To bighappy: If you were treated the same way the Israeli have been treating the Palestinians all these years (your land and resources seized and appropriated, your movement restricted, supplies cut off in a slow-motion attempt to suffocate and decimate you), you too would learn how to hate and kill. Racists like you that grant yourself a monopoly of rational thought (i.e., Arabs are terrorists and hate for no reason at all) are clearly a product of a very lopsided media--one that only represents Israel's side claiming rocket fires by Hamas were "unprovoked," that its disproportionate counter-response is merely "defensive" and thus legitimate. What is never publicized by corporate media in all this is the prosaic, everyday terrorism committed by Israel in what is one of the longest-running foreign occupations in modern history. This everyday economic and psychological terrorism (land grab, ethnic cleansing, restriction of movement by blockades, and total dispossession of an entire people) perpetrated by Israel on weak and impoverished Palestinians is the originary provocation (!) to which Hamas is a response and that fuels legitimate anger and hatred in the Arab world against its perpetrators! Stop the Israeli colonial occupation and aggression once and for all and that will do more to delegitimize cries for the destruction of Israel than all the military might in the world.

Maybe but i doubt it, I have no legs. You can guess why.

"your movement restricted, supplies cut off in a slow-motion attempt to suffocate and decimate you" :
Who did it, Israel? No, your Arab brothers, when they locked Palestinians in the cages named "Palestinian Refugee Camps". Of course after such treatment you became who you are, even long years of relative prosperity under Israeli occupation (Palestinians could move freely within their territories, elected their authorities, had enough food - compare how you lived under Egypt and Jordan) did not fix you. Compare Palestinians with Israeli Arabs, what a hugr differense, but 60 years ago they were the same.

    Americana,

I have seen your insults and ridicule, but nothing of substance. I hope your name choice does not reflect that you think you are representative. Here's one:

    "Posted By: 40YearR @ 01/04/2009 12:49:50 PM

I believe that Isreal has a right to exist, and I believe equally so in rights of Palestinians. These and other peoples have conquered and occupied these regions ceaselessly since before history. It is impossible to determine who has the superior, traditional, historical rights to any of these places, borders, if anyone has. Haram Es Sharif was built on the ruins of Soloman's Temple. James Michener wrote The Source, a popular '65 novel, about the archeology that shows these regions were settled long before any current ethnicity probably called themselves what they do today. Jews and Palestinians were in the Gaza Strip for a long time before the Palestinian riots drove the Jews out in '29. Isreal took the Gaza strip in '67 in response to the Six Day War, and then gave it up in '94.

Those few brief generalities and specificx are ONLY to say that there have been strife and conflict there always, and that nothing is clear cut. I do not favor Jews over Palestinians, or vice versa.

While I wish peace and self determination for the Palestinians, as well as for Isreal, I cannot help wondering what Isreal should do in response to bombs and rockets launched from Gaza. The U.S. would not refrain from action. No one is completely right. Maybe no one is more right.

A lasting peace has never been achieved. I cannot but wonder whether anyone will ever be able to facilitate that. Finger pointing by no one will ever contribute to a resolution."

What kinds of insults do you want to start with?

Does a country have a right to self-defence? Are there limits as to how much does a country have to take by being attacked by rockets? Where do you draw the line? Do you buy into all the propaganda on both sides? So before you take the high and mighty road to say one country is at fault more than another, take three steps back, and become objective.

  • Posted By: Thaifood @ 01/04/2009 10:05:54 AM

Oh, heavens, the Israelis blitzed the Arabs in the '67 War. Heaven forbid you should mention the Arabs began the War. Many of your omissions in your article would certainly undermine the credibility of your article if you had put them in, wouldn't they? It's like recounting a story about a woman who killed her husband but failing to mention he went after her with a knife first until she had the choice of dying or fighting back.

Can you imagine if all the countries surrounding Switzerland started attacking it, and Switzerland not only attacked back, but pummeled them, would you still suggest being tough on Switzerland?

Israel justifies this war because of Qassams being logged daily at Sderot for, oh, I don't know, 8 years?! But Israel has not mentioned all the horrifying suicide bombings, at bus stops, shopping malls, wedding celebrations, private homes that occurred before this. Israel has not brought out the pictures of Palestinian women, children and men cheering and passing candy out in the streets after these bombings.

Does anyone see anyone in Israel doing that now? And what if Israel, like the Palestinians and several Arab nations do now, started threatening to annihilate them ?

Oh, yes, and you omitted the fact that except for the last War in Lebanon, every single one of these several wars were started by the surrounding Arab countries, not by Israel. Changes the picture doesn't it. But you aren't really interested in truth, are you?

    • Posted By: aschreiber1 @ 01/04/2009 6:50:46 PM

The war in Lebanon was also started by surrounding coutrnies. Don't forget it was Hezbollah that ran across the border and kidnapped Israeli soldiers AFTER Israel had pulled out of "occupied" land.

