    1 Corinthians 6:9 (Whole Chapter)
Or do you not know that the unrighteous [Or wrongdoers] will NOT inherit the kingdom of God? 1 Timothy 1:10 (Whole Chapter)
the sexually immoral, men who practice homosexuality, enslavers, [That is, those who take someone captive in order to sell him into slavery] liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to [2 Tim 4:3; 1 Timothy 6:3; 2 Tim 1:13; Titus 1:13; 2:2] sound [Or healthy] doctrine,

The privacy of individuals is sacred to all sexualities, so as hsitory will prove, being gay has nothing to do with being a good or bad soldier. Throughout history remartkable battles have been fought with homosexuals fighting side by side with heterosexuals. This gay thing is a matter of biology and genes RELIGION has nothing to do with it! The comments in this are revealing the problems reliogion does not fix in we human beings, fear of the unknown. May Giod help us all!

The only reason gays can't be open about who we are (in or out of the military) is the incredibly backward-thinking attitudes of some people. The military is basically a job, just like any other - unless and until sex is part of that job, there's no reason for anyone to care about such things. Honestly, the ONLY part of my life that's different than anyone else's is the person with whom I choose to be intimate. I go to work, I pay taxes, I have a dog, I buy groceries... why should anyone care - much less think - about my sex life?

And "don't ask don't tell" doesn't cover it. Look at corporate America. The have, for decades, realized that if they require (or encourage) their employees to have to hide a significant part of who they are, they also lose a huge portion of that person's productivity, creativity and potential.

Let people be who they are, love whom they choose and contribute as they see fit, whether in the private sector or in the military.

stuolive, you said it perfect. thank you for speaking that. ignorant men who sit there and say, no i dont wanna shower next to a gay guy, well those are the guys who are not secure with thier own sexuality and who are probly the ugly guys in the group. gay or straight, it doesnt affect how you pull a damn trigger. get over yourselves, seperate church and state in this damn country and as far as the borders go, you know what, mexican are very hard working people who the most of them try to make a honest day's pay. they do work you yourself would probly never do. would you get down and clean the toilets or make the beds that you and others sleep in at the hotels. would you janitor the restrooms, no majority would not. they are appreciative and we need to be too. we are not the number one country and if we got that out of our ignorant heads that we should be, maybe we could stand back and see how rediculous we look at what we are doing. the battles we choose to fight in this country, geese we have priorities so mixed up. we are woried about celebs drinking and gay fighting to protect US rather than money into our school system to help raise and educate our future leaders. lets step back and think if this is REALLY something that needs this much attention. this country is in *** and every other country in the worls looks down on us, we need to unite as a nation and join hands to build us back up. and to do that we can select hands that we unite, remember, gays have hands too. UNITED WE STAND , bullshit, prove it.

I love when people say things like "just keep that crap to yourself" or "hey, I'm okay if you are gay, but don't flaunt it. Whatever you want to do behind closed doors is your business." That is the heterosexual equivalent to white people saying "oh, don't worry it's cool if I say something racist, I have a black friend." I am heterosexual and I am always appalled by the level of hypocrisy when it comes to heterosexuals versus homosexuals. When is the last time someone told a heterosexual to "keep that crap to themselves"? How often are we bombarded with heterosexual shows of public affection or some heterosexual going on and on about their love life or loved ones? If you are comfortable with expressing your sexuality in public then so should everyone else. If you are uncomfortable with expressing your sexuality then that is a personal issue you should work out.

