The bottom line is Israel is defending itself against the sam e kind of maniacs that caused 9/11 in this country. The Muslims in that area want to kill everybody that is not Muslim, and do not accept Israel having their own land. They therefore attack them relentlessly unitil Israel has enough and defends itself. I ask people in the US, would we sit here and allow Canada, or Mexico to shoot rockets into our country daily and not respond?

Gee,...how WOULD we feel if Mexico decided they wanted parts of Texas, and decided to confiscate land and forcibly relocate Texans? As a gun-toting Texan I'm going to DEFEND my land against occupation!

      • Posted By: gelliott5949@yahoo.com @ 01/08/2009 5:12:17 PM

That's an excellant statement -once you consider though that Texas-along with much of California belonged to the Mexican government but was stolen through iillegal land schemes-and the centuries old land deeds that the Mexican people had -were thrown out of court in the best interests of a nation that wanted the sources in Texas and California for themselves-mainly oil & gold. The U.S. government would not defend Israel if they could get around it-there's too much oil to consider.

US support to this talk, was the major cause for 9/11.

Stop poisoning the world with the talk about Muslims want to kill everybody, Islam translation is Arabic is peace. And for centuries Muslims and Christians lived peacefully in Jerusalem and the rest parts of the world.

Israel is defending it self, but it started it by provoking Hamas with the assassinations and the siege, which is considered as an act of hostility by all. So Israel must stop playing the victim, while its the butcher

If Obama gets tough with Israel, it'll be perceived as weakness and taking sides with the Palestinians and will literally rape the relationship it has taken decades for the US to develop. We don't need to falter at this critical time in repairing our international image of strength in backing our allies.

  • Posted By: missourigirl @ 01/08/2009 3:09:37 PM

Ridiculous to pressure Israel, when the problem is Islamist extremism. Israel has always been ready for peace. The Arabs need a big attitude adjustment, and until they start teaching their children about tolerance and co-existence, rather than hatred and murder of Jews, there will never be peace. Obama should focus on getting the UN schools in the Palestinian territories to stop employing terrorists and to stop teaching extremism. That would be a start.

      Oh Yeah....

Israel is teaching the Arabs how to Tolerate...

They are Really showing How Tolerant and Peaceful they are..Hmm

They hold no Hate, Animosity, Predjudice, Bias Or ill Will towards their [Enemy]

Israel is without Spot, Wrinkle, Blemish or Imperfections...

All those Negative Feelings & Atiitude Belong to the Palestinians.

Let's do the math. Since the Oslo accords in 1992 the amount of aid that the Palestinians took in was about $17 Billion. iF THEY HAD TAKEN THAT MONEY AND INVESTED IT BUILDING AND WORK THEY WOULDN'T BE THE BASKET CASES THEY ARE NOW. THE TRUTH IS THAT THE PALESTINIANS ARE MORE INTERESTED IN KILLING JEWS THEN MAKING A LIVING. PEOPLE LIKE MR. MILLER ALLOW THAT TO HAPPEN. BEFORE ISRAEL ALLOWED MR. ARAFAT AND HIS GANG BACK IN ISRAEL THE PALESTINIAN INCOME LEVEL HAD REACHED TO $8,500 PER PERSON, AN UNHEARD OF NUMBER IN MOST ARAB COUNTRIES. AFTER ARAFAT TOOK OVER THET NUMBER WENT DOWN TO $1200 A YEAR OR LESS. THE ISRAELIS CREATED INDUSTRIAL PARKS THAT EMPLOYED PALESTINIANS FROM GAZA AND THE OTHER TERRITORIES BUT AGAIN THEY WERE MORE INTERESTED IN KILLING JEWS THEN WORK. THESE PARKS ARE NOW SHUT DOWN BECAUSE OF THE SECURITY THREATS FROM THE PALESTINIANS. GOLDA MEIR SAID IT BEST PEACE WILL ONLY COME WHEN THE PALESTIANS LOVE THEIR CHILDREN MORE THEN THEY HATE OURS. THE PALESTINIANS HAVE NEVER MISSED AN OPPORTUNITY TO MISS AN OPPORTUNITY. JOE FROM MIAMI.

