How is it that Obama can promise to fix the economy by throwing money into the crowd to wow them when all you can do is save it to cover the oncoming gas tax. Also promising to cut government spending while adding more committees to oversee the stimulus packages, a committee to oversee them and so on. I think there are a lot of great ideas that failed to be completely thought through.

kb8j47ur, I am not partisan, in fact I am a liberal Democrat. Please pardon me if I do not like much of Obama's policy. As I said before, he is using the same Wall St crooks that created this mess. We need a radical departure from the high finance, consumer debt culture for the US economy to survive, let alone recover.

Kb8j47ur your arguments are based on a ???Appeal to Authority??? which is also know as ???Fallacious Appeal to Authority???. Basically what you stated is devoid of valid reasoning. The last thing this country needs is more of ???I do not understand...its too complicated??? so let the 'experts' magically fix all our problems. The reason why the country's economy is performing so poorly: we have crooks leading the blissfully ignorant sheep.

      Nope,

What I'm saying is that you have a bunch of people on this blog who have no clue what they are talking about. If Obama's team can't get it done then vote him out in 2012. Until then just wait and see, because your opinion is uneducated and full of partisan bias because of which party your parents told you to be when you were little.

My husband and I have a small mom and pop business. From what I have read, this stimulas plan will not benefit us in the here and now. We may see a tax break at the end of the year, but that isn't going to help us pay our bill today. I feel that if I pay my taxes like all the rest, I should see some relief.

Samuelson is eluding to Globalization. This recession and subsequent recovery are truely within a Gobalized Economy. Hence traditional economic recovery packages and strategies, based on past historical US economic data, may not react in the same manner as past recovery packages. That the Global Economy has much more influence than it did in the 1950. 1960, and early 1980 economic recovery packages.

The best chance to entice companies to hire is to give them a tax cut for each person they hire. Make that tax cut meaningful and companies will hire. The other stimulus package items are just political gimmicks that will not create any sustained improvement in the economy. We need to start designing and manufacturing here in the United States again. Moving money from desk to desk, outsourcing and lending money to people who cannot afford to pay it back has brought the economy to its knees. It is time to start making stuff in the U.S again.

I see naught but failure ahead fo President-elect Obama's plan for economic stimulus...and if the incoming President is any student of past American and global history, no doubt he knows that any plan which depends upon a central government to evenly and adequately both fund and distribute any type of economic development.

What Obama's plan all boils down to is a list of "projects" desiigned to put American's to work, thereby affording them a paycheck. Sounds great on paper. but as FDR's New Deal taught us, that type of plan is good only as long as the government can afford to fund it. By the time any profect slated by the Obama administration is ready to break ground, it will have passed through so many hands that there will be little left to actually bankroll the payroll of the people who are to receive the laborious end of "King Obama's" master plan. I do not now, nor beleive I will ever have in my lifetime, any faith whatsoever in government oversight of any project that is supposed to benefit the "working class" of this nation.

Government's true purpose in a free and open society is to provide an atmosphere in which business either sinks or swims of its own accord, depending upon said business's ability to pravide goods and services the public wants. True capitalism, at its purest, is simply this: the working class works, and the owning class owns, and as times and tastes change, very often the workers eventually fihnd themselves owners. I would much rather follow my own desires and fail than be subjected to the whims of a federal government which feels it knows what is best for me.

Even a plan that was to put money directly into the hands of the people would not bring this period of economic slowdown to an end...the American economy is as cyclical as the seasons. So I say hunker down and hold on tight for things will get better one day...they always have when we place our destiny in the hands of the people who built and continue to have faith in the general population.

As a big proponet of sustainable "mixed use, mixed income neighborhoods, with lifelong learning and open space", I see the challenge we face as transforming our car dominated sprawl lifestyle. Spending to lower consumption seems a bit of a contradiction in terms......but where else are we going to go? Renewable energy, electric cars with nano batteries, a smart grid...and a healthier, "eyes on the streets" safer, pedestrian lifestyle. The sustainable neighborhood part takes some planning, not quite shovel ready. Last time we had this kind of nation unity and cooperation, somebody had to bomb us. Maybe another year of economic downturn and we'll feel bombed.

This article was just more neo liberal voodoo economics horse crap. Economic expansion funded by credit is what created the current crisis. The cure is not more of the same. Funny how he chastises China and Japan for SAVING to much! These modern economist have turned the ant into the fool and the grasshopper into the hero!

    America is so freaking doomed.
