A lot of people in the U. S. don't know which country is in occupied territory.

It has always been easy to blame Israel (the Jews) when there is a problem. How many times should Israel turn the other cheek? How would the US respond to any attack from-let's sa Mexico? Many believe the US stole Cal., Az., New Mexico, and Texas from Mexico in the 1840's. Oh-I forgot-the US sent General Pershing to go after the attackers!
When people take time to build a nation they won't sent their children out to kill themselves for a lost hateful cause. Did Newsweek really believe Israel would sit back as 6000 rockets fell from the sky? Woiuld it be ok for Israel to lauch 6000 rockets into Gaza?

Hispanics were not displaced to refugee camps and delegated as second hand citizens in New Mexico, Arizona, California and California. They also have the right to own and lease land. It is illegal for police to shoot and kill Mexican protesters too. Hispanics are not considered "the enemy within" as in Israel. Hispanics are not starving and denied food and medical care either.

Sorry to tell you guys, but you only get the wrong publicity. Maybe you should think that the biggest problem is that these palestinians have NO HOME NO LAND NO FUTURE anymore. I think this matter can clearly justify their actions. I guess if your home land is occupied for good, you would behave the exact same way... Try to have an objective point of view... One more thing, Hamas was elected in the last palestinian elections with a majority of more than 70% of the palestinians... So I think they clearly reflect the palestinian point of view...

Helloooo? Israel is not some big Golieth whomping on a little David. Hamas chooses to continue gorilla warfare and hide behind the skirts of their women and blankets of their babies by positioning themselves in neighborhoods and mosques. Shame on them. What heartless bastards. And even when Israel has had enough she has dropped leaflets warning the people to leave so they wouldn't be hurt. I heard some t.v. reporter say they had nowhere to go. WHAT?? They're not landlocked. They're not barricaded in. They're not being gunned down as they leave the city. AND Israel is stopping their attack for two-three hours everyday to allow humanitarian aid!!! Come ON! What military leader from the Palestinian peoples would even consider such an act of humanity?? WHAT MILITARY LEADER OF ANY ENDEAVOR WOULD CONSIDER SUCH AN ACT OF HUMANITY?
Newsforyou said that the Arab countries in the region could help the 'Palestinians' establish a homeland etc. I wish the world would take note of that fact. Wherever they live in countries surrounding Israel, they have never been incorporated into them. The fact is, they have more freedoms and rights in Israel than they do in Syria or Lebanon.
I would like to suggest that people go to Amazon.com and order a book called The Politically Incorrect Guide to the Middle East by Martin Sieff who worked in the Middle East for 40 years. Forty years ought to give him a point of view that we'll never gain from the nightly news.

Israel in in the right here Accept it!!!!! We would be doing the same thing they are if it was us. God Bless Israel.
And if Obama decides to turn it's back on Israel and sevour the ties ....God Help us.

Jews live in many other Arab countries w/o problems...ever wonder why there are so many problems w/ Israel, hmmm....?

    • Posted By: amethyst9 @ 01/08/2009 9:55:29 AM

bubnug - look up some history. Almost 1 million Jews were forced out of all of the Arab and Muslim countries in 1948 and afterwards because the Arabs said that they were going to eradicate the new country of Israel. They left with nothing in their hands, and created new lives in many different countries - particularly in Israel and the US. For all of this, they have not received one ounce of payment, nor were they allowed to return to their homes or businesses.

      • Posted By: unanymous1 @ 01/08/2009 10:21:00 AM

And Israel never forced anyone out, there are Arabs who are citizens of Israel. The Arab countries had many markets and homes left in their land for the so-called "Palestinians" to move into when they forced the Jews out of their lands, but to this day they refuse citizenship to any of them. This is the stated policy of the Arab League. To accept them into their society would mean that they couln't continue to use them as pawns against Israel. To them, the only thing better than a dead Jew is a dead Palestinian.

Because many in the Arab world are psychotic? Was this a trick question?

  • Posted By: q0299005 @ 01/08/2009 10:20:25 AM

Mr. Miller. You have written an excellent article. I hope Barak Obama and his administration can take a clue from you. It is neither wise nor acceptable by any civilized nation to attach on a school that is run by United Nations and then give some lame execuse. If we want to have an image make over, we must make sure not to take side and act as immediator with dignity. There are few foolish people who ask you to live at border and then write, In my opinion, they should be termed as state terrorist. After killing so many innocent people in Ghaza, Israel should be called a state that support military terrorism, in the same way as Palestenians is being called.

  • Posted By: angelboyrc @ 01/08/2009 10:19:44 AM

You guys so out of touch with reality, like many have already posted, it's easy to say to get tough on Israel when the rockets are not landing on our homes here in the US, but when a terrorist attack hit's home; (here in the US), we invade Afghanistan in order to protect our people from any more possible threats, yet Israel can't? History has proven that you can't negotiate with terrorist, they are not rational minded people; they do not have the same values nor moral compass.

