AND if you can't deal with the rules of the military, don't join. Being in the military you have to be able to follow strict instruction. We know our place within rank and know how to and how not to embarrass our fellow service members.
So AGAIN check your facts before arguing because no where is it stated that gays are not welcome in the US military.
I have been reading these posts and what people fail to realize and acknowledge is that military life is different than civilian life. For those who call civilian life "The Real World", as if the military is not real, come to Iraq or Afghanistan with us some time, you'll see how "Real" it is. The military has this thing called "Good Order and Discipline" that is kind of the backbone of making our society different than working a regular job and living in society. You see, the military is a little more restrictive on its members in many ways than society outside the military. This is to ensure that our rank structure is respected and maintained, and that the missions we are tasked with accomplishing are done. Being in the military requires you to live, work, shower, and change in close quarters with others. Yes there are gays in the military already, but they are not aloowed to openly express that lifestyle under the current policy. That is the way it has been and should remain.
True, however there is something that is being misconstrued here. "open" means that anyone who is not heterosexual cannot have a relationship with someone they love (unlike heterosexuals- barring restrictions based on rank and so forth, which apply across the board). And if a homosexual couple is discovered to be in a relationship (assuming they are following all other regulations as is expected of het couples) they are discharged from service. "Open" DOES NOT mean that one gay man in the shower or the bunk will have the freedom to "hit on" or sexually harrass any other man in the shower of the bunk. Those regulations are already in place and we already deal with enough sexual harrassment (which gets mostly swept under the rug). Sexual orientation effects NONE of these things.
All the fear of being in close proximity/sharing body heat and so forth, is simply that: FEAR. It is all in people's minds and not a reflection of reality- which is that homosexuals ALREADY serve and uphold the regulations and codes of our military just as effectively as heterosexuals and deserve the same RIGHTS which are afforded hetersexual soldiers, which is mainly to have a relationship (within regulations) without being discharged from service!
Hey Usdoc - i said what did JESUS say. Not the old testament. and by the way, that quote was from Leviticus, not Genesis. If you want to get into a biblical argument, bring it on - I'm jesuit educated. But better check ur ammo. LOL
First of all, everyone is forgetting one very key principal here: A persons sexual preference should be PRIVATE. What people do in tghe PRIVACY of their bedrooms is just that...PRIVATE! If peopel want to parade around and openly decllare their sexual preferences, then THEY are opening themselves up to comment, criticism, and decisions such as whether they should be allowed to serve in the military or anywhere else, for that matter. If you are gay, hetrosexual, bi-sexual, metrosexual, etc. etc,. etc. ad nauseam, then here is the key to a happy, carefree life: KEEP IT TO YOURSELF. If you just CANNOT keep your mouth shut, then face teh damn consequences of your actions and NOW shut up. End of discussion. End of controversy.
I have served in the military for 28 years and fully support openly gay people serving as well. The military needs to break out of its homophobic paradigm. They need to learn to accept gays just as they had to learn to accept blacks, Hispanics, women and other minority groups. This institutionalized discrimination needs to stop!
I entered the service in 1972 and the following events happened in my tenure as a service memeber.
1 June 1973 Women Officer now have command authority....we now have a women 4 star general
Nov 1973 I attended MP school, with the first 4 women MP's....In 2005 the First Women MP was awarded a Silver Star.
Please get a grip, change is comming embrass it, welcome it and most of all make it better......
I personally think that if someone would even consider going into the military to support a country that doesn???t support them more power to them. I for one know that I wouldn???t give two shits about someone who didn???t give one about me. And half of the people out there wouldn???t even join the military, so be happy that someone wants to. The fact that someone you don???t even like is out the putting their ass on the line so you can sit at home on you computer, with your loved one nice and safe with insurance and happy children and bitch about the way they live their life when it doesn???t even effect you in the least is completely disgusting and appalling.
It would seem to me that my sexual preference is exactly that, mine. and although many people are attractive from a physical standpoint it does not reneder them healthy partners. Just because you identify your sexual preference does not mean you want any person of that sex as a partner. 'gayness' does not pass thru the water or rub off in the showers --so, if a service persons sexual identity is so shallow and fragile as to be threatened while serving with fellow gay/lesbian americans then let them not enlist.
Predjudice is an ugly, fear based position-it should not be spread among those willing to serve the USA alongside anyone able to call themselves a citizen of the United States. It is time for those God fearing individuals to fear Him silently(let's see how long they can remain silent and closeted)
Thanks goe out to wasabi28

I can't believe people are trying to use scriptures to prove homosexuality is OK. Look at these verses that Godfollower posted below.