Now to the question at hand. Gays and lesbians should be able to join the military openly without fear of retribution. These brave men and women can fight and die for our country as well as any heterosexual. For those that elect to stay home and complain about gays in the military then you should be quite and take their place in the ranks. For those in the military that do not want to stand beside a gay man as he ensures your safety then I ask you why exactly you are so fearful. If you are comfortable with your own sexuality then there should be no concern that he is attracted to you or you to him. If you are under the impression that because he or she is gay that when the fighting begins they will run away I ask you why does sexuality have any impact on bravery? Further, have you thought about what it must be like to be gay in this country? You cannot legally marry, you are shunned by religious leaders, family members, communities and politicians, people protest against you, hate crimes are committed against you, and for the majority of your life you feel it necessary to hide your own sexuality. It appears evident that true bravery lies within the individual that could suffer through all of that and still muster the courage to acknowledge that they are gay.

I think the important facts aboput all this has nothing to do with religion.

There is a pyscological phenonmenon that could be dangerous for soilders if it is allowed to happen. Such as the lost of control of 'hidden relationships' happening in camps. This could be distracting and I hope their stress won't lead them to this.

I suppose the same happens between female and male interactions however the ammont of time men spend time together on their own on very stressful dangerous battles can drive them in to high anxiety for very young men in their 20's and early 30's.

men and women have an instinct of desireing sex or bonding when under huge life threatening situation not due to lust but stressful anxiety. This could be dangerous in particular to male soilders who would be distracted in these kind of things ( such as having sex hiddenly) instead of patroling boarders for signs of danger.

We have a disturbing records of criminal acts of soilders raping arab girls as proof.
Let's not bring more distraction to these soilders, their getting killed out there already as it is. And most seem disiplined enough to do it but in reality it's doing horrors to their emotions.

i think thats kinda stupid, im gay fighting for our country, in iraq right now. im 20 from california, and i enlisted 2 years ago, knowing that im gay. in my unit we have like 3 gay guys openly out. but what about the lesbians? theres tons of them in the army. i mean we are all human. it shouldnt matter what sexuality you are, if you like the same sex then so be it. like in my unit if you cant be in a relationship with another soldier in the unit so there shouldnt be any reason that gays arent allowed in the army. i mean even if they dont let gays in the army, we are still going to join and then come out sooner or later, and you have a signed contract. if you have a problem with it hit me up at ignacio.a.rivera@hotmail.com

Having never served in the military, I am not eminently qualified to comment on 24/7 contact with people in a barracks - however, I work as an EMT and one of the Nurses I work with is openly gay. I have spent many hours in the back of an ambulance and in Emergency Room situations with this man, and have associated with him on a social basis many times. He has never given me one reason to feel uncomfortable.
The problem we are addressining here in this dicussion is not gay/straight; not sexual; not ability to serve - it is bigotry, pure and simple. Whether taught us by our parents or by misguided teachers or clerics, bigotry is the hardest life-lesson we have to un-learn.
I grew up with a bigot-father, who was positive that his own place in life - "white, heterosexual male" placed him above any of God's other creations. I am now in my mid-fifties and am proud to say that I have called many people 'friend' that would have been unacceptable to my father - and that they consider me as a friend also.

Homosexuality is deviant behavior and it is a choice. Gays can CHOOSE to engage in their deviant form of sex or not.
They should definitely not be given special consideration as a minority based on their sexual partners and the US Government should not condone or endorse the behavior of gays any more than they would endorse sex with animals. I've been in situations where gay men have tried to persuade me to engage in sex with them, and it is very uncomfortable. You cannot honestly contend that if a heterosexual man were in combat/military situations with a female, he wouldn't try to convince her to have sex. It happens frequently in the military. Why would it be any different for gays? Don't try to claim that gays are interested in monogamous, committed relationships. Their whole identity is wrapped up in the fact that they engage in homosexual sex.

