Hamas, Hizbullah and Iran played the game of democracy better than the Bush administration. Can Obama change that?

I say, the best way to solve the problem of the Middle East is by US govt and Israel getting out of their land!! If America loves Israel so much and pretty much our entire govt is run by them..why don't you just give them one of the states..and be done with it.. no more safety concern for Israelis..and no more bloodshed to be blamed on from your side. There'd be peace in the Middle East..let the Muslims fight it out and let them deal with their own internal problems.. But of course..that's not the purpose of our good ole USA govt, we want to be there strategically..not bc Israel is sacred to the Zionist Jews or Christians..if it was..there religion would teach them to not cause holocaust of Palestinians in the hold land. And the practicing Jews claim....there isn't supposed to be a Jewish State until the return of their Messiah..it's illegal to occupy that land.. so exactly why are the European Jews put in Israel against the rights of ppl who existed there and stolen from them and then we support a regime who's treating them just like Hitler did to their ancestory.. So, b4 you show me anymore movies and stories of Holocaust..don't b hypocrites..and continue to support the killings of another race the same. What hypocricy..our govt has sold its soul to the highest bidder...the Zionism.. the devil form within.. all for power, greed and money..isn't that how most of them get elected..AIPAC..without them..they won't even get elected.. SELL OUTS !!!

America doesn't give a crap about the Middle East, except for Israel,, if they really cared for human rights, they wouldn't be such hypocrites to sit and watch and support Israel's massacre on Gaza.. they don't follow any rules.. it's the arrogant USA govt way.. what they're failing to realize is..with it's economy coming to ground, it won't have any way to keep building and using its military..sooner or later..what goes up, will come down.. Then let's see how we will act when we're the underdogs.. it will come to bite us ..for all the genocide and killing we've done across Middle East.. all for the purpose of our national selfish interest..steal from the Middle East..what better way ..then sway the world by spreading lies about Islam, calling them all terrorists..whoever stands up for its people, creating 911 ..and then invade all those lands and steal.. Dick Cheney and all the Zionist members .. old farts..forgetting they're all going to die soon and experience the wrath of God for their crimes..

I think what all of you US Media one sided journalists need to realize is that the Middle East and sick and tired of having corrupted puppet govts put in power of their countries that are supported by US for the only purpose to serve US and Western power interests, not the interests or rights of their people. If you want to really stop groups of ppl who fight against their govts and Western powers..that we seem to quickly label them as terrorists.. without realizing how much of terrorists our own govt and media act like to their people, then maybe you will see less resistance from those people. So, far it has failed miserably in all the countries..bc govts are controlled by US and Western powers, and no one stands up for the rights of those ppl and no Middle East country is allowed to built is military but how biased of our govt for supporting Israel to have and use the most advanced WMDs against the people there. Such hypocricy in the American Media.. I'm so sick and tired of hearing one sided stories.. You really want to solve the Middle East problems, stop stealing their resources, stop butting into their lives and trying to implement your version of democracy, and stop being hypocrites!!

Also, Israel has been forcibly removing Jews/settlements from the disputed territories...and still the rocket attacks continued...Hamas doesn't want peace, they want power. They don't want land, they want the destruction of all Zionists.
They don't care how many Palestinians are killed - - because they can keep more of the Iranian blood money for themselves. Without conflict, there is no need for Hamas...end of the conflict means the end of Hamas...and they don't want that.

  • Posted By: atlantis @ 01/15/2009 5:01:55 PM

I believe that the most fundamental right as a human is the ability to leave in peace and pursue your dreams. That cannot happen if Hamas sends rockets across rockets to israle, and Israle and other (under pressure) do not allow Palestanians the freedom of movement or build institutions of governance. The root cause has to be addressed , the land and the status of refugees. Otherwise there will neer be any peace.

  • Posted By: atlantis @ 01/15/2009 4:56:37 PM

when I see all comments that Israel has the right to defend themselves, and Hamas is a terrorist organisation, I really pity the level of ignorance behind them. Does anyone know that Israel effectively the Palestanians from their land and gave them NOTHING in return. For more than 50 years Israel and its proxy US refuses to even discuss this matter. What will you do if say a hoard of Mexicans across the borders invade you land, shut you in an area less than half the size of Washington, do not let you leave, and refuse to talk or negotiate?

