As a prior Navy officer I know what a detriment to good order and discipline it would be to allow gays to openly serve in the military. Any policy that negatively affects a military unit's or command's ability to effectively and efficiently carry out its mission should be summarliy rejected. The needs of the few should never outweigh the needs of the many when life and death decisions are made. There is a reason the vast majority of active duty personnel do not want gays in the military. The military lifestyle is completely unlike the civilian lifestyle. Not only do you work with your coworker, but you also live with your coworker. And your work most assuredly will involve dealing death and/or avoiding it. Ask yourself, those of you who have never served, if you would be 100% comfortable with a coworker who is potentially sexually attracted to you seeing you during your most intimate times? If you are completely honest honest with yourself, the answer is no. That doubt leads to hesitation. Hesitation doesn't lead to a lost sale or a missed deadline in the military. It leads to someone's death: someone in your unit, someone in your command. So the stakes are too high in the military for any social experiment with a misperceived minority group that chose their lifestyle. The US military is the most professional service in the world and that's why we win. Allowing gays to serve openly and not discharging them would severely damage that professionalism and cost American lives.
