Disproportional of that conflict makes believe that a group such Hamas which technicaly has no chance to destroy Israel but their own is likely to fall right in the hands of Israel. And on the other hands Israel seems welcoming the opportunity to show off its muscle in the name of "right to exist", and "right to defend itself". After all said and done, civilians casualities will mount. Such action will elevate Hamas to a force to be recognize in any future negogiation. Israel will be seen as the honest, good powerful bystander that took so many lives. Quiet will return to the area, Both party will retire. And if there is any hope for a new solution for the palestinian issue. Israel will show outrage from one of its neighbors, another war will be waged, and so on. A long lasting peace will come only if Israel give up Palestinian lands unconditionaly, Israel is a taking a chance right now in Gaza taking so many lives and losing lives to achieve what probably could be achieved by giving back the land to its wrightful owner with no excuses.

I wonder how many Jews are aware of this fact. As a Jew, I have always been taught that Israel's Arab citizens have full rights and equality with its Jewish citizens. I am dismayed to learn otherwise. How can we say that Israel is a democracy if a large percentage of its citizens are disenfranchised?

    • Posted By: nudnik @ 01/03/2009 2:07:07 PM

The answer is that the Arabs voters have the same democratic rights as the Jewish voters, and more freedom of speech than in any Arab countries.

The fact that the Arab parties were not part of any Israeli govenment is their position that basic calls for the abolition of Israel as a Jewish State, which understandtingly, is not accepted by any other party.

An Arab minister is now a cabinet minister.

On paper Irrael Arabs may have the same rights, but as we see they they get the dirty end ef the economic stick. Reading Danial Gavron artical was a refreshing change from the comments at the end of any news about Gaza.

Why not visit Israel and discover the facts first hand than show your gullibility here? Anyone can write anything and call it 'fact'.

dear they the Isreali's soldiers do not let you to enter in Gaza to have the fair knowledge and images of the public. they entirely do not let the free press to have their observation from the crisis. if the Isrealis soldiers are sure of protecting the human values and most basic rights, so why the do not let the fair press to have the true Images conveied from the scene.
it suits best for all the display bilietral respect and reverance towards one another, otherwise the ill treatment of some of the regimes will get changed to some what solid complexes that will sometime would surely explode.
be fair with the people so that they should be fair towards you too.
finally, the oppression can never last forever. it is more the five decades the Plestinians have been suffering of many inflictions imposed by Isreal. but still no success and no gain. i am too estonished why the American authorities are generously funding for esclation of some what unapproachable treatment of Israel in the region.

Arab leadership around the world is more likely to have lasting impact.

Where has the outrage been from the upper reaches of the Arab community for the Hamas tactics?

That is where any hope for a real solution lies.

I believe that the only solution is change in policies of US. The whole world is suffering economic and other consequences of US policies. We should change our basic policy of supporting wars all over the world. We can reestablish our strategy and become the good superpower of the world again with support of nations all over this world.
Please read the interesting discussion of Time with Avrum Burg, the scion of one of Israel's founding families (His father was the deputy speaker of the first Knesset, and Burg himself later became speaker of the legislature, and a member of Israel's cabinet) :

Fine article, but I am a little sick of hearing this crap about the "Age of Obama". The man hasn't done anything as president yet, but he is already receiving more praise than Bill Clinton ever did.

I don't know if Hamas is aware that they are countries willing to fight the Israelis right to exist. Hamas need to stay out of it. They falling right in the Israelis hand.

Getitout: What unprecedented freedom you are talking about for the Israeli Arabs? Being a second class citizen to your own country?

Anyone who believes peace in that region is possible outside of God's Word is walking in ignorance. There has been fighting for how many years there. In scripture there was a king named David from that general region who went to war. But in the end his actions had lead to tragedy for his family and God told him this would happen. Are we any different in these modern times? No. Be not angry..., Live in peace..., Love your brother..., Get understanding....

Anything less is apartheid. Agreed 100%.