When will american reporters start to speak the truth. Isreal has been an aggressor nation from its inception. It began with the intent of ethnically cleansing the land of all Arabs. isreal's policies and practice are a combination of the worst of the holocaust, apartheid and american racist practices. That country has broken every effort at a truce, including this one. while the truce was being installed, isreal was planning this current invasion. before the 6 months of the truce ended, isreal bombed gaza with targeted assassination. of course hamas refused to continue the truce!

america can impose its power very simply by stopping the armatment shipments to isreal. it is american weaponry that has been used to bomb the palestinians. white phosphorous and depleted uranium tipped weaponry is being used against all international treties and standards. this makes isreal oa rogue aggressor nation and has justly been cited by the un many times for its crimes against humanity and illegal war making.

unless obama is willing to go up against the aipac lobby and call for a cessation of sending armaments to isreal, he will beno better than any of his predessesors. if he operates with any sense of political integrity, he will note the hundreds of thousands of jews who oppose the isreal invasion of gaza. he will pay atention to the illegality of isreal. he will cut off all aid. and he will force isreal to get out of gaza, pay reparations for damages, force the removeal of the invasive partition wall, and return all the stolen land. isreal also needs to be forced into the creation of a real democracy that gives the same rights to all peoples within their borders. the question is whether he will have the courage to do this.

    • Posted By: libertyfirst @ 01/14/2009 1:18:09 PM

Instead of asking when America will stop supporting Israel, why don't you ask when will Hamas and Hizzbullah start valuing their own children's lives more than the political power they so desperately cling to? The notion that the US will walk away from Israel and embrace a way of life that is antithesis of our way of life will be the day that the sun freezes over. So, get over it...the only way this madness will ever stop is for both sides to lay down their weapons and accept each others right to co-exist. Which, by the track record of these past 60 some years, doesn't look like its going to happen anytime soon.

Shiite Iran now holds sway over not only its own territory but also wields enormous influence in Iraq,Syria and Lebanon. In the future,a nuclear capable iranian military will be able to send tank battalions and troops unhindered and unopposed right to the border of israel itself. Its fighters and bombers will fly from bases all across this wide region with no need to ask for airspace permission and they may very well be able to drive the Jewish people into the sea.A decade ago that would have been an Iranian mullahs pipe dream. Now it is coming true.

Israel first put its nose in the Arab tent. Then its ears. Then its neck. Then its shoulders. Then its belly. Finally its tail. The tent now BELONGS to Israel.

Yes, Mr. Obama for that matter any Tom, Harry, Dick President can resolve the conflict any where if it is in the interest of USA. Following world warII when USA was languishing in the newly bestowed prestige as the Victor, did not and perhaps could not visualize the pale and the horizon, in particular the role , resposibility and talent needed to remain the leader of the so called free world. Decolonizing process which just started following the war did not automatically extablish social justice nor did it find right partnes to propagate and protect the interest of the free world. By not including USSR, as was then known in the reconstruction plans of Europe and Japan under Marshall plan was not a good statrt. Intelectual shortcomings on the part of US and European leaders in acknowledging dire needs of ordinary people in their own country and in the newly decolonized territories led to the groundswell of demands for social justice and emancipation from dire poverty which are the original causes of conflicts around the world. These were accentuated by religious discriminations, disfranchisement of political opposition and zero tolerance to challenging parties. Arab world's political scenareo was caused and developed over last 68 years and and one could visually see the faults and failures in creating a dichotomy which will soon eclipse the potential objectives of human goal. Israel (Jews) and Arabs are not party in this conflict nor are the responsible for what had happened in last 68 years, it was the so called estitute leaders of the so called West and talented visionaries in collaboration with specialists, advisers and bureacrats brought it upon the humanity to bear the ill founded ideology and strategic plans to cause cruelty, depravation and perhaps destruction of a rational human society.
Time has come when whole world must decide without the Arabs and Israelis on the table and redraw a plan, rethink the ideoplogy for survival of mankind. The risk of losing sutainable human society will be a justifiable cause to put these two advesaries to in their right place. Freedom is an aspiration but when it is under threat of destruction, it cant be left to the ones destroying it to defend it.