Israel has the right to defend itself as a sovereign nation. Hamas started this conflict long ago and Israel is just fighting back and being labeled "a bully". To my way of thinking, if anything President elect Obama should let Israel finish what was started and stay out of their way. I agree with grandpa5.. well said...

  • Posted By: MtnMan14 @ 01/08/2009 5:06:23 PM

This piece just made me want to tear my hair out. All that needs to happen for mid-East peace is for the countries there to acknowledge Israel's right to exist as a nation. As long as Hamas, Hezbollah, and countries like Iran are around there will be no peace, I don't care how tought Obama gets with Israel of the Arabs. Israel shouldn't be "punishing" the Palestinians, the Palestinians who put Hamas in power in Gaza and support their terrorism, when we have been punishing Cuba that way for years and they aren't lobbing rockets into Miami or kidnapping US soldiers?? We nearly had WWIII when Cuba came close to having rockets. Aaron David Miller clearly needs to get a grip on reality.

I am both shocked and sadden by this article. And if I'm not mistaken, Israel was founded for the price of 6.3 million lives. Lives that were taken because some one held the view that it was time to get tough on the Jews. Remember, it wasn't the Jews or Israelis who united and decided to fly airplanes into the twin towers, it was the same folks who fuel the hatred of Hammas. Let me remind you who danced and cheered in the streets on 9/11, it wasn't the Israelis.

    • Posted By: Jewess @ 01/08/2009 5:04:10 PM

Thank you. I ask all people to remember 9/11. Those of you who are not from NY might have thought of it as horrific; but still too far away. I am not preaching hatred against Islam. I am not preaching hatred against Arabs. Israel had war and attacks daily when becoming a country in the late 40's. After the horros of WWII, these same surviving Jews had to fight for their freedom of land? And they are still fighting? Israel is a tiny country. Why can't we have it? I believe the Arabs who live in Haifa do okay and much better than their Palestinian counter-parts? Palestinians- wake up! You are being used as a cheap ploy for the rest of the world by terrorists. I recall watching you dance in the streets and smile while my towers were burning in smoke and people jumped to their deaths. You claimed it was because we would finally (as Americans) understand what it was like. Every Israeli has to join the military and do service (few get permission to not do this). Believe me- Israelis will kick your A** and America should want such an ally.

I am a non Arab Muslim, trying to understand my religion and things in general. The more I understand my religion, the more closer I feel towards the Jews, Christians, and good people in general. The fact there are Jews and Christians in the world does increase my faith in God, and I hope that with time and genuine effort for peace and harmony and for the pleasure of one God of all of us, we can all help increase 'goodness' in the world and reduce 'evil'.

I do wish that so many things were different in the Muslim / Arab world. However, What Israel is doing and has been doing to Palestinians, with the help of the US & Co makes me extremely angry and sad.

If the scenario was reversed, ie, If it was the Arabs who came back to Israel / Palestine from all over the world since the forties because the countries they had been living for however many years were killing them off, and then carved out a country over a Jewish state, and then commit the kind of aggression, cruelty, and brutality, land grabbing, etc etc with economic assistance and high tech weapons from the US, I would feel just as angry and sad.

The world is getting rid of the war mongering Bushes, the Blairs, and the Howards, and electing the Kevin Rudds, and Barrack Obamas, so there is hope. I don't know much about Gordon Brown, but I've witnessed a gigantic shift away from war mongerers first in Australia and then in the USA. The rhetoric of 'good vs. evil', and 'you are either with us or against us' are no longer selling in most parts of the world. But Israel and Bush and their supporters are evidently still pushing the line hard.

I mean most of the world can really see quite clearly the atrocities and disproportionate terror unleashed on the Palestinians, yet it amazes me to see how many people commenting here are taking so much offence at the article that suggests that Obama should be even handed in his approach to the problem. I mean its not like the writer has suggested US attacks Israel for its wanton oppression is it? (which is what some one should do given the current genocide Israel is committing)

Which ever standards you use to measure the atrocities and their roots from either side, or how far back in history you want to start from, to my knowledge Israel is the bigger offender by a HUGE margin. The hate and hue and cry created by the pro Israeli comments to this article is unfortunately just an explanation for the status quo.

