I wonder what the Gov. would do if every gay person in the service of this great country stood up and said" I am gay and will not hide any longer". If the gays said that and offered to just leave with an honorable discharge I think things would change fast. The gays are not going to go away and against great odds they choose to fight for a country that denies them their rights. I think that shows a kind of strength and pride , can you not see that? I can not begin to understand being gay but don't have to understand to know they deserve the same rights and freedoms we all should share in the USA.

Our nation is sustaining at least two wars right now and you folks are worried about the shower situation? Really? I had to ask for shower time in the field because I was often the only female in an all male outift. Was I looked at? - oh yeah - did I care? Not much - I wanted to wash my field-dirty butt and get some rest.
When I was harassed it usually was by the straight, married, christian men in my unit. Never a chick. Never a muslim. Always the married boyz. Always the Sunday school jesu-lovers.
To those of you about to enlist - take a spelling class. Really. Zidane Thompson - this means you. Your post is barely readable.
And ya'll capital letter - yelling posters - take a little care in how you come across. Netiquette demands that you at least offer some semblance of self-control. No one takes capped rants seriously. Really.
Pretty much if you must yell you are on the way to being abusive. Next stop...? What, a club over the head if we don't listen up? Seems that lifestyle choice is far more harmful than a glance at your boot-tox in the billet.
There is an extremely clear and present line between being a professional solider/airman/marine/sailor and being a violent, out-of-control, narrow-minded jerk. Ask yourself - Which are you?

If a man or woman is willing to volunteer to risk their life in the service of their country, that should be enough. It shouldn't matter if they are gay or straigth, black or white, male or female, Christian or atheist. They are voluteering to make a sacrafice to keep the rest of us safe and most of us never do that. My son is in the army. He has friends who are gay or lesbian in the service and he has to keep it quiet, even cover for them at times to keep them from being kicked out. He said never once has one of his fellow soldier's sexual oreintation interfered with their ability to do their job. However, he did say that a lot of the other inlisted guys who don't really have any friends who are gay, are afraid of the idea and hold predjudist views based on their family backgrounds, misconceived ideas, and even army tradition. But remember a few decades ago how hard it was for a woman to get in the service or into a military academy? Decades before that it was racial minorities that were up against a wall with segregated units and roadblocks to promotions. But our military has evolved - even painfully - in the past to include those whom society at larged deemed should be included. I'm not sure what the right thing to do about "don't ask, don't tell" is, but those who have served with honor, done their job properly, and even been awarded medals, should NOT be kicked out just because someone accused them or discovered that in their private life they are gay. If they are going to do that, then why shouldn't the government refuse to collect taxes from gays? Do you think they'll ever do that? Not on your life!

SHEEP! Please bring it on! The sheep that feel homosexuals serving openly in the military is a good thing are so lost (in more than one way). The more you, the news media and pop culture push homosexuals openly in the military, assault on marriage and family, the more the people will turn against you. We will not let you sheep make us more weak and tear us down like you do our business world, schools, society, culture and nation. Please bring it on; you will loose, just like you loose in life! NOTE: Homos are already in the military SHEEP! They just can???t advertize it SHEEP!

Many that brandish people as sheep are really only sheep themselves. Being led to a decision by another and trying to develop a "social standard" based on what you've been spoonfed. Actually I think that's more the definition of hypocricy. Enjoy your sheepdom in your life of hypocricy.

The biggest argument against homosexuals openly serving is that they will disrupt unit cohesion, and make straight service men/women uncomfortable. In my opinion, those straight people who agree with this argument should look at the fact that homosexuals have been serving in the military for decades. Nothing has come of it. The units are still able to work together and do what they are supposed to do. I don't see any reason why this would change if gays were able to openly serve. Yes, maybe people would be uncomfortable with the fact that they were sleeping in a room with, or showering with a gay person, but they need to remember that they are already doing that. There is no reason why a gay person, who is doing such a great thing for our country, should have to hide, and be someone they're not.

Mac17: You don't get it. At the end of the day, you can say "I'm going to visit my wife/girlfriend this weekend". If a gay says that, he loses his job with a dishonerable discharge. Does that sound like a system you could live with if you were gay? Is that even remotely fair? Just shut up and go away isn't much of a policy, and it certainly doesn't belong in the United States.