It held out more than five times longer than all the armies of the Arab world did in 1967, and by the time a ceasefire was brokered, Hizbullah was still pouring rockets into Israel, forcing hundreds of thousands of people to take shelter.
The end of your article is the real answer for Israel wage war on them until they no longer exist. Iran is sponsoring a lot of this terrorism and supplying the rockets and should be dealt with accordingly. Obviously Israel will have to do it now since we have no spine to do it after Iraq.

Obama warns of prospect for trillion-dollar deficits for the fiscal year that ends September 30, 2008, and as of November 19, 2008, the total of U.S. federal debt was $10.6 trillion. with about $37,316 per capita (that is, per U.S. resident).
I believe this the is time to start cutting the spendings, and we should start by stopping aid to Israel, Egypt and all other third world recipients.
Israel gets over $3 billion and Egypt around $2.6 billion from our tax-money, most of the foreign aid goes to corrupted regimes under the form of cash or military aid. We're bribing dictatorial regimes to buy their silence or to starve their own populations. I believe we need this kind of money to be spent here in theU.S. where it's most needed, we have more than 40 millions people uninsured, we've seen people dying with little support during Katrina hurricane. Our economy is in dire situation and we do not have the luxury to spend the money the way we used to.

The biggest fraud expenditure and expenditure in our country is SSI. There are so many people on SSI that it even eclipses Social Security payments to retirees. Seems like if you got a hangnail you can go on SSI disability and remain there forever. Not only that you get paid in the rears too!!!! Millions of people are on SSI Disability and have never paid into the system. I am all for helping the truly needy but this program is getting ridiculous. I know of one man whom I have known for thirty years that was diagnosed with a "temper disorder" at age 13 and began collecting SSI now at 43 he has made this his career!!! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH get the deadbeats out of this system if you really want to reduce spending cutting 2 billion from Israel is a drop in the bucket compared to the 758 billion dollar SSI program. Maybe if all the not truly needy were given the boot we could increae payments to the truly needy and low income elderly.

I wish it were that simple, Brando. I agree that from the perspective of a layman, it seemingly makes perfect sense to stop sending money abroad. Americans act as if foreign aid is a matter of benevolence when it really is a matter of perceived self-interest. If the United States were to suddenly halt foreign aid and the flow of enormous sums of money abroad - not just to Israel, but also economic incentives, financing to development programs in the thrid world, common secutiry alliances, etc - its hegemony would crumble. Read up on Hegemonic Stability Theory - the United States maintains its power and economic influence (which, of course, is directly tied into how well the economy does) thanks to the cost-benefit equation of the freeridership it provides for other countries. It's what makes the US tick. Eliminating them would accelerate the decline of US power in the world, along with the decline in your economic fortunes.

I hate quoting myself, but I posted this in one of my earlier writings below,
"The concept of inherent American goodness is ingrained from an early age and thus understandably lapped up by the masses. But even examples of benevolence primarily serve national self-interest: for instance, the Marshall Plan was because we could not allow a weakened Germany to sit next to the Iron Curtain, and much of foreign aid is because creating benefits is necessary for the hegemon's stability, even though there is a cost to be paid. Which is why you just shake your head when you hear tripe like, "you complainers, we're always bailing the world out and you criticize us" from the insular-minded."

      • Posted By: MBrando @ 01/08/2009 7:57:30 AM

Jonah, I agree to some extent with what you've said, but you don't think that the the US power in the world will be better off if we start using our aid more wisely. Instead of giving billions of dollars to dictators with the purpose to maintain them in power, Moubarak as example or sending weapons to Israel to shell innocent civilians in Gaza another example. Think about the cost benefit in the long run if we start using this aid for the purpose of promoting democratic regimes and real changes in the Mid-East, help them to educate their own populations, and help to fight diseases in Africa another example.
Until now, what we've seen like I said before, we're using the aid mostly to bribe the dictators, the result is what we have today, a mess. By giving a freerideship to other countries like you've well said and by helping dictators to stay in power, we're playing in the hands of terrorists. In other means we're creating more terrorists. Fighting terrorisme start by fighting the corrupt regimes in the Middle-East and North Africa.
Marshall was a great man, his plan was genius, the cost was reasonable and the benefit was spectacular, unlike the foreign aid we're giving away now where the cost is high and the benefit is minimal, in other way we're doing more harm than good.

To answer your question can Obama outwit Iran and other terrorist groups - answer no, if they had any brains they could be dealt with they understand only one thing killing and torturing to advance their anti-Israel anti-American poistions.