I have had people tell / argue with me that holocaust was justified and the Jews got what they deserved, as a believer I simply can not digest that, nobody deserves persecution, so please stop doing it to the Palestinians.

    -Peace.

i think the liberal media should shut up and butt out. we can't be tough enough on the Arabs who would kill any of us if given the chance. Isreal is our first line of defense against a serious threat.

      Gaza By The Numbers
Middle East | Posted by: Zahir Janmohamed, December 30, 2008 at 3:25 PM
A snapshot of Gaza by the numbers taken from Amnesty International's Blog

      Humanitarian Assistance

Movement in and out of Gaza is all but impossible and supplies of food, water, sewage treatment, basic health care have been drastically affected by the blockade of aid. Food prices are rising and wheat, flour, baby milk, and rose 34%, 30%, and 20.5% respectively during the period May-June 2007 alone.
Prior to the blockade (implemented after Hamas took over total adminstration over Gaza in June 2007), around 250 trucks carrying aid entered Gaza each day.
As of March 2008, that number was reduced to 45.
According to UN figures reported in the Guardian, that number dropped to just 5 in December.
Most recently, the Israeli government prevented a Libyan ship carrying 3000 tons of aid from entering Gaza.
Poverty and Dependency on Food Aid

Number of people living in absolute poverty in Gaza in 2008: 80%
Number of people living in absolute poverty in Gaza in 2006: 63%
In 2007, households were spending 62% of their income on food.
In 2004, households were spending 37% of their income on food.
As of March 2008, there were over 1.1 million people???three quarters of Gaza???who are dependent on food aid. In less than ten years, the numbers of families who depending on UNRWA food aid has increased ten-fold
      Unemployment

In June 2005, there were 3,900 factories in Gaza employing 35,000 people.
In December 2007, there were just 195, employing only 1,700.
      Unemployment is close to 40%.
40,000 agriculture works who depend on cash crops now have no income.
In September 2000, 24,000 Gazans crossed into Israel to seek cheap labor. Now that number is zero.
      Schools, Electricity, Medical Supplies

In January 2008, UNICEF reported that schools in Gaza had been cancelling classes that required high energy consumption like IT, science lab, and extra-curricular classes.
Hospitals cannot generate electricity to keep lifesaving equipment working or to generate oxygen, while 40-50 million liters of sewage continues to pour into the sea daily.
Hospitals are currently experiencing power cuts lasting for 8-12 hours a day.
There is currently a 60-70 percent shortage reported in the diesel required for hospital power generators.
According to the World Health Organization, the proportion of patients given permits to exit Gaza for medical care dropped from 89.3% in January 2007 to 64.3% in December 2007.
Many of those who are given permits are blocked at the crossing itself. In October 2007 alone, the WHO confirmed that 20 patients died because they were denied access to refereal services. Five of these deaths were children.
(Unless otherwise indicated, all facts in this post are from the report ???The Gaza Strip: A Humanitarian implosion??? co-authored by Amnesty International, Oxfam, Medcins de Monde UK, CAFOD, Save the Children UK, TroCAIRE, CARE, and Christian Aid).

Wow...reading these discussions shows me that there will never be peace between these groups. So many people think that it is this group or that group that is the issue. Facts, as far as I can see them, is that my god is better than your god, you killed my brother so I must kill you and everyone one love. My GOD, cut it out already. Read a little Dr. Seuss and the Star Bellied Sneetchs. Feed your neighbors, stop lobbing rockets, ride a bike, swim in the sea...Cut it out already. Or maybe I do not have the political understandings of all the extraordinary minds running this crap now.

