I have to agree with Blackbelt54 and RDFredrick. As long as these Fanatics continue their course there will be no opportunity for any kind of lasting peace. The world press continues to ignore one important fact: The women and children that the press wants to protect are also willingly acting as human bombs, smugglers and shields. Many combatants wear no uniforms or other obvious identifications as combatants. Hamas would not be successful without the support of the population. Israel needs the support of anyone in the world that is a target of Muslim aggression, not the ignorant disdain for collateral damage. Those people celebrate every "infidel" death as a victory in all these places regardless of the status of the casualty. Why does the press and the UN impose a double standard?

    To slabron,

Besides the fact that the Palestinians have continually smuggled weapons and ammunition in their ???humanitarian aid,??? they receive million of Euros each year from Europe. What have they done with that money? Fund camps to teach children to throw rocks and to promote homicide bombings; create a TV show for children that promotes killing Jews; invest in anti-Israel PR that has continually lied and spread misinformation (some of which commentators here have repeated verbatim). Is it reasonable to provide more money for these purposes? Were it to go to the people who truly need it, that is one thing, but that is sadly not the case.

This author must be an idiot. Possibly he should go live in Israel and be under the constant threat of annihilation. How can he be an advisor for the Democratic and Republican administrations? With this sort of position and his attitude we as Americans should be very afraid because of the Arab sentiment toward us. We would be next and be expected to ???live with it???. The Israelis are fighting for their very existence. We should and must support them.

Reading the discussions, I find one common thread. Most of those commenting are unwilling to take a broad and long-range view of the situation and there is much "begging of the question" to support their views, no atter what their viewpoint.

This is a complicated situation and, because there is the added element of fanatism, including a fanatic hatred of what is seen as a Western/European trespass on the Middle East (the hatred started with the Crusades), and several powers manipulating the situation for their own gain.

Overall, I do not see a willingness amoung many of the critical players to accept the continued existance of Israel, so peace seems unlikely. I do not see Israel behaving any more strongly than any other nation whose very existance has been threatened. Indeed, nations have gone to war for much less provocation. I also note that those who have made peace with Israel, or at least accepted their existance, seem to have been treated well by tIsrael. I recently read an article talking about the growing economic prosperity amoung West Bank Palestinians. The issue seems to me to be able to get moderates on both sides to work together. However, when the government is dedicated to the distruction of another country, this is going to be difficult to arrange.

So the crusades were the beginging of history??? Perhaps you should read up on some history predating that time, and you would understand alittle better.

Here again we have JEWS twisting facts and lying. The world would be better off without Jews. See the economic problem in the uS mainly created by the Jews lying and bypassing orderly laws.

You know else I see here in this article? This article is written stating Obama needs to get tough on Israel and help find another way to bring peace in the middle east. But here is an ignorant man who writes an article ridiculous as this to do nothing more than start controversy and bring division of opinions amoungst amaerican citizens. Just read all the opposing comments. Mr. Miller screams peace and spreads controversy.

    Israel's Chemical Weapons

Israel has signed but not ratified the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC). There are speculations that a chemical weapons program might be located at the Israel Institute for Biological Research (IIBR) in Ness Ziona .

190 liters of dimethyl methylphosphonate, a CWC schedule 2 chemical used in the synthesis of Sarin nerve gas, was discovered in the cargo of El Al Flight 1862 after it crashed in 1992 en route to Tel Aviv. Israel insisted the material was non-toxic, was to have been used to test filters that protect against chemical weapons, and that it had been clearly listed on the cargo manifest in accordance with international regulations. The shipment was from a U.S. chemical plant to the IIBR under a U.S. Department of Commerce license.

In 1993, the U.S. Congress Office of Technology Assessment WMD proliferation assessment recorded Israel as a country generally reported as having undeclared offensive chemical warfare capabilities.[3] Former US deputy assistant secretary of defense responsible for chemical and biological defense, Bill Richardson, said in 1998 "I have no doubt that Israel has worked on both chemical and biological offensive things for a long time ... There's no doubt they've had stuff for years".

    Israel's Biological Weapons

Israel is not a signatory to the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC). It is assumed that the Israel Institute for Biological Research in Ness Ziona develops vaccines and antidotes for chemical and biological warfare. While it is believed that Israel is not currently producing chemical or biological weapons, there remains speculation that Israel's ability to start production and dissemination, if necessary, remains active.