One of the only ways for us to ever stay on top of the Middle East and other long running conflicts and numerous other hotspots around the world, will be for President Obama to continue to surround himself with the best brains available! America is what it is because we lead the world in innovation, entrepreneurship and the ability to put these ideas in motion. Not to mention our significant financial strength which the rest of the world is getting a taste of has we struggle to right the financial ship. We have a wealth of talent in this country hopefully the President will put "All" of it to work. Some of the greatest political and military brains in America are not in any office, but we cannot let their talent go to waste has in the past, putting out some of these fires would be trly great challenges for the likes of Gen. Colin Powell, Bill Clinton, Mike Boomberg, Condoleza Rice and Warren Buffett to name a few, what a strike force they would make! If we ever really want to solve some of the numerous problems festering outside our country lets find a way to use the truly great minds we have in this country because we don't have enough "cabinet posts" for them!!!

Hills in the Judean desert.Judea or Judæa (Hebrew: ??????????, Standard Y??huda Tiberian Y??hû?????h, "praised, celebrated"; Greek: ??????????????, Ioudaía; Latin: Iudaea) is the mountainous southern part of the historic Land of Israel (Hebrew: ?????? ????????????? Eretz Yisrael), an area now divided between Israel and the West Bank (itself partly under Palestinian Authority administration and Israeli military rule).

The name Judea is a Greek and Roman adaptation of the name "Judah", which originally encompassed the territory of the Israelite tribe of that name and later of the ancient Kingdom of Judah. The area was the site of the Hasmonean Kingdom and the later Kingdom of Judah, a client kingdom of the Roman Empire. In modern times, the name "Yehudah" may be used by Hebrew speakers to refer to a large southern section of Israel and the West Bank, or in the combined term Judea and Samaria to refer specifically to the West Bank area south of Jerusalem.

Come on, Fat Joey...I know you're a hardcore, foaming-at-the-mouth Zionist, but to use, "IF THE PALS WERE THERE FIRST WHY IS IT CALLED JUDEA?" as an argument is fantastically silly. Nobody - not even the Palestinians - are disputing that the Jews were there thousands of years ago....even the arguments from the opposing side are more complex than that. There are better, more coherent arguments to be made in favor of the Jews (e.g., see my post below regarding the emergence of a Palestinian national identity only in the recent 20th century).

Most of the commentators in this forum forget or just deny that the root of all the problems in the Mid-East in general and the arab-israeli problem in particular is the occupation. Israel for 60 years occupied and still occupying arab lands.
The policies of the current Bush administration are not helping, during the eight years this administration has spent in ruling the U.S. made things worst, by giving the green light to the israeli government and turning a blind eyes on all the crimes Israel has commited in West-Bank and Gaza.
All this administration has succeeded in is to radicalize more the arab street and it will make it harder for the next administration to deal all these problems inherited from the current administration.

    • Posted By: newtral @ 01/08/2009 4:48:14 AM

Yes. Unless we cure the root cause of the problem, it will be always there. But israel is fighting to death to avoid that cure.

Now Brain2 you show your agenda finally. It is nonsense that the 'Jews are the rightful owners' - your argument is based on religion and not on facts. I prefer to deal with facts thank you.

I Well I think you read parts you like and ignore the FACTS:
If god is nonexistent then I offered the Bible as a history book backed by Archeological findings. (and also other books from the Greek and Roman times) These findings show Jewish kingdom and life for centuries prior to the existence of the first Muslim. However I think it is easier to overlook both facts and faith and just write nonsense.

              • Posted By: sanctuaryvb @ 01/06/2009 10:59:40 PM

Then how can you inconveniently ignore the fact that there was no Israel for approximtely 2000 years? I'm not ignoring any facts, I respond to any question given me so don't be such a dick. Ask and I'll respond and not selectively either.

          • Posted By: sanctuaryvb @ 01/06/2009 8:11:10 PM

            Prove it does.

        • Posted By: Brain2 @ 01/06/2009 7:06:59 PM

So you think that God is non existing entity! Tell that to the Muslims, Christians, and Jews of the world (They all believe in the same God!)

However you can treat the Bible as just a book of history and then you will see that along with archeological details found in the general area of Israel (Including the Golan Heights) There were the Kingdome of David and the rest of the Israelites.

