DrewCaeng, yes you're right Jews have historically lived in the land but were, tragically, persecuted out. The land has since 630 ish been ocuppied by Muslim Arabs. You can't then erase a history of well over 1000 years and expect the people who have lived in the land for 1400 years to suddenly move out. The timing of the birth of Islam has nothing to do with it. The people who live in that region have done so for thousands of years and may have converted to Islam but that doesn't change their ethnicity and their place of origin. And again true a state of Palestine didn't exist as it has always been part of some sort of empire. But that said Ireland was not a political state before the British withdrew, does that mean that because Ireland was never a state it therefore didn't have a right to exist? Of course it did, it may not have been a political state until 1922 but it was a state in terms of the common identity of the people living there. As for the land being British??? Yes it was part of the British Empire but come on this is a country which colonised and quite frankly caused misery in much of the world, creating ridiculous states such as Rhodesia. Any way this was in the 20th century, what about the hundreds of years before then. I'm merely giving a history, I'm not questioning the right of Israel to exist, I believe it is imperitive that the state of Israel exists, but for peace to come people must understand the bloody history that lies behind it. Finally just a point, possibly the most similar situation in recent times has been the Northern Ireland situation. A relative peace amongst people who are poles apart has now been reached. It is important to note that tempting as it was to not include Sinn Fein / IRA in the negotiations, the British government realised that it was imperitive to do so. The point is that military action will only be effective if the entire Palestinian people are eradicated! I'm afraid unpleasant as it may be for many to palate negotiation is the only way forward.

It really does get old listening to the media talk about "Poor Hamas" or "Poor Iraq" etc. I have a few views that I think are far more national than the left wing media wish us to think:
1/ Every contry and nation has a right to defend itself and that includes the US.
2/ Instead of slanting to bashing contries like Israel and the US when they defend themself, try "reporting" on how the confilt came to be and who started it. If someone tried to attack me in my home, I would hope that I would be allowed the right to fight back and defend myself.
3/ Instead of reporting on their own liberal veiws, report on the story in an unbias manner. I for one do not give a damb about what any one reporters "thoughts and feelings" are. Just give me the facts, all the facts and nothing but the facts and keep your opinions to yourself.
4/ For crying out loud, lets get behind our country and our values. Lead by the media, we spend way too much time bashing our citizens, our goverment and our policies because we are forced into wars or decisions that are sparked by outside parties (does 9/11 ring any bells).
5/ We all should have the same first goal: Protect the USA. So much of what we hear and see in the media and by protesters makes me question the intelect of some of our citizens. It seems that they want to rant about how we are treating the "poor" detainies until they are a victom of a terrorist or criminal act then it is "poor me".
6/ Quit blamiing President Bush for everything. He has made mistakes but give me one person besides Jesus who has not. He has done exacly what he said he was going to do and what the World (yes the world) rallied around him to do "go after terrorist no matter where in the world you are hidding". Remember, like Hamas, they started it and we responded. I am proud to say to the world "I am American" and I feel, if you dont like it here, the borders are always open on the way out too! Funny you dont see people dying to leave but you sure see alot dying to come in. Wow, we must be a bad country! NOT.
I did not vote for Obama and never would but he is going to be our new comander and cheif so that being the case, I will support him. As with any leader, he will also be held accountable for his decisions and will be judged on how he leads and listens to the wish's of the people and what is best for the contry, not just himself and the Deomocratic party. If we dont like what he does, we can vote him out. Man, America is great! Sure is good we fought for it!

I am an American and proud to say that I have also served in the military. This article is not honest, it is very biased against Israel as usual. The Jews are Jehovah God's chosen people, and Israel is the land that God gave Abraham thousands of years ago, including the Gaza Strip which the Palestinians think is theirs. Te Arabs, Iranians and other sourrounding countries are hell-bent on destroying Israel but if she dares to defend herself in any way then she is portrayed as evil. That is absolutely ridiculous, disgusting, perverted and outrageous!!! Israel is here to stay. Jehosvah God put her there, He will protect her to the very end and the rest of the world better just get used to it and stop thier hatred, war-mongering and aggression.

I am not a Jew, I am a Christian but I love the Jewish people and I love Jehovah God (not the same as allah). I say to all those who hate Israel, GET OVER YOURSELVES!! LEAVE ISRAEL ALONE AND YOU WILL BE LEFT ALONE!!!

Personally, I don't think you can negotiate a peace until you have eliminated all terrorists. It is the relativity of good and evil.

and yes, since you posed the question. Israel's actions are aimed at bringing long term peace in the region, which will happen if hamas actions are monitored as a result. And stop the incessant whining about settlements, since the settlements were dismantled 3 years ago. You belie your own heritage Aaron David Miller when you do not espouse a course of action that builds up instead of destroys. The Jews have always built up from nothing, instead of destroying what is given them which is what hamas did. Learn your own history Aaron David Miller. Moron or malicious? I'd bet the latter .

I guess I know now what they mean when they say you can use the bible to justify just about anything. Want to steal some land? Want to kill a bunch of defenseless, starving children? The Bible says it's Okay, because these are the chosen people. Destroying the rocket launchers will DO NOTHING. Iran will restock them for free within a few months. Treat the disease (inequality, disease, hunger, joblessness, discrimination, murder....) and the symptom(Hamas) will go away.
