NEW YORK: US said that India has turned into a hub for supply of funds to terrorists due to its network of ???Hundi??? and ???Hawala??? system of funds remittances.

US State Office report available here said this. US report quoting Reserve Bank of India said that an amount of $42.60 billion was remitted to India during 2007-2008. Analysts said that during the same period an amount in the range of $13-17 billion were remitted through Hawala Market, a parallel system of the legal one.

Report said that India on priority should cooperate in those international efforts aiming at making the parallel systems of remittances transparent in view of the Hawala Market directly linked to the supply of funds to the terrorists.

US State Office report said that India should take up effective law making for combating money laundering and halting the supply of funds to terrorists. India has been asked in the report to work for becoming a full member of inter-governmental organization, Financial Action Task Force, which formulates policies for this purpose.

In India, Brahmins, who are 3.5 per cent of the population, hold 78 per cent of the judicial positions and approximately 50 per cent of parliamentary seats.

Mass rapes often form part of the tactics of intimidation used by upper-caste gangs against lower castes. The Home Ministry reported that, between 2000 and 2001, there was a 16.5 per cent increase in reported rape cases.

Each year, inter-caste violence claims hundreds of lives; in 2001 it was especially pronounced in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh.

In India, among the millions of bonded labourers (estimates range widely between 20 to 65 million for 2001), the Government found 85 per cent to be Dalits or from lower castes. These included a large number of children.

Dalits and adivasis (indigenous peoples) form the largest proportion of those who drop out of school. In rural areas, between the ages of five and nine, 36.1 per cent of Dalit boys and 48.4 per cent of Dalit girls dropped out.

About 75 per cent of Dalit communities live below the poverty line.

Two-thirds of the Dalit population is illiterate.

Half are landless agricultural labourers.

Only seven per cent have access to safe drinking water, electricity and toilets.

On most counts, we'd like to believe that we are well ahead of the Pakistanis: films, music, art, theatre, there is a rich diversity and tradition to Indian culture that our friends across the border find tough to match. Let me though now suggest one area, perhaps controversially, where the Pakistanis are scoring over us: mainstream news television. Our production values may still be superior, but take away the glitzy packaging and the reality is a little more disconcerting. If the aftermath of 26/11 has revealed something to the seemingly mighty Indian electronic media, it is that a powerful section of the Pakistani news television has shown itself to be less trivia driven, less jingoistic, and, at times, even more enterprising than us.


Had it not been for Geo and Dawn News, there is a fair chance that the Pakistani establishment would still be in denial over the country's involvement in 26/11. "When Arundhati Roy came to our campus, a member named Asif Kumar threw his slipper at her to protest her statement that Kashmir should be given to Pakistan. Her statement is against our national interest," said Jairam Pandey, national convenor, YUVA.
The slipper was bought by businessman Amitabh Kumar. "I was in Connaught Place for a meeting, when I went for a walk to Jantar Mantar after lunch. There I saw a demonstration by YUVA activists, who were auctioning the slipper," he said.
"I feel she is a traitor to our nation, so despite the steep price, I bought the slipper thrown at her. I am now going to go on eBay and auction it off. Even if I do not recover the money, I do not care, as it was done for the pride of my nation," he added.
