As our military allows persons of any religious persuasion to serve as openly as heterosexuals and does not allow discrimination on the basis of religious affiliation or lack of religious affiliation for that matter, then any of these arguements here that reference "The Bible" or what "God says" are irrelevant. I'm offended by all of these Christians trying to espouse their religious agenda on everyone. Muslims, Buddhists, Jews, Mormons, Scientologists etc. all are allowed to serve openly in the military as are Atheists, Agnostics, Witches, and Satanists. When you say "the bible says" or "God says", to a number of these people in these categories - that arguement means nothing since it holds no bearing where military policy decisions are made. Sorry - as much as you'd like to believe we have a Christian Army, it's an Army free to practice any religion it likes or not to practice religion at all.

#1 - in the original Greek, the word that King James started to translate at "homosexual" was actually a word for "male prostitute". Since the English language didn't have a separate word for male prostitude, King James substitued "homosexual" which are two very different things! I would be highly offended if the word "prostitute" was tranlated as "woman," or "heterosexual" and this persistant translation error is no different.
#2 - we are not talking about people who are joining a monastery or convent; soldiers do not sign up for service to display their religious piety and people don't seem terribly concerned about them fornicating. We even have service men and women of other religions or no religion at all, so "Christian ethics" is not a prerequisite to military service.
#3 - My Bible says "For God so loved the WORLD - not Christians only, not heterosexuals only - but the WORLD - everybody. I believe that if we Christians would put asside our out hate and predjudice and actually be "Christ-like" then these issues that we obsess over might actually be put back into perspective instead of being the blown out of proportion monsters that they are. "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength, and love your neighber - whether he be black, white, Muslim, gay, straight, or whatever - as yourself" were declared by Jesus to be the 2 greatest commandments on which all of the law and the prophets are based. Do that, and you have done well.

Boy did you open up a can of worms. We can all dream of a perfect would that fits our lifestyle to a tee. The fact is that there have been and are now members of all lifestyles in service of the worlds organizations since the beginning of time. We really do not need this distraction at all. Do you think that if someone checks the box on any form that declares that they are gay that there uniform will have a G on it, so the S's can stay away. Our military has been evolving for all of the time it has existed, during the Civil war we had units made up of Blacks who served with valor, during the 2sd world war we had units made up of Japanese who also served with valor and so on, all of these unites also had gays in them and they also served with valor. Let it go , let them be who they are, let them serve there country and let receive what is do them as VETERANS.

I am to judge with richious judgment and because i have obeyed the gospel of Jesus i have no sin in Gods eyes i have repented of my sin and i live godly today Gays that are in sin living togther whatever can get out of that sin and repent you will die in your sins and so will anyone else who is living in sin. Gods grace only covers those who are repentant. That means you don't do that anymore. Now if you slip up and Honesty repent Gods grace covers that But don't think you can do whatever you want and God's gona just say oh well he's trying or she you must stop your sin and repent .

As an active military member of over 24 years, I'm not sure how I feel about the new policy change yet. I will accept (not necessarily like) and enforce policy as set by my CNO, Joint Chiefs and the Commander in Chief- that is my job. The days a majority of our politicians having served our country, are few and far between. It would be nice if they did, having shared some of our experiences to make judgements and policy. The time to adjust for this change will be painful regardless of what civilian 'norms' and thoughts are. Don't pass judgement on Military though processes unless you have walked in our 'boots'.

I am straight non homophobic. I am retired from the military after 30 years. I as well as all other service members have most likely served with, supervised, been supervised and probably even roomed with a gay person. There have been some highly decorated gay vets. I would have a problem rendering first aide to a known gay person because of a higher probability of contracting HIV or even AIDS. I would have a problem sharing sleeping quarters and shower facilities with a person that is openly gay. I think the first time I would be showering and something happened would end my career. Gay people are most likely hard working honest people. Other than the above mentioned I have no problems with gays. They are human beings. I am of the belief that what I don???t know won???t hurt me. Lets keep a persons sexuality a secrete. MY GOD BLESS ALL OF OUR SERVICE MEMBERS.

  • Posted By: ta2t2o @ 01/08/2009 1:12:44 PM

Another interesting observation on the commentary here is that many of the people here who state that they have a fear or sleeping or showering in the same space as a gay person are often the same people who feel that being Gay is a choice.

That being the case, we may need to have regular check-ups (monthly perhaps) to assure that someone didn't "choose to be gay" AFTER they were already in the military. Imagine the sense of panic that would occur were we to find that the most common cause of otherwise heterosexual people "choosing to be gay" was being forced to shower with someone of the same sex.

