Majorie Cohn: Of the Huffington Post Today Writes...

The targeting of civilians violates the Fourth Geneva Convention. Since the rockets fired from Gaza into Israel cannot distinguish between civilians and military targets, they are illegal. But Israel's air and ground attack in Gaza violates Geneva in four ways. First, it constitutes collective punishment of the entire population in Gaza for the acts of a few militants. Second, it targets civilians, as evidenced by the large numbers of civilian casualties. Third, it is a disproportionate response to the rockets fired into Israel. Fourth, an occupying power has an obligation to ensure food and medical supplies to the occupied population; Israel's blockade has created a humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Israel's airstrikes and ground assault on the people of Gaza have little to do with the Gazan rockets, which hadn't killed any Israelis for a year before Israel's current military operation. Israel's leaders are bombing and attacking Gaza in order to gain an advantage in the upcoming Israeli elections in February.

Foreign Minister Tsipi Livni is locked in a tight race with Benyamin Netanyahu, who has criticized Livni for her "soft" treatment of the Palestinians. The Israeli government seeks to do as much damage as possible to Gaza while Bush is still in office. The New York Times cited several Middle East experts who "believe that Israel timed its move against Hamas, which began on Dec. 26, 25 days before Mr. Bush leaves office, with the expectation of such backing in Washington." Obama, in spite of his unequivocal support for the policies of Israel during the campaign and his deafening silence about the recent casualties, is an unknown quantity.

Israel would be unable to carry out its aggressive policies in Gaza without the support of the United States, which gives Israel $3 billion in U.S. taxpayer money each year. The F-16 bombers and Apache attack helicopters Israel is using on Gaza were bought with U.S. money.

The war on Gaza also violates U.S. law. The Human Rights and Security Assistance Act mandates that the United States cease all military aid to Israel, which has engaged in a consistent pattern of gross violations of internationally recognized human rights. The Arms Export Control Act prohibits U.S. weapons from being used for any purpose other than inside the borders of a country for self-defense. Targeting schools, police stations and television broadcast centers is not self-defense.

I think that Obama's silence on the issue means that he is not in agreement with the President. How would it look for him to take any stance on this issue that is opposite of the current administration's view? It is probably best for him to wait until AFTER the inauguration to get tough on Israel (if you know what I mean).

        Correct...

Its about time a President stood up to this Nation and say, you cannot just do as you please...

We support Israel's Right to Exist and we Support the Palestinians Right to Exist, but we have helped You for 60 Years...

3 Billion in Tax Payers Money, its time to Stop this flow of Billions and Military Might, especially in these Tough Economic Times, here in America.

My Opinion, The 3 Billion per year sent to Israel should go to the Poor here in America.

Can you imagine the impact of 3 Billion Directed to the Poor Classes here in America...

If the Government Streamlined the funds correctly, to ensure an End to Generational Poverty here in America..

Within 20 years we'd have a Major Decrease in Poverty and a Major Increase in Middle Class America !!

The 3 Billion Dollars of Tax Payers money, should be spent on the Poor Classes in America.

Israel is a Virtually a [Welfare State, a Welfare Country], by receiving 3 Billion Dollars per year, from U.S. Taxpayers when they are supposedly Self Sufficient, Independent and Prosperous and standing supposedly on their own to feet !!

How about giving some of those Billions back to the Poor U.S. Tax Payers..Hmmm

Just think 60 Years of Dolling out Billions to Israel.....

Just Imagine a Small Population Receiving 3 Billion Dollars Per YEAR Times 60 YEARS !!!

Not to mention the Billions received by Countries around the World and Jewish Americans and around the World.

        Enough is Enough

It has to STOP and other countries as well, America should streamline or cut off sending Millions to Billions of Dollars to those countries as well.

        Take care of Home...

Or we will soon be an Impoverished Nation, with the Poor Class becoming a Much Larger Class and that will not be Good for the Society at all !!

