You used to be a fairly trustworthy magazine. Now after many comments to the error on slide 4, saying Jews did not accept the proposal along with the arabs, is an outright lie and you refuse to edit the story. You are now making news, tho flawed, and therefore no longer can be trusted to report a fair and balanced story. It is sure getting hard to find an honest newstory anymore. Another one bites the dust. Turn around, your bias is showing...

The source you cite as the basis for your claim that both Israel and the Arab states rejected partition in fact contradicts this. For example, on page 124 of James L. Gelvin's Israel-Palestinian Conflict, your purported source, the author says that the Zionist movement not only supported complying with the partition, they lobbied for it in the United Nations. When Israel declared independence, it did so according to partition borders. This was met the next day by an Arab invasion.

Considering that your source contradicts your claim, can you cite a single source to back up your distorted history? If not, please correct the record.

    Dear Sir, Madam
In slide 4 you write that both Israel and the Arabs rejected the partition plan. Fact is, the Jews living in the post British Mandate area were not happy with the partition plan but nevertheless, they did accept it!
    Please correct this erroneous information.
    Thank you...

I strongly suggest that you check your facts. In slide 4 you are suggesting that both Israel and the Arabs rejected the partition plan. The fact is that the Jews of Palestine were not happy with the compromise solution of partition BUT nevertheless accepted it

If you are going to present history, pleae do so correctly.
The following link (United Nations website) shows the correct map of the partition proposal.
The Jews accepted partition, and Israel continues to celebrate the November 29, 1947 UN accepetance of the resolution.
The Arabs did not, and celebrated the vote with terrorist attacks,
The end of the British Mandate and the declarationof the State of Israel (suggest your reporters read the Isaeli Decalration of Independence) was marked by invasion by the armies of 5 Arab states in what had been declared by the Arab League was to nbe a "war of extermination".
Borders were never agreed to since the Arabs never agreed to existence of Israel, so much so that the Arab and Muslim states voted against UN General Assembly Resolution 194 (concerning refugees).
The 1948 war was marked by the ethnic cleansing of Jews from all Arab controlled areas.

The other commenters are too kind. This is an absurd rewriting of history and is an example of exactly why there are problems in the area to this day. There is simply no disputing that the nascent State of Israel accepted the partition plan, and the Arabs did not, choosing instead the policy of rejectionism that continues to this day.

As also pointed out, the map itself is incorrect. The "international" area designated by the UN was limited to Jerusalem, so intended to keep that city open to the world's tourists. Of course, with Jordanian control of the city at the conclusion of the war, this was not the case, with Christian and Jewish Holy Sites closed, desecrated and destroyed. A direct and obvious difference from the Israeli policy since the repatrioting of Jerusalem in 1967.

As observed by other respondents to the article, it is incorrect to state the Jews did not accept the 1947 Partition plan.
This is a significant error, as it releases Arab states and the Arabs who lived in what was then called Palestine from
responsibility for the start of their endless rejection and wars against Israel. Also, your map of the partition (slide number 4) indicates the areas allocated to the local Arabs (who now call themselves Palestinians, but did not at the time) as "international" - the only part that was set to be international was Jerusalem.

Sllide number 4 is incorreect. The Jews did accept the partition plan, the arabs did not. If they had theer would have been an arab state today. the area labeled 'international Zone' is in fact the area which was proposed by the UN to be the Arab State. The Arabs attacked Israel, and lost. Before the June 1967 war, Israel was not in the west bank or Gaza. Why wasn't an arab (Palestinian State) created then by the Arab occupiers; Jordan and Egypt? Please amend the slide

According to slide 4 of Gaza's Old Wounds (attached), you state that "Arab and Jewish leaders reject the [partition] plan". Please enlighten me, for this is the first time I have heard that the Yishuv rejected the plan. Also, the "map" depicting the partition plan is color coded so as to reflect the "arab zone" as non-existent (instead, you code it as the "international zone"). I demand an explanation for this--how can I depend on Newsweek for objective and accurate reporting given these inaccuracies? Who do you hire to prepare and/or edit you materials? Lee

Free the Palestinians from Hamas. Free the Lebanese from Hezbollah.

Excerpt from the Times shows exactly why this is Hamas fault and the Gaza citizens are a victim of religion -
A car arrived with more patients. One was a 21-year-old man with shrapnel in his left leg who demanded quick treatment. He turned out to be a militant with Islamic Jihad. He was smiling a big smile.

???Hurry, I must get back so I can keep fighting,??? he told the doctors.

He was told that there were more serious cases than his, that he needed to wait. But he insisted. ???We are fighting the Israelis,??? he said. ???When we fire we run, but they hit back so fast. We run into the houses to get away.??? He continued smiling.

???Why are you so happy???? this reporter asked. ???Look around you.???