1 Corinthians 6:9 (Whole Chapter) Or do you not know that the unrighteous [Or wrongdoers] will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: [1 Corinthians 15:50; Gal 5:21; Eph 5:5; 1 Tim 1:9; Heb 12:14; 13:4; Rev 21:8; 22:15] neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, [The two Greek terms translated by this phrase refer to the passive and active partners in consensual homosexual acts]
1 Timothy 1:10 (Whole Chapter)
the sexually immoral, men who practice homosexuality, enslavers, [That is, those who take someone captive in order to sell him into slavery] liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to [2 Tim 4:3; 1 Timothy 6:3; 2 Tim 1:13; Titus 1:13; 2:2] sound [Or healthy] doctrine,
And as for the moron who tried brining up some verse from Leviticus, some of that stuff is no longer applicable because Jesus came and died on the cross to fulfill the law. If you actually knew the Bible and were a Christian you would know that. In the meantime do not use scripture to argue your point.
Bible or no bible....the military is not a religious institution; it is a governmental agency. So whether you believe the bible supports or rejects homosexuality (and come on, like any other book it is up for interpretation so for all the hipocrits that want to call out gays as sinners..your opinion on the matter is only relevant to you and vice versa) the government cannot discriminate against people!!!!
This issue is being mingled with many other issues here. When ever we put sexual preference, race or gender in front of the ability of the person then we do ourselves and that person a great disservice. We become so consumed with the outwardness of people that we negate any benefit we may get from being friends, or serving alongside. Sexual preference is not a choice; instead, the choice comes in how one displays him/herself (acts). Let someone's ability to perform the task at hand be the deciding factor as to if he/she gets the job or not......nothing else.
Straight/gay is an arbitrary distinction important only to homophobes. What, are they afraid of being molested on the battlefield? Homosexual men happen to be wired to be attracted to men... just like most women. So what's the big deal? Are they afraid of women as well? There are a hell of a lot of male-on-female assaults in the macho, macho military for these guys to be somehow "afraid" of the homosexual in the foxhole with them. And the only thing "dragging down morale" as I've heard argued, is the utter intolerance for people who are different. Just like some UAW lifer keying foreign cars in the parking lot because they think they have some exclusive claim on "their" company - or battalion - the intolerants are the ones creating the problem.
There is an easy solution to all of this: ban homophobes from the miltary. In no sector of society is prejudice - against blacks, against women, against Japanese-Americans or against homosexuals - morally defensible. It's time to stop being bullied by the Neanderthals of the world.
Oh, and for the record, I am about as straight as they are. I love football. I love women. And for the most part, I use the higher parts of my brain in thinking about issues like this.
I was in the Army for three years, and I really do not understand why peopld insist on having openly gay people in the ranks. I certainly do not want to shower with a guy that finds my nakedness attractive, that would be very uncomfortable. That would be just like sending me to a womens shower, I would do my best to be respectful of course, however, I am a straight male, if they are attractive I will notice, especially if they have no clothes on. There is no reason for this. Furthermore it would put stress on units, that have plenty on thier plates already. These men and women need to worry about being the very best at what they do, so when they find themselves in combat they are focused, trained and ready. Please do not put additional stress on the troops. I think they deserve that at a minimum. Furthermore, the choice should be the military's, not civilians that do not have to serve. From my experience in the Army, I would say the majority of the Army is not looking to mix the ranks with homosexuals. Leave it alone.
People Really !!! Get ahold of yourselves. Why are we having this huge discussion. If you are someone who really thinks there are not Gays in the military right now, you need a slap of reality. What is really going to change by letting someone say they are gay? It is not like the Ads are going to change for the military, the ARMY is not going to come out with a new Slogan saying "Army, Be as Gay as you want to be". I mean really, We talk, work, shop do all of our normal everyday things around gay people right now, you just do not realize it. A gay person is not going join the military and receive a special Gay ribbon to wear on their uniform. And most Gays I know do not just come out and openly talk about their gay relations, in fact if you were not told you would never know if they were gay. So why would it be different in the military. Gays want to join the military to fight for our freedoms, and protect our country and those countries that can not protect themselves. They do not want to join the military and use it as a dating service. I am a 29yr old straight white male, I served in U.S.Army stationed over in Germany for 3 yrs. I knew I worked with gays, and it didn't effect me at all, because everyone in the military has a job to do, and as long as those people did their job, their sexuality never mattered. Just because the Govt says it is ok to be Open doesnt mean that gays are going to be chasing around your sons or daughters, they are there to fulfil the militarys mission. Our military is fighting for our rights as a country, what does someones sexuality have to do with that?
(DISCLAIMER: I love ALL people: gay, straight, BI, trans, butch, queeny, whatever...)