In 1993, the U.S. Congress Office of Technology Assessment WMD proliferation assessment recorded Israel as a country generally reported as having an undeclared offensive biological warfare program.

To put it quite bluntly Fayetaye, you're full of cowplop. Quite frankly, most Americans are sick and tired of all the whining and crying coming out of the muslim world. It's your government of Hamas that's oppressing you and you're completely blinded by that fact. Tell them to stop sending suicide bombers into Israel and just maybe you won't have to worry about being stopped at checkpoints. Tell them to stop sending suicide bombers into Israel and just maybe you'll be trusted to rush your gravely sick and dying ones to a hospital without the Israelis having to worry about YOU being a bomb instead. Tell them to stop shooting rockets at Israeli citizens while being embedded within the civilian population and perhaps you won't even have sick and dying loved ones to begin with. Tell them to stop with their rhetoric of destroying Israel and just maybe you'll have full access to food or drink. Fayetaye, if you Palestinians really want peace then you'll have to grow up, stop your temper tantrums and start getting angry at the right people instead of siding with them because they're brother muslims.

No known nuclear weapons test has been conducted within Israel, although the boosted weapons shown in Vanunu's photographs may well have required testing. It is also possible that the Israelis received results from French nuclear testing in the 1960s. In June 1976, the West Germany Army magazine, Wehrtechnik, claimed that a 1963 underground test took place in the Negev, and other reports indicate that some type of non-nuclear test, perhaps a zero yield or implosion test, may have occurred on 2 November 1966. In September 1979, a Vela satellite detected a double flash of light near South Africa, accompanied by underwater acoustic[citation needed] and ionospheric effects. It has been speculated that this flash of light may have come from a 3 kiloton oceanic nuclear explosion, which may have been a joint nuclear test between Israel and South Africa (see and Israel-South Africa relations). However, recently declassified information about the event concludes that it "was probably not from a nuclear explosion, although [it cannot be ruled] out that this signal was of nuclear origin.

In an interview the Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert appeared to have admitted that Israel possesses nuclear weapons. However, an Israeli spokesman later stated that Olmert meant to give no such statement, and there has been no change in policy on nuclear weapons.

On 1 February 2007, President Chirac of France commented on the nuclear ambitions of Iran, hinting on possible nuclear countermeasures from Israel:

"Where will it drop it, this bomb? On Israel? It would not have gone 200 metres into the atmosphere before Tehran would be razed".

In arguing that the United States should directly talk to Iran rather than through intermediaries, former President Jimmy Carter stated in May 2008 that Israel has "150 or more" Nuclear Weapons in its Arsenal

Bottom Line Israel has to be dealt with.. Obama has said it before. Just because we are friends will not mean you can let your friend know when they are wrong.
One of the many threats to America's national security is AIPAC. This group cannot be allowed to undermine this country and its policies any longer. With Obama
at the helm they will not. He does not fear them. They fear him. He is a friend of Israel, make no mistake. But he is a better friend to peace.

Next the American Media needs to balance out it???s reporting on Day to day life in this conflict. The BS reports we see today show Israel as the victim that had no
hand in the actions against it. What Americans don???t see is the hell non Israelis have to endure at the hand of the Israelis. This struggle leads to violence.
The problem is that one side has way more power then the other. It???s so sad to see the lost of life on both sides.

IF the media would report the facts and not fear the backlash of the powerful Jewish population and influence, the American people would have a better understanding.
The Jewish filter of American news media has to be removed. On the flip side, the media should not be used as a propaganda tool for either side.

Next??? The missile and suicide bombings have to stop. They have to come to an end. Israelis have a right to be safe and secure. Hardliners on both sides have taking advantage
of this conflict for much too long.

There must be a two state solution, there must be right of return. The settlements have to come down. And Israel bust be a safe place to live??? Just like Gaza, the West Bank???
and any other disputed piece of land.

Obama will not play words games??? watch on the 22 January. The Middle East will see. He will call Israel out. He will call the Palestinians out and he will give our media the
freedom to lift the filter off of the media so we can really see who the victims are.

The world supports peace. To get peace will have to make sacrifices not war and then wonder why there is not peace. The killing has to stop on both sides.
Obama will more then likely take a middle of the road stance. He will not be pro-Israel he will be pro-peace and pro-American. It???s about time we have a leader that
puts our interest ahead of AIPACS and others???!

    Come on 22 Jan !

When was the last time the Woodrow Wilson Center was hit by a rocket or a suicide bomber? Once that happens you may change your prospective on this situation.