If you do not believe in History and Archeology then just understand this:
I the start of the 20 century France and England played Good and created many countries in the middle east. They gave most of them to Arabs (Lebanon, Syria , Jordan???) and one for the Jews (yes the old Israelites who did live in Israel for all the thousands of years and under different rulers.) So now at least you understand who???s lan it is and why. (Of course if you do believe in God and you happen to be a Muslim you already know that Muhammad himself wrote in the Koran that the land of Israel belongs to the people of the book ??? the people are the Jews and the book is the Bible).

So hopefully now you understand why the Jews are the rightful owners of the land of Israel. It also helps if you do not ignore that the Jews were forced out of every Arab country and managed to escape with their lives (that is the luck ones) and nothing more to rebuild their life in Israel. (Yes not all the Israelis come from Europe after the Holocaust. Many came form the Arab countries and some have never left Israel.

Another historical point: The so called Palestinians (Arabs) are people who followed the Jews into Israel as they rebuild a desert land into the land of milk and honey as Israel was described by God when it was given to the Israelites who left Egypt. (Yasser Arafat himself was born in Cairo Egypt as most of the so called Palestinians who followed a better life in Israel then in their Arab homeland.) Another historical point of view ??? Palestine was the name the Roman gave Israel in order to destroy the connection between the land and its people. At that time there were no Muslims in the world as they came to be only in the 7th century. So Jews were in Israel a good 800 years before any Muslim came to be in existence.

    • Posted By: sanctuaryvb @ 01/06/2009 6:29:03 PM

I have made this same point many times throughout this forum...

  • Posted By: mommyof3 @ 01/06/2009 6:48:38 PM

Yeah, let's focus on our own country. We'll deal with this later like once Russia starts WWIII and allies with all the leaders of the world who love to see America and it's democratic ideology go hell!! While we are here dealing with our economic issue the evils of the world will be brewing up their own master plan to destroy democracy once and for all. And that won't only mean the end for Jews but the end of America as we know it. Look at the "Big" picture people. So for so many people who think this doesn't effect America, get your head out of your A.. and stop being so nieve!! If America wants to continue to live in democracy it needs to be protected not only here but in the rest of the world for our American well being!! There needs to be more democracies on our side, just look to see who the enemy is!! Don't you guys remember 9/11, or did you guys forget so quickly? There we massess of Palestines civilians cheering at the death of Americans! Why should I sympathize with those who want to see America and Israel doomed? Unfortunetely the same people who hate Israel hate America too. So for those Americans who think let them just kill eachother who cares, well let me tell you this, when they are done with the Jews they will come after you!!

    • Posted By: newtral @ 01/08/2009 4:44:17 AM

Mommy of 3: Americans are good and peaceful loving people but only the bias support of your leaders influnce by the israeli lobby creates the problem. It is in the best interest of America to push for a peaceful settlement of the dispute in israel and palestine. America undoubtedly can do that in a very very short period of time by being a real just mediator.

No, Godwin's law states that, in any given argument on the internet, the likelihood of a comparison to Hitler being drawn approaches 1.

It says nothing about winning and losing.

Touché, though in fairness, the person who usually comes up with the Hitler metaphor is usually a moron, grabbing at the first example of what they consider to be true evil in a gross oversimplification just because the horrors of WW2 are there for the taking. I guess in my view that's always been akin to forfeiting the argument because you're too stupid to think of any other way out of it. But you're right, of course....Godwin's Law is just the tendency.

We should recognize the current conflict for what it is: Iran waging a war against Israel by proxy. Their strategy is to inflame and curry political clout among Palestinians and the Lebanese. There are still huge populations in these areas that are bent on the destruction of Israel. The Arab powers that be; Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and now Iraq have made nice, at least officially with Israel. The Iranians are the lone hold outs who still speak of Israel's destruction. The best long term move at the present is to escalate the war and defeat Iran, Hezbollah, and Hamas. Full defeat and destruction of this devious triumvirate will be the first step in securing peace. If these war mongering enetities can be destroyed, it will give the people who want peace a chance to stand and lend their voice. Sadly, nobody has the courage to take this view, let alone act on it.

    • Posted By: newtral @ 01/08/2009 2:56:45 AM

No you are wrong. Iran is helping their brothers palestinians gain their liberty & freedom. If the palestinians can live with dignity and freedom then nothing to worry from the iranians and I believe even al qaeda. This is the real problem.
