SHEEP! You have no guts! Do what they (media) tell you SHEEP! Please bring it on! The sheep that feel homosexuals serving openly in the military is a good thing are so lost (in more than one way). The more you, the news media and pop culture push homosexuals in the military, assault on marriage and family, the more the people will turn against you. We will not let you sheep make us more weak and tear us down like you do our society, culture and nation. Please bring it on; you will loose, just like you loose in life. SHEEP!

I can't imagine what basis you have to honestly believe that people who support equality "lose in life".

People are people. It doesn't matter what their sexual orientaion is when it comes to fighting for their lives and the freedom of their country. I served with many gay people in the military and none of them ever let me down even though I was stupid enough to poke fun at them sometimes. That honest loyalty earned my respect for them. Just because someone is different does not mean they are bad. For heaven's sake! Grow up!

To Bobthomas: Man, you are one "Johnny Come Lately" Gays & Lesbians are already serving in combat and have been doing so since we've had a military. I am a retired Navy Petty Officer 1st Class and I can tell you we had them on all three combat vessels I served on during my career (1981-2001). The difference being is that they were "in the closet." we knew who they were but as long as they stayed to themselves there was little we could do or cared to do. If I remember correctly, the ones I knew were professional in the performance of their duties...What they did in the personal life, I could care less to know about.

i believe the ucmj specificly states not only bieng gay/les is unaceeptable, but any service members connecting!
for example, a male sargent and a woman officer (captian, etc). i have seen several instances including the example
i just gave so it's not like gays are being singled out!

I do not see what the big deal is with people being gay. I think that people should only mind their own business and stick to their own lives because most of them have worst problems like kids on drugs or being pregnant too young; however, they still find time to destroy people for being different. It is ridiculous! Let people be who they are, not what you want them to be! I do believe that as humans, and especially as a country, we need to greatly stop discriminating against people whether it be do to them being a different race, gender, homosexual, etc. before we lose all of the morality we have left as individuals! The bible has nothing to do with this, and people need to realize that we all cannot live from a book...Do NOT get me wrong I am a baptist, and I still believe people have a right to be what they want to be, do what they want to do, and most of all they should be able to serve our country; they are citizens of the U.S.A.. What happened to the first amendment? Maybe everyone should think about that before they say much more!

This must be handled by the military and not the public or congress. We do not have all the facts and we do have military professional people to work out these decisions.

I don't think it's a coincidence that this issue was thrown at Clinton, our last Democratic president, during his first 100 days, now it's coming up again at this time. Where was this article in the last 8 years? Let's not do to Obama now what the Republicans did to Clinton. The right-wing didn't want Clinton getting anything good done from Day One of his presidency, because they wanted to get back in power. So they distracted us with gays in the military, Watergate, Troopergate, and all the other things that didn't mean diddly-squat compared to the problems he was facing balancing the budget, getting a crime bill passed & trying to fix healthcare. Why don't we let Obama & his administration deal with economy first?? We are in a financial crisis, and we are at war. Let's not make the same mistakes over and over & allow ourselves to be distracted like this. Yes there are a LOT of issues that need attention - but our freedom isn't even worth fighting for if our children can't get educated properly, our citizens don't have healthcare, and the unemployment rate goes up and up. We elected Obama to CHANGE things, so we have to change too!! Don't pay attention unless it involves the economy, healthcare or education. FIRST THINGS FIRST.

Good point, let us online folks argue the little stuff and allow the politicians to get things done.

When you join the military you give up many individual rights. There is a certain trust level that needs to be cultivated within the military much like it did when the services were integrated. Ethnicity and sexual orientation are not what I believe is the same issue though. Few if any people outside of the gay lifestyle enjoy viewing the physical contact of same sex persons publicly (other than men enjoying seeing 2 or more females making out). To much of that is not even appreciated between the opposite sex, hince get a room was coined. There will be a certain discomfort from many male military members. When put to the troops, sailors, airmen and marines the majority does rule when it is a moral issue. Intergration was the right thing to do! I'm not so sure that sexual liberation is the right thing to do. THose that are opposed to the gay lifestyle should be viewed as no less tolerant than those who think they are! Tolerance means existing and accepting each others point of view.

If the military is ordered to accept openly gay personnel it will as it does with every other order. It will be a slow burn though and it will not come without cost. Sexual orientation is a moral decision not a cultural one. This makes the argument very devisive and different.