Also, to forsake support of Israel, our only TRUE ally in the region (because if we weren't buying oil from the others, they wouldn't give a rip about us) is not only stupid but irresponsible and a security threat to the US. That would be like a bank removing it's alarm systems and security cameras.

All I have left to say is you know nothing about Mideast foreign policies, and shouldn't be writing about it.

I don't understand why everyone says Israel is denying food, water and medical necessities to the Palestinians. They don't seem to have a problem bringing in weapons. Maybe they should substitute their weapons for food. If they would concentrate on enriching their lives and that of their children instead of how can we kill jews they wouldn't be in this situation. You can't have pitty or help those that won't help themselves. The problem is the ignorance in the arab world. What do they teach their kids in school how to become mortars. Maybe they need to teach their kids on how to be architects, doctors, engineers and learn to build their cities, and hospitals create jobs and not depend on others. If they would concentrate on making their own lives better, richer instead of how to nurture hate then the Middle East would have peace.

    Straight Talker 09 Message #2 01/05/09 08:36 AM
Why waste energy over something that never ends? The Israelis even admitted that they may not be able to root out all the terrorists. So, business as usual. Move on. Don't obsess.

  • Posted By: SNURDLY @ 01/08/2009 10:15:56 AM

Hamas said Israel's withdrawal from Gaza was a victory for them. Even if only one Hamas member or rocket is left they'll still declare victory. So how can anyone negotiate with a party who can not accept any gesture at all?

Here's a video of Hamas using a UN AMBULANCE AS A TROOP CARRIER.

There was a philosophical shift in Britain and the US from the late 1910???s into the 1930???s toward the belief that all nations, whether democratic, authoritarian, or theocratic, are to be regarded as equal in moral status. Each nation was to have a right to define its own ???National Self-Determination???. This view led to a great appeasement in regards to Germany, which thought its self-determination was to regain its seat of military power at the time. This article, regarding the Muslims, is written in the exact tone I would expect to see articles written during that time period about the Germans. The British falsely accepted guilt for WWI, which led to increased casualties in WWII. Is this happening again? Are you insinuating that the Israelis should accept guilt for the irrational Hamas/Palestinean attacks?

  • Posted By: bubnug @ 01/08/2009 10:14:51 AM

There was a mandate to establish a Jewish state in the 1920s because the British were promised Jewish financial support in fighting the Ottomans. Thank you again US and Britain for getting involved where you shouldn't and screwing things up again.

Sorry guys but you only get the wrong publicity... If your people is starving and you have no right to live in YOUR OWN HOME LAND, i dont think you'll behave better than the palestinians... Before any judgement and any comment, dont forget that their land is occupied... I think that is giving them the RIGHT to do what they're doing, defending their territory and their HOME!!!!

  • Posted By: Blondie87 @ 01/08/2009 10:13:34 AM

I wanted to add something else. I saw people posting about why all arab countries are anti- Israel. It's not because Israel is doing anything wrong. The only thing Israel has done "wrong" is to merely exist. The fighting won't stop until Israel ceases to exist. Maybe Mr Miller should try talking to Hamas himself and see how nice and willing they are to make peace! HA!! What stupidity! They'd kill you too! Clearly, the Palestinians agree with their terrorism, or they wouldn't have voted them into power. Strange how karma comes back to bite us! Now the group they voted into power is holding them in from of guns. When an IDF soldier tries to attack them, they lift a Palestinian child by the ear in front of them. That's how sick these people are!! They have a mickey mouse and sesame street show that teaches about killing people!! WTF??!! You can't make peace with people like that!!

  • Posted By: hadassah1977 @ 01/08/2009 10:13:20 AM

You obviously lack undestanding of what is actually happening in Israel. You blame Israel for what's happening in Gaza but fail to realize that Hamas is the one denying aid to Palestinian civilians. Hamas uses civilians as human shields and you blame Israel for what happens to them. Hamas steals relief supplies, and you accuse Israel of denying civilians aid. Iran, Hamas, Hezbollah, and Syria have openly stated that their goal is the total annihilation of the nation of Israel and every Jewish soul, and you decry that America should be tougher on a nation that is simply trying preserve its people from slaughter. Perhaps before you determine what you think is the best course of action for Israel or America, you should try spending actual time in Israel. I recommend S'derot, Ashkelon, or Be'er Sheba. Just remember when the siren goes off, you only have 15 seconds to get to shelter before the Hamas missile hits you.

No surprises here. The rare article that does get into a mainstream magazine, proposing even a marginally tougher stance with Israel, is furiously attacked. The ignorance of people of the facts on the ground and the even lesser level of morality among those who pretend to be civilized is appalling. Here are 1.2 million people, more than 70% of whom do not belong to Gaza in the first place and were pushed out from their homes in what is now known as Israel, who are not being let to even live as refugees. Now, the commentators here seem to say that the deaths of Palestinian children are a fulfillment of a biblical prophecy. Let these bigoted people not claim to be human.

I hope that we do not become anti Israel as it seems to me those at newsweek are, for this would be the tragic path that others have gone down-ie---germany, france and many others all to thier doom. I pray that Mr. Obama has more brains than that . Danny Ford