This is for hvill90! Yes, people do choose to be gay, your not born gay!!! You absolutely choose this lifestyle, say whatever you like to justify your lifestyle choice, but you as well as I know that no one is born gay! Do I believe that there are men out there who are a little more feminine than some or woman who are a little more masculine than others or maybe even grew up a tomboy like I did? Yes, absolutely but to say your born gay is your way of putting the responsibility for your decision for your lifestyle on something or someone else! And that's not how it work's, we are solely responsible for ourselves and our actions. I believe the word of "God" and the"Bible" is a wonderful book!! And I firmly believe that when each one of us was conceived "God" did not say okay this half is gay and this half is straight! Despite what some people would like to believe if your gay its not because you were born that way or because your born with or without some gene or chromosome!! If you do use this excuse and believe it, it shows me and other christians alike, that you and other homosexual men and woman have found one more thing to blame your lifestyle on! You choose to live this way, just like people who live in nudest colonies, people who are cross dressers, people who want to change their gender or people who choose to live a swinger lifestyle, so take responsibility for your choice.. I will include you in my prayers.. And if you have a Bible somewhere close, you could look up the book of Genesis. (Genesis 1:26 - 2:25) Back to the subject at hand, I agree with mollyannk "don't ask don't tell" keep your business private.

Really? Do we really want to do this? So are we saying that since a man or woman chooses to be openly gay. They are not allowed to serve their country like any straight man or woman? Where is the right in that? I served 3 years in the military and I served as an openly out gay soldier. I was never treated any differently then a straight soldier. Whether someone is gay or straight we are all Human and we all have the same rights. The bill of rights was written for all men and woman. It was not written for only straight men and woman.
Honestly, whoever is worried about Gay's being judged by God then let Us be judged by God, when it is time for our judgement. Move on with your life. Does it say anything in the Bible that God needs anyones help. I grew up catholic. There are certain sins that will not permit you from entering into Heaven and Homosexuality is not one of them. God loves all his children. He does not say. I love all my children except for those who are gay. Its people like you that cause so much hurt in this world and Yes, you too will be judged by God and its not going to be what you expected.

So you believe in the what the Bible says? Then you must also believe that if a rapist rapes a virgin she should marriage her rapist and never divorce (Deuteronomy 22:28-29 ).

If openly gays are allowed to serve in the military, sharing the unique living conditions of no privacy and close living quarters then you must also remove all sex barriers between the male and female enlisted.. How can anyone be in favor of allowing the sharing of those living conditions between straght and gay enlisted and oppose the sharing of the same conditions between the female and males enlisted?

If you want to stop soldiers from having sex with each other it???s not the straights and the gays that need to be separated from each other but rather the gays from the gays.

Most gay men I know may drop hints to find out if the person there talking to is gay, but generally won???t try anything more than that if hint dropping fails. You get your exceptions but every group has there exceptions.

The US military must uphold the Commander In Chief's requests. Upper brass needs to set to tone of tolerance despite any personal beliefs. This in turn will filter down to lower ranks. Discrimination will only cripple the US military in the future. Any violent acts against a person because of sexual orientation, race, religion, or women need to be dealt the harshest discipline.

The military fights to uphold the constitution. The constitution declares that all people are created equal and deserve the same rights and protections. End of story.
These hypocrites then try to change the constitution to exclude gays so they can continue to perpetrate their hate. Shameful.

i am gay and i served in the military for 7 yrs and most of the service men and women new and did not care including most of my base commanders. i was told as long as i did my job and was like everyone else when it came to sex (only on personal time and concenting adults) nothing would happen. this was before don't ask don't tell. it is a fact of life that there are gays most people do not care, as long as they do not intrude on other people lives without concent.

Thanks for sharing your input and your side, I think more gays in the military should come out and discuss their experience to better inform the public and the new administration on what actually goes on. I was in and knew someone who was gay and it didn't bother me because they were good at what they did. Also, I think the "Don't ask Don't tell" was implemented as a way to keep discrimination down a bit. No one can prosecute anyone for what they do in their spare time, that includes going out to gay bars and marching in gay parades. I don't think that getting rid of "Don't ask Don't tell will benefit anyone in the long run...

What does it matter if the gays get to serve openly or not? Can't the system just stay like it is? The entire problem can be avoided if "don't ask, don't tell" is still in effect. that is the whole reason the law was put in place to begin with. Gays can go on being gay, but why do they feal the need to expose themselves to everyone else to see. They can avoid the "prejudice" and just go on being gay.

  • Posted By: Bergcab @ 01/08/2009 12:59:54 PM

WOW! for someone who does not want the Bible thrown in your face, you sure quoted enough of it. I am a former Military Soldier and if I did not know they were gay, I did not care if they were gay. I would have had other feelings had I known who was showering in the same dorm with me, or living in the same room as me. So "Dont ask Dont tell" I feel is a good policy, however it should not be a topic for our administration to be elected.

This issue is kinda similar to how african-americans are treated in the army back in Vietnam.
It could be dangerous for men to admit they are gay in the army, it might invite violence from their own comrads. It's sad. I wonder if we are ready to let them openly admit it.