My goodness, this is 2009. Sexual orientation should not be an issue on any front. An individual does not choose to be gay and should not be disallowed from participating in society as a full member. Since I do not make it a practise of discussing my sex life at my place of employment and no one that I work with discusses their sex life, I would neither know nor care about their sexual orienttion. More important to me is their job performance and their integrity as a person. Is that not what truly matters?

im straight but i dont see why gays shouldnt be allowed, who they are attracted to has no effect on whetehr they can shoot, how far they can run or how well they can obey orders. however having said that most of the military dont want them there so this will cause a stir among the troops and the last thing they need is to be fighting themselves aswell as the enemy. so i think we should wait until after the war has ended and then ease gay people back into the military.

Everyone says that gays have been serving in the military for years, and thats a true statement. Im sure they have served for long as weve had a military, but I think that gays serving openly would ultimately damage moral and esprit de corp. Its easy to say let them serve openly if you???ve never served in the military before, because you don???t understand, nor will you have to deal with the repercussions. Personally, I believe it will open a huge can of worms that will prove costly to all involved. Consider these questions.

Will the barracks and dorms go co-ed? Why cant men bunk with women now? Will gays bunk with straights? You may say they already do, but are both roommates aware of the situation? I doubt it. Do you house them separately? Will the taxpayers condone spending their money to build gay only dorms? And what about the militarys sodomy law, will it be rescinded for all military members? What happens when a gay couple is stationed in a state that allows gay marriage or civil union? Will they be allowed to marry? Will they be able to receive the same benefits as straight couple? Will the taxpayers pay for those benefits? And now that the gays are out, what about the bisexuals and people who want sex changes? They have rights to. Right? Who are they going to bunk with? And lets not even talk about the close quarter living arrangements aboard a ship. If you think the military can make a homophobe bunk with a homosexual you better guess again. Theres no General with enough stars on his/her shoulder to make that happen. And also lets not forget there are a lot of holy rollers in military to. And family values are taken very seriously.

I can see the number of enlistments and retention dropping like a rock. I can also see the number of Article 15s and court-martials increasing dramatically. I don???t think we as a people have evolved enough to have all of this openness. What do you think this is Star Trek?

Gays do not belong in the military. Check history. The more the gay lifestyle becomes accepted the sooner the nationsfallen. Our nation is in trouble. We need to learn from the past what to do if we want to save our wonderful America.

Come on guys, it'snot like gay men are pandering for sex around every corner.
"Oh my god, there's a gay man in the shower with me? He must want sex!" It's no different than a straight person, we're not looking for sex left, right, and center all of the time. Saying that being gay will harm unit cohesion is equally ridiculous, we're all people, fighting for the same thing. It's the older generation who needs to take a step back and look at the damage they've caused by instilling these hateful values into the youth of today.

  • Posted By: tmmoore52 @ 01/08/2009 11:37:14 AM

Are gays any less caplable? Nope. Does their sexual preference keep them from performing their duties? Not at all. I guess the only question I have would be as to living arrangements. If two gay men can be roommates, why not a male & female, or any combination thereof. I've no answer or solution, it's just a quandry as to what will be done.
I beliieve that there may be confusion between tolerance & acceptance. You can be tolerant of one's beliefs in politics, religion, or just about any personal opinion without accepting they are right. Sometimes you have to agree to disagree.
That being said, to either ban or promote a person from a position because of race, religion, sex or sexual preference is discrimination, period.

  • Posted By: chelle300 @ 01/08/2009 11:31:16 AM

If sexual orientation doesn't matter in today's workforce why should it matter in the military? It doesn't. A person's sexual orientation doesn't determine how well a person does his/her job as long as they are doing their job right

    • Posted By: brianteg @ 01/08/2009 11:37:13 AM

Ive been in the Marine Corps for 6 and a half years and DO NOT agree with having gays in the military. When were on the ship or land based overseas we live in very close quarters and have to shower wth each other at times. I resfuse to shower with someone who is openly gay and i assure you that a majority of the military will agree. So will they have to make quaters for straght men, straght women, gay men and gay women? This will cause more problems then there already are. We should have a vote and see how it turnsout. Liberals will probably try to overturn it though just like theyre doing with prop 8.

The anti gay policy of our military is morally wrong and is a civil rights issue. Remember when blacks were not allowed in military units and later only in limited support roles such as mess hall duty. Let get things right and end this discriminatory policy against our gay US citizens.

Illogical and an insult to black military members

  • Posted By: SusQ @ 01/08/2009 11:37:07 AM

Question......The people that are straight out there in the world.....Did you CHOOSE to be straight? Right now most are saying no that they were born straight....so why do people believe that gays choose to be gay? God made some people straight and some people gay....He did this for whatever reason....it is not our place "to judge". Let people live their life.

All you religious and homophobic people are so ignorant. Tens of thousands of women are raped and groped daily around the world my straight men and we are putting all this enegry into men in the US, afraid to be peeked at in a shower..... Give me a break...religious or not, this is just so silly and your egos are pathetic and delusional.