Just returned from blogging on the Fox website. The Democrats outnumber the GOP at least 3 to 1 there too. As predicted the GOP party of hate is evaporating at a rapid pace. It turns out, much to my suprise and appreciation, that there are so many whot have recognized that the party is led by hate. They just are sick and tire of it. The Democrat registration continues to grow and the no-party affiliation registration is soaring. By 2020, the GOP party of hate will be third in line and relegated to minor party status. A bit smaller than the Green party, but not by much in 2028.

Thank you for this remarkably sane article. Obama MUST lean on Israel by threatening to withhold financial aid unless it stops its inhumane oppression of the Palestinians. What people would not try to retaliate against a bully that has systematically tried to annihaiate them by starvation, intervention in power and water supply, and willfull destruction of homes and medical facilities? I would personally lob anything across the border that I could get my hands on if subjected to such merciless treatment. The US must not be influenced by either the Jewish lobby or the Christian Right, whose fanatical support of settlements on the West Bank corresponds to that of relgious Israelis whose policies are based on biblical prophecies. It is time to deal strictly with reality and true justice and set religion completely aside.

Set religion aside? That's the whole premise behind their battles and has been for the past 4000 years!! It must be nice that the newly, liberal, free thinking Americans can just brush religion aside like some dandruff. Israelis/Jews are God's chosen people. That's why thy fight off the other non-chosen Arab nations.

Set religion aside, that's a good one.

I am so tired of the media and politicians not giving the public some background on this vital situation. This started a long time agowith the Sykes/Picot mandate and continued with the Balfour declarations. All aimed at carving a Israeli state in Palestine. Israel also used terrorist tactics to rid themselves of the British occupation (King David Hotel). People that had barely extracted themselves from tirbal living were expected to make a viable state. It's all onesided.

  • Posted By: mhadichi @ 01/07/2009 7:11:06 AM

I feel that the USA always has to make Israel secure, which is mission impossible for a country that robed it's original people the right to exists.
The USA and the world is just waisting their time and money in protecting Israel, which everyone who is educated, will tell you is just a waste.

having read much of the comments that have emanated from those same tired voices who claim that anyone and everyone is an anti-semite, I have to say that I continue to be appaled by the level of ignorance in the west on this issue. the media treats the Palestinians as Israel's neighbors. those of you who want to talk semantics, israelis exiled muslims and christians from Palestine in equal proportion when the land was occupied. those who keep turning this into a religous war need to try and understand the root causes of why both sides despise each other.

to anyone who says that Hamas has fired 10,000 rockets into Israel over the last ten years, I say that in the starting 24 hours of the second intifada, Israeli soldiers unleashed 1,000,000+ bullets on Palestinian children who were fed up with the occupation, armed with nothing more than stones. terrorism is state sponsored by BOTH parties in this struggle. only those who have read from unbiased sources on this issue can tell you that Israeli "self defense" or terrorism has been profoundly worse over 60 years of occupation.

  • Posted By: Fantahun Beerarra @ 01/07/2009 1:46:31 AM

I disagree with Miller because he is one sided. It is the Palestinians who put Hamas on power and it is Hamas who has fired 10,000 rockets over ten years and killed and terrorized innocent civilians in Israel. And it is Hamas who hides cowardly in the midst of civilians and fights the Israelis. It would be okay if he said both are wrong (though not quite) but to blame it on Israel alone shows that his comments are lopsided.

  • Posted By: Fantahun Beerarra @ 01/07/2009 1:42:49 AM

Is it it true that the Palistinians voted Hamas to power? Then, life did not become unbearable to 1.5 millon Palestinians by Israel but by the choice they made and by the aggressive acts of Hamas.

i really very supportive to this article, it hits the point, Israel is making wrong things and USA is supportive what do you thing the image of America would be. this lead to more violance in the area, more hate for america and israel. increase the fundamentalism.

Tuesday saw new Israeli air attacks on Gaza

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has called for an immediate end to fighting in the Gaza Strip during a meeting of the UN Security Council in New York.

Mr Ban criticised both Israel for its bombardment of Gaza and Hamas for firing rockets into Israel.