A ordinarily heterosexual male who never had a gay thought in his head joins the military. Gets stationed in some 3rd world country and shares a shower with another ordinarily heterosexual male. All of a sudden while he's lathering up he thinks "since it's unlikely I'm going to get any action other wise, I think I'll chose to be gay today.". Should we kick him out? If so, should we let him back in when later he "choses to be straight"? What about all the Ex-Gay Ministries to claim to be able to cure gay people. If a "previously gay person" gets a graduation certificate from one of these "Straight Boot Camps", can we now let him in the military? If not, why? It's either a choice or it isn't. If it's a choice, then you need to consider all of the above. If it isn't a choice, then you really shouldn't be able to discriminate - since a person can't help the way they were born.

this is to GODfollower... The issue of Gays will never be closed because of people like you... you quote the Bible yet you "disobey" when you start casting stones... I understand that the Bible is taken with alot of faith but the one thing you need to realize is that it was written by MAN... Men that Probably squeezed in thier own closed minded opinions about things that they were uncomfortable with or didnt like seeing... all I have to say is the if you dont want a gay person to be in the military then you take thier place on the front line! they are at least willing to die for this country are you????????

No! The bible was written by God and he annointed men to write and spread the gospel.

IS WHAT GOD/JESUS HAS TO SAY...

I DONT LIKE WHEN PEOPLE ARE NOT STANDING FOR GOD OR THEY SAY GOD BUT YET NOT LIVE IT.....

IF GOD SAYS THIS AND THAT ...STAND FOR IT......DONT PUT GOD'S NAME IN VAIN....FOR SOMETHING HE HATES.....

GOD/JESUS TALKED ABOUT IT ALL OVER.....AND THOSE WHO SAY THEY BELIEVE IN GOD.........ARE NOT LIVING FOR HIM......SO YOU GUYS NEED TO CHECK YOURSELVES I NTHE MIRROR AND SEE IF YOU STAND FOR HIM....CAUSE ALL I KNOW AND BELIEVE IS THAT HE HATES IT.....AND SENDS THEM TO SOMEWHERE YOU DONT WANT TO BE.......

I served in the NAVY for 3 years and was discharged honorably. The only thing that protected me as a thin blonde female from other gay women, was the don't ask don't tell policy. As it was I was approached ten or more times by different gay women, telling me they were in love with me and a few even had favorite underwear that I wore. I have no doubt in my mind, if gays were allowed to serve openly while I was serving, that a few of those gay women that approached me would have just taken what they wanted from me, feeling they were justified. As it was, because I was attractive, I barely held these womens advances at bay. I cannot imagine how aggressive some gay men would be either. I have no problem with what anyones personal choice for sex is as long as it isn't taking my freedom away as a heterosexual. Giving the gays more rights in the military will hurt many innocent people just trying to serve their country. If Obama passes this, then he may as well make everything co-ed. Mix the female berthings with the males. There is no difference and no need for segregation then. And you will see more rape and unlawfulness that the public can even imagine.

I have a hard time even believing this. It seems wholly fabricated. Oh, you poor thing, you were young, blonde and attrative and surrounded by lustful lesbians who failed to rape you because of DADT!!?? Give me a break! People get raped by one another (regardless of sexual orientation) and it is never prevented because of some rule- in case you haven't noticed, there are laws against it!! People rape/harrass because they have other problems and need remediation- NOT because of their sexual orientation or even how attrattive someone is. And another thing: you had/have every right to say NO and to file a complaint, and to fend off an attacker. I don't think your Cinderella story has anything to do with what we are discussing here.

if these brave men and women are willing to put thier life on the line for a country that will not give them equal rights
when it come to marraige, adoption, plus many other things. they not only deserve the right they should be given
an extra medal. knowing they are going to war to protect their country along side others who are just as likely to
beat them to a pulp or even kill them. not knowing who they can trust. god bless them for wanting to protect
    me and my family.

This is a topic that needs no discussion. Although we live in a free country with freedoms to express ourselves the way we choose that doesn't make it right. I am a christain and believe in chioce to live the way you choose, but there is a day we will all answer. Our actions wether good or bad will be judged. Life has to be lived by principles the history of our own government tells us that. We have betryed what our founding fathers set up for us. Young people going to college will graduate and not have a understanding of the Consitution. Our country is not governed by what was set up by our forfathers is govened by won or lost court cases and laws made outside of the foundation of the very governing tool of our country. Example gay marriage should not be up for debate whether we should pass a law to allow it or not it was established in the beginning that it was wrong. Why do we spend so much time debating these things. The Bible teaches us that we are wicked at heart we want our own way we want to do our own thing we what to think our own thing, the surprise will be that one day all those that think that way and think the crowd I choose to run with which is govened by the principles of the Bible whose author is Almighty God are a bunch of out of date out of touch dumbies will find themselves viewing things in a different light we can not and most not think that we can get away from Gods principlies and believe that we can survive as a nation. I love America I desire to live no other place but we are falling short of being a great nation. Our government needs to get it togather.