A girl who looked about 18 screamed as a surgeon removed shrapnel from her leg. An elderly man was soaked in blood. A baby a few weeks old and slightly wounded looked around helplessly. A man lay with parts of his brain coming out. His family wailed at his side.

???Don???t you see that these people are hurting???? the militant was asked.

???But I am from the people, too,??? he said, his smile incandescent. ???They lost their loved ones as martyrs. They should be happy. I want to be a martyr, too.???

Not really, Israeli policies have made hardline groups like Hamas more popular and that's why Hamas got elected over the more moderate Fatah. i.e. Israel keeps radicalizing people and creating more enemies when they already have enough.
Nobody is born a terrorist- they are made. Do you think a Palestinians kid growing up with justice, security,. education, food and the dignity that every human being needs would become a terrorist or radicalized. People matyr themselves when what they have is not worth living for hence the promise of future riches/ respect etc is very alluring.

Bajan wimp and Daphne girl, you two Muslims are so full of hate you only see thru your hate-filled tunnel. No matter that the Israelis aren't perfect, they aren't the aggressors, they are not evil. You are the evil ones. Why can't you let the Jews live in peace in that little sliver of a land? You want nothing less than the whole world. The Muslims are at odds with everyone in the world. You are evil people. But the Lord God of Israel will demolish you people in His time. Then you will know who the true God is. But it will be too late for you. You already have a foot in Hell.

    • Posted By: Mzalendo @ 01/13/2009 3:09:11 PM

That little sliver of land was forcibly taken from the Palestinians and they have been progressively pushed of what little land they have left and treated like dirt by the Israelis.

Israel and Zionists have pretty much exhausted the compassion that I had for them after all the holocaust stories, mostly because i would have thought that having gone through the Holocaust, they would be the last people to treat others like they were treated by the Nazis. But I guess it's OK if they do victimise Palestinians in their own land as they were victimised in their European homelands.

If Nazis were so bad, why do you keep emulating them?

This is how this conflict started. People had differing views and started arguing and bickering. It started escalating with name calling and slander. Then cursing each other hoping for their deaths. Then the hope turned into a reality as they started murdering each other in the name of their god. Eventually this murder started to look like genocide. The only difference I see here is the absence of murder. You're following in their footsteps.

It is time for the US to take a second look at the so-called "special relationship" between the US and Israel. The Jews have been taking advantage of the Palestinians ever since it was "created." They have stolen land, established illegal settlements, humiliated the Palestinians by requiring them to stand in the sweltering sun and/or freezing rain for hours on end just to get to work. It has built an Apartheid Wall, blockaded the sea ways and they have done everything possible to make life miserable for the Palestinians. These money-grubbing *** have one ultimate purpose: to steal all the land of the Palestinians. Nothing else will satisfy their insatiable greed. Israel is like a cancer that will continue to fester and cause problems to the world at large until it is finally excised from the face of the earth. It has to be kept in mind that the only reason Israel was established in the first place is that no civilised nation on the face of the earth wanted these people within their own borders. One occasionally wistfully muses on how peaceful the world would be without this Jew-infested so-called nation.

n83nbu, God bless Bush for his support of Israel. --- we should give ten times the amount we do to Israel. And guess what -- God loves Israel and He HATES Israel's enemies and He will eventually destroy all of Israel's enemies. And guess what --- I am an average American gentile. And there are millions like me. We love Israel because we love Israel's God. You want a holy war --- one is coming --- Jesus is coming with his armies and will destroy all of Israel's enemies. You think there is blood in Gaza? In that day there will be blood ten feet deep from all the dead enemies of Israel.

Nothing like a little religion mixed with bloodlust to make my day go by. What again is the problem with islamic fundamentalism? Religion & bloodlust? Can't be the same can it? When Muslims do (or say) it it's bad, when Christians or Jews do (or say) it it's prophesy and all sorts of garbage.
You fundamentalists are all the same regardless fo the religion which you proclaim. And you are a great part of what's wrong with the world today.

This presentation is a job well done.
Given this history I wonder why no one in the US is talking about the Palestinian's right to defend themselves. The US foreign policy towards this conflict is completely hypocritical.

Bajan man, you can read about it in the Bible. "Revenge is Mine, Saith the Lord" Also Revelations 14:19,20 says: So the angel swung out his scythe on the earth and gathered the fruit of the earth's grapevine and threw it into the great winepress of God's wrath. Outside the city the wine press was trodden and blood flowed out of the wine press, so that for two hundred miles it came up to the horse's bridles."

Al-Nakba - What idiot would describe it as a dispute as to whether Jewish groups terrorize Arabs or anything else. Jews immigrants were less than 10% of the population and were given more than 30% of the land by the UN resolution. I believe the same idiot also describes a photo of civilians wearing civilian clothes lying on the floor as Egyptian troops. Unfair and biased - that's what you are Newsweek!