The UN also heard a French-Egyptian ceasefire proposal, backed by the US and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas.

Israel says it has agreed to set up a humanitarian corridor to allow aid into the Gaza Strip.

Mr Ban said the Council had "primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security" and urged its members to act "swiftly and decisively to put this crisis to an end".

He said the longer-term issues of Palestinian divisions must also be seriously addressed and called for the "urgent continuation of negotiations for a political solution".

"We need urgently to achieve Palestinian unity and the reunification of Gaza with the West Bank within the framework of the legitimate Palestinian Authority," he said.

Palestinian health ministry officials say 595 people, including 195 children, have been killed since Israel began its offensive 11 days ago.

An Israeli attack on Tuesday on a school building, which Israel says was sheltering militants, left at least 30 people dead and 55 injured, UN officials say.

Mr Ban said he was "deeply dismayed" by the school attacks, branding them "totally unacceptable".

Israel, which has vowed to reduce rocket attacks from Gaza on its territory, has lost five soldiers and four civilians.

In another development, Venezuela ordered the expulsion of Israel's ambassador in protest at the Gaza offensive and its "flagrant violations of international law".

I have no problem with Obama getting tougher with Israel. But the middle of a war is not the right time to do it. And chances are, Hamas and Hezbollah will keep this one going for some time. It could be awhile before Obama gets his chance.

Tough on Israel and the Arabs? What kind of wimpy diplomacy is that? Hello, it's like punishing your naughty child and good child alike for soomething the naughty child instigated. I had teachers like that in school and it gave bullies incentive to continue their mischief-it was worth it to them to see the good kid get in trouble along with getting picked on by the bully. And yes, israel is overall the good kid who just happens to be smarter ,stronger ,and more democratic which translates into MATURE. When the palestinians can grow up, accept their own nation of Palestine as a viable option instead of living and dying just to see Israel destroyed, then there may be hope. But as long as they continue to voluntarily be the at the end of the Islamic spear, as long as they continue to live like dogs who return to their vomit, there will be no peace and only constant death and violence. It's ALL up to the PALESTINIANS, Israel is just waiting.

    To Mommyof 3...
Why don't we just bomb every arab country in the middle east so israel can be at peace? Does that make you happy? Kill them all! If you were a Palestinian woman I know that you would be in the street doing the same thing. You are hypocrite that confuses right and wrong.
Answer this, have you read anything about the Palestinians? Do you really know or want to know who the oppressor is?
Don't confuse some version of Islam with the protection of human rights. Can you tell me, are you a Christian or a Jew? If you are a Jew I totally understand your position, if you are a Christian go and sit down again and read the bible.

It is evident that Hamas is a terrorist group and Israel is just trying to defend itself. They are clearly using civilians as shields. They are hiding out in areas where they know they can use defenseless people as shields. This happens in every war where you have rebells and guerillas using civilian people as shields by force. As far as I know, Israel has even taken steps to warn the Gazan people of their airstrikes before they even strike. I've never heard of a country giving out warnings to flee their homes with concern for civilians and minimizing casualties. Unfortunately, Israel is fighting against an extremist group that apparently knows no bounds even to the point of wiping out their own people for their cause. Besides, they believe it's well worth it since they gain points with their god. Quite disturbing!

Folks, This is off topic, but with all the fears about things in general, about American politics, the Middle East, energy and others expressed at these sites, many of which I share, I thought I would share this presentation by Paul Stamets:

    http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/paul_stamets_on_6_ways_mushrooms_can_save_the_world.html

It was sent to me. I almost did not listen to it because it is 17 minutes long. It is not silly or kooky. It is an interesting and uplifting presentation about one aspect of the web of life I knew nothing about. Surely there is more for us to learn about many things.

I believe most who invest the time, will be glad they did. To the rest of you.... :-)

I don't think Mr. Obama will have that much saying over the Gaza conflict. Didn't he heard about the jewish lobby in Washington DC. If his race wont get him, his unexperience in world affair will. I don't think he is going to be as powerful as people expect him to be.