I Promise YOU: it's not like every big ole' nelly-queen is going to come RACING to a recruiter's office in their Audi A-4 wearing $350 jeans wanting to join the Military simply because "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" has been abolished. Most of these types of Gays are so LEFT that the ABSOLUTE last thing they'd EVER do is join a Government-controlled organization geared toward the "common" and the "team" instead of the individual!
Those gay men and women currently (and proudly) serving "in the closet" truly LOVE their Country AND are usually more biologically, mentally, and emotionally PERFECT for a career in the Military than ANY of their "straight" counterparts.
I'm YET to meet a GAY MAN OR WOMAN in UNIFORM that wasn't either "better prepared" or better performing than everyone else in their UNIT! -You NEVER know who is serving next to you...and that's the point, straight or GAY: It's about service and National Pride, NOT about what type of bar you frequent when you're NOT on a ship, plane OR in Iraq.
I myself, having just completed 8 Years of Honorable Active Duty service as a gay man can only offer this to ANYONE who took the time to read this: It was an AWESOME way to spend my 20's, get my degree paid for, and see the world...EVEN WITH spending 2 years of my time in Iraq and Afghanistan! I'd highly recommend the military to ANYONE who is searching for something MORE out of life, something bigger than themselves. I enjoyed and truly miss every second of it!
I left the military after completing my second enlistment and my Bachelor's Degree. Even though I had my commander, supervisors, subordinates, and friends questioning WHY I'd ever leave the military, I simply had to become a civilian. -Only to see if it TRULY was worth sacrificing a wonderful career, great friends, opportunities and values I CHERISHED just so I didn't have to live in fear of being "caught" one day.
It SUCKS.

Homosexual have been in the service for years, but they where in the closet about it not out in the open like now.
Serving ones country has nothing to do with one's sexual preference. Its about serving. And to me it makes not difference what sexual preference a person has. Let them serve.
Why not? They are people to, they can fight if needed just like us straight ones. They are just like everyone else they bleed red, suffer, and they are American their life style is no ones business but their on, and have all types of emotions just all Americans. So YES let in, let them fight.
Historicly many armies had gay soliders in their ranks.
But this is now and that was then.
Our nation has had a moral compus thrust apon us. No sex on TV like other countries have openly.
We are more tuned to vilonce as a nation.
We are the most violent nation on earth.
We lock up more of our own citizens than any other nation in the world.
More than Russia and China combined.
As such and a closed minded nation that we are . Gays in Military has no chance.
All it is at this point is a real distraction to what is needed and needs to be done.
This nation is Homofobic, it is racist, and has a screwed up moral compus.
Until we as a nation can over come our biggotries then there is no hope for Gays in the country never mind the military.
If your Gay stay home and put out the fight for equality.
Trying to be part of a program that doesn't want you is only going to make it hurt more.
You need to change peoples views that just because your Gay doesn't mean your not human.
I am hetrosexual and find no threat from Gays.
I am safe in my own sexuality.
I have found that thoes that tend to bash Gays have their own issues and only do so because of their own confusion and doubt of who they are.
Society tells them to be one way and they fight against what they feel and lash out.
Any violence or hate act against a gay person is not done by a Hetrosexual safe in his own sexuality. They wouldn't find Gays as a threat.
They do it because they are not sure about their own sexuality.
They may be Gay.
short and to the point : Your and idot.
Argh! The irony!
I do not support Obamas decision allowing gays in the military, I retired several years ago from the Air Force and myself as with many other people serving would not have stayed in with gays openly and freely serving, thus the military would have lost a lot of good people. My personal opinion is that the professional politicians who have never served in the military should have no rights in the say so over military affairs, I know this is not how our country was founded, but a lot has changed since then. I think the politicians who have never put in a day to serve should keep to their own business and let the military take care of their own. It will be a sad day for this country when it turns the military into a sorority. Why don't the politicans let the military members vote on this, after all they are the ones serving now. The military should not be put into the comparsion of civilian life.
Gays have been around for centuries - so have liars, cheats, fornicators of all descriptions, people who think only of themselves so they will do anything to protect themselves at the cost of everybody else. I wouldn't want to put my life and mission at risk for them but unless these people directly cause problems in the military, they get by. Sexuality seems to be the toughest issue for many people, especially regarding the military. Is it because people might be embarrassed to be naked in a common shower together? Or do straight people think gays will hit on them and the straight can't figure a way to politely tell them "no thanks, not interested"? I've never served in the military, I am straight, I have gay friends and they know I'm straight but I'd still like to be friends, and it worked out without compromising my beliefs. So is the military's biggest issue strictly personal offense, such as being in common showers together? Can any of you biased individuals point out any proven incident where a gay person caused any breach of security or military intent? You're in the service to serve and everybody can and should be who they are, as long as they're not posing a true threat.