How about considering what the vast majority of the men an woman who actually serve in the military want. As a 22 year veteran I can tell you that they don't want members to openly serve. A changed policy will result in retention and recruitment problems. There are many members who will not re-enlist and many potential recruits that will not join. You would need to find or assign a seperate wing of any enlisted barracks for the gay servicemembers. You would need to find seperate arrangements for them when deployed fighting battles or when out on field trainig excersises. Civilians who might be required to work with an openly gay person atleast has the chance when leaving work to get away from them in his private life. Its not like that in the military. When fighting wars and conducting training during deployments you are required to live in close quarters side by side your fellow soldiers 24/7. Even when not dployed unmarried enlisted members must share quarters. Problems in retention, problems with recruiting, problems with moral resulting in problems in unit cohesion. All those things result in a less efficient and lethal fighting force. Its not worh it and should not be done. I'm a bit confused as to how many service members have been discharged under the don't ask don't tell policy. If the serevices don't actively try to find out what someones sexual orientation is how is it that thousands of people are being booted out. The answer is quite simple, but I'm sure not beleived by those who want gays to openly serve. If a soldier (whether true or not) lets it be known that he is gay, that soldier will be booted out. But the soldier will be discharged with an honorable discharge. So if thousands of soldiers are being discharged under this policy it is because the vast majority have decided that the military isn't to their liking and they want to be discharged. And why not if there are no negative repurcusions, like a discharge under less than honorable conditions.

    slamdunkt:
I don't believe ANY of the men and women who are bisexual or gay/lesbian have made the CHOICE to be what they are. It is like a race issue. Can you choose to be white or black? NO, 'emphatically no!' and for you to decide already what your kids can and cannot do is ridiculous. Let them live their lives and experience life to the fullest for them and not for you. How would you feel if ironically one of your kids came out to you someday? Also, in regards to making it other people's business. That is not what anyone is trying to do here, they are just trying to give every American the same opportunities...Do you disagree with that? If so, then you probably shouldn;t be living in a free society where people do have the RIGHT (not the choice) to be who they are! It is sad that we have to handle this with public figures and the government, but that is what it takes for most anything these days, so in no way are they attempting to make this your business (you do have the right to not read the article or follow up on it or even have an ounze of knowledge regarding gays in general) And, I find it hard to believe that you have read thoroughly what proposition 8 fully entails, I think you should read it, it could effect one of your kids someday. Some last questions..

Do you enjoy your rights with your spouse?
    Do you love your spouse?
How would you feel if marriage rights in general were questioned?
These are things gays everywhere in the world deal with and it's people like you who back-peddal progression. Thank God for my generation and soon enough these past nay sayers will be out of power!!!

By the way this is a 19 year old gay guy who will be joining the military

  • Posted By: MarylandChic @ 01/08/2009 10:23:37 AM

I can't believe this is still even a question. Of course homosexuals should be able to serve openly. It's ridiculous to me that it would be any other way.

Yes they should ,but just like men and women , they should have there own areas to stay. and now that we know that it is a birthdefect , it can be fixed. anniebcool@ aol.com

Why should we say "no" to any able bodied person that wants to serve our country? Any one that has a problem with the sexuality of an individual is ignorant. This outlook needs to be changed ,this is just the "new racisim". What next....gay schools....gay only drinking fountains? The fact is we are all humans....we can change what we think... NOT what we are and feel.

  • Posted By: mistercommando @ 01/08/2009 12:43:14 PM

People work with gay/lesbians in the regular work place everyday... and know that they are gay. Some don't care...some do... but you know and you deal with it to the best of ones own emotional ability. You still do your job and get your pay check from a gay boss. The military is just like any other job people, different is those with guns and hate towards someone, can kill someone by accident. In this day and age in American... Str8 men aren't ready for that. Sad but true.

This is nuts. While in the military, I don't know how many times I heard on the weekends "Let's go get laid." To the people quoting the Bible and telling how immoral gays are, Premarrital and extra-marrital sex is just as much a sin as homosexuallity. 99% of our military is condemned to hell for that reason. Get real America.

I don't know if this has been addressed in the posts, but the reason "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" is trying to be repelled isn't so that gay military people can announce "I'm here and I'm queer", but so they can't be thrown out of the military if it is found out that they are gay. Most gay people do NOT go around announcing their sexuality!