The views of the author is absolutely correct. For the past 43 years America was supporting Israel in all aspects whether they do right or worng. US was not in any thing criticising the Israrel ain any deals. Do they (Israel) wroth this much trust and support from US? I dont think. They think they are a bit superior than anybody becuase they know that no matter what they do US will support them. It does not mean that they should take all the hits from militants. They have their right to protect their country and people. Other coutries also suffer from militants - such US, India, France etc.. They dont go and kill all innocent people because of militants.

In the whole world if we just look at the history - anybody claims they are 'Chosen' or they are superior than other, those sect usually disliked by others. Probably that is the reason Jews were disliked almost all over the world!!

We need to be sure that we are praying that God gives President Elect Obama the knowledge and wisdom to do what is right.

    "Portrayed as God Chosen People"

"That The World Should Pay Homage to them"

"That they live in the So Called "Holy Land" ..

As if other Lands-Countries are not "Holy"

As though they are Innocent and Justified, like today, of doing No Wrong.

As though they are justified in Every Military Act.

"We are being Threatened on a Daily Basis and are So Helpless"

Though Israel has all the Nuclear Weapons, Biological & Chemical Weapons and the Superior Military Might...

While the Palestinians are Living in Poverty and Despair, they are the Real Threat and Danger.

You asked the rhetorical question, "But does it make sense for America to support its policy of punishing Hamas by making life unbearable for 1.5 million Gazans by denying aid and economic development?" then you incorrectly answer, "The answer is no." Did not these very same people vote for the Hamas as leaders, cheer for the Hamas when they murder innocent Isrealis (unprovoked), and support these terrorist murderers. Is it not true that they, the Gazans that you call them are in fact on Isreali land and are overly dependent on the very people that they hate so much? Why would any reasonable, thinking person distinguish the "Gazans" from the Hamas? Everything our president does or says is determined as the voice of America! Gazans = Hamas

  • Posted By: Anyuta01 @ 01/08/2009 4:52:53 PM

Much of the world buys the line -- peddled by the Palestinians and the Arab Muslim world and, indeed, many Western countries -- that paints Israel as the bad "Goliath" that "stole" the land from the "Palestinians."

Israel gave Gaza self-rule in 1994, unilaterally withdrawing the last of its citizens and soldiers from Gaza in 2005. Hamas, voted into power via free elections in 2006, fought and defeated their political and military rival, Fatah, to seize de facto control of Gaza in 2007. In the past eight years, Hamas has fired more than 10,000 rockets and mortars into Israel -- 7,000 of them after Israel's 2005 withdrawal. With improved technology -- reportedly assisted by Iran -- Hamas' rockets can now fly 24 miles before impact and explosion, thereby threatening, injuring and killing more and more Israelis living in southern Israel.

Gaza truce broken as Israeli raid kills six Hamas gunmen
      guardian.co.uk, Wednesday 5 November 2008 14.32 GMT
A four-month ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian militants in Gaza was in jeopardy today after Israeli troops killed six Hamas gunmen in a raid into the territory.

Hamas responded by firing a wave of rockets into southern Israel, although no one was injured. The violence represented the most serious break in a ceasefire agreed in mid-June, yet both sides suggested they wanted to return to atmosphere of calm.

Israeli troops crossed into the Gaza Strip late last night near the town of Deir al-Balah. The Israeli military said the target of the raid was a tunnel that they said Hamas was planning to use to capture Israeli soldiers positioned on the border fence 250m away. Four Israeli soldiers were injured in the operation, two moderately and two lightly, the military said.

One Hamas gunman was killed and Palestinians launched a volley of mortars at the Israeli military. An Israeli air strike then killed five more Hamas fighters. In response, Hamas launched 35 rockets into southern Israel, one reaching the city of Ashkelon.

"This was a pinpoint operation intended to prevent an immediate threat," the Israeli military said in a statement. "There is no intention to disrupt the ceasefire, rather the purpose of the operation was to remove an immediate and dangerous threat posted by the Hamas terror organisation."

In Gaza, a Hamas spokesman, Fawzi Barhoum, said the group had fired rockets out of Gaza as a "response to Israel's massive breach of the truce".

"The Israelis began this tension and they must pay an expensive price. They cannot leave us drowning in blood while they sleep soundly in their beds," he said.