FYI... If you decide to join the military, you lose some freedom. This is somehting that even some people in the military don't understand. It's not a right to be in the military, it's a privilage. If it's time for the military to join the rest of the civilized country, then you take away the standards of the military.

Who I feel bad for are those that think God and Obama (or any new president for that fact) are the "just add water" instant cure-all to the nations problems. We as a nation can't even keep church separated from state or a whorehouse in Nevada in business. I am of the Atheist, anti-ignorance party and don't spend my time worrying if I'm going to get bent over by a "sinner". If you do something worthy, I'll bend over backwards to help you , taking no notice of race, creed, and definitely not sexual preference(s). If "they" are allowed in the military I would only hope that "they" wouldn't prance about in their flamboyance, just as a gang member in prison would necessarily announce that he "gots to git it from somewheres". Truly, no one wants to SEE it - if you do there's porn and fetish parties for that.

Everyone is a hypocrite, everyone is a sinner, and the reason that most people (who aren't like my parents) go to their sanctuary is for relief and forgiveness from their sins...two words - FORCED ATTRITION.

    Semper Fortis - right on!
shutyourface11 - impressive vernacular, for a 13 year old. Go away already.
GodFollower - repetition doesn't make it so. The bible has great stories, that's it. Expand - read out of the box occasionally.

Believe what you want, but if you're going to preach it, be able to back it up with facts. Why do you think no one believes in the Easter Bunny or pixies?

The Navy is a great part of the United States military , I was also in the Army. And I am not taking nothing away from the other branches of the military. I have a great respect for all my VETERANS.

If your going to go in the military just keep being gay in the closet and know this should be concealed all thru the course of duty just as one thats not gay, they have to keep the lil man in the closet to away from all those pretty girls in our military. So just keep it quite under the cover as one would say. I'd like to think I could respect you gay or straight just for being in our military.. Stand tall and have some respect for our Nation! Thats all

If you are free of judgement be the first to cast the stone!!!!

All I read in these comments are thoughts of hate. What happened to the love that is in your religious foundations? I hope that they allow soldiers to openly serve in the military. I understand that some soldiers might not want to enroll, but there is a lot of benefits to a negative.

Gay men and women will serve and feel proud of what they are. Serving and having to live a double life will only cause anxiety within those soldiers. Isnt a war they are fighting for our country enough? They shouldn't have to leave the battlefield to fight another battle on their homeland to receive what they were fighting for in the first place, conservation of freedom. Human rights are something that we are all entitled to. If we want to be singe or married that is the indivual choice. If you want to marry a man or a woman, that is your choice as well.

We are born this way! Who would in their right mind want to be part of a group that is taunted, hated, and rejected? I definitely would want to be. But I was, and I am glad that I am gay. I can say that I see life in a very different way. I accept peoples opinions and beliefs without criticizm. I know people will say that its not a matter of nurture vs nature.

I was brought up to believe that God is all good and he created everything as an image of himself. I believe myself to be a good person. My judement will come. But I will only have to answer to God. I shouldnt have to asnwer to anyone else. If you feel deemed appropriate to judge me and tell me that I am going to hell. Well that is your right. I hope you can justify your actions before God.

Love everyone, hate no one, and this country will continue evolving on what it was originally founded on. Independece, Freedom, and Rights.

I don't think they should be able to join the military. If you want to be gay that's fine but, pushing that into the service is not a good idea. Going to the military is suppose to make a man out of you, not pushing them in you. Its disgusting & immoral! The Queen under me or rather the atheist. If you don't believe in nothing you'll go for anything. Gays are already get married..which is an abomination to God. Believe a lie and be down! Same sex is not normal at all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If that were so none of us would be here. Two men nor can two women reproduce..its not natural nor moral its sick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've read through a lot of the comments, by doing so I noticed some 'usual' facts, most that oppose gays in the military are heterosexual men, the majority of the military, granted. I find this a sad fact that we must "put up with". I served in the USAF proudly 1982-1984. I served with lesbians that never bothered me. I have always thought, "what does a person's sexual orientation have to do with whether or not they can do their duty?" NOTHING. As for homophobs, you have the problem and should learn to deal with it, not the gay/lesibian soldier. My time of service was cut short due in most part to the constant sexual harrasement I put up with from higher ranking NCO's and Officers. One comment mentioned "a guys fear of being raped in the field" rape is not a sexual act, it's an act of rage and violance. While I served there were numerous rapes commited by heterosexual males on females, not gay men on straight men. I think Jay's (marine 1990-1995) comment sums up the "straight" males opinion for most. It's a VERY sad fact, but needs to be turned into fiction, a thing of the past. After years of oppression, discrimination and hatred, one would hope that change could be welcomed and accepted. LET FREEDOM RING FOR ALL