    Israel's Nuclear Weapons Capability

Israel is not going to Pushed into the Sea or taken out of the Middle East...

    That Con Game is OVER

Israel is Threatening to All Around it and beyond and they have [Illegally Obtained Nuclear Weapons] having no Permission to make Nuclear Weapons, Never Sanctioned to have Nuclear Weapons or Possess Nuclear Weapons...

They also Possess Chemical & Biological Weapons as well.

The Poor Helpless Nation, Surrounded by Enemies is the Biggest Con ever perpetuated.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israel_and_weapons_of_mass_destruction

Current estimates of Israel's nuclear stockpile range from slightly below 100 to about 200 nuclear warheads. According to Nuclear Threat Initiative, based on Vanunu's information, Israel has approximately 100???200 nuclear explosive devices by 1980 and the Jericho missile delivery system. A United States Defense Intelligence Agency report (leaked and published in the book Rumsfeld's War: The Untold Story of America's Anti-Terrorist Commander by journalist Rowan Scarborough in 2004) estimates the number of weapons at 82. U.S. intelligence sources in the late 1990s estimated 75???130 weapons; Federation of American Scientists believes that Israel "could have produced enough plutonium for at least 100 nuclear weapons, but probably not significantly more than 200 weapons". The difference might lie in the amount of material Israel has on store versus assembled weapons, and estimates as to how much material the weapons actually use (which depends on their sophistication).

Israel has operated three modern German-built Dolphin-class submarines since 1999. Various reports indicate that these submarines are equipped with American-made Harpoon missiles modified to carry small nuclear warheads[28] and/or, and more possible, medium range (1500-2400km) larger Israeli-made "Popeye Turbo" cruise missiles, originally developed by Israel for air-to-ground strike capability.

I'm sick of terrorrist organizations, I'm sure Israelis are more so. I think it's about time for peaceful Arabs to do something about those other Arabs hiding amungst them, or take cover.

Your views in the media could not be more incorrect. Way to be a Monday morning quarterback. The Israeli people have had to deal with more broken promises while maintaining the highest regard for the welfare of their neighbors who's ranks include a significant portion of individuals dead set on the total removal of the Jewish state. Israel has made great strides towards providing infrastructure, housing and engaging in commerce with their Arab neighbors. This, while being persistently attacked by the same people they aim to help.
The media can not skew the reality of PLO and Hamas fighters using human sheilds in an effort to stage their attacks on Israeli soil. This is the face of modern warfare in an urban environment. The enemy does not put the same value on human life as the defenders. When Israel has gone to such lengths as to call individuls known to reside in areas where
PLO or Hamas millitants are hiding out prior to bombarding those targets, in an effort to preserve loss of life to innocents, how can you say they are acting unfairly. I would contend that it is far more debilitating to the Israeli people to live under constant fear of attack by ALL of their neighbors.
As far as US involvement, I would say that they are acting correctly and perhaps with too much lieniency towards Hamas, Hezbullah or any other terrorist regime. It is getting quite old dealing with the same old BS year in and year out
The rest of the world has sat back and watched as the US has laid down the hammer of justice to every one elses benefit while cowereing in the corner trying not to be noticed. We do the wolds dirty work then get all the flack.
I would put a bullet in the head of a dog that repeatedly attacked my children in my yard let alone terrorists that have no regard for human life, including the lives of their own people.
Enough of your ***, passifist b.s.
It is not a crime to defend yourself. All, "innocents", should be given an escort out of there. After that, bring them hell!!!
And you in the media shoudl grow a pair and recognize why you have the freedom to write whatever you like. Your freedom of speech was paid for in blood! Why don't you write about the obious anti-semitism and rampant racism that still lingers. In just the last three months we still see how many Americans and others are predjudice against Blacks, and Jews. From Obama's election to Israel's plight, we still have a long way to go as a HUMAN race.
Long live Israel and all peace loving peoples of the world. F-the media!

This article is so typical of the biased liberal media in the US. If Obama does what he should regarding Israel (and he probably won't), he should take a firm stand with Israel against those who threaten her and deny her right to exist. He should ensure that Arab nations are not run by terrorist organizations like Hamas and Hezbollah. It does not make any sense to me that Israel should not have a right to defend herself against the ones who would randomly bomb her cities and send in suicide bombers to kill inocent people.
If Obama fails to stand firm with Israel, the Jewish commuinity in the US will regret the fact that the vast majority of Jews in the US voted for him.
