there was a question of what to do with the Jewish refugees. Other countries (including the US) were not willing to take in the refugees, so some got sent back to Germany to be slaughtered and others were sent to Israel. Israel/Palestine at this point in 1947 was still under British control until the Israeli's declared independence from Britain, Britain decided to pull out of the area because they said they couldn't reach an agreement that was acceptable to the Arabs and the Jews, and then in the UN partitioned the land into an Arab state and a Jewish state. The Arabs attacked Israel, lost and then their economy collapsed and 250,000 fled or were expelled from the area. It's been going on ever since then. There is plenty of blame to go around on all sides and many other countries.

The author talks about Israel causing disproportion stress on the Palistinians. Does he think that living under the threat of dailly rocket bombardment is not stressful? All Hamas has to do is to stop sending rockets indiscriminately into Israel, agree to international monitoring, recognize Israel's right to exist, stop using schools, hospitals, and mosques to hide and launch weapons, then they wlll have peace and economic development.
The author mentions the settlements as an obstacle to peace. When Israel left Gaza, three years ago, they dismantled the settlements there. This did not result in peace or recognition of Israel.
During the second World War,the RAF killed more Germans by firebombing German cities than were killed by the atomic bomb at Hiroshima. This was far out of proportion to the number of Brits killed by German rockets. There was no outcry about the number of civilians killed then. Why is it that Jews and Israel must have this double standard?
Even though we have "smart bombs" today, they still can't distiguish a terrorist from a civilian at 10,000 feet.