As usual, a well considered article. For my part, I shouldn't comment on one small part of it, but I'm going to do it anyway. The section "Article IV: Refugees" has a couple sentences which read "But to Israelis, the notion implies an admission that they are responsible for the refugee crisis and the historical injustices leveled against the Palestinians. Israelis, offended at the suggestion that their country was born in sin, have drawn a clear line."
Aside from Antarctica, is there a piece of land in the whole of this world that hasn't been disputed in some way since we first started to call ourselves human? Even my own country, of which European-based humanity only began to take control a few centuries ago - was fought over by tribes of people soon after they themselves immigrated from Eurasia. Indeed, likely well before then, is there a place in the whole of this world which hasn't been fought over more than the land which now includes Israel? So as to "born in sin", if that be sin (and a case can be made that it is), I see no way that any person, any society, any country on earth today can make a case that they are faultless in this sense. As it relates to Israel, it all comes back to the Zionist belief that they are somehow more loved by God - my term for the universal deity - than any of the rest of us. I support Israel's right to exist and have control of the land roughly where they are, but how many of the rest of us share this particular Zionist belief?

    • Posted By: aschreiber1 @ 01/04/2009 6:16:07 PM

I actually thought you were going in a totally different direction until I read the last two sentences. Did you even bother to read the words that are coming out of your mouth? I would think that the fact that there isn't a place on this earth that hasn't been fought over and occupied by some other nation at one point or another would strengthen the Jewish people's claim that Israel belongs to the Jews! Just like you said, just because Palestinians "once" lived there doesn't give them a "right to return". Regardless of how they were thrown, bribed, tricked etc. out of their homes the fact remains is that they are gone. If you want to go making arguments about people who should have a "right of return" then why not have all of the Arab nations give back all of the land that they stole from Jews when they threw them out over the years? You can't have everything your way you know. It doesn't work like that. Something else people keep forgetting is that history didn't begin in 1948 there were thousands of years that existed prior to the creation of modern Israel where Jews, Christians, Romans, Muslims etc. all ruled Israel at one point or another. Lastly, I find it very difficult for the Muslim religion to claim that they were there first when their holy sites are BUILT ON TOP of the Jewish holy sites!

The road to peace lies with the governments of the Arab countries in the area. The countries of origin of the so-called Palestinian refugees should accept their return. No so-called refugee camps, no reason for violence. But this will never happen as the Palestinian refugees (who are really political prisoners in these camps due to the actions of their own governments) give the Arab countries an excuse for excouraging the on-going violence.

    • Posted By: Mr Funk @ 01/04/2009 6:07:13 PM

I've often wondered the same thing. If the Palesinians really are the "Arab brothers" the extremists claim they are, why aren't they being treated better? Even people(s) with whom the US has no close relationship are treated much more as "brothers" and welcomed here than what is happening to the Palestinians. The best I can come up with is that they are simply being used as pawns - a front line - in the broader desire of the Islamic Khilafat which believes that the whole of the middle east (and then more) ought to be theirs.

    Source: Thomson Reuters

Note: At least Reuters is letting the World Know that Israel is not favored in their Agresssion towards Palestine in Western & Eastern Europe and Around the World.

I Hope they continue this Carnage, so the World will SEE Israel is not this Peaceful Nation, towards it's neighbors and they are no different than their Former Oppressors [The Germans, Russians], the Media constantly Bombards us with on a Daily Basis.

The German People can Never live down their past and neither should the [Israeli Government] and its War Crimes.
    ---------------------------------------

LONDON (Reuters) - Thousands of chanting, banner-waving demonstrators marched in cities across Europe on Saturday to demand a halt to Israeli bombing in the Gaza Strip.

Protests were held in Britain, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Turkey as the Israeli offensive entered its second week, and before Israel confirmed ground forces had entered Gaza.

Israeli Arabs held a protest march, Kuwaitis also took to the streets, a day after bigger Middle East rallies, and peaceful pro- and anti-Israel protests were held in New York.

In Paris, police said more than 21,000 demonstrators, many wearing Palestinian keffiyeh headscarves, marched through the city center chanting slogans such as "Israel murderer!" and waving banners demanding an end to the air attacks.

Groups of protesters clashed with police. At least three cars were set alight and about 20 overturned by demonstrators as the march ended near some of the biggest department stores in the French capital.

In London, police said more than 10,000 people staged a march and rally to urge an end to the Israeli offensive against Hamas militants that has killed at least 446 Palestinians.

Similar protests were planned in some 30 other towns.

In many cities people waved shoes -- recalling the action of an Iraqi journalist who hurled footwear at U.S. President George W. Bush in Baghdad last month in a symbolic insult.

British demonstrators threw dozens of shoes into the street as they passed the gated entrance to Downing Street, where Prime Minister Gordon Brown lives, and shouted angrily at a line of 40 police officers on guard there.