Now if only we can get our media to stop their bias towards the Israeli's in mainstream media maybe we will have a chance of finally burying this conflict once and for all. Our media makes it seem like Israel is being picked on for things that happened 60yrs ago by a bunch of terrorists but this is not the reality. They are being fought for things they are doing right now, today, things that most Americans would fight against also. As long as we have unconditional support for Israel we will hold equal responsibility for all those deaths and shattered lives. Our blind support for them is not good for them or for us.

Israel wants all the lands of Canaan (in their words) but she is left with two ways to achieve it. The first is to include the populations living on it and the next, her current strategy, is to steal the land and marginalize the people living on it. One has a chance of succeeding; the other will lead to another Jewish holocaust once our people lose support for their Zionism. This is already happening as can be seen from some of our posts, and will culminate with them losing the $4 billion a year we give them to support their massive military. Once that happens they're screwed, and these will seem like the good old days.

I am afraid you have forgotten something important.Palestinians first loyalty is to ther own people, second to other muslims and third to fellow arabs. The jews fit none of these categories.Even if the last 50 years of conflict never happened, the paletinians and the jews would almost certainly not find much of the common ground that is necessary for a cohesive functioning society of equals.Someone would still be on top and someone else on the bottom. This is the reality of tribal and religious politics, just ask Saddam.

The best life West Bank and Gaza Palestinians ever had was under Israel occupation, and they even elected their authoriries.

Create a neutral State, place Jerusalem in it and have the Swiss guard it. 90% problem solved.

The fact of the matter is that the Zionist state never wanted and does not want to see permananent peace in the Middle East. It does not suit her because once peace is achieved, it would not be able to extend its borders and grab its neighbour land; it would not be able to bully, invade and build illegal settlements; it would not be able to exit as a proxy state of USA and destable the region, which is also in the West's interest. Israel is also aware that in peace and peaceful environment, Arabs will be able to prosper their economies, develop technologies and possibly build their own nuclear capabilities with their oil money, which would threaten Israel military supremacy and a bully boy??? status in the Middle East. Israel wants a joy ride and has a merry go round in the occupied territories; it does not like Palestinians to throw stones and fire rockets when it drops cruise missiles, smart bombs, shells on Palestinians homes, streets and shops to kill innocent men, women and children in hordes and cripple their economy. The killing of civilians, the assassination of political leaders, the destruction of fruit orchards, the ploughing of homes, routine mass searches of the population, the separation of Palestinians from water supplies, the separation of farmers from their fields and the division of towns with the security wall ??? all combine to make this 40 year occupation among the harshest in the world.
In the past the illegal occupation of Palestinian territory and Israel's efforts ???to dominate, expel, starve and humiliate an entire people??? as front-line Israel soldiers who refuse to participate in the occupation describe it, was something that was tangential to US interests. It was a cause of Israel???s defeat against Hezebollah in Lebanon. The usefulness of Israel as a military ally in the oil-rich region was more important than ending the occupation of Palestine. Alexander Haig described Israel as our ???unsinkable air craft carrier.??? But now, the one-sided ???special relationship??? of the United States with Israel is also the root cause of terrorism against the United States. Israel, a country the size of New Jersey, has been receiving 25% to 30% of US foreign aid for decades. This tiny country has been receiving as much foreign assistance as sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean combined. This funding has made the United States taxpayer the underwriter of the occupation of the Palestinian Territories. And, this occupation is not just illegal ??? it is brutal.

The statistics presented in this article are heavily biased by the author???s opinion. In science it???s called ???cherry picking evidence???. Arab extreme left-wing parties are excluded from governing coalitions in exactly the same way that Jewish extreme right-wing parties, like Moledet, are excluded. Arab members of large parties are always part of the parliament. For example, Ariel Sharon???s government had an Arab minister.

The majority of the Arab population in Israel lives in rural areas and the $85 vs. $130 investment comparison represents disparities in investment between rural vs. urban areas than between Arab and Jews.

Gavron either does not know Israeli history, or is delibrately missleading the readers. The Arab parties were always counted in the leftist side, and they were the votes that brought Arafat and hiis terrorist into Israel (the Oslo Accord). It was against the wishes of most relevant part of the Israeli nation, the Jewish voters, both the Kennest members and opinion polls..

Now even the "peace" camp agree that the Oslo accord was a tragic mistake. Thia is the result of the Arab vote.