The attack comes shortly before a key meeting this Sunday in Cairo when Hamas and its political rival Fatah will hold talks on reconciling their differences and creating a single, unified government. It will be the first time the two sides have met at this level since fighting a near civil war more than a year ago.

Until now it had appeared both Israel and Hamas, which seized full control of Gaza last summer, had an interest in maintaining the ceasefire. For Israel it has meant an end to the daily barrage of rockets landing in southern towns, particularly Sderot. For Gazans it has meant an end to the regular Israeli military raids that have caused hundreds of casualties, many of them civilian, in the past year. Israel, however, has maintained its economic blockade on the strip, severely limiting imports and preventing all exports from Gaza.

Ehud Barak, the Israeli defence minister, had personally approved the Gaza raid, the Associated Press said. The Israeli military concluded that Hamas was likely to want to continue the ceasefire despite the raid, it said. The ceasefire was due to run for six months and it is still unclear whether it will stretch beyond that limit.

Anti-Semite,..oh please,...Give me a break! I'm so tired of some American' s lack of knowledge on this issue. I am a CHRISTIAN Palestian whose parents immigrated from the Middle East (Ramallah and Jerusalem's Old City) in 1955. We still own property in Ramallah and have many relatives still living in PALESTINE. Until Americans understand what it is like to have your HOME and LAND confiscated by Israel you will never know the depth of our distrust of both the extremist Muslims and Jews. The Holocaust is remembered and crammed down our throats everyday because Hollywood and most media outlets are owned and run by Jews,....I wonder when Steven Speilberg will make a blockbuster movie about the atrocities perpetrated by the Jews against the Palestinians???? It is so easy for us as Americans to demonize the Palestinians and see them only as terrorists. I have never known a terrorist, none of my family are terrorists, and my father was the hardest working, family-oriented man I have ever known. My father and mother were FORCED to leave the home my Grandfather built and leave the land that he tilled in order to have any chance at a real life and family.

JEWISH SETTLEMENTS HAVE NO RIGHT TO BE IN RAMALLAH AND GAZA!!!!!!!

I'm sorry some people react this way, and I'm sorry for the plight of so many Palestinians, but I do believe that the main meat of this article is wrong. It isn't the behavior of most Palestinians that is bringing this all to a head, it is Hamas and thier actions. They would be taken better, and have more ground to stand on if they stopped terrorizing the Israeli populous and actually tried going to the U.N. and having a civilized conversation. Unfortunately, people on both sides are too full of hate.

you talk about israel doing this and doing that through the thing, then get down to the last short paragraph and oh yeah hamas needs to do this. the liberial media should just stop you guys only start writing after israel has had enough and starts doing something about.! if the US would stay out of it the israels will take care of the problem!l you all the countries around israel want a homeland for the palestinians but do you hear them saying ok you can take some of our land we will give it to you. no you dont! the whole purpose of all this is to destroy israel so when are you people going to understand that. i tell you something else when we won WWII if you look at history we bomb cities where people lived why? so the war would be over sooner. its always israel that needs to do something to please the arabs, hogwash!!

    • Posted By: GhostNinja @ 01/08/2009 4:47:08 PM

      1. who are these sinister "liberal media"? its amazing how people blame this imaginary group of twisted journalists whenever there's a differing opinion or news story

      2. we are not in WW2, we dont use carpet bombs or flamethrowers, our weapons (and consequently Israel's) are so precise there should be no excuse for this massive civilian casualty.

      3. this is not a war... the carnage and destruction is so lopsided i dont understand how people can even consider it such. this is a massacre. why are innocent Israeli lives valued more than Palestinians''?

      4. please understand that this war is in now way beneficial to Israel or its innocent civilians who will be faced with the brunt of any future acts of terrorism. the hatred, anger, and frustration that grows out this conflict will only raise the prospect of future suicide bombers and mortars. You honestly believe that killing little children is worth the price of taking out 1 or 2 Hamas terrorists?

      5. why do people COMPLETELY disregard the fact that Israel cut off basic humanitarian supplies to Gaza?