"Come to get your shoes Gordon," one woman shouted as other marchers directed chants of "Shame on you" at Brown.

A spokesman said Brown had spoken again to Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Saturday and was pressing hard for an immediate ceasefire.

Leading the march were singer Annie Lennox, politicians Tony Benn and George Galloway and comic Alexei Sayle.

Demonstrators carried Palestinian flags and placards with slogans such as "End the siege on Gaza" and "Stop the massacre."

Israel says rocket attacks from Gaza by Hamas Islamists must stop before it halts operations, but the attacks continued on Saturday. Four Israelis have been killed by Hamas rockets since the offensive began.

    ANGER

    • Posted By: pinkpanther87413 @ 01/04/2009 4:56:00 PM

you forgot that Olmert should have stepped down a few months ago,, when he was convicted of criminal activity but now destroys...other than that,, all to true..and justified.

      • Posted By: Omaar @ 01/04/2009 5:18:30 PM

        True...

But he has this Mass Murder Spree in Palestine to keep him in Power as his Distraction from his Conviction.

        Just like Bush Jr....

What a Legacy to Leave Behind

  • Posted By: Pia1981 @ 01/04/2009 5:07:17 PM

The only solution I see would be for Israel to give the Palestinians the Gaza Strip. Israel, please, be big and strong, and give these people the land. No land is worth all of this destruction.

  • Posted By: Getitout @ 01/04/2009 5:01:01 PM

If the Palestinians want Israel destruction they going about it the wrong way. Few rockects accross the border will not be enough. A united Palestinian authority also will not be enough. Only a country that is similar and comparable to Israel to its weaponary can do the job. For a Palestinian state Israel has to give up a vast land area between the West Bank and Gaza. That it will never happened while Israel is in the area. Hamas and Fatah can embrace Israel, lay down their arms, accept any precondition to any proposal, Israel will not give up this land. So as far as a Palestinian state to be created, that will never occur. It didn't happened in the last 60 years it wouldn't happen in the next 60 years. One has to destroy the other one. Palestinian can't. Maybe now we know why Israel is been armed to its teeth, by the United States. Hamas need to stop giving Israel all the reason in the world to react the way it did. I guess Palestinians need to wait, maybe one day someone will come and say that Israel right to exist expire. Until then they need to stay out of trouble. And take care of themselves.

  • Posted By: pinkpanther87413 @ 01/04/2009 4:45:19 PM

United States will not allow the UN statement condeming the Isrealies actions today,, and it IS the UNITED STATES that PREVENTS any sanctions against Isreal,, for selling weapons to our enemies in China,, against the arms bann. Time for the US to bow out and listen to Reagan.. after the loss of 241 Marines he said "Middle-eastern politics are far to complicated for us to interfere" "at the cost of our blood is not worth it,,EVER" "let them stand alone"...To bad we herd nothing and still interfere, where ever we can cause hatred...Today we openly support genocide.. so who is next? Do we look in our own backyard, I SAID OUR backyard, called Native Americans.. who are not happy with the thumb we hold over them...Do we genocide them, due to cost, or the drunks who kill our children and refuse to learn??? WHO IS NEXT BUSH???

once again, a so-called "peace proposal" includes letting israel keep the best farmland while "allowing" the palestinians to keep the rocks and garbage dumps. of course, if hitler had been allowed to keep the sudetenland, western poland, and "france," we'd all be a lot happier today. lieberman uber alles!

Some how the Newweek system added all kinds of question marks to my comment. There are no question marks in this statement.
    So
I'll post it again, without, hopefully, any questionable punctuation marks.
    Isreal - A Debtor Nation
Since Isreal was created around 1945, America has donated millions, billions, trillions to its cause. The money has flowed unilaterally to Isreal to provide military defense, building and infrastructure in the country, food and housing, commerce, trees, banking institutes successful viability in the world. You name it and America has provided Isreal funds to provide it.
It is now time for Isreal to stop its brutal aggression, take responsibility, and provide those same millions, billions and trillions to the Palestinians, who it has injured so badly over the years.
Isreal owes the Palestinians. It is time for Isreal to pay its debt.

They don't insert those. When you copy something and paste it, their system doesn't read all the stuff that you copied and it inserts question marks where it can't translate. It's a dead giveaway to copying and pasting into a comment blank. I learned this by copying something and inserting it into my comment. Way back there. The machine does it.

The essence of it all is that two opposing sides expect to continue the conflict until victory is achieved over the other when victory for either is impossible to achieve. They are sadly beginning to need each other in a sick relationship resembling co-dependency. We will witness this forever. They can't solve the dilemma and we can't solve it for them. There is a process known as ostracism, wherein a person is agreed by all to be ignored by all, as if the person doesn't exist. All that is left for those of us who have to watch these two combatants publicly maul each other is to pretend that they do not exist any more and cease to publicize their conduct. If they cannot relieve us from this, then we will relieve ourselves.
